NEW TOYS Cerwin-Vega P-Series Professional PA Systems Cerwin-Vega’s new P-Series family of powered loudspeakers starts with the bi-amped, full range P1500X (1,500-watts total) and the 2,000-watt P1800SX subwoofer. The P1500X is a two-way, full-range speaker that pairs a 15-inch woofer with a high frequency compression driver and hemi-conical horn in a bass-reflex speaker cabinet. The cabinet is made from a tough, polymer material that has a flush-mounted rear-panel three-channel mixer and Neutrik Combo connectors. This is ideal for fast, simple and universal setups anywhere in the world. I like the onboard EQ, VEGA BASS boost and high-pass filters for on-site tuning as required. The P1500X is useful as a single, standalone speaker for smaller venues (office A/V meetings etc.) or in pairs for larger spaces needing more coverage, volume level and projection To project over and above the crowd, the P1500Xs have a two-position pole cup with an adjustable mounting point for upright pole mounting. The comfortable handles, built-in rigging points and remote volume port make the P1500X great for suspended installations or at stage front as wedge monitors. The P1800SX subwoofer uses an 18-inch woofer powered by a custom 2,000-watt Class-D amp. Both the woofer and amplifier are enclosed in the same hardwood cabinet and this system also includes VEGA BASS boost, and a high-pass filter switch. I saw and heard a pair of P1500X and P1800SX systems in action at a recent press event and they provided more than enough big sound and projection for a four-piece Rock band with vocals. Each of the P1500s was pole-mounted on top of a single P1800SX and the two sets of speakers were easily daisy-chained together using rear-panel I/O connections. Its look and everything about it is newly redesigned with 20 new distortion algorithms, new filter modules, 50 new impulse response, multiband wave shaping, 64-bit and AAX support, and better sound quality. Better sound quality? Audio distortion has become a kind of personal statement—but with T2 I’ve found so many new ways to shape sound beyond just distorting an amplifier signal chain. I’m impressed. Launching Trash 2 to develop whole galaxies of very distinctive sound treatments that nobody has ever heard before is possible with a long list of signal processing modules and over 20 different filters with envelope modulation. Now with over 60 distortion shapes, I found T2 to be more adjustable anywhere from subtle coloration to “over-the-top” and hairy sounds ready for a “restraining order.” But “cage” them in unique spaces courtesy of the new Convolve module with its 100+ different impulse responses. I like the two redesigned filters for developing alternate tonalities: innocent, dulcet tones all the way to malevolent sonic personalities. All at once, prettysounding audio that speaks with vowel-like sweetness is transformed instantly to hateful, sonic scourges. Trash 2 is available for $249 MSRP, €195 EUR and the Trash 2 Edge Expansion Pack is well worth $29 for getting gnarly presets for guitars, synth basses, synth pads and drum sound twists. Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Version 2 Sonnox Fraunhofer Pro-Codec Version 2 is an updated version of their real-time mp3/AAC encoder/decoder for mix and mastering engineers to audition and compare the differences in the sound of their music mixes when played through any choice of up to five different, simultaneously running perceptual audio codecs. Version 2 adds Apple’s iTunes Plus codec to the list of codecs for the “Mastered for iTunes” program. Available only in the Mac version, Apple’s iTunes Plus codec, for the best possible sound quality as all perceptual audio codecs, requires that its exact clipping behavior must be monitored and levels corrected if necessary. This saves time and ensures high quality output during the mixing/mastering process. Other additions to Version 2 are: the latest MPEG Surround codec along with Advanced Audio Coding Low Complexity (AAC-LC) multichannel and High Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE-AAC) multichannel support. This opens up Pro-Codec Ver 2 for multi-channel use by mixers/producers of surround music used for surround broadcasting and streaming. It contains a reimagined palette of analog modeled sounds plus a collection of new, dedicated PCM sounds for Korg’s SGProX piano. You also get Korg’s M1 and VOX organ sounds and rendered versions of the venerable Mellotron and Chamberlin tape instruments. I like the early ‘70s vintage look of the XL+ with its black panel and old-school knobs too. On top of the 128 onboard sounds, the MicroKorg XL+ has another 640 free sounds that can be loaded into it using the editor/librarian software that runs on Macs and PCs. Like all the Micro series, the MicroKorg XL+ needs no computer attached to play in the studio or at home. You can run it on an optional battery pack and also use it as a portable USB MIDI controller—the perfect keyboard for laptop/mobile music creation.
