Dogwood Dialogue
A newsletter of the Dogwood District of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc.
“Dynamic Dogwoods…. Investing in the Future”
Terry Waith, Dogwood District Director – TWaith@bellsouth.net
Spring/Summer 2010 Edition
Dear Dynamic Dogwoods,
We wish to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who volunteered
during the May, 2010, National Garden Club Convention in Atlanta. Many of
our club members read the “plea for help” from Barbara Taylor and Lisa Robinson
and responded by filling available positions. The NGC members and guests
enjoyed the Southern Hospitality! Kudos are coming from all over the nation.
Many of the garden clubs in our District took the time to brag about what they
had accomplished during the year. Books of Evidence were submitted last fall
and excitement mounted as awards were presented in May at the One Day Convention
in Macon for The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. This newsletter has a
complete listing for Dogwood’s Awards on page 7.
It was a pleasure reading all the Club President’s Reports of Garden Club
Achievements. To say our Dogwood District is Dynamic is an understatement.
At the upcoming August 10th District Board Meeting (at Hastings—10 am) we
will distribute the Standard of Excellence Awards to all those clubs who completed
the report and who qualified for the Award. Also, Certificates of Appreciation
for your club’s 2009-10 donations will be presented. Please review
the ‘Best Programs of the Year’ on page 18 of this newsletter. This information
was gleaned from the President’s Reports, and therefore the programs
listed come highly recommended from other clubs in our district.
The next newsletter will be published in mid-August— following the District
Board Meeting. If your club has a function it wishes to promote, please send
the information to Barbara before August 1st. Email: B.Bourque@comcast.net
During the summer most
of the clubs will meet to
discuss projects and budgets
for the coming term.
Please consider including
donations for some of the
programs listed on the next
page as part of your proposed
budget. For a complete
description of these
programs refer to the 2010
GUIDE, page numbers as
noted.
Together we will continue
to conserve, educate and
beautify!
NGC Convention Promoted WAFA
15 - 19 June 2011
Seaport World Trade Ctr
Boston, Massachusetts
Marsha Webb’s
WAFA Design
The 10th World Flower Show:
Marsha Webb Volunteered as a Hostess at the Design Banquet Friday
evening. Her WAFA Design is featured in the photo at left. Marsha was
asked to do this very tall floor design as a welcoming companion to the
table designs at the banquet honoring Judith Blacklock at the NGC
Convention and in the manner of the WAFA, 10 th World Flower Show
Logo. It took over 5 hours to complete this large floor design with three
globes that were unified by shape, color and repetition into one unit. The
heights of the globes were approximately 12 feet, 10 feet and 8 feet. She
could not have done this task without the wonderful help of Carole Smith,
Eddie Burdette, Frank Webb and Jimmy Ogletree. The mechanics were
many, many orchid tubes filled with both red gladiolas and white Casa
Blanca Lilies. These were then wired stem by stem onto wooden dowels.
These flower covered dowels were then placed on a diagonal inside each of
the globes on an axis. These three aluminum properties were hand-crafted
to precise specifications
and will be seen again
when used in a new
manner at the 10 th World
Flower Show next year in
Boston.
Remember Georgia's Children Foundation
This information is being passed along to Dogwood District clubs that may be interested in
assisting with this project.
Christy Zeigler is president of Remember Georgia's Children Foundation which is a not for profit
organization dedicated to celebrating the lives of all children. The Foundation is carrying out the
mission by building The Children's Park of Georgia. This park will be unlike any place in Georgia
to combine beautiful gardens and meaningful writings with the unified purpose of celebrating the
precious children that bless our lives.
This park will be located in Metro-Atlanta (in the Southern portion of Cherokee County) with easy
accessibility to interstates I-75 and I-575. They are very close to finalizing details of a partnership
with Cherokee County for this park that will serve our statewide community. Their biggest concern
is perpetual maintenance for the special
gardens. The county is happy to provide standard
maintenance that they would do in any other park;
however, they said they would not be able to
"prune a single rose". Fortunately, so many of the
community citizens have a passion for gardening
and community service. The challenge is to collect
letters of support and commitment that once this
special park is built, there will be organizations and
enough people who will help with the specialized
gardening.
Great Happenings at the Georgia Regional Hospital/Atlanta—
Thanks to Dynamic Dogwoods
Dogwood District has some hard working
volunteers. Read what GRHA has to say…..
Georgia Regional Hospital Garden Club News
Written by: Gail Raby, Community Resource Officer
GRHA is having an exciting year. The Fig Leaf projects were
received with many happy faces. GRHA sends a great big
thank you to all the clubs for their support.
In February Terry Waith was instrumental in contacting one of
DeKalb County’s master gardeners, Willie Mae McDaniel to
assist in educating the Activity Therapy Staff on the best ways
to utilize their garden space and also offering gardening tips.
