The impetus for this
project was to refresh a kitchen
for empty-nesters to enjoy in the next
phase of their lives. The revised layout, in
conjunction with modern conveniences and
ergonomic storage, allows the kitchen to grow with the
clients, without having to forsake elegance and sophistication.
Happy New Year!
I hope your holidays were filled with family, friends and the warmth and
uplifting spirit of the season!
We had a successful Holiday Party on December 3rd thanks to Nora
Schneider and Ann Marie Del Monico that lead the planning team for one of
the many events we all look forward to each year. The party was well
attended by members as well as guests. As part of our strategic plan, a
variety of media guests were invited. Media exposure not only puts a face to
“Who is ASID Illinois?” but also communicates the value of our talented
members and the strength of our organization within the Illinois Design Community.
The ASID Illinois board continues to move forward into 2013 implementing the Strategic Work Plan tactics
creating more value for your membership!
• Value in communication and the importance of getting the word out about, Who is ASID Illinois? Your
Communications Director, Carol Stolt is working hand-in- hand with JoChicago, our PR firm, to place
timely information out on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest. The Social Media Task Force will be
working to document each event in a variety of ways to show our presence to the Illinois design community
and even to potential clients.
• Value in partnership within the Illinois interior design community. Our Outreach Partners under the
phenomenal guidance of Mario Gruetin is planning events with the five partners from last year. We are
also in the process of targeting other organizations that are interested in joining the Outreach Partners in
2013 for further networking.
• Value in community service and the importance of each of us reaching out and extending a helping hand
to those in need. Each of the board members have chosen a charity in which you are all invited to invest
your time and your talents; AIA NEI – Rebuild Aurora, Designs for Dignity, DIFFA, Designing for
Veterans, Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, Morning Star Mission, Northern Illinois Food Bank, Paws of Chicago &
Turning Point. We will keep you updated on opportunities to volunteer.
• Value in CEU opportunities at each event and targeting business development and business technology
tools at the January, February & March events. The Design Summit is scheduled for February 28, 2013.
Join us to look at the future of the design industry, earn business development CEU’s, gain product knowledge
and participate in networking opportunities. Our Chair, Roxanne Essex, is working with a team of
Professional, Allied and IP members to plan an event you must attend!
• Value in opportunities to participate and volunteer in all aspects of our chapter. With 1100 members, the
board and committee chairs need you to first, plan to attend events and second, volunteer on any
committee or task force that is the best use of your time and talents. We have started a Placement
Committee which you will be hearing from over the next couple of months to help engage you in volunteer
activities that will benefit you, ASID Illinois and the interior design industry in Illinois.
I am looking forward to working with each of you in some capacity to further our chapter!
The very best to each of you!
Board and Committee Reports
President-Elect, Janet Davidsen
Presently, I am working on Sponsorship from our Industry Partners to
provide exciting programs and events for the upcoming 2013 year. Appropriate
placement of our Members on committees is also top priority so they
benefit from the experience of participation. Last, I’m working on the
BIGGEST networking opportunity for our members. It’s in the works…
save the date: April 19, 2013!
Communications, Carol Stolt
In our strategic effort to establish a strong social media presence for the
ASID Illinois Chapter, the communications committee is planning a Social
Media CEU on Tuesday January 29th at Chicago Design Team, Arlington
Design Center in Arlington Heights. Whether you are an active participant
in the various platforms of social media or if you are curious and just
don’t know where to start, there will be something for everyone to learn
at this event. In addition, an iPad CEU will be presented in February.
Learn how this valuable tool can help you in your business from client
presentations to managing schedules and documents. Check the ASID
calendar at www.asidillinois.com and the bi-monthly ASID Newsbriefs
for dates, times and locations.
Although it feels that we only just presented the awards to our talented
Design Excellence Competition winners, the communications committee
is already planning for next year’s competition and gala awards event. We
are in the process of implementing a new online competition entry system
that will make entering the competition easier than ever before and
have chosen another exciting venue for the awards gala. Start planning
the projects that you would like to submit and look for all of the entry
information on the Call for Entry in the Spring Newsletter.
Finance, Rick Gillman
While you will often see our Finance Director, Rick Gilman, at a variety
of ASID events, much of the work of his committee goes on behind the
scenes. The importance of the financial function however cannot be underestimated.
