Happy birthday to all our special residents who have recently celebrated milestone birthdays!
Gladys Flynn
Almost 80 family, friends, residents and staff from Ozanam Villa, Lismore came
together on 5 January to celebrate Gladys Flynn’s centenary. This most senior
and longest-term resident of the service was joined by her three surviving children,
13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and other family members.

Gladys’ tips to reach 100 years of age and still enjoy life are simple - clean living,
no alcohol or cigarettes and eating plenty of good quality chocolate!
Bertie Walters
Bertie Walters of St Joseph’s Aged Care, Coffs Harbour, celebrated his 100th birthday in February.
Bertie was born in 1913 in Coffs Harbour and worked as a sawmill worker, dairy hand, farm hand and
bullock team driver transporting timber.

At 80 years of age, Bertie met a wonderful woman and married for the first time. He considers his
greatest achievement to be his service in the Second World War in the 15th Light Horse Regiment.
According to Bertie, “The most important thing in life is to live and mix peacefully with everyone.
We all need to be tolerant and accept people’s differences.”

Annie Berkley
Annie Berkley, a resident at Lewisham Nursing Home, Lewisham, was born on 24 February, 1906 and
this year celebrated her 107th birthday. Annie grew up in Canowindra and spent her adult years in
Bondi, Sydney, then retired in Dulwich Hill.
Annie has eight children and numerous grandchildren and great grand children.
Lewisham Nursing Home celebrated Annie’s birthday with entertainment, dancing, and cake.
Sadly, Annie passed away on 14 April 2013.

A morning tea was held for Raymond ‘Denny’ Herps, a resident at Charles O’Neill Hostel, Mayfield
West, who turned 102 in February. Staff members and friends came together to wish Denny all the
very best for his 102nd year!

On 2 February, Jean Gibson, a resident at Holy Spirit Dubbo, Dubbo turned 101 years of age.
Jean’s family came for morning tea to help Jean celebrate the mighty occasion.