We not only got to
have meetings with Mrs. McDaniel and Gary Peiffer but we were
able to receive a pruning class from Stan Leacock. From there
we were introduced to Lynwood Blackmon , and Bobby Wilson
(County Extension Agents ). They along with Johnnie Berry, Helen
Grogan, Terry Waith and Willie Mae McDaniel assisted us in
building 3 raised garden beds and they planted vegetables for us.
Then
Berry,
Grogan,
and Waith
gave us
some tips
on how to
maintain the crops. Wilson keeps close tabs on the
garden ensuring we are staying on top of things.
April 30 th Johnnie Berry, Helen Grogan, and Terry
Waith came out to assist in cleaning out the Skilled
Nursing Unit’s flower beds, trimming the wisteria,
and putting down new wood chips. I call them
the Awesome Three. It did not just stop with the
gardening; we were able to get a new sewing
machine for our Clothing Center thanks to The
Garden Club of Georgia.
Note from Terry: On May 12th two extension
agents installed three raised vegetable gardens
for the staff and clients. The Dynamic Dogwood
gardeners shoveled the compost (from the zoo)
into the beds as the guys built them. Then the
vegetables were planted: tomatoes, potatoes,
squash, peanuts, cucumbers and other varieties of
good things to eat!
Standard Flower Show in Douglasville
“Twist-n-Shout “
Ama-Kanasta, Skint Chestnut, Sweetwater,
and Town and Country Garden Clubs of
Douglasville, in cooperation with the Douglas
County Master Gardeners presented a
Standard Flower Show with the title Twist-n-
Divisions, Sections, and Classes were names
of or lines from songs, creating a musical
theme. The show had 460 beautiful
horticulture entries, 24 designs, 20 youth
design designs, 1 youth educational exhibit,
2 educational exhibits and a commercial
exhibit. All of the Top Awards offered were
I Love the Night Life
placed.
Catherine Arrendale, at the grand old age of 90, was the
first entrant in the Design Section. Catherine had a competitive
spirit, good taste and a flair for creativity. She chose “I Love the
Night Life”, a Capsule Functional Dinner Table for one, and
immediately began planning her design. She became ill and while
hospitalized told a fellow club member where she had stored most
of the components “in case anything happens”. She also had a note
regarding the details for her design including the black, white and
silver color scheme and the container. Included in the box were a
plate, two glasses, white napkins, a square silver napkin ring and
silver Christmas ornament balls.
She also had written a note that two lines from a Harry Lauder’s
Walking Stick were to be sprayed silver and dipped in diamond
dust and silver glitter. Sadly, Catherine passed away
unexpectedly in February. Another fellow club member
volunteered to execute Catherine’s plans and fill in her entry in the
show to honor her memory. Her efforts resulted in a blue ribbon
winning design repeating the blue Catherine had won in 2009 .
Buckhead Men’s Garden Club—repairs to the BSMM
(1) Spray Paint Vandalism on BSMM. (2) Buckhead Men's Garden Club President Bob Brown using the enamel
reducer on the Blue Star Memorial Maker. (3) After much rubbing, the marker looks better on this side.
This Director was notified that someone had spray painted the stars on the District’s Blue Star Memorial
Marker which was erected in April, 1988. The following steps were taken:
• The Blue Star Memorial Marker State Chairman was called and she gave me the name of the
manufacturing company.
• The company representative stated the marker would have to be returned to them so it could be
sandblasted and repaired. Cost - $750.00 including S&H
• The Garden Club of Georgia’s President was notified about the vandalism.
• The Atlanta Police Department was notified – no action was taken since it was not an insurance or
prosecution matter.
A person who restores cars recommended using an enamel reducer solution. With the help of the Buckhead
Men’s Garden Club President- this was partially successful. We will try removing the remainder of the spray
paint when more solution has been purchased.
Barbara Taylor,
GCG Historic
Preservation of
Gardens and Sites Chairman organized a tour on April 21st of the
historic landscape of Mr. and Mrs. Hull in Buckhead in order to
complete a Landscape Initiative Survey of their property. Designed in
the late 1920's by William C. Pauley, Atlanta's first landscape architect,
this stunning garden was in full spring bloom and much of the
landscape is original to the Pauley plan. The completed survey will
reside in the Cherokee Garden Library of the Atlanta History Center for
historic landscape architecture students and others interested in studying
these rare jewels. The day concluded with a tour of the Iris Garden in
Ansley Park and completing a survey on this beautiful woodland oasis
in the city. The Iris Garden was the project of the Iris Garden Club of
Dogwood District and was completed in 1930, winning them a prize in
1932 from Better Homes and Gardens!
