The past fiscal year will be remembered by many for the changes 

wrought on the nation’s economy. Difficult financial times wreaked 

havoc, forcing budget cuts and belt-tightening among businesses, 

schools, homes and families across the country. Remarkably enough, 

amid the economic turmoil, the Wayne State Foundation received a record 

number of contributions. 

This year was not the first time Wayne State’s alumni and friends rallied 

to support the college during a period of uncertainty. And I am confident 

after visiting with many of you at reunions around the country and here 

at the college for homecoming and other special events that it will not be 

the last. 

The bond formed between the college and its students, staff, faculty 

and alumni, many of you have told me, runs as strong as any family 

connection. I take great pride in your connection to your alma mater and 

in my responsibility as steward of Wayne State. We here at the college 

have worked hard this past year to continue the traditions of excellence 

started so many years ago at Wayne State. Faculty, student and alumni 

accomplishments, such as those below, demonstrate our ongoing 

commitment to the mission of teaching and learning. 

Wayne State’s Department of Music and the Department of Art and Design 

became accredited institutional members of the National Association of 

Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Association of Schools of Art 

and Design (NASAD), respectively, during the 2008-09 academic year. 

As the only organizations recognized by the United States Department of 

Education as accreditors for Art and Music programs, NASM and NASAD 

have developed reputations for rigor. Less than 15% of arts units in the 

nation hold accreditation from NASAD or NASM. 

In addition to assuring the rigor of its programs, the college successfully 

received renewed funding by the National Institute of Health for an 

ongoing grant under the name of INBRE (IDeA Networks of Biomedical 

Research Excellence). The renewal phase will allow expansion of faculty 

and the purchase of expensive cutting-edge biomedical research 

equipment and supplies that can be utilized daily in teaching. 

Our students continued to shine on state and national stages. Wayne 

State media students earned awards April 4 at the Nebraska Collegiate 

Media Association (NCMA) meeting in the Student Center on campus. 

The Wayne Stater was named 2009 Newspaper of the Year. This was last 

awarded to the newspaper in 2006. The school TV and radio stations 

each earned second places in Overall Excellence in NCMA’s Golden Leaf 

Awards. WSC competed against Chadron State College, Hastings College, 

Northeast Community College, Concordia University, Western Nebraska 

Community College, Midland Lutheran College and Doane College. 

Wayne State College students won the American College of Sports Medicine 

(ACSM) Student Bowl Championship at the 56th annual ACSM meeting May 

27-30 in Seattle, Wash. Kelly Brink, Peter Ray, and Darren Richter, Wayne 

State College students from the Department of Health, Human Performance, 

and Sport majoring in Exercise Science, made up the team, which competed 

in a Jeopardy ACSM style contest against six other teams from schools 

throughout the United States that won regional chapter competitions. 

Wayne State faculty members continue to demonstrate their leadership 

and scholarship. Dr. Patricia Arneson, professor of business at Wayne State 

College, participated in the 20th anniversary of the Oxford Round Table, held 

July 5-10 at Oxford University in Oxford, England. Arneson was one of 40 

international scholars invited to attend as a discussant and/or presenter. 

Dr. Andrew Alexander, professor of English and philosophy at Wayne State 

College, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Humanities 

Council. The Nebraska Humanities Council serves thousands of people in 

communities across the state through a variety of annual programming. 

At Wayne State College, Alexander teaches a variety of courses on British 

literature, composition, logic, and ethics. 

Dr. Randy Bertolas, chair of the Department of History, Politics, and 

Geography and professor of geography at Wayne State College, was 

recently elected to the National Executive Committee of Gamma Theta 

Upsilon. Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) is the international honor society in 

geography, established in 1928 and today serving 300 chapters throughout 

the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Bertolas chartered the Lambda Zeta chapter 

of GTU at Wayne State College in 2002. 

Susan and George Menking received the Alumni Achievement Award at 

the Dec. 19 commencement ceremony. Susan graduated from Wayne State 

College in 1955 with a major in English and minors in art and music. 

George received his B.A. from Wayne State in 1956 with majors in math and 

science. 

