Director’s Column
To all whom these presents shall come
Greetings! In June, I attended the Far West Ski Association Conference, as a
delegate on behalf of the Las Vegas Ski and Sports Club. It was the usual sort of
conference at a posh, luxury resort in lush, Indian Wells, California, near Palm
Springs, with several meetings, semi-formal, award banquets, lots of partying and
other recreational activities like: golf, hiking, tours, bicycling and sunbathing at
the pool. !!!(Winner – Shirley White)!!!!
I was a little lost at first, since I have not been to a conference in some time. I
was soon looking for the conference badges and striking up conversations with
other delegates and vendors and members of our Sierra Council. The people who
make up the FWSA are as diverse as could be imagined; from engineers, travel
agency employees, resort and lodging employees, corporate raiders, government
employees, educators and charitable non-profit employees. Besides the common
interest in snow-sports, each individual, it seems, was full of bonhomie, and
involved in charitable work, the arts, politics and life.
One of the more important meetings of the conference was a speed-dating style of
delegate-vendor meeting. During this session, resorts, travel agencies, and special
service providers, such as the heli-ski companies met with small groups of
delegates, discussed their services, amenities and prices; and provided literature
and occasionally even videos of their facilities and activities. They all appeared
eager to accommodate our LVSSC and with the recent economic conditions, some
are offering special incentives. I have brought back my bag of swag and baubles
and delivered it to Kristina Sorensen, our trip director, for further review.
I also attended some of the educational workshops offered at the conference. I
regret that I did not attend all of them, because of a schedule conflict and fatigue.
Yet the ones that I did attend on Ethics, Finances and Developing Membership
through Social Media, were well prepared, informative and relevant to our club. I
am happy to report that based on my own, relatively unbiased observations, the
LVSSC is compliant with most of the best customs, practices and procedures of a
well organized, progressive club. From some of the comments of other delegates,
I think that there were several people, who were envious of the accomplishments
and efficiency of our organization. It did confirm, however, that there is always
something new to learn and room for improvement.
A common discussion topic among delegates was the decline in club
memberships and participation. It appears that there are so many competing,
virtual activities, especially among the younger skiers and snow-boarders, that
they are not willing to invest their time in organized, real-world, club activities.
Well, all I can offer in
response is, ‘You can’t
talk, nor cuddle with your
computer monitor in the
hot tub, like you can with
a nice glass of red wine,
some hors d’oeuvres and
a cute babe.’ I hope that
we can put some of the
information gleaned
from the conference to
work this year.
