From our General Manager
Bill Beisel
As a PGA member, I have the opportunity to attend quarterly meetings to network
with my peers and to hear panels of experts opine about the „State of the Industry‟. Time
and time again, I am reminded of how fortunate we are here at Blue Bell Country Club.
At a roundtable discussion I listened to golf pro‟s talk about the economic conditions and how
they are affecting not only their memberships, but trickling down even further into their clubs.
There was talk of poor course conditions, maintenance issues in the clubhouse, capital
assessments (or no capital improvements) and much more; often doom and gloom.
It makes me proud to be a part of this club. Proud to communicate with you through this
newsletter by telling you, and ultimately showing you, how we are different. Our value here at Blue Bell Country Club
is like no other. Besides our excellent course conditions and our beautiful clubhouse, we also have unprecedented
amenities when combined with our sister property across the street at Normandy Farm Hotel and Conference Center.
I urge you, please, take advantage of these amenities, AND…tell your friends.
In addition to these value added features there are many significant cost control systems that are also realized from
this combination. We will continue to work hard to assure these advantages are passed onto you and welcome any
suggestions you may have to further enhance the Blue Bell/Normandy experience.
Our primary goal for the near future is to continue to emphasize the importance of using the Blue Bell Country Club
website for your complete source of membership information. If you log in to the member only section (using your first
and last name with no spaces as your username and your member number as your password) we are very confident
you will enjoy the experience. Members can review all current information regarding tournament results, upcoming
events (golf and social), hours of operation, current menus, contact information and more…easy to access and fun
to read.
Please join me in congratulating Meghan Spero and Hilary Omohundro for developing our new website and
enhancing all forms of club communication. You can call either one of these ladies with any questions regarding the
website. Please remember to take full advantage of the many benefits described above and most importantly,
GOLF
From our Head Golf Professional
Steve Wahal, PGA
Pace of play at BBCC remains our top priority for our golfing members. We have added more rangers during
peak periods of play and have also adopted the Golf Association of Philadelphia‟s pace of play policy
for the Blue Bell Men‟s Golf Association events. To date, pace of play is much faster than in the past. We have
sent out only about half as many pace of play violation emails to members then in prior years. Members should
be commended for their efforts in keeping up with our pace of play guidelines. Of course, members should be
reminded to heed the rangers instructions when asked to regain their position on the course. It doesn‟t take much
to close a ten minute gap or an open hole if ALL players in the group work together to play more quickly. Once
your group gets back in position, a more conventional approach to pace of play can resume.
PLEASE NOTE: If ForeTees is not showing any available tee times during a certain period of the day due to an
event (9 & Dines, etc…), it is always a good idea to call the golf shop. It is likely we will have the ability to get you
on the course to enjoy a round of golf at Blue Bell.
REMINDER: When we are utilizing double-tees on the weekends, we have a window from approximately 11:40 AM
to 1:00 PM off the back nine for members who would like to play 9-holes.
As always feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance.
From our Director of Instruction
Mike Dynda, PGA
While practicing, most golfers will rapid fire one ball after another. One shot goes to the right, one to the left and
the third right down the middle. At this point the player perceives they‟re hitting it good and improving. Not true.
What happens when the player is faced with a shot that requires a high or low trajectory or a draw or fade? Of
course it is necessary to dedicate a percentage of your practice time (I recommend 50%) working on repetition
and swing improvement. For this, it‟s best to use the same club to groove the feelings, thoughts and swing cues
necessary to trust the new movements. The remaining practice time should be spent transferring this new skill set
to the real world.
Below are two practice approaches to help you bring the course to the range. 1) Imagine various shot types
that you are faced with on particular holes such as a front pin on # 14 from 100 yards away or a back left pin
position on #13 that requires a draw spin, etc. This is an excellent way to slow down the practice session and put
you in a position to develop a pre shot routine and further your ability to visualize shots that will lower your score
and not simply improve your ball striking abilities. 2) Play an imaginary hole. Start with hitting a drive, then set up
to a different target hitting a fairway wood, and finish with an approach shot using a short iron. It isn‟t very often
that you use the same club twice on a hole so treat your practice just like that; never hit the same club twice.
By hitting a variety of clubs to the several target poles on the driving range, you will be able to simulate many
different on course shots, building confidence and consistency in your game. Work hard, stay focused, but most
importantly, have fun!
On a side note, if you haven‟t signed up for Junior Golf Camp, don‟t forget to do so. It runs from August
14th-17th for ages 6-16. For more information or to sign up email md42@pga.com or call 610-724-GOLF.

GOLF ASSOCIATIONS
Golf Association of Philadelphia
Tony Regina - GAP Assistant Director of Communications
Talk about variety. The Golf Association of Philadelphia offers a diverse tournament collection this month. It starts
with the Deeg Sezna Four-Ball, which will take place Aug. 7 at Applecross Country Club. Junior players pair up with a
mentor to play golf in honor of the tournament‟s namesake, who was killed in 9/11. The Martson Cup, at White
Manor Country Club, is set for Aug. 15 and limited to players 40 to 54 years of age. Finally, August brings the Senior
27-Hole Challenge, set for Aug. 22 at Spring Mill Country Club.
Can you believe July is over? We are more then half way through golf season! I hope everyone has found some
time to enjoy our beautiful course. This past month we played our women‟s club championship. Thanks to
everyone who participated in such extreme heat! Day one was played on one of the hottest days of the year! I was
fortunate to be one of the winners along with Marie Winner and Theresa Held. Congratulations to all!
For more information on the Women‟s Golf Association, contact Steve Wahal at 215-616-8107.