Rick is a CPA with 36 years of experience working primarily
with interior design firms. As finance director, he works closely with the
president-elect to develop the annual budget for the chapter. In addition
to the annual budget, Rick is responsible for submitting quarterly financial
statements to the national chapter. The quarterly reports are the
vehicle for which the member dues are distributed to our chapter!
Advocacy, Krystl Loiterman
In Advocacy News: The Legislative Symposium is February 1st through
the 3rd in Dallas, TX. Mingle with coalitions while learning how you
can best advocate for your profession. Also, Capitol Day is slated for
Wednesday, April 10th. Call the State House Inn at 217.528.5100 to reserve
your room. http://www.thestatehouseinn.com/
Awards Committee: Call for volunteers! We are looking for experienced
designers for the Design Excellence Awards Committee. This is a great
opportunity to get involved and work on one of the chapter’s biggest events!
Forward inquiries to asidil@sbcglobal.net.
Professional Development, Mary Grether
Mary and her committee have been tirelessly planning the 2013 Design
Summit scheduled on Thursday, February 28. Details of the event and
registration forms can be found on page 12 of this Newsletter. With a
theme of “Grow Your Business, Grow Your Partners” this year’s Design
Summit is offering .6 hours of CEU opportunities.
Membership, Jean Charlton
This coming year, members will be provided with a multitude of networking
and educational events. Make sure your personal contact information is
current with ASID so you get the latest information. There are many ways
to stay connected with the Chapter: the ASID IL Chapter website, Facebook,
LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest. Links to all our social networking platforms
can be found on the ASID Illinois home page.
Peer Groups: To increase participation in peer group meetings, a new
peer group leader has been recruited for Chicago and a ‘new’ group has
been established for the southwest suburbs. Cynthia Smith will head up
the Chicago group and Stephanie Sarris will lead the newly founded southwest
suburban group. If you would like to attend a Peer Group meeting,
with an appropriate committee on which to dedicate their time and talents.
ASID Gives Back
ASID and Public Architecture Alliance Promotes Pro
Bono Design
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and Public Architecture
have entered into a new partnership agreement to support pro bono service
for nonprofits seeking interior design expertise. Through the initiative,
ASID members are encouraged to pledge to The 1% program, which challenges
design firms to commit a minimum of one percent of their time to
pro bono services.
Spay/Neuter Clinic, and Community Outreach programs along with many
volunteers to enable the organization to continue to save lives and expand
services. All volunteer opportunities at the Adoption Center focus on
getting to know potential adopters and providing them with the educational
information and resources to help them find their perfect match.
A broad range of volunteer opportunities are available and all information
can be found online at pawschicago.org/volunteer/volunteer-opportunities.
"From designing livable homes for veterans, to creating warm and welcoming
environments for children's hospitals, each day we hear about the many
inspiring service projects our members are working on in their communities,"
says Barbara Marini, FASID, IDEC, ASID's national president.
"Through our official partnerships with The 1% program, we aim to recognize
this work while also making it easier for any member who wants to
get involved in pro bono projects."
Firms involved in The 1% program, including ASID members, contribute
$9 million in services annually, on average. The new partnership is aimed
at providing members with the resources, opportunities, and support
needed to increase service.
Carol Stolt, Communications Director:
The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is a non-profit ecumenical organization that
serves thousands of people every year who need food assistance in the
communities of Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Glen Ellyn, Lisle, Lombard,
and Wheaton. The number of families served by the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry
has increased dramatically over the past two years. Currently, the Pantry
serves about 300 families every month (around 1200 individuals). With
Raise a Pint for the Food Pantry our goal is to raise $3,000.00 for the food
pantry so they can purchase new computers. Collect you coins in a pint
jar, when it’s full, log onto http://www.gofundme.com/RAISE-A-PINT-
FOR-GEFP
www.gofundme.org to make your contribution.
"The interior design community has played a necessary and important
role in The 1% program since its founding," says John Peterson, founder
and president of Public Architecture. "We're inspired by the vision at ASID
and its support of the profession's role in improving communities in need."
