Amanda is National<br />
Teacher of the Year<br />
Amanda Smith, programme<br />
leader for British Sign Language<br />
(BSL) and Senior Lecturer <strong>in</strong><br />
the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School, has been<br />
named National Teacher of the<br />
Year <strong>in</strong> the Signature annual<br />
awards for her supportive,<br />
nurtur<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>spirational<br />
approach.<br />
The Signature awards recognise <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />
and organisations who have made a<br />
significant contribution towards achiev<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
society <strong>in</strong> which deaf and deafbl<strong>in</strong>d people<br />
have full access.<br />
Jim Edwards, Signature Chief Executive,<br />
said, “Amanda is a deserved w<strong>in</strong>ner of this<br />
award. Her commitment to excellence <strong>in</strong><br />
the classroom and dedication to improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
her knowledge through research has<br />
had <strong>in</strong>credibly positive benefits for her<br />
students.”<br />
Amanda, whose first language is BSL<br />
rather than English hav<strong>in</strong>g been born deaf,<br />
teaches BSL levels 1 and 2 at <strong>York</strong> St John.<br />
She recently became a Teach<strong>in</strong>g Fellow and<br />
is soon to add BSL Level 3 to the classes.<br />
She engages her students <strong>in</strong> lessons with<br />
the use of role play, handouts and by<br />
arrang<strong>in</strong>g visits to a local deaf club so that<br />
they can ga<strong>in</strong> experience.<br />
They have also set up a Sign Café at the<br />
University, which is frequented by deaf<br />
students and local BSL users. Here they<br />
can practise their BSL skills and learn more<br />
about deaf culture.<br />

Comment<strong>in</strong>g on her accolade, Amanda<br />
said, “BSL is like learn<strong>in</strong>g any other<br />
language <strong>–</strong> you need to keep practis<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
enjoy what you are do<strong>in</strong>g and have a sense<br />
of humour! I am so delighted to receive the<br />
honour of be<strong>in</strong>g named teacher of the year<br />
by Signature and to w<strong>in</strong> this prestigious<br />
award.”<br />
Languages take centre stage<br />
<strong>York</strong> St John Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School<br />
were proud to take part<br />
<strong>in</strong> a week of activities to<br />
commemorate the French air<br />
squadrons based at Elv<strong>in</strong>gton<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g World War II.<br />
The French <strong>in</strong> <strong>York</strong> project was organised<br />
by the <strong>York</strong>shire Air Museum around the<br />
<strong>in</strong>auguration of a memorial <strong>in</strong> <strong>York</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ster.<br />
The event at the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
a show<strong>in</strong>g of De Lourds Souvenirs, a<br />
film of personal recollections by French<br />
airmen to an audience composed of the<br />
veterans’ families and friends, members of<br />
the Alliance Française de <strong>York</strong> and other<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested parties, school pupils from Lady<br />
Lumley’s School <strong>in</strong> Picker<strong>in</strong>g, and students<br />
and staff from <strong>York</strong> St John.<br />
This year’s European Day of Languages, on<br />
28 September, was marked at the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
School by an even<strong>in</strong>g event attended<br />
by Jo<strong>in</strong>t Honours Languages’ students,<br />
students and staff from other faculties, and<br />
pupils from local schools. They took part <strong>in</strong><br />
Breton danc<strong>in</strong>g, accompanied by live music<br />
on orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>struments, and led by Yannick<br />
M<strong>in</strong>vielle-Debat from French Dance for<br />
Schools. There were language and cultural<br />
taster sessions <strong>in</strong> Welsh, Japanese, Swedish,<br />
Russian and Mandar<strong>in</strong>. The even<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />
with a demonstration by the Kam<strong>in</strong>ari Taiko<br />
drummers, one of whom is Japanese tutor<br />

Alternative Languages Day.<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Fulford School Alternative Languages<br />
Day on 20 October, which <strong>in</strong>volved tutors<br />
and students from <strong>York</strong> St John who<br />
delivered sessions to Year 10 pupils <strong>in</strong><br />
Japanese language and culture, Mandar<strong>in</strong><br />
and British Sign Language. This event was<br />
made possible with Routes <strong>in</strong>to Languages<br />
fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
