North Texas is back at home for two
games this week beginning tomorrow
night with Texas Woman’s University.
North Texas will conclude the week with
a road trip to Grambling State in the final
non-conference game this season. North
Texas is a combined 6-0 against the three
upcoming opponents this week.
A Sign Of Respect
Despite losing two games over the weekend,
North Texas remains ranked 15th in
the Central Region. The Mean Green’s
only blemishes on the season have been
to No. 20 USC, No. 32 Nebraska, and
SMU, which is ranked 9th in the Central
Region.
Hutyra Inches Forward
Junior Heather Hutyra notched her 28th
career goal and 69th career point over the
04’ 05’ NCAA Tournament
weekend. She is now tied for sixth place
all-time in goals and seventh place in
points at North Texas.
Strong In September
North Texas has been a strong starting
team in years past, posting a record of 65-
20-05 in the month of September. Despite
two losses this month, North Texas has
never had more than three losses in the
month of September.
Losing A Good Thing
Not to often has North Texas had a losing
streak. In fact the longest losing streak
in history is just three games, which has
happened only twice in school history. In
the past three seasons, two game losing
streaks have actually been a good sign
of things to come. Since 2003, the Mean
Green has suffered three, two-game losing
streaks. Last season North Texas went on
Offense Looking For Breakout Game
While the North Texas defense has been
as good as advertised, the Mean Green
offense has yet to have a breakout game.
Through the first five games North Texas
has scored only seven goals, the fewest in
school history through five games. However
things could change after this week’s
three games. Against the three opponents
this week, North Texas is averaging 8.1
USC scored two first half goals to slip by
the North Texas (2-2-1) women’s soccer
team 2-0 in the final game of the Nebraska
Adidas Invitational. USC (4-1-1) began
things early as Nina Loucks scored 97 seconds
into the match off a cross from Amy
Rodriguez to make it 1-0. The Trojans
added to the lead in the 18th minute of
play when Rodriguez scored on a rebound
to make it 2-0 USC. Heather Hutyra and
North Texas head coach John Hedlund has added two new faces
to the coaching staff this season. Jim Zakel and Michelle Dineen
will both be assistants this season. Zakel returns to Mean Green
soccer after spending three seasons as the head coach at Nicholls
State from 2001-2004 where his team produced 15 all-conference
selections and 32 academic all-conference picks. As an
assistant coach at North Texas, Zakel helped the Mean Green
achieve its first national ranking in 2000. Dineen, a Monroe, Ohio
native, comes to North Texas after a successful playing career at
Ball State University and coaching club soccer. Dineen played
Head coach John Hedlund
Having established himself as one of the most prominent coaches in the Central Region,
John Hedlund, who is in his 12th year at North Texas, led the Mean Green soccer team to
its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and a school-record 16 wins in 2004.
How did Hedlund follow that up? Easy. Hedlund equaled that performance by leading
the Mean Green to back-to-back SBC titles in 2005 and a second straight trip to the
NCAA Tournament. Hedlund was also named the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Coach of
the Year. Last season North Texas set numerous school records and had the nation’s third
longest unbeaten streak at 15 games
Since starting the program from scratch in 1995 by implementing a gameplan that
emphasizes recruiting from the surplus of talent available in the Lone Star State, the
Mean Green has vaulted into one of the premier programs in the state of Texas. During
Hedlund’s tenure at North Texas he has won 153 games and currently ranks 16th among
active coaches in the NCAA in winning percentage.
During his 11 years as the head coach of the Mean Green, Hedlund has seen 39 players
selected to the all-conference team, 11 players named all-region, and the Mean Green has
never had a losing season in the program’s history. Under Hedlund’s leadership North
Texas has captured three Sun Belt Conference regular season championships and two
Sun Belt Conference Tournament titles.
But winning is nothing new to Hedlund and the Mean Green. His teams have been
ranked in the Top 10 in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz in 10 of the last 11 years,
with the 2005 club posting the school’s best-ever record of 16-4-2.
Hedlund’s program can boast having never had a losing record. Since joining the Sun
Belt Conference six years ago, the Mean Green have established themselves one of the
league’s premier programs. With the program’s success has come recognition for Hedlund
and his players. Three years ago Hedlund was recognized as the North Texas Coach
of the Year by the Dallas Morning News and the Dallas All Sports Association. This past
season Hedlund was named the Coach of the Year by the Greater Denton Sports Commission
for a second straight season.
