Developing men of vision
in spirit, mind, and body.
That phrase, found on our letterhead, in all of our publications, throughout the school, and
frequently integrated into our talks with students, encapsulates the mission of Cathedral
Preparatory School. Since 1921, Cathedral Prep has been charged with the task of
developing men of vision – leaders – who will go out into the world and make a difference.
These men of vision – our Men of Prep – can be found in every segment of today’s society
– church, business, education, government, engineering, the arts, law, medicine and so on.
Although their career paths are highly varied, the common thread that bonds them
together is the principle-centered Catholic formation and education that they received at
Cathedral Prep.
Sadly, we live in an age that often determines what is right or wrong by whether or not it
makes us feel good, makes us popular or supports the status quo. Many people in positions
of power strive to be liked by others and thus fall into the trap of doing or saying things
purely to gain approval, accolades or votes from others rather than standing up for truth or
righteousness. Those are not the type of leaders that represent Cathedral Prep. As the adage
goes, what is right is not always popular, and what is popular is not always right. More often
than not, strong principled leaders go against the flow and are countercultural because they
stand for truth.
In reality, all of us are leaders to some extent. We all have influence over someone else. Thus,
someone somewhere looks up to us and is learning from us and modeling their behavior
after us. It is a good practice to reflect regularly on where we are leading others through
our words and actions and by what we stand for. We all are also followers because someone
influences our thoughts and the direction of our lives. Similarly, we might reflect on where
we are being led. As a Catholic school, Cathedral Prep not only has the opportunity, but
more importantly it has the responsibility to lead others to Christ and to develop leaders
who embrace a Christ-like style of leadership. Jesus, as evidenced at the Last Supper, was
a servant-leader who came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as ransom for
others. A life of service is reflective of the style of leadership that Cathedral Prep instills in its
students.
This issue of the Cathedral Prep Magazine highlights examples of leaders who have either
graduated from Cathedral Prep or are closely associated with the school in some way. Some
are leaders of families, organizations, businesses, institutions or in the classroom; others have
had to stand up for the truth at great risk to their reputation; and still others, like the featured
seminarians, are discerning a call from God to lead others through a religious vocation.
These individuals are a sampling of the type of leaders that Cathedral Prep strives to form
and to send out into the world. We are proud to have them affiliated with Cathedral Prep.
Please pray for our leaders, especially our men of vision – current and future – that they
remain principled and Christ-centered. More than ever, we need strong leaders to keep our
country, Church and society from straying from the path that leads to prosperity, life and
holiness.
Mary, Queen of Prep, pray for us!
Advancement News
with Chris Hagerty ’75
Then&NowBy Christine Eddy
Even though I know there are many, by far he is the most
passionate Prepster I have ever come across. Besides just
bleeding orange and black, he is a “Man of Prep” who would
literally lie down and die for the school. His passion is contagious
and fuels the fire for the advancement office. He consistently
displays a perfect trifecta of motivation, drive and zeal. It is my
privilege to feature my boss whom I have deemed “The Million
Dollar Man”, Chris Hagerty ’75, Director of Advancement.
Hagerty graduated from Prep in 1975. Following graduation, he
went to Mercyhurst College and received his bachelor’s degree
in education. He taught for several years and then found his niche in “radio land”.
Hagerty started in radio in 1989, working as a salesman at WLKK. In 1992, he formed
a company named Heart Broadcasting, Inc. and purchased 1530 AM. Soon thereafter,
Heart Broadcasting purchased 1330 AM and launched WFLP AM aka “Flagship 1330”.
Hagerty said, “The Flagship” was a talk and sports radio station with a pantheon of
characters including Prep grads, Jim LeCorchick ’65, Pat Campbell ’78, Bill Flanagan ’87,
Chris Hughes ’85, and Jeff Johnson ’89 among others.
In 2003, Hagerty’s friend, Brian Cullen ’80 and Board Member at Prep, contacted him to let him know that Prep was
searching for a Director of Advancement. Cullen thought his friend would be a good fit for the job. Hagerty met with
Father Scott Jabo and the late David Bowes ’59. He was hired for the job in January of 2003, and it changed his life.
Hagerty has overseen two capital campaigns in his time here. He was on the job only a few months before Fr. Jabo
announced a capital campaign called “Share the Vision”, which was a $3 million initiative to renovate the classrooms
and corridors of the school and also create the state-of-the-art Tablet PC program. Hagerty welcomed the challenge. “At
the time, it was the most ambitious campaign in school history, but thanks to the generosity and hard work of many, we
actually surpassed the goal and raised $3.2M. In 2008, we took a major leap by announcing an $18.3M campaign called
‘Transforming Lives’ that included renovations to the auditorium, science wings, and building the new Cathedral Prep
Events Center. We’ve raised $14M thus far, and the endzone is straight ahead.”