ASID Illinois Board Commits to Strategic Goal for
Community Service
As part of the ASID Illinois member survey last year, members overwhelmingly
expressed a desire to participate in community service events
through ASID. The ASID Illinois Board resolved to include an aggressive
commitment to community service organizations as part of their strategic
goals. Each member of the board identified a service organization in which
to dedicate their own and their committee’s time and talent. Each committee
under each board function will volunteer to participate in either a onetime
event or donate time in service to a particular organization. All ASID
members are encouraged to dedicate their time to these service groups.
You will find more information about upcoming volunteer opportunities
in the ASID Newsbrief, in future Inside Illinois Newsletters or you
may contact the appropriate board member.
The following are the community service organizations the board members
have chosen:
Janet Davidsen, President-Elect and Krystl Loiterman, Director at Large:
Pets Are Worth Saving (PAWS) Chicago is the city’s largest No Kill
humane organization, focused on implementing solutions to end the killing
of homeless pets. They have an adoption and humane center, the Lurie
Mary Grether, Professional Development:
Rebuilding Together Aurora (RTA) is a safe and healthy housing
organization that provides low-income homeowners in Aurora, Illinois
with critical home repairs, home safety modifications, and energy efficiency
upgrades. Using volunteer labor, and some donated materials, they
are able to provide these repairs free of cost to the neighbors in need.
Their work extends beyond the four walls of a home to impact the health
and vibrancy of the community.
The current project involves a community within Aurora called Pattersonville.
It has a community center and a strong neighborhood committee dedicated
to removing drugs and crime. The scope includes layers of assistance:
One is façade or streetscape improvements, next is making the
homes safe and accessible, and the third is to upgrade and bring the
interiors up to code. The goal is to work on 20 houses, and the general
streetscape. The actual physical work will be done April 26th and 27th.
Planning has just started, and, the Pro Bono Design Committee is planning
a charette in January at the College of DuPage inviting students,
emerging professionals, as well as professionals to come up with ideas.
We welcome any level of involvement. The committee is doing a neighborhood
walkthrough on Saturday December 15th. ASID members can
contact Mary Grether marygrether@sbcglobal.net for information and
Peer Groups
Both the Northwest Suburban and North Shore Peer groups met during
November. The Northwest Suburban group did a little something different
for this month’s meeting and participated in a cooking class to learn how to
make delicious desserts. Peer groups are a great way to meet and network
with other designers in a more intimate setting. Check the ASID Illinois
DIFFA Dining by Design
ASID board and committee members
attended DIFFA’s (Design Industries
Foundation Fighting AIDS) annual
Table Hop and Taste at the Dining by
Design event. The fundraising event,
held at the Merchandise Mart, showcases
three dimensional dining installations
by some of Chicago’s most
talented and creative designers. The
one-of-a-kind kind creative spaces
range from the practical to the fantastical.
Event goers were also treated to
food samplings from some of Chicago’s
top restaurants. It was a fun and
inspiring event for everyone and truly,
the food and libations were fantastic!
The Jonathan Adler installation,
featuring his new textile line, utilized
these large upholstered
chairs to create the “walls” that
defined the dining space.
Linda and Karen’s lovely tablescape featuring non-traditional elements and
colors. They advocate using colors that complement a home’s existing décor
for a more cohesive holiday display.
Christmas on the Fox
Karen Riordan and Linda Navara participated in the Christmas on the Fox
Art and Craft show in November. They created a beautiful holiday
tablescape and gave presentations to show attendees how to set a festive,
whimsical and elegant holiday table. They also gave show attendees
holiday decorating tips for the whole house. Participating in events like
Christmas on the Fox is a great way to not only promote your own business
but also the value of working with an ASID designer.
Keynote & Seminars
Design Summit 2013
Keynote Presentation: At Home/At Work: The
Trends Driving Residential and Commercial Design.
Residential design and commercial design are usually thought
of as separate disciplines. But in reality, ideas and applications
that surface in each of these markets are often re-interpreted
and crossover from one to the other.
Keynote Speaker: Paul Taylor
Design Management Practice and Marketing: Twelve
Reasons Why You Should Hire a Designer,
CEU-100288
0.1 CEU Credit Presenter: Paula Bongartz
Company: Hunter Douglas
The main objective of this seminar is to provide the designer
with innovative sales presentations. This seminar can help
position and grow the designer’s business by placing a strong
emphasis on the selling process. This seminar communicates
to the design community why it is important to become a sales
person first and a designer second. The selling process is the
key to repositioning and growing your business. This seminar
will give the designer some tools that they can incorporate into
their presentations. Some ideas may be things they already do
and others will be things they may not have ever thought
about.
