BCWI BOARD, COMMITTEES AND STAFF 20
BCWI MEMBER WINERIES 22
BC VQA = 100% BC:
Over the past year, we have seen the true strength of the Wines of BC. In a year when many
industries struggled, BC VQA wines held their own. Like our wines, our brand is fresh, bright and
lively and attracting new consumers from BC and beyond. We are unique, we are a reflection of
our land, we are the Wines of BC.
The true strength of a brand is measured by the ability to maintain momentum during
periods of economic uncertainty. As we look back over this last year of challenging market
conditions we can state that the ongoing vision of the BC Wine Institute membership has
established strong brand loyalty to Wines of BC (BC VQA).
Over the last year we have seen market sales growth of 6.5% and our market share has grown
by 1% to 19.8% of the BC market. BC VQA store sales were up 14% in the 19 active stores over
the previous year.
This year has seen positive trends in continuing collaborative efforts toward industry growth
and development. Our membership has grown to 109 members representing 95% of wine
production in the province and we continue to work with all industry associations and
government to ensure a solid base and a shared vision for the BC wine industry’s future.
We have seen an increase in the number of wineries and the overall supply within our
industry. Our increased supply has allowed us to continue to drive Wines of BC (BC VQA)
awareness across all channels and into Alberta last year. As our industry winery numbers and
supply continue to grow, we continue to look for premium wine channels, to grow tourism
numbers and continue to increase the recognition of our quality brand.
Message from the Chairman
BCWI staff work hand-in-hand with winery member committees who provide input and
guidance in the areas of focus – Marketing, BC VQA Wine Stores, Government Relations, and
Finance. We appreciate all the hard work and expertise of the committee members and the
tireless efforts of the staff.
Thank you to everyone who makes our industry’s success a reality.
Josie Tyabji, Chairman
BRITISH COLUMBIA WINE INSTITUTE • 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT 1
2Message from the Executive Director
If I were to name a single theme to encapsulate the past year, it would have to be momentum.
With the steady increase in member wineries and the sustained growth of consumer demand (see
page 18) for BC VQA products, it does not take much imagination to see how this classic physics
term easily applies to the Wines of British Columbia.
It takes focused, sustained effort to take full advantage of the benefits of momentum. Our
momentum began with a refresh of the strategic marketing, communications and advocacy plans
and development of various new programs, all with the input of our board, committees and
individual members. Our momentum flows through numerous programs, including in particular,
the collaborative promotion of BC VQA through work with our key retail distribution partners, the
BCLDB and BC VQA wine stores. These are programs that work to educate the consumer, whether
through in-store BC VQA ‘thematics’ for display in the 200+ provincial government liquor stores;
coordinating the annual spring tour of BC VQA product advocates to BC wine country; or working
hand-in-hand with our BC VQA wine stores on common exterior signage that allows consumers to
readily identify each store as BC VQA.
Building on the success of our traditional spring Bloom and fall Colour trade events in Vancouver
and Victoria that last year celebrated 20 years of BC VQA with a Founders’ Library Tasting, this past
spring we included Calgary and Edmonton trade events in support of these key ‘export’ markets.
We also participated in the Vancouver Playhouse Festival and expanded the successful Dine
Around & Stay in Town Victoria and Dine Out Vancouver programs. In addition, we expanded our
fall ChefmeetsGrape consumer event to the Calgary market, resulting in the Wines of BC being
named the official wines of the 10-day Big Taste Calgary consumer-restaurant event, giving the
wine buying public direct exposure to BC VQA wines.
Not all of last year’s success is as readily observable or quantifiable. We continued working with
our national peers and colleagues at the Canadian Vintners Association and the Wine Council of
Ontario to coordinate the federal AgriMarketing Program in support of the BCWI international
wine competition consolidation program, resulting in over 1,000 medals awarded to participating
member wineries this year.
Our advocacy efforts also continue to move forward, particularly with regard to direct to
consumer delivery with the re-introduction of Lake Country MP Ron Cannan’s private member’s
bill calling for a personal exemption to the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act (1928) to allow
individuals to transport Canadian wines across provincial borders. And on the provincial level, we
continue to enjoy the support of key provincial Ministries critical to the continued success of our
industry.
Finally, on a personal note, I would like to thank the BCWI members and especially staff for
welcoming me to the association. I remain in awe of the professionalism, integrity and hard work
exhibited every day and am inspired to help continue the momentum.
Miles Prodan, Executive Director
BRITISH COLUMBIA WINE INSTITUTE • 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT
OUR VISION is straightforward and clear. Continued support and growth of the Wines of
British Columbia (BC VQA) as the preferred premium wine brand; develop and execute strategies
to create a business climate that encourages investment in the quality of BC VQA wines; assist
members in realizing their full potential; and provide leadership on key industry issues.
OUR CORE VALUES are reflected in all the work we do: quality, leadership, dedication,
and passion.