Hagerty enjoys working with the “Advancement Team”. “The most rewarding part of my job is working with a team of
hardworking, dedicated people who share my passion for Cathedral Prep. At the end of the day, it’s an awesome feeling to
know that we may have made a real difference in the lives of our young men.”
Being a student at Prep was a life-changing experience for Hagerty. “I arrived as an awkward, immature kid and graduated
with a confidence in myself that I never thought I’d achieve in four years. I wasn’t the greatest or most popular student.
Early on I actually had thoughts of leaving Prep, but the late, great Len Cyterski ’51 took me under his wing, and his
wisdom changed my life. Today, being at Prep is like a dream come true. To be a part of the history of this amazing school
is an experience that I wouldn’t trade with anyone. I’m really blessed to have been given the opportunity to lead Prep’s
advancement efforts.”
With two sons who have graduated from Prep and another upcoming, Hagerty said, “A Prep education is a gift that lasts
a lifetime. It is without question a game-changing, life-changing experience that charts a course of limitless possibilities.
Sharing that with my sons Dan ’06 and Kevin ’10 is really neat, and I’ll share it with my youngest son, John ’18, very
soon!”
With eight years under his belt, Hagerty has many great memories. He said, “ There are many highlights in my time at
Cathedral Prep, but none is greater than having the privilege of attending our commencement ceremony. Watching
young men who arrived here as boys walk across the stage at the Warner Theatre after receiving their diplomas is truly the
essence of our mission.” He continues, “Without question, my most memorable moment at Prep was the dedication of
the Cathedral Prep Events Center in September 2010. It was a dream that became reality, and to play a small role in that
dream is a memory that will be imbedded in my mind forever.”
Chris, thanks so much for your unwavering love and loyalty for Cathedral Prep. It’s infectious.
Called to Serve:
The Journey to
Priesthood By Christine Eddy
The road less travelled is most often the most challenging one. Yet finding one’s true vocation, no
matter how difficult the journey may be, is one of the triumphs in the eternal quest of people to find
existential answers about their humanity. Five Prepsters are currently on this journey at St. Mark’s
Seminary and are serious about discerning a possible call to priesthood. Jamie Power ’08, Paul
Kuzma ’09, Andy Boyd ’10, Dominick Sisinni ’10 and Robert NiCastro ’10 are Ramblers who have
experienced a unique call from God.
Paul Kuzma graduated from Prep in
2009. He knew that he wanted to enter
the seminary following his junior year at
Prep. Kuzma received his calling during
his Confirmation. “The bishop in a whisper
asked my sponsor for my confirmation
name and my sponsor whispered ‘Dominic’,
‘DOMINIC!’, boomed Bishop Trautman and
this startled me a bit, ‘be sealed with the gift
of the Holy Spirit’ and then ‘Peace be with
you’. I wasn’t prepared for such a loud voice
to come from a man standing only inches
away. With Sacred Chrism dripping from
my forehead, I was ready to be a soldier
for Christ; still, I wasn’t sure that I felt any
different, or what if anything I was supposed
to be feeling. It wasn’t until later that night
when I was reading a letter my sponsor had
written, that it all made sense. ‘As with any
gift’, he wrote, ‘there is more than the gift
given; the gift must also be received and how
it is received, determines the fruit that will
come from it. If someone gave you a bunch
of sunflower seeds you could throw them
away, eat them, give them to another, or plant
them and nourish their growth so as to have
them and enjoy them for years to come. So
too with the Holy Spirit which you receive
today; plant Him in your heart and nourish
your love for Him, and He will bless you with
true joy and peace, knowledge of His will,
hope, and love.’”
Kuzma said he wanted to enter the seminary
because he longed to deepen his relationship
with Jesus Christ and to discern a possible
vocation to the priesthood. “The seminary
is a unique college environment centered on
Christ, and while vocational discernment
might be possible elsewhere, the seminary
has a focus on this and a routine allowing for
daily prayer; I found this environment very
attractive.”
Prep influenced Kuzma’s decision. “I look
back on my four years at Cathedral Prep and
realize that my seminary experience began
not as a college freshman but as a freshman
in high school. The brotherhood that’s
continually preached, the mission to form
the whole man spiritually, intellectually, and
physically, the opportunity for daily Mass,
these things are evidence.”
Kuzma will complete two more years of
minor seminary at St Mark’s and four years of
study at a major seminary before ordination.
For as long as Andy Boyd can remember,
he’s always wanted to be a priest. He recalls
a memory from his childhood, “I had
mentioned that I wanted to be a priest to my
mom. While we were at Mass one Sunday, I
had said to her, ‘Mom, when I’m a priest, you
will have to come and visit me in my rectory.’
