CATELLA LAB
When you are ready to take your dental lab digital…we can help.
There's a lot of talk about digital imaging. It's no longer a debate about whether you
should move away from film or if the proper digital imaging technology exists, but rather
when and how. If you wait, will prices drop significantly? If you wait, will there be a new
breakthrough in technology?
Until now the big question was how you could store, distribute, and share these images
with patients and referring dentists in an organized and cost-effective manner. Also
important was how such a system could be installed and how personnel could be
trained quickly and without major disruption to your center.
The Answer is Catella.
®
Catella-LAB is our answer for a cost-effective, easily maintained PACS for dental labs.
Catella-LAB takes all of the key elements of our large medical PACS solutions and
packages them in a manageable size
for dental imaging centers. You need
the same functionality of a hospitalbased
digital network, but not the
complexity or the cost. More
important, you need to capture a
variety of types of images, convert
them to digital files and organize them
for distribution to your clients. Here is a
list of Catella-LAB’s key features:
Image Gateway - Central point for the
receipt and distribution of all of your digital
images. You can connect up to 10 DICOM
compliant devices to MIDAS.
Archive - A highly redundant and safe
method for storing your images. Catella LAB
can hold the equivalent of 25,000 14”x17”
sheets of x-ray film. That's years of storage for a typical
small practice.
CD Burner - An automatic method to make CD's with
client images for distribution to patients and other medical
professionals. These CD's have an advanced viewing
program that self-starts when the CD is inserted into a PC.
Workstation - Our Catella-LAB workstation includes a
high resolution color flat panel monitor ( a medical grade
monochrome monitor is available at an additional charge).
Our diagnostic software includes all of the imaging tools you
need ( window, level, zoom, pan, annotation, measure
length, angle, Hounsfeld units, invert, rotate and more).
Backup - Choose between two methods of backing up the
same images that are stored in the Archive. You can configure
Catella-LAB with either the included removable hard drive
backup system or use our optional off-site storage center ( 6
months).
Both systems can be configured to run automatically.
Connectivity - to CR and/or DR technology.
OPTIONAL LAN Viewing -Add optional software licenses for
LAN viewing within your facility. This allows you to use existing
PC's or WIFI-enabled tablet PC's to display images in your
treatment areas and/or patient exam rooms. (This can also
support WEB distribution of images)

Who is American Medical Sales?
American Medical Sales (or “AMS”
as we are known) has just
th
celebrated its 50 year helping
dental, medical and veterinary
professionals take, develop and
view radiographs. (In the dental
field, we also have a sister company,
American Dental or “AMD”). We are
one of the largest manufacturers of
x-ray viewboxes. You may have our
products in your facility already. We
also manufacture and/or distribute
specialty x-ray machines and a wide
variety of x-ray accessories, as well
as products for darkrooms and
radiation safety.
In 1997, we began to develop a series of digital
imaging products. Today, our PACS solutions are
found in both large and small facilities. We have
networks servicing 2,500-bed hospitals, as well
as two-person specialty clinics.
Our PACS solutions are known for their intuitive
user controls and reliability. Our staff is known for
its technical expertise and its superior customer
support.
AMS will give you a helping hand.
PACS APPLIANCE & WORKSTATION
The challenge you face going digital is different
from the one faced by a dental office. You need to
organize and integrate a variety of different
imaging and data sources and produce a neat,
usable package for your referring dentists.
That’s what we do every day. We are experts in
telecommunications and networking. And we can
coordinate the capture of tracings, digital
cameras, and scheduling and billing software to
enhance and improve your workflow. As we work
together to build your imaging network, we take
on the role of senior coordinator and we are willing
and able to work with your other vendors to assure
a smooth transition.
Film vs. CR vs. DR
What does this all cost?
INTERNET
Catella-LAB can't cost an arm and a leg if it is going to
provide you a helping hand. The base price is just
$39,950. That includes all hardware and software,
pre-planning meetings and interfacing with your
modality providers. If you don't have CR or DR and
want us to provide these, we can.
Why such a low price? Because AMS has a wide
customer base to support development of these
types of products and because we write and own our
software products. Most other firms offering
products in this area are just “system integrators”
who piece together products developed by other
companies. That not only drives up prices but can
delay their ability to address customer service
issues.
Design, development, support, implementation and
equipment validation for Catella-LAB are all
performed byAMS and its authorized dealers.
What’s gained from digital...what’s the financial payback?
There are advantages for your clients and for your
practice:
Reduction in the number of images and therefore
the amount of radiation
Quicker “development” and distribution of images.
Elimination of your darkroom and the hazardous
chemicals involved in this messy process.
Reduced personnel and material costs.
Elimination of film.
Better storage and easier and faster retrieval of
client information.
Easy distribution of images within your offices, to
your patients and to referring dentists.
CR Computed Radiography systems
replace the film, intensifying screen, and
cassette used in traditional radiography
systems with an imaging plate.
Additionally, the wet film processor used
in conventional radiography is replaced
with a digital imaging reader. CR allows a
digital system to "retrofit" onto existing
radiography machines. This is a big
selling point of computed radiography
systems. What this means is that in order
to use a CR system in your practice, you
can just use the digital imaging plate
instead of your cassettes. You don't need
to purchase a new x-ray machine but
your CR or DR system must be DICOM
compliant to function with a PACS.
DR Direct Radiography is a method of
digital radiography where the conventional
radiographic cassette and film are replaced
with a digital imaging sensor. This imaging
sensor is either permanently affixed to an x-
ray table or attached to the DR computer by
a wire. Currently there are no viable
wireless systems that we are aware of. In
stationary DR systems, the imaging sensor
is attached to the x-ray table.
i May range from $20,000-50,000. The unit currently recommended by AMS costs
$47,000 retail.
ii Based on a 600 square foot darkroom.
iii Estimated rent of $12.00 per square foot per year. This varies based on local conditions.
iv Based on 500 patients per month. Studies indicate film, chemistry, equipment
maintenance and personnel costs range $3.50 and higher per image shot. Our estimate,
based on talking to several lab owners, is that the package of films, photos, and tracings
costs a lab $10.00 to $15.00 per patient. We used $10.00 per package for our estimate.
v This assumes you are burning CD’s with all the information. When you move to delivering
These image sets via the Internet, the savings soar.