Don and Carol Bremer were the recipients of this year’s Alumni Achievement 

Award presented at the May commencement ceremony. Don earned his 

bachelor’s degree from Wayne State in 1958, majoring in education and 

industrial arts. Carol graduated from Wayne State in 1954 with her two-year 

teaching credential.

The college opened the A. Jewell Schock Museum of Natural 

History on Oct. 28, 2008, in the Carhart Science Building. 

The museum houses more than 15,000 specimens of birds, 

mammals, invertebrates, plants, and fossils. The museum 

was created by Jewel Schock, former zoologist at Wayne State 

College. He collected and prepared specimens from Northeast 

Nebraska during the course of 30 years. Schock was assisted by 

numerous students and used the collections to aid in teaching 

and science education and outreach. 

Northeast Community College and Wayne State College broke 

ground for their history-making facility in South Sioux City 

on July 9. The College Center of South Sioux City will partner 

Northeast Community College and Wayne State College in the 

same building. Northeast and Wayne State will offer additional 

opportunities for students to earn associate, baccalaureate, 

and master’s degrees without having to relocate, a combination 

of customized training for businesses and industry, continuing 

education, licensing programs, and career and technical 

training. Construction on the approximately 39,600-square-foot 

facility should substantially be completed in December 2010. 

The college also expanded its study abroad opportunities, 

sending three students to Taiwan from Feb. 21 to June 20 and 

18 WSC students to Greece from March 15 to May 29. The 

students in Taiwan studied at Chienkuo Technology University in 

Changhua City, taking courses in Chinese language and culture, 

assisting in English as Foreign Language classes, and studying 

Intercultural Communication and the International Experience. 

The students who went to Greece studied at Thessaly University 

in Volos, taking a course in International Study and completing 

a special project for 12 earned credit hours. Additional field 

trips included Athens, Thessaloniki, Meteora, Istanbul, various 

islands and regional sites. They were accompanied by WSC 

Professors Gerald Conway and Kathy Conway. 

Your support helps make these achievements possible. Gifts 

from alumni and friends provide scholarships, funds for 

professional development and the money needed to carry out

ON THE COVER: The campus commons project, which was completed this 

summer, replaced a street that ran through the core of the Wayne State campus 

with a pedestrian walkway bordered by native plants and trees. The commons 

area runs from the west end of campus beginning at the roundabout on J.G.W. 

Lewis Drive to the east side of campus terminating at Schreiner Drive.

During the past fiscal year, the Wayne State 

Foundation weathered the financial crisis and 

the economic challenges facing the nation with 

minimal damage to its investments and with 

increased revenue from contributions. Your 

support has kept the foundation strong and 

given it the ability to continue its mission to 

contribute to the growth and development of 


And contribute it did! The foundation distributed 

during the fiscal year a record $1.8 million 

to Wayne State College for academic and 

institutional support; facilities and equipment; 

and scholarships and grants. Scholarships 

continue to be a priority for the foundation, 

and it awarded $1.08 million in scholarships 

for the fiscal year. However, the endowment 

distributions, for the 2009-2010 fiscal year, 

have been reduced substantially because of 

unrealized market losses on the endowment. 

The foundation received endowment contributions of $960,000, but because of unrealized 

market losses, the endowment values dropped by 14% to $9.7 million. The investments of 

the foundation dropped a total of 21%. Subsequent to the June 30 year end, the market has 

recovered some of those losses. 

In August 2008, the foundation launched the public phase of the Centennial Campaign 

Remembering the Past ~ Investing in the Future, a $20-million effort. The initiatives of the 

campaign include: the renovation of Carhart Science Building, developing a Commons in the 

heart of campus, growing scholarships, building endowments for each of the four schools, 

unrestricted gifts to the general fund and other restricted gifts. The funds for the campaign 

stand at $17.8 million. 

I feel optimistic about the future performance of the Wayne State Foundation and its ability to 

accomplish its mission because you have demonstrated your commitment to keep it strong… 

to keep it working for the college. The trustees listed on page 35, have made the same 

commitment. On behalf of all of the trustees of the Wayne State Foundation, thank you for

It has been so exciting to see our Centennial Campaign advance to the public phase this year. It has taken time 

and dedication to get to this point, but your gifts have brought us here. Thank you. 