My mother ignored this statement, but as I
grew older, she realized that this might be
real.” One unforgettable incident that stands
out in Boyd’s head was when he was in second
grade. He met with the late Msgr. Joseph
Reszkowski and told him that he wanted to
be a priest. Reszkowski said, “Andrew, you
will be a priest when I’m in heaven. Know of
my prayers.”
Another key point in Boyd’s discernment
happened during a conversation between
him and his mother. “During my senior year
at Prep, my mom was asking me over and
over again if I was sure I wanted to enter
the seminary. I was a bit annoyed with her
because she would ask me that question at
least once a day. I adamantly answered, ‘Yes.
I love the Lord so much, and this is what I can
do to answer His call. This has been placed in
front of me, and I must at least try it.’”
Boyd explains why he wanted to be a
seminarian, “A friend once told me that
delayed obedience is disobedience. Using
this idea, if I were to ignore God’s call to the
seminary, I would not be where I am today,
and I believe that I would not be as happy
as I am now. There is a peace that I receive
when I am with the Lord, whether I am in
Mass, personal prayer, service, or fellowship,
and this peace is what allows me to be happy
FALL 2011
The Magazine of Cathedral Preparatory School
The thought of becoming a priest was always
prevalent for Jamie Power ever since
he was little. By the end of his sophomore
year at Prep, Power knew he wanted to try
the seminary.
There are a few incidents throughout Power’s
life that really stuck with him along the way
of making his decision. He remembers a
moment in grade school at Our Lady of
Peace, “In second grade, during one of our
Tuesday morning Masses, I was not paying
attention; during the eucharistic prayer, I
was, instead of kneeling like a devout young
Catholic, leaning back on my seat in the way
that overweight and elderly people do. My
teacher, Ms. Shermack, scolded me, saying,
‘Jamie, Jesus hung on the cross for three hours
and you can’t even kneel for five minutes!?’
This chastisement had a big effect on me –
after thinking about what she said, I realized
the importance of the whole thing (to the best
ability that a secondgrader can). Later that
year I received my first Holy Communion,
and I credit Ms. Shermack for giving me a
proper disposition with which to approach
the Eucharist.”
Power remembers when he entered Prep, he
was given a survey to fill out in Mr. Corey
Ferraro’s theology class, which asked basic
religious-biography questions. One of the last
questions on the survey asked if the student
had ever thought of being a priest. Power
said, “I distinctly remember spending some
time thinking about whether I should put
‘yes’ or ‘no.’ I knew that the true answer was
‘yes,’ but I had never told anyone of wanting
to be a priest and I didn’t want to tell anyone
– I was afraid of the attention that it would
attract, both positive and negative. I ended
up lying and putting ‘no.’ Mr. Ferraro (’97)
was my theology teacher during my freshman
year, and I thought he was a great teacher.
Not only did he teach the sound doctrine,
but he taught it well - and on top of that, he
encouraged us to deepen our spiritual lives,
especially praying that we might discern our
vocation. Right from the beginning of the
year, I took advantage of daily Mass, going
3 - 5 times a week. Before Prep, I had never
independently gone to Mass. It was in my
freshman year of Prep that I was able to
mature in my spiritual life. At Mr. Ferraro’s
behest, I prayed that God might reveal to
me my vocation; by the end of my freshman
year I was in love with the Mass, going to
confession on my own, and was willing to
accept priesthood as a possibility.”
In his sophomore year, he attended the
“priesthood” presentation given by Fr.
Edward Lohse ’80 during Prep’s career day.
Power said, “In his talk, he encouraged us
to apply to seminary, even if we were only
slightly thinking of priesthood, because
it is only in the prayerful atmosphere of a
seminary that you can discern your vocation.
He mentioned that we could easily just spend
a year in the seminary, make our discernment,
and then leave as an on-schedule college
sophomore. By the end of my sophomore
year, I was fairly sure that I at least wanted to
try the seminary.”
Power continued going to Mass and praying.
At the beginning of his junior year, he had
Mr. Murnock ’98 for music class. Power
said, “He, being a faithful Catholic, would
begin class with a bit of a theology lesson. He
strongly encouraged us to pray a rosary daily,
and thus I developed a strong devotion to
Mary and the rosary. By the end of my junior
year, I was almost sure that I was actually
called to priesthood. However, when time
came to apply for college, I got cold feet and
decided against the seminary – but I had the
intention that I’d transfer into the seminary
eventually. Thus, when my freshman year of
college was over, I applied to the seminary
and was accepted.”
Power admits, “I’m not so sure I would be
at St. Mark’s right now if I had not gone to
Cathedral Prep. There are a lot of reasons to
be proud of Cathedral Prep: the academics,
the athletics, the brotherhood, etc. The reason
that I am most proud to be a Rambler is that
Cathedral Prep is a school that was founded
in the tradition of the Catholic Church, and
that it, unlike many other ‘catholic’ schools,
has stayed true to that tradition. I am proud
that the students are given the opportunity to
attend Mass every morning and that we have
a theology program which teaches the true
teachings of the church.”