BBCC Men’s Golf Association
Joe Sosnowski - BBCC MGA Handicap Chairman
A reminder that you are responsible for posting your scores and posting them correctly into the GHIN system. The
preferred method is to post at the club using the pro shop computer immediately after the round. If the pro shop is
closed the score card can be dropped in the box outside of the pro shop. All cards in the drop box must be legible
with all names clearly written, they must also have the correct date entered and be properly signed.
If you have set a tee time on ForeTees for 18 holes and only play 9 holes, you must have the ForeTees entry
corrected to indicate such. Failure to do so will result in a “Missed Posting”. Likewise, if your score is entered with the
incorrect date, ForeTees will again flag a “Missed Posting”. It is most important to legibly and accurately fill out all
score cards. The same is true for scores being posted online. Thanks for your cooperation.
For more information on the Men‟s Golf Association, contact Steve Wahal at 215-616-8107.

DINING & SOCIAL
From our Assistant General Manager
Jason Causey
Craft Beers….What‟s this all about? IPA, Imperial IPA, Chocolate Stout, Barrel Aged Stout,
Belgian Strong Ale and Barleywine…what happened to just plain “Beer”? Remember your first
sip? Probably not one of your fondest memories. Thankfully, we have come a long way since
PBR and Miller Highlife. The Craft Beer market has literally exploded over the past few years,
but surprisingly it still only has less than 10% of the market share. I guess it is hard to compete
with the likes of Miller, Coors & Budweiser, the Corporate Megalodons of the brewing industry.
These guys have eaten up and spat out more craft and micro breweries than you can shake a
stick at, yet the little guys keep hanging around and they are coming out of the
woodwork....with intent. Survival of the fittest? Perhaps, but thinning the herd has had dramatic
results as far as what is now available in the market. When was the last time you were at Whole Foods? What
about Wegmans? Yep, they sell beer and not just any beer, but really good beer. I have even
stumbled across beers that you only read about in magazines some of which are so highly allocated that only the
top 5% of beer bars and restaurants have even been given the privilege of selling.
What does this all mean? It means that the consumer is getting smarter and more savvy about their choice of
suds. Why settle for cheap beer with little or no taste? It is now all about the experience, the complexity of the
flavors and even pairing it with your favorite dish. There is so much good beer and so many beer styles out there
that it can be overwhelming. Did you know that this year the Great American Beer Festival will be judging 84
different beer categories, with another 80 subcategories? That‟s a lot of beer. So, where do you even begin to
start?
Beer consists of only four ingredients, water, malt, hops and yeast. The styles vary from bright crisp pilsners to
velvety, thick stouts. The beauty of this is that you can always find something that suits your palate, whether it is the
fruity tartness of a Raspberry Lambic or the peppery nuances of a dry Farmhouse Saison. With beer there is truly
something for everyone, if you are willing to give it a try.
Lucky for you – as a Blue Bell member you don‟t have to look far. We have a beer list that consists of over 80
bottles & cans and a rotating draft beer selection that would rival the best beer bars in Philadelphia. Since the
addition of our new beer tower in January 2011, which brought us from two beers to four beers, we have served
over 75 different craft beers on tap. Name another country club in Pennsylvania or the United States that can say
that? Give up? That‟s right….NONE. I am proud of our beer list here at Blue Bell and it is my passion and my
pleasure to be your guide on this adventure called Craft Beer.
Please join us this month for our monthly Lobby Tasting on Friday, August 17th from 6-8PM. Lobby Tastings are
complimentary to members and members‟ guests, so come out and try some of these specialty beers!
STRUSE NEWS
From our Course Superintendent
Todd Struse, GCSAA
The dreaded triple bogey from a greenside bunker; we have all done it a time or two. Not
even Tiger is immune from such a mistake. While I am sure he is still shaking his head at the triple
bogey on hole six that possibly cost him the 2012 British Open, bunkers, otherwise known as sand
traps, are exactly that…a trap. Royal Lytham certainly had its fair share, 206 to be exact and
incredibly deep. While our bunkers here in the U.S. aren‟t quite as extreme, they are
considered a hazard and should be difficult to play from.
Bunkers are sometimes the subject of criticism. From the golfer's perspective, they are either
too hard, too soft or too wet. They can be an architect's dream and a superintendent's worst
nightmare. From the golfer‟s point of view, their design and location can affect the strategy, aesthetic appeal and
playability of a hole. Take for example the redesign of the greenside bunkers on hole number 13. While still a
difficult hole, by removing the front bunkers players may now run the ball onto the elevated green instead of flying
it to the pin with a long iron.
But for superintendents, bunker maintenance requires consistent work. We must maintain the best possible playing
surface without sacrificing the bunker‟s role as a hazard. Accomplishing those objectives makes bunker
maintenance one of the most significant items on our schedule. Here at BBCC we do daily bunker maintenance.
We are constantly grooming and raking the bunkers to ensure proper sand depth and smoothness and we also
make sure the bunker edge is well defined preventing any grass from bleeding into the sand. Throughout the
season we determine if any bunkers require additional sand in order to prevent any significant drainage problems.
So what can our golfers do on his/her own to help maintain a bunker and manicure the course? One can begin
with the proper method of raking a bunker after entering. Greenside bunkers are usually raked in the direction of
play or toward the center of the green. Fairway bunkers are raked parallel to play from tee to green. When you are
finished, the sand's surface should be even, with no signs of divots or footprints. The important thing is that the sand
be in as good or better condition than that which you found it in. Make sure golfers following behind you have a
good quality bunker from which to play any necessary sand shots. And if you are like me and you consider
bunkers to be more of a sand TRAP, reach out to any of the golf professional staff on a few tips on how to
successfully navigate your way out of a bunker. And hey, if you can make a double bogey or less from a bunker, at
least you can say you were better than Tiger Woods!
