The Mount Victoria Tunnel is
getting an upgrade. That means the
NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) will
be closing the tunnel five nights a
week, Sunday to Thursday, from
8.00pm until 6.00am. The closures
begin on 9 May 2011 with work
expected to end in early 2012.
We appreciate that many pedestrians and cyclists use the
Mt Victoria Tunnel to get in or out of town each day, so
we’ve identified some options to ensure people can still
travel between Wellington and Hataitai when we are
working in the tunnel. Access is unaffected at other times.
Travel options
There are two main diversion routes for cyclists to use
when the tunnel is closed. These follow the general vehicle
diversion routes – either via Newtown or around the Bays.
For pedestrians, the Wellington Tunnels Alliance (WTA)
will provide free public bus travel and a shuttle service
between 8pm and 6am, Sunday to Thursday, when the
tunnel is closed for upgrade work
Free bus card
A free bus card is available for free public bus travel on the
No 2 Miramar bus between Pirie Street and Hataitai Village
after 8pm on the nights the tunnel is closed. Bus timetables
are shown on the map overleaf.
The free bus card can only be used from specified bus
stops. Going to Hataitai, you can use it from the Pirie Street
stop at the intersection of Porritt Avenue only. For those
travelling from Hataitai, you can only use the WTA card
from the Hataitai Village bus stop. Passengers using the
card must also get off at these stops after travelling through
the bus tunnel. The card cannot be used on any other bus
service in Wellington.
If you would like a free bus card, please contact the
WTA on 0508 WTA 444 (0508 982 444) or email
wellingtontunnelsalliance@nzta.govt.nz. We will arrange
for a card to be sent to you or you can collect it from the
WTA offices on Willis Street.
Free shuttle
Between 8pm and 6am on the nights the tunnel is
closed, a free on-call shuttle service will be provided
between the corner of Dufferin Street and Ellice
Street (Basin Reserve) and Taurima Street (Hataitai).
Information will be provided at these locations to
arrange a shuttle on request.
More information
We understand that the work we are doing in the
Mt Victoria Tunnel will be inconvenient for some,
but we ask for your patience while this essential
maintenance upgrade is carried out. Work begins
on Monday 9 May 2011 and is expected to be
completed in early 2012. Closure times are subject
to change to cater for important events. Check the
website or our weekly advertisement in Monday’s
DominionPost for planned closure times.