Power is pleased for the help along his journey.
“I’m grateful for the Theology teachers,
especially Mr. Ferraro who would always
encourage us to consider the seminary.” He
is thankful that his parents taught him to pray
every day, took him to Mass on Sunday, and
sent him to Catholic schools. He is happy
that he was able to really get to know some
great priests along the way, including; Fr.
Rich Toohey ’90, Fr. Raymond Hahn ’66,
Msgr. Bruce Allison’54, Fr. James McCormick
’74, Fr. Scott Jabo and Fr. Mike DeMartinis,
who were his faithful supporters.
Power is in his senior year at St. Mark’s.
He still has over four years left before he is
ordained.
These five Ramblers join fellow seminarian
Brandon Kleckner ’04 (VMA).
May the Holy Spirit continue to guide these
seminarians on their journey of faith and
formation.
There are currently more Prep students who
are interested in pursuing the priesthood.
Please pray for them.
The Bloomstines…
A Prep/Villa Dynamic Duo
By Christine Eddy
When it came to dating Villa grad Colleen Gallagher ’81, John
Bloomstine ’78 was a “Natural”. It didn’t take him long to
step up to the plate and ask Colleen to be his bride. John and
Colleen met in the summer of 1987. They were introduced to
each other by one of Colleen’s classmates from Villa, Paula Maus
Cameron ’81. Colleen knew there was something special about
their relationship right from the beginning, but John hit a homerun
when he had a baseball delivered in a box with a note saying,
“Here’s my pitch”, inviting Colleen to a baseball game. Colleen
went and became his “Angel in the Outfield”, and the two found
themselves in “A League of Their Own” and hit it off.
They were married on September 9, 1989 at St. Peter Cathedral
in Erie. Several Prepsters and Victors were in the bridal party
including Chuck Jenkins ’77, Richard Miller ’79, Chris Bloomstine
’77, Mark Bloomstine ’74 and Mary Heise Blatt ’81 and Renee
Diloretto German ’82.
John is the President of Erie-based Insurance Management
Company, a commercial property, liability and workers’
compensation insurance brokerage servicing clients that have
operations in 27 states and 25 countries.
The Bloomstines have five children. The eldest are twin boys—
Joseph ’12 and William ’12, both 18. Joe plays goalie for the Prep
soccer team. William is a forward for the Prep hockey team. Elise
’13 is 17 and plays soccer for Villa. Jack ’15 is 15 and hopes to
play golf for Prep. Peter ’17 is 13 and is in 7th grade at St. Peter
Cathedral School. The Bloomstines are very proud to have their
children enrolled at both Villa and Prep. “We know they are
receiving a great college prep curriculum combined with a focus
on Catholicism. The kids may not realize it as much as we see it,
but they are building lifelong friendships due to the brotherhood,
sisterhood and collegiate atmospheres within both Prep and Villa.
We have four in high school this year. Then the two oldest will
be off to college in the fall…four in college at one time, can’t wait!
We know that they will be well prepared to take advantage of the
opportunities in college and in life, to a great extent due to the core
curriculum and overall life-lessons that both Prep and Villa have
presented. Never was
another school talked
about in our home;
from day one, all sport
jerseys were orange and
black–the boys knew
they were off to Prep. Elise was very fortunate. She is in the first “all
girls” class that has returned to Villa!”
With five children marriage can sometimes be a challenge, but John
and Colleen center their marriage around their faith. “Our focal
point in life is our Roman Catholic faith. Our family is very busy; it
requires time and energy to sustain a life based on religion. If you
can stay focused on the overall mission, both private and business
life benefit. We all have to pitch in and help each other when
needed. The older children help with driving and errands. We find
that our best days are when we all pitch in and help each other. We
try to have meals together as a family. It becomes very hard during
the fall sports season, but when we are all around the table sharing
a meal, we feel blessed. We both have our families here in Erie.
We love our large family holidays with all the cousins, parents and
grandparents together.”
Prep and Villa have significantly influenced the Bloomstines. “Our
time at Prep and Villa laid down the foundation of maintaining
absolute integrity in all you do…a rock-solid commitment to
principles—our sense of what’s right and wrong; our reverence for
and sense of duty to others, both friends and community and our
compassion for those less fortunate, all of which lead to an extensive
record of service to community from us and in the future from our
children. The network of friends and business associates that began
at Prep and Villa continues today; you can’t put a price on that. We
are most proud of our marriage and being the mother and father of
five children.”