Lighting Controls as a Component of Interior
Design, CEU-101317
0.1 CEU Credit Presenters: Patricia Mace &
Trip Speight
Company: Legrand
Lighting controls allow homeowners to control lights, ceiling
fans and small appliances from anywhere in the home, without
the need for special wiring or expensive master controllers.
Lighting controls can be integrated into a home for singleroom
or whole house systems. The intent of this course is to
discuss the role of lighting in design, and more specifically
how lighting controls can impact the olives of occupants and
performances of the home, including enhanced energy
efficiency.
Sustainable Bath & Kitchen Design, CEU-100412
0.1 CEU Credit Presenter: Garrett Dynes
Company: Kohler
We’re all connected. Healthier homes mean healthier people,
communities and planet. In this course, you will learn how to
design healthy and sustainable baths & kitchens, select
sustainable residential products, be able to integrate water
conservation plumbing products for LEED credits into
residential designs and communicate to clients the importance
of sustainable buildings.
Design for All, CEU-101453
0.1 CEU Credit Presenter: Jason McNeely
Company: Hansgrohe
Participants will engage in a discussion on the rapidly growing
aging population. With the growing number of adults needing
or wanting to age in their homes the importance of Universal
Design is more important than ever. As one ages, the use of
the bath changes from a place for pampering to a place of
necessity. The use of Universal Design principles and
selection of the proper products will allow you to blend the
user personal style while accommodating all users’ needs. At
the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to
identify the segment of the population with Aging-in-Place
needs; understand the seven principles of Universal Design;
choose bathroom fixtures that meet the users’ needs; design a
bathroom with proper placement of products in critical use
areas.
Mastering Presentation in the Workplace –A Skills
Workshop Presenter: Jason McNeely, Hansgrohe
Presentation skills and public speaking skills are a necessity of
work and life. Learn tips for successful interviews, clear and
concise communications, and how to write effective
presentations. These skills are important to be successful in
business, sales, training and building trust with clients.
Developing the confidence and capability to give good
presentations, speak well, and engage others is extremely
helpful for self-development, too. With the information gained
in this seminar, some preparation, and practice, you will be
an effective communicator, conducting successful client
demos and winning sales pitches.
Location to be determined.
Board Votes to Increase CEU Requirements
Effective January 1, 2014
ASID National recently decided to increase the CEU requirement for its
members from .6 every two years to 1.0. Below is an excerpt from a letter
from ASID National President, Barbara S. Marini, FASID, IDEC:
As we continue to focus on communicating the value of interior
design, the ASID Board of Directors has spent considerable time
discussing ways in which we can effectively accomplish that goal.
We know that to advance the profession, we must also continue to
sharpen skills, and add to our knowledge base on issues that impact
the built environment.
With that focus in mind, at the board meeting in June, the Board
approved raising the required CEUs for all members in the Professional,
Allied and Associate categories. Raising CEUs builds members’
competencies by expanding knowledge and encourages ASID members
to advance their skills relevant to specific practice areas. Our current
CEU requirement is no longer in line with other organizations representing
the built environment, however this initiative emphasizes
the Society's commitment to education. Establishing greater consistency
from a professional standpoint is important considering increased
efforts of collaboration in the profession.
Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from
0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours) for a two-year period. Note that this
does not affect the current reporting period, requiring 0.6 CEUs
by Dec. 31, 2013. The first reporting period with the new 1.0 CEU
requirement will begin Jan. 1, 2014, and end on Dec. 31, 2015.
CEUs can be easily documented on the IDCEC website, which
provides a great way to track all of your courses, including those not
part of the IDCEC database. ASID members may warehouse their
CEUs with IDCEC free of charge.
ASID is also expanding eligible CEUs, making it easier to reach 1.0
through activities including authoring a book or article, specialized
keynote speaking engagements, and for our educator members,
receiving tenure. Approved CEUs such as webinars and chapter
events will continue to be available and more CEUs are being developed
at the intermediate and advanced levels. Advancing the use
of technology to deliver innovative programs and CEUs will enable
us to move forward in this educational effort and ensure that our
members are well prepared for success … today and into the
future!