OUR CORE PURPOSE is to represent the interests of British Columbia wineries dedicated
to producing BC VQA wines through marketing, communications and advocacy of their
products to all stakeholders.
OUR VISIONARY GOALS are a broader expression of how we will achieve our vision.
WE SUPPORT and grow the Wines of British Columbia (BC VQA) and Wine Regions
of British Columbia brands as the preferred quality choice of consumers. We do this by
educating our consumers to understand that we produce only 100 per cent BC wine (BC
VQA). We will create a market share that absorbs our grape production. Our market share
in dollars will be greater than any other category in BC (excluding Canadian non-VQA). We
will be known for quality wine and memorable wine tourism experiences.
WE IMPROVE the profitability of and business climate for our members. We will work
to provide margin enhancement through retail sales (BCLDB, BC VQA wine stores, etc.),
trade channels, relief from excessive taxation (for example, the federal excise tax), and
develop a tourism strategy to increase on-site sales and to increase the flow of tourism
dollars to the Wine Regions of BC.
WE PROVIDE a leadership role within the British Columbia wine industry. We will
create opportunities for networking, collaboration, partnership and education in the
industry. We will provide leadership as the voice for industry to government, trade,
media, consumers and other stakeholders. We will find common ground amongst
industry stakeholders.
2011 BCWI Vision, Goals and Business Objectives
6Marketing Objectives and Highlights
MARKETING OBJECTIVES
Develop an annual marketing plan to reinforce and measurably increase awareness of the
Wines of British Columbia (BC VQA) and Wines Regions of British Columbia brands and help
to lever partners and other stakeholders with their individual brand promotion and marketing
objectives through the collaborative promotion of the BCWI brands.
Increase BC VQA market share by one per cent per year (in dollar sales) in BC annually, until
2013 (attaining a 23.5 per cent market share by 2013). Annually, our market share in dollars will
be greater than any other category in BC (other than Canadian non-VQA wine).
Continue to dominate the wine calendar in western Canada with events and programs that
create measureable sales, awareness and loyalty with our target markets including trade,
media and consumers.
Conduct quantitative and qualitative research to measure and improve our marketing
programs’ effectiveness and to better understand our target consumers (such as
benchmarking how consumers make buying decisions, what influences their purchasing
decision, understanding awareness levels of BC VQA, and determining what consumers think
about our products).
MARKETING HIGHLIGHTS
EVENTS
The BCWI’s annual trade and media tasting events continue to grow. The Bloom BC VQA
Spring Release Tastings attracted over 450 attendees (combined) in Vancouver & Victoria
while the Colour BC VQA Fall Release Tasting was the largest single BCWI event to date with
over 65 wineries showcasing their wines to a crowd of over 400
7th Annual ChefmeetsGrape event featured 65 wineries and 9 restaurants and attracted over
350 attendees at the Vancouver Convention Centre
Hosted a Wines of British Columbia booth and the BC Food & Wine: Our Land, Revealed
lunch at O’Doul’s at two Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festivals this fiscal, April 19-
25, 2010 and March 28-April 3, 2011. The interactive wine and food pairings at the Wines of BC
booth allowed us to get our message out to both key trade and media as well as consumers
during all of the festival tastings while the BC Food & Wine lunch at O’Doul’s gave consumers
and key media the opportunity to sample a new selection of BC VQA wines (wines not
available in the general VPIWF tasting room) and interact with winery principals in a more
intimate setting
The BCWI continued sponsorship of key on-premise programs, Dine Out Vancouver
(220 participating restaurants) and Dine Around & Stay in Town Victoria (65 participating
restaurants). These programs help increase the presence and sales of BC VQA wines and
encourage consumers to eat and drink local
Increased our presence in the Alberta market by hosting Discover BC VQA Wines trade &
media tastings in Edmonton and Calgary as well as a ChefmeetsGrape consumer event to kick off
The Big Taste Calgary. The Wines of BC also became the Official Wine Sponsor of The Big Taste
Calgary to increase the presence of BC VQA wines in Calgary restaurants and augment sales
BRITISH COLUMBIA WINE INSTITUTE • 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT
RETAIL
Maintained our strong partnership with the BC Liquor Stores with a year-round thematic program,
including four thematics (May, September, December and March) and one super-thematic (August)
in their 200+ stores augmented with a reprint of the Explore BC map for all stores. Again we
coordinated and helped host the annual BC VQA Advocate Tour in the Okanagan. Each year, a
new group of Advocates have the amazing opportunity to tour many of their listed wineries in
person and, as a result, they become true ambassadors of BC VQA and have contributed to an
increase in sales
Completed the BC VQA Wine Store signage program. Each store now has at least one BC VQA
branded element (outdoor/indoor signage) to help create more cohesive brand awareness
Continued to provide over-runs of the BCLDB thematic for all BC VQA wine stores
As part of a partnership developed with Savour Magazine, we contributed to BC VQA stories
2010 Vintage Report
WHITE WINE QUALITY
Very good to excellent. Wines show fresh flavours and vibrant acidity.