The Bloomstines love Erie and all it has to offer. In their spare time
they like to go sailing, to the beach and golf. Their fall is occupied
with school sports. During winter months they enjoy skiing, and
in the spring and then they try to fit in a trip to a warm destination.
Ramblers Come Home for Reunion Weekend
Classes ending in “1” and “6” gathered to relive
the thrill of their high school days at Prep
during Reunion Weekend 2011, which took
place July 22-24. Grads attended a picnic on Friday
night at the Cathedral Prep Events Center. Two
hundred and seventy-five Prepsters packed the
place for the chance to reconnect with their classmates. There were
many father and sons who were able to celebrate their reunion years
together. “Jazz Attic” featuring Martin Zegarelli ’12, Paul Vojtek ’11 and
Alex McLaughlin ’11 served as the entertainment for the evening.
Classes held their individual activities on Saturday. Golf outings,
picnics and dinners were held to celebrate with just classmates. Frank
Kroto ’56 and Fritz Curtze ’71 hosted their friends at their own homes.
The Class of ’86 met at the Colony Pub and Grille, owned by fellow
classmate Kevin Camp. Chris Sirianni ‘96, The Brewerie at Union Station
owner, provided beer and appetizers for his classmates. The guys from
’66 and ’01 made Calamari’s their meeting place on Saturday night. ’81
and ’91 classmates golfed over the weekend and met at McKean Park
and the Plymouth on Saturday night, respectively. Rumor has it the
Class of ’06 had to stake their claim on a picnic pavilion at Glenwood
Park before the sun rose! Whether hitting the links, meeting for a
picnic, or reminiscing over a drink in downtown Erie, it was a great day
to catch up and reconnect with old friends.
Reunion attendees regrouped at Prep on Sunday for Mass and
breakfast. One hundred thirty attended the Mass held in the H. David
Bowes Auditorium followed by breakfast in the cafeteria. The Mass
was in memory of former Athletic Director, coach and teacher Tony
Zambroski ’48 who passed away just weeks before. Zambroski’s wife,
Marianna attended the Mass along with other family members. The
Mass was concelebrated by President Fr. Scott Jabo, Fr. Raymond Hahn
’66 and Msgr. Jim Sanner ’51. After Mass, alums travelled through the
school down to the cafeteria
’51 from Royersford, PA
brought along his keyboard
and played music during
breakfast.
Following breakfast, the
school was open for informal
tours. Many men took the opportunity to once again visit the
legendary locations that they have never stopped thinking, talking,
and laughing about. Although the building has undergone significant
upgrades and renovations during the past few years, which became
immediately apparent, many observed that the integrity and character
of the school remained intact. There were some changes, to be sure,
but it was still the same Prep they remembered. While roaming the
halls, many had the chance to shop in the Rambler Retail store to
purchase the most up-to-date CP apparel.
Alums from near and far came out for the weekend to reunite with
some of their brothers that they hadn’t seen for a few years or even
decades. The distance award goes to Don Felix ’66 who travelled from
Mesa, AZ…followed by a close second…Mark LaJohn ’76 of Jackson,
Wyoming.
Celebrates 50th
The Class of 1961 spent graduation weekend
celebrating their 50th reunion with a litany of activities.
A stag picnic was held on Friday night. Approximately
85 Ramblers showed up to reconnect and reminisce.
The Class gathered for some golf on Saturday morning
at Crab Apple Ridge, followed by a dinner/dance at the
Maennerchor that evening. President Father Scott Jabo
and Sr. Jean Baptiste, a former teacher spoke to the class.
Events continued on Sunday. Many gathered for a special
Mass and brunch prior to getting together at the Warner
Theatre to walk in with the Class of 2011. No matter what
the class year may be, all Ramblers have one thing in
common—a bond between brothers that is undeniably
present and unshakable.
The Class of 1961 had a great turn out for their picnic at the Cathedral Prep Events
Center.
Warren Buffet Hand Picks Prep Grad for
Top Job at Berkshire Hathaway
When Warren Buffet began to search for an investment
manager to join his company, with the possibility
of managing the portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway upon
his retirement, he didn’t have to look any further than
the 1979 Prep yearbook. That happens to be the year
R. Ted Weschler graduated from Cathedral Prep, and on
Monday September 12, the announcement was made that
he would be joining Berkshire. In 2000, Mr. Weschler
formed a company called Peninsula Capital Management
based in Charlottesville, VA (yes, named after OUR
peninsula!), and his amazing success with his company
R. Ted Weschler ’79
and many other reasons led Mr. Buffet to the conclusion that Ted was the right
man for the job.
Ted’s dad, Frank Weschler ’31, moved his family back to Erie in the mid 70s so
his youngest son could attend his alma mater. Frank Weschler recognized the
transformational value of a Prep education, and passed the gift on to his son.
