While February for most of the country means
flowers, candy and awkward first dates, for
us musicians, producers, engineers and
songwriters it means heavy preparation,
elaborate performances and hopefully recognition
for last year’s release(s). That’s right, it’s Grammy
season!
Each year nominees and presenters have the opportunity
to network backstage with various lifestyle-product companies
in the “Grammy Gift Lounge”—a green room showcasing select
cutting-edge products. Music Connection has featured several
of these products over the years, including beauty products by
Lacie and the British apparel company Bench Clothing. One of
this year’s Lounge exhibitors is MTG Co., Ltd., maker of the sleek
ReFa CARAT (pictured). The CARAT is a platinum coated “beauty
roller” that generates micro-currents to help tighten/smooth
out skin with solar power. ReFa CARAT—and its older brother
product the ReFa PRO—generates a micro-current (a very low
and safe amount of electrical current) to replicate a small electrical
power produced by your own body. As your body’s natural current
decreases with age, the micro-currents generated by ReFa can
fill the void, and continue stimulating your skin cells to keep it smooth.
However, according to MTG spokesperson Rie Nozawa, the ReFa
can also be used as a health/wellness tool. “Even though people think
the ReFa [beauty rollers are] only for facial treatment for rejuvenation,
it [can also be used] to help release tension on your back, shoulder,
neck, etc.”
Since the company’s inception in Japan in 2009, ReFa products
have been offered to professional athletes to use during their cool-down
workout. Explains Nozawa, “We actually recommend [the ReFa] for
Olympic Athletes and pro football players so they can use it right after a
game.” Used to help muscular pain, improve blood circulation and release
tension, the same technology could surely be used by musicians. (After
that 25-minute drum solo perhaps?) And it’s waterproof… meaning sweaty
stage proof.
With the ReFa PRO included in last year’s “Grammy Gift Bag,” this year
the company is giving away its newest beauty mist product GLALENT,
which has yet to hit the US market. “The opportunity to be in the Grammy
Gift Lounge [has played an integral role in the products’ US success],”
concludes Nozawa. Since 2009, the ReFa PRO has sold over 1.4 million
units in Japan, and MTG attests much of that success to Grammy promotions.
The ReFa CARAT debuted in Japan in February 2012 (selling around
45,000 units a month) and will become available in the US on Feb. 1, 2013.
