Long serving doctor retires from Lourdes
Doctor Sahukar has been associated with Lourdes Hospital
and Community Health Service (Lourdes) in Dubbo for the
past 38 years, and it was with sadness that he announced his
retirement in January 2013.
Doctor Sahukar
Having trained and completed his
fellowship in Edinburgh, Dr Sahukar
held orthopaedic posts in England from
1961 to 1974. He met his future wife,
Dr Kavanagh, and they were married
in Sydney, before moving to Dubbo
in 1975 where he held the positions
of Visiting Medical Officer (VMO)
and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Dubbo
Base Hospital. During this time, Dr
Sahukar also conducted orthotic and
orthopaedic clinics at Lourdes for the
Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de
Paul. In 1981, Dr Sahukar commenced
general practice and in 1982 was
appointed a VMO in rehabilitation
medicine at Lourdes.
Volunteer named 2012
Forbes’ Citizen of the Year
Pam Toole, a volunteer of
some 30 years at Jemalong
Pam, who is 78 years old, said
that what she enjoys most about
volunteering as a hairdresser is,
“I found doing rehabilitation at Lourdes
Hospital for the aged was challenging
and a very good experience. It is very
satisfying to see the progress of the
patients gaining independence after
their recovery,” he said.
In recognition of Dr Sahukar’s
contribution to Lourdes, the Dr Sahukar
in 2008 to celebrate individual
staff members or teams that show
outstanding innovation and excellence
in their service provision.
According to Dr Sahukar, it is team
work that makes Lourdes a special
place to work.
“Lourdes Hospital, I believe is unique
because of the team work, no matter
what your position is in the hospital,”
Dr Sahukar said.
In his resignation letter, Dr Sahukar, said,
“I would like to express my confidence
in the continuing mission of Lourdes
Hospital and Catholic Healthcare to
work for the community in Dubbo and
the region, providing hope and dignity
for our patients and clients.”
Pam Toole
“To see the joy on the customers’
faces when their hair is done and
also the companionship of fellow
workers… I love what I do, just love
to help people.”
Pam has plans to retire this year,
however, she has also made it clear
that if ever her help is needed she is
“only a phone call away”.