Ted took advantage of the opportunity, and the rest is history. Ted Weschler
is a shining example of a Prep man through and through, and whether it’s in
Omaha, Charlottesville, or anywhere in between, Ted will always carry the Prep
flag with pride: “Cathedral Prep has played such an important role in my life.
As I look back, my four years at Prep provided the foundation for me to strive
for excellence, realize my full potential, and taught me that anything is possible
through integrity, hard work, and dedication. I will be a Rambler forever.” Ted
credits his many teachers and mentors like Eleanor Gwynn for providing the
foundation he mentions above.
Cathedral Prep has no doubt that Ted Weschler will continue to be wildly
successful in his new position at Berkshire Hathaway. It’s just one more story
of how Cathedral Prep develops tomorrow’s leaders, today. Thanks for making
Prep proud, Ted!!!
Up Close & Personal
with Tony Del Rio
Theology Teacher
Being a teacher is one of the most valuable and
important occupations out there. After all, teachers
are partially responsible for shaping the futures of
young minds. Theology teacher Tony DelRio is entering
his third decade of teaching at Cathedral Prep. He is
quite passionate about his job and will be the first to
admit that it never stops.
Christine: What did you do prior to coming to Cathedral
Prep?
Before I came to Cathedral Preparatory School, I was in the
Carmelite Order for fifteen years. I was educated by Carmelites
and Jesuits at Marquette University. I did apostolic work at St.
Giles Parish – an inner city church – and St. Anthony’s Home for
Emotional Disturbed Boys.
Christine: What did you do as a Carmelite?
I was assigned to various places. I did student teaching in
Louisville, KY – teaching French, Spanish and world history. I was a
Cadet Teacher at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, my alma
mater. I was assigned to teach English and history. I coached cross
country and track.
When the time came to enter novitiate, I returned to Milwaukee
to join my classmates and spent time at the Abbey of Genesee,
Kresge House of Prayer in Detroit and then New Baltimore, PA.
When I was assigned to New Baltimore, St. John the Baptist Parish
and Retreat House, I found PA to be home.
Christine: Why did you want to work for Cathedral Prep?
The values instilled by my parents and the Carmelites evinced a
true love of learning, a dedication to God and love of service to
mankind. It was my alma mater’s motto, back in the day and even
now, “Give us your boys and with hard work, we will give you back
Men.” The dedication to building character, academic excellence
and respect and responsibility were the same characteristics that
attracted me to Cathedral Prep.
Christine: How many years have you taught at Prep?
I am now entering my thirtieth year of teaching are Prep. I came to
Prep, teaching senior theology, chemistry and algebra, after two
years of teaching science in Pittsburgh. While in Pittsburgh I was
sacristan for St. Lawrence O’Toole, member in the choir and taught
religious education.
Christine: When will you retire?
I don’t feel anywhere near ready to retire, and I am still teaching
because I love what I do! Oftentimes, I run into alumni at the
school, at church or out at a restaurant; former students always
start by asking how things are Prep, and they fill me in on what is
happening in their lives.
They were thrilled to see a familiar face still at Prep. They also
graciously lied and told me that I look the same. They came for
different reasons which have allowed me to think more deeply
about what I do, why it’s important, and what really matters.
Christine: What do you feel is the most important thing to
know when it comes to dealing with having the most success
with your students?
From my perspective the answer is simple though the reality can
be challenging. Building a classroom community and establishing
strong relationships with your students is one of the most crucial
aspects of being a successful teacher. Knowing the curriculum
and being passionate about what you teach clearly matters, but if
you don’t make strong connections with your students it will not
matter that you are a science genius teaching chemistry. You have
to know your students well, not just what they can do in school
but you have to learn about what matters to them outside of
school as well.
Gourmet foods and delectable desserts left faculty and staff having a difficult time making it up to the fourth
floor following “Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day” in May. The Mary Queen of Prep Women’s Society treated
employees to a significant spread of delights. The food was on display for everyone all day long, which made it
difficult for dieters to resist. Faculty and staff helped themselves in the morning to cookies, breads, fresh fruit, coffee
and juices. The afternoon was more like a gourmet feast. Employees had a parade of food to choose from, such as
antipasto salad, warm casseroles and pasta salads galore. In addition to the main course selections, several women
donated their time to make some unbelievable desserts including cheesecake, pies and pastries. Thanks to the Mary
Class of 2011 Joins a Brotherhood of Over 13,000 at Baccalaureate
Despite the grueling temperatures in the mid-90s, the Class of 2011 arrived at St. Peter Cathedral dressed in suit jackets and ties with
sizable smiles on their faces on May 31 for what could have easily been deemed the toastiest baccalaureate in Prep history. It was
standing room only as family and friends filled the Cathedral for this long-anticipated event.