Value of Membership
Evidence-based design, the use of research to inform design decisions,
has long been used in the commercial design field. Evidence-based design
is a powerful tool that is now being increasingly applied to residential
design but likely not as often as it should be. ASID has recently published
a book that is available for free download to ASID members. The book
titled Home Making: Evidence-Based Design for Residential Environments
explores how residential designers can use evidence-based design research
to enhance the design process and ultimately improve the success of a
design. Using research in design rather than just choosing appealing
design elements will distinguish designers from their peers and empower
Design is often thought of as relating to the aesthetics of color, pattern
and texture but designers know that there is so much more involved
in creating a successful interior. The profession has successfully
educated clients that the expertise of a qualified designer also improves
the function of a space and adds to a client’s quality of life. Evidencebased
design takes that expertise a step further by really exploring the
psychological aspect of design. Having fact-based research to support
the efficacy of design decisions and combining this knowledge with
technical and creative skills creates a level of expertise that truly stands
out among the competition.
them to design more successfully.
Home Making: Evidence-Based Design for Residential Environments
Using research to inform design decisions is the foundation of evidencebased
design however applying research does not eliminate the personal or
creative part of the design process. In a section titled “What is Evidence-
Based Design?” the book states “When creating a space for your client, their
psychological and physical well-being is your top priority. Using research
can help you understand how and why your client is likely to respond to
your design, because people react in generally predictable ways to their
environment. This book introduces you to evidence-based design and famil-
was written to be a resource for designers but also provides a body
of information to allow designers to research further. A section titled
“Staying Current” suggests books, websites and reports that are relevant
to interior design related research. This book, which is available
through the ASID website, is a comprehensive source of information
that ASID has compiled to provide its members with a tool that enhances
their practice, refines their level of professionalism and reinforces
their expertise.
iarizes you with how you can incorporate research findings to create spaces
that satisfy your client’s fundamental physical and psychological needs.”
To obtain a copy go to aisd.org and login with your member login.
From the home page click on Knowledge Center > Publications > ASID
The book analyzes the effects of space planning, acoustics, visual elements
and materials and how clients generally react to them. Indoor air quality
and the impact of design on all of the senses is also explored. A comprehensive
analysis of programming and a room-by-room review examines
how designers can implement evidence-based research to truly
customize a space for each client’s particular needs, both physical and
psychological. The goal of applying evidence-based design is to improve
Research Publications > Evidence-Based Design for Residential
Environments. The publication is free to ASID members so you will
need to be logged in. You will need to go through a check-out process
to “purchase” the book. After you have checked out, the 84 page book,
in pdf format, will be emailed to you.
Greening Your Design
By Jase Frederick, ASID, LEED AP
Illinois Chapter Green Practices Advisory Council
“Do you ask for permission to do beautiful interior design? Don’t ask
permission to do sustainable design either.”
Start with Sustainability
As humans, we often get ideas in our heads about what something is. If
we hold on to those ideas long enough and repeat them often enough,
valid or not, they become, for us, fact. This may be the case with our ideas
about sustainability.
Our chapter’s Green Practices Advisory Council has a mission to promote
and support sustainable practices in the planning and implementation of
chapter meetings and events. The old perception of sustainability has been
slow to change in this arena as well. Yet, as in design, so in the logistical
aspects of our business, making sustainability the jumping off point brings
awareness of our actions, practices, and resources, and the consequences
In its early stages – which in many ways it still is – sustainability was regularly
equated with all things plain and utilitarian. The anti-aesthetic. What
if we were to recycle that old idea into acceptance and promotion of sustainability
not as a style or method unto itself, but rather as the underlying
and necessary foundation for everything we do as designers from concept
to implementation?
of those actions. Now more than ever – and for so many reasons – a foundation
of sustainability in what we do and how we do it matters.
There’s no need for heroics. It’s common sense born of awareness and the
letting go of old ideas. If we do what we can, to whatever degree we can, we’ll
no doubt find that sustainability becomes simply the way we do business.
In other words, if we’re still thinking of sustainable design as niche design,
we may be over-thinking. As a sustainability design consultant and
ASID member, Sharlyn Underwood, pointed out in a recent Icon article,
If you’d like to find out more about making your meetings, presentations,
events, and logistics effortlessly and beautifully sustainable, get in touch
with the Illinois Chapter’s Green Practices Advisory Council.