RED WINE QUALITY
Good to excellent. Varying quality due to trying growing season. Experience and forethought
generally produced very good wines throughout the province with rich colour and
concentrated flavours.
ICEWINE QUALITY
Excellent.
A mild, non-eventful winter provided a nice break in the action for the BC wine industry, but
ultimately, it proved to be the calm before the storm. Following two trying vintages, in 2010
grapegrowers and winemakers once again pulled together and found a winning combination
to create exceptional wines from a less than exceptional season.
COLD / WET SPRING PRIMES FOR A CHALLENGING SEASON
At the 2010 Winemakers & Viticulturalists’ Forum when describing spring conditions, the
overwhelming use of such “technical” terms as “wet,” “nasty” and “cold” did not go unnoticed.
“Looking at the notes from the end of May, (I) couldn’t have written a worse start,” remarked
Graham O’Rourke from Mission Hill Family Estate Winery.
With most vineyards across the province seeing bud break occurring 2 to 3 weeks late,
viticulturalists were forced to make early adjustments ranging from extra spraying to creative
pruning and canopy management.
COOLER-THAN-AVERAGE SUMMER
Spring continued into a cooler-than-usual summer in the Okanagan with very few of their 40°C
(104°F) days. Similar to the summer of 2008, the cooler but consistent temperatures allowed for
the vines to play catch up.
Manfred Freese of Sun Ridge Vineyards on the east bench in Osoyoos noted degree days much
like 2008 but with more rain. The presence of more water throughout the summer produced
increased botrytis levels, which was a concern in many areas and was even noted on vines such
as Syrah. Wetter summers tend to also increase cell division, leading to larger, less concentrated
grapes. Not so this season says Rod King of King Family Farms “not as much cell division because of
cool, damp spring.”
10
BRITISH COLUMBIA WINE INSTITUTE • 2010-2011 ANNUAL REPORT
HARVEST: LATE START, LATER FINISH
Despite a wetter-than-normal summer and more rain in September, Joe Slykerman from
Rollingdale noted berry size remained small contributing to concentrated flavour in the juice
with a high skin to pulp ratio. Even with the challenges of the year, Glenn Fawcett of Black Hills
Winery noted that the grapes had the “best phenolic ripeness I’ve ever seen.”
Thinning of the canopy and bunches took place in most vineyards to ensure higher quality in the
remaining crop but we did see the overall crops down 11% across the province. It was a stressful
time for many vineyard managers and winemakers as hard decisions had to be made about
cropping levels in order to achieve optimal ripeness and because of the abundance of botrytis.
A late start to the harvest had the first grapes being picked the week of September 15, two
weeks behind harvest last year. The rest of BC wineries started picking around September 24,
with Vista D’oro Winery in Langley having their last bins of Syrah come in on November 5th
making 2010 one of the latest harvests on record.
2010 Vintage Report
ICEWINE: BRIGHT HARVEST IN THE LIGHT OF DAY
The first grapes for the 2010 Icewine were brought in early on November 22 at a chilly -11°C
(12°F) by Tinhorn Creek Vineyards in Oliver who harvested 1 acre of Kerner just a few weeks
after some wineries completed the regular season harvest. As the second earliest Icewine
harvest on record (the current record being November 5, 2003), it was a very relaxed, stressfree
Christmas holiday for the Icewine community. With typical concerns of temperatures
rising too high, during this cold harvest, Sandra Oldfield, winemaker for Tinhorn Creek,
remembers “it hadn’t warmed up enough in the winery to dump the press. Early is good.”
The temperatures dropped overnight on November 23 to an icy -16°C (3.2°F) when Summerhill
Pyramid Organic Winery was picking. Later that morning, harvest was completed at Tantalus
Vineyards, Mission Hill Family Estate Winery, Quails’ Gate Estate Winery, Van Westen Vineyards
and Nk’Mip Cellars to name a few. The 2010 Icewine harvest was completed by November
25th, bringing in approximately 520 tons.
OVERALL
Despite the erratic season, the 2010 vintage looks to be one of great quality, especially for the
whites! Although quantities might be slightly down for some table wines, keep an eye out for
some outstanding sparkling wines. Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and a myriad of Rosé
wines are showing very well, and look forward to bright, lighter styles of Pinot Noir.
Vintners across the province showed their skill, poise and ability this season. Thanks to a late,
dry, warm spell in October, we were able to achieve good to excellent fruit quality across the
board. Challenging times matched with perseverance and passion has once again produced
tremendous results and continues to push BC wines to the forefront of the industry both
nationally and abroad. Rod King, of King Family Farms, noted that the challenging weather of
2010 should teach something to all grapegrowers, “the lesson is to have faith, the vines will
pull through.”