The celebratory Mass is a chance for the seniors, their families and the faculty and administration of Cathedral Prep to come together for
one last time before saying goodbye at graduation. It gave students a chance to share their faith with friends and family and remember the
wonderful times the Class of 2011 shared together.
The Mass was celebrated by President Fr. Scott Jabo along with several priests who
concelebrated, including Fr. John Miller, Fr. Shane Matthew, Fr. Johnathan Schmolt,
Fr. Mike DeMartinis and Fr. Steve Schrieber. The following Prep alumni also
concelebrated; Fr. John Detisch ’80, Msgr. Bob Brugger ’60, Msgr. Richard Mayer ’53,
Fr. Tom Brooks ’70, Msgr. John Hagerty ’47, Fr. Nick Rouch ’79, Fr. Raymond Hahn
’66, Fr. Matthew Kujawinski ’95, Msgr. Gerry Orbanek’58 and Fr. Bill Barron ’99.
Deacon Jason Feigh was also present.
One memorable tradition at Baccalaureate is the moment when each senior is pinned
by an alumnus of the school. Many were pinned by their fathers who walked down
the same path when they attended Prep. Some students were pinned by their
grandfathers, uncles, teachers, coaches or friends. No matter what the age, every
alumnus shares a common bond of brotherhood. One hundred thirty-six seniors
Kevin Holland ’12 and President Fr. Scott Jabo.
were welcomed into that brotherhood at Baccalaureate. They join a brotherhood of
over 13,000.
Class of 2011 Starts a
New Beginning
One hundred thirty-six eager graduates lined up in white tuxedos
on the steps of the Warner Theatre on Sunday, June 5, to embark
on a new journey. It was the day that they have been dreaming about
since they stepped foot into Cathedral Prep as freshmen. The Class of
1961 joined their younger brothers and walked into the Warner behind
the Class of 2011. It was inspiring to see the graduates of 50 years ago
unite with the newest alumni class.
Seniors Dan Fromknecht and Sean Bloomstine spoke to their class.
Both seniors themed their speeches around “confidence”. Fromknecht
spoke about “Going Forth with Confidence” and “Gaining Confidence
Throughout the Years”. He summed up a Man of Prep, “Our attitude
and approach to challenges in our lives have changed. Perhaps the most
important thing Prep has taught us is confidence; the confidence to
be ourselves in every situation; the confidence to take a leading role in
daunting tasks; the confidence to stand up for what is right and what
we believe in. This spirit is unmistakable in a Prep man. He has poise
and certainty even in the most troubling of circumstances. He is not
afraid to reach for his goals, even while all others doubt him.”
Bloomstine’s speech was titled “Confidence in the Years to Come”. He
said, “Any school could instill a good education, and the importance of
service into its students, but Prep offers something even more special,
the chance to grow and live in a faithful relationship with God, and
Cathedral Prep’s Catholic education has strengthened and fortified
our faith in God to withstand even the most trying times.” Bloomstine
added, “Prep has instilled its students
Bishop Donald Trautman and President
Fr. Scott Jabo spoke to the class. Both
wished the Class of 2011 well on all of
their future endeavors.
There was one moment at this year’s
graduation that stands out from others.
When Zac Czerwinski walked across
the stage to receive his diploma, his
brothers (all 136 of them), along with
the administration, faculty and staff gave
him a standing ovation. Czerwinski was
diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma (bone
cancer) in the fall of 2009. He went
through chemotherapy and surgery to
remove the tumor, followed by more
chemotherapy. He had been in and out of school right up until the very
end of his senior year.
Congratulations to the entire class who received $8,037,346 in
scholarships (that’s over $61,354 per student); 96% are going to a fouryear
college.
Kentucky Mission Trip…a Spiritual Getaway
This summer a group of 22 missionaries from Erie journeyed to Vanceburg, Kentucky. While there, they participated in
different forms of service such as painting, cleaning, and participating in a revival on the road, just to name a few. Along
with their daily service, the group also welcomed their friends to their camp for revivals.
Father Mike DeMartinis who has been on countless mission trips said, “This trip was one of the best I’ve experienced in the
past 23 years in Kentucky. The students involved in the trip knew that the ministry done in Kentucky is not only a one-week
experience. They continue their ministry in Erie at their schools, neighborhoods and the Blessed Sacrament teen mass.”
Everyone who went on the trip got something out of it. Victoria Martin said, “Kentucky was amazing! Not only was it an
amazing trip but it was with amazing people.”
Returning participant Alyssa Boxer said, “The week is a wonderful experience that I have been privileged to take part in
multiple times. It’s a great place to connect with wonderful people and reset your faith.”
To help center the participants, each trip is based around a theme. The theme for this week was “the road to reflection”. With
the theme in mind, the missionaries set out to do service for the people in the Kentucky area as well as center their work on
God.
