Review
2010
Welcome
On behalf of the Patrons of the Wates Family Enterprise
Trust, I welcome you to this year’s edition of the Wates
Giving Review.
Following the successful launch of the Trust in 2008, our
second full year has been one of consolidation of earlier
achievements, as well as an increase in the range and scale
of the work of the Wates Giving programme. With so many
uncertainties in the charitable and community funding
landscape, picking the right causes has never been more
challenging; however, we have sought to place funding
where maximum impact can be delivered.
A key factor in this has been our engagement with the
people in the Wates Group businesses; their knowledge,
experience and commitment to their local communities
have initiated a range of imaginative major projects across
diverse social and economic fields. Wates Giving has also
supported Wates people who volunteer their time and
energy to local organisations with a number of Community
Project awards. Our sponsorship programme has grown
this year to help a number of highly talented individuals
from the Wates community that compete at the highest
levels in sports and the arts.
Our awards have a broad reach, supporting projects
throughout the UK. We believe that Wates Giving is a
genuine philanthropic response by business to the delivery
of the aims of Big Society, reflecting our Family ethos and
values. We are committed to building up the momentum
of our giving, and so have been pleased to raise the
level of our financial commitment to £1.4 million a year.
The Review also gives a taster of some of the work that
this will fund in 2011.
I would like to thank Andrew Wates for his excellent
leadership as Chairman of the Grants and Working
meetings, and also the Family Patrons for their continued
engagement and commitment to the work of the Trust.
My thanks are also due to Brian Wheelwright and the
Secretariat team, to Duncan Straughen of the Wates
Family Office and to Julia Tyson of Wates Group. And to the
many Wates people whose imagination and enthusiasm
has brought us so many exciting projects. I hope that you
enjoy reading about our year.
Employee Awards
Wates Giving backs the personal causes that
Wates people support with their own time and
resources. Our employee awards provide support
for fundraising through both Match Funding and
personal donations to charity through Give As
You Earn. We award grants to help community
groups where Wates people regularly volunteer
and provide sports sponsorships to employees,
or their direct family members, who compete at
a national level.
For the first time in 2010 we made awards
to set up two “Group-wide” employee
schemes. One was to help underpin the
Group’s successful employee volunteering
programme, “Lend a Hand”, by funding
access to a UK-wide volunteering opportunity
database. The second was a flagship award,
made in partnership with the Norman Wates
Memorial Fund, to launch a new scheme
called “Your Family Matters”. This pioneering
programme, delivered through Action for
Carers and the Princess Royal Trust for Carers,
offers a dedicated carer support helpline to
employees and pensioners.
04 Wates Giving Annual Review 2010
During the year our individual Employee
Awards really took off with Wates people
as we had increased applications for all our
schemes. In addition, we have been pleased
to support appeals where employees
across the Group have donated their own
money collectively for disaster relief funds.
The case studies over the next three pages
illustrate the range of projects we have
been proud to support.
Wates Community Day allows
employees to donate their time and
resources to make a difference to
local community projects of their
choice. In 2010 more than 1,500
people contributed over 12,600 hours
to 94 community projects across the
UK. Wates Giving further supported
each of the charity projects with a
donation of £250, amounting to a
total of over £23,500.
Community Grants
Wates Giving backs the causes that Wates people support with their own time and
resources. Community Grants support initiatives where Wates employees are personally
involved. They provide a boost to the resources of charities and community groups
where employees volunteer regularly to make a difference.
Sports Sponsorships
Sports sponsorships help support
Wates employees, or their immediate
family members, who compete in a
sport at a national level. They help
relieve the financial pressures of
competing by assisting with expenses
for coaching, equipment and travel
costs. Kyle Edmund, the recipient of
our first sports sponsorship in 2009,
has since been able to compete at
Junior Wimbledon. In 2010 Wates
Giving made five new awards aimed
at helping talented individuals reach
their full potential.
internationally and finished second in the England
Open Championships in 2010. Casey’s step-father,
Interiors. 2 Sam Norton represented England
in the 2010 European Under 17s Roller Hockey
Championships. His father, John, is a site manager for
Wates Construction. 3 Philip Roberts is a potential
Olympic wrestler, having competed for England at the
Commonwealth Games in 2010. His father, Stephen,
is a project estimator for Wates Retail.
Awards were also given to Nigel Reed, who competes
nationally at bowls and Zakar Hussain, ranked
England’s number one junior lightweight boxer.
personal charitable giving by Match
projects which will have a
positive impact in communities
for the long term.
Social Enterprise has again been one of our major
investment themes in 2010. We have aimed
to support the Group’s exemplary work in this
important area, both at a national and local level
to help the project gain traction. We have provided
grants for individual social enterprises such as
Clean Start (see contents page) and the Jericho
Foundation. We also funded the School of Social
Entrepreneurs to run a one-day workshop in 2011,
for the social enterprises currently engaged with
the Group to share experiences and best practice.
Commitment to this area remains a priority
theme in 2011.
CHANGING PATHS
Changing Paths works with offenders before they are released,
assisting them into employment in the construction sector. In its
first full year, Changing Paths has helped all of its 213 participants
achieve the construction industry’s CSCS card. Over 100 of these
have been provided with certified skills training and, as a result
of Wates Giving’s support, 53 ex-offenders are now in full-time
employment and three others have begun apprenticeships.
BIRMINGHAM VOLUNTEERS
A team of Wates employees has been active in helping SIFA Fireside (Supporting Independence
from Alcohol) and its work with the socially excluded, particularly in dealing with homelessness
and alcohol dependence. Wates people have personally supported its volunteer programme
and donated their time to renovate the facilities in its drop-in centre for vulnerable people.
These facilities are crucial to the training schemes which help service users gain independence
and find jobs. With as many as 90 users a day, SIFA Fireside found itself in need of extra
resources to deliver its volunteer programme. Wates Giving provided a boost by funding a
Wates Giving supported the start up of an innovative
Finance, run by the National Housing Federation,
provides affordable loans to reduce dependency
on doorstep lenders who often charge extortionate
interest rates. In its first two months it made over
1,600 loans and its impact has been widely felt,
especially in helping unemployed women and
one-parent families who are particularly at risk.
BUILDING FUTURES
Our continued support has been crucial to the sustained
success of Building Futures. The AQA accredited programme
targets long term unemployed adults facing barriers to
employment. The scheme now operates in major cities
across England, Scotland and Wales to help disadvantaged
adults into full time work. Building Futures harnesses Wates’
expertise in construction to give unemployed adults a
valuable insight into the industry alongside practical training
and soft skills. In 2010 over 350 delegates took part in
the programme, with 65% of these going on to full-time
employment or further learning as a result.
construction. Almost 80 young people have
benefited from training programmes like
Thought
leadership
The second part of a pioneering piece of research into
the prison estate commissioned by Wates Giving and
conducted by the Institute of Public Policy Research (ippr).
It considers community based alternatives for tackling the
root causes of crime. As part of our thought leadership, the
report helps inform policy makers on investing resources in
more effective ways of rehabilitating offenders.