Chris Peck’93 sums it up the best, “As beautiful a place as Vanceburg, KY is to stay for a week, it’s the people we meet and the
relationships made that are even more special and have a lasting impact upon our lives. It is through them and their faith that
helps us to see Jesus and return home better people.”
Ramblers Roll
Past Goal for
Relay for Life
For the third time, the Prep Key Club participated in the American
Cancer Society’s Relay for Life at Gus Anderson Field. This year’s
Relay was held in beautiful and HOT weather on Saturday, July 16,
through Sunday, July 17. Each participating team raises donations
leading up to the event, picnics at the event, camps overnight
and most importantly keeps at least one member of their team
on the track at all times during the 24-hour relay. In the words of
ACS, we are called to Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back.
This year’s cochairs, Marco Montefiori and Anthony Squeglia,
organized a dress down day in the spring quarter and a spare
change collection to begin the fundraising. Student fundraising
and walking teams were organized, including students from all
grade levels as well as recent graduates and teachers. For the first
time, the club organized an online fundraising drive and received
donations from faculty and staff, family, and friends. Our initial
team goal was $1,000. When the final tally was complete, Prep
Key Club had raised $2,030 for the American Cancer Relay for Life,
surpassing our goal by 100%.
Along with the donations made to the Relay, our generous
supporters provided us with an outstanding potluck picnic and
plenty of cold drinks on a very hot summer Saturday. Also new
this year, the Erie Kiwanis, the Key Club’s sponsoring organization,
purchased a fantastic pavilion tent and coolers to make the event
even more enjoyable. The Key Club is looking forward to using the
tent and coolers in many Relays to come.
Members of the Prep Cross Country team made a special
appearance to run, not walk the 5:30 a.m. laps to show solidarity
and strength. When Ramblers weren’t rolling around the
track, they kept busy by competing in cornhole tournaments,
witnessing a beautiful luminaria service, checking out the on-track
entertainment. Also Ramblers attended Mass celebrated by Fr.
Mike DeMartinis Saturday evening on the football field.
A great team, Prep students, families, faculty and staff, and friends,
made Relay great fun and a great success. Thank you to all who
supported us and participated.
The 2011 Cathedral Prep golf team had the
not have been any more accommodating as
he signed hats and clubs and posed for photos
with the players, living up to his reputation as
“The King”.
Latrobe Country Club is located about 40
learned golf at an early age from his father,
got his motor runnin’ and
cruised down to Prep
to show off his custom
painted “Prep” Yamaha
Roadstar. The bike,
which is black, features
“Ramblers” down the front
and the “CP” logo on the
back and sides. Even the
seat is orange and black
alligator skin! As if that
wasn’t enough, he has an
orange LED light on it that
looks good at night. With
or without a Prep license
plate tagged on the back,
you know he’s a diehard
Rambler. It makes for a
great conversation piece,
although some McDowell
grads may disagree. Just
ask Ron.
In Case You Were Wondering…
The Power of Prayer
By Hon. Dan Brabender ’70
This photo of the football team praying on the steps of the Cathedral was taken in the early 90s. The late Mina George is standing on
the steps near the lamppost. George coached the team from 1980-1995.
The power of prayer has always been an important part of Cathedral Prep athletics, from the Ramblers’ first football game
against the Wesleyville Athletic Club on October 11, 1924 through the present 2011 season. The invocation of prayer has
been an integral part of impressive victories, disappointing losses and more than a few championships. Oftentimes students
would have teachers like Sister Cornelia “praying fullback”, Sister DePaul “praying halfback” or Sister James Francis “praying
quarterback”. Maybe it’s the reason Prep’s popular motto over the years has been “the bigger they are, the harder they fall”??
The time-honored tradition of Rambler gridiron teams praying and giving thanks on the steps of St. Peter Cathedral following
every football game has its origins in the 1946 season, when new coach Ted Sowle, a devout Catholic from Grand Rapids, MI,
was so elated after season-opening upsets over Farrell (12-6) and city favorite East High (20-6), that he demanded his charges
kneel on the steps of the revered Cathedral and give thanks to the Lord. It was the dawning of a new era, and all of a sudden
Prep football was the talk of the town. The event caught on and Ramblers gridders have knelt on the same steps after every
battle since, now 66 years, to give thanks to God Almighty—win, lose or draw.
Present coach Mike Mischler ’87 has noted that it was the power of prayer that eased the pain and hurt his 1999 squad suffered
after the devastating loss in the state title game—and further gave them the real strength to steamroll to the 2000 championship.
Moments after any Rambler football game, you’ll see the team bus pull up in front of the Cathedral. Exiting will be the entire
squad and its staff. Quietly prayers of thanks will be said by all, followed by a pair of rousing cheers: “Mary, Queen of Prep, Pray
for Us!”