Discussions began in 2003 about serious facility deficiencies, campus grounds issues, student scholarship 

needs, and other important initiatives that only a capital campaign could help address. The Wayne State 

Foundation Board of Trustees at its October 2003 annual meeting unanimously voted to move forward with the 

campaign planning but recognized that it would need the support and active involvement of the president of 


When Dr. Richard Collings accepted the position as president and arrived in June 2004, the planning for the 

campaign quickly moved into action by pulling together representatives from the college faculty, staff, athletics 

and administration along with foundation trustees to reach a consensus on funding priorities. Once in place, 

the silent phase of the Centennial Campaign Remembering the Past ~ Investing in the Future began. With 75 

percent of the $20 million goal in place and confidence in our ability to succeed, the campaign moved into the 

public phase in August 2008. Now, with just a year to go, we have almost 90% in place. The campaign will 

close in September 2010 when Wayne State College will celebrate its 100 year anniversary as a state college. 

Although, the last lap is frequently the most challenging, you have made us confident by your continued 

support. Please visit www.wsc.edu under foundation to find out more about the Centennial Campaign. 

A campaign is a mechanism to communicate with 

prospective donors to let them know how they can have a 

targeted impact. Thank you for listening. And please know 

that all gifts make a significant difference. The unrestricted 

gifts contributed through the phonathon have allowed the 

foundation to multiply their impact through the campaign. 

Major campaign gifts have helped fund, for example, the 

renovation of Carhart Science Building, the creation of the 

Commons and other restricted gifts. Other major campaign 

gifts have created new endowed scholarship funds along 

with funding for annual scholarships. 

Your gifts allowed the Wayne State Foundation to distribute a 

record number of student scholarships during the fiscal year, 

an increase of 24 percent. In addition, the total distributions 

to Wayne State College increased by 52 percent, and included 

academic and institutional support, facilities, equipment 

and scholarships. This would not have been possible without 

everyone’s gift, both large and small…all gifts matter!

The Circle of Excellence is the highest recognition given to donors for their contributions during the year. It is reserved for alumni, 

friends and businesses who contributed $100,000 or more during the reporting period of this Honor Roll of Donors. 

Members of the Circle of Excellence receive all of the benefits and privileges of belonging to the Presidents Society. Upon initial entry 

into the Circle, they receive special recognition in the Honor Roll of Donors. 

Sonna Holmes left 196 acres of farmland in her will for Wayne State 

College. Her wish was for the Wayne State Foundation to sell the 

property and establish a scholarship in her mother’s memory. The 

Donna Sonner Holmes Endowed Scholarship is awarded to elementary 

and secondary education majors. Sonna has honored her mother with 

this endowed scholarship and created a lasting legacy. 

Sonna’s mother, Donna, attended Wayne State for two years after 

graduation from Wayne High School. She graduated from UCLA with a 

bachelor of arts degree in 1927 and began a teaching career. She was 

employed by the Grand Island Public Schools until her retirement. 

Dolores Troup left 50 percent of her estate to benefit Wayne State 

College’s campus beautification efforts. Her gift was used to complete 

the campus commons project. 

Dolores graduated from Wayne State College in 1939. In a letter to 

the college president in 1976, she wrote that “the years spent on 

your campus were the happiest of my life.” She added that she hoped 

her gift would allow the beauty of campus to continue to serve as an 

inspiration to many young people. 

Dolores lived in Earlham, Iowa. She was born March 16, 1910, and died 

Dec. 2, 2007. 

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation provides scholarships for 

tuition and fees up to $3,200 per semester and a textbook allowance 

of $400 per semester for undergraduate students attending Nebraska 

public universities, colleges, or community colleges. These funds are 

available to the extent that tuition, fees and books are not already 

covered by other grants or scholarships. 

The foundation expanded the scholarship program for the 2007-2008 

academic year, which pushed the number of Wayne State College 

students benefiting from the foundation’s funds from 24 students in 

2006-2007, to 43 in 2007-2008, and 76 in 2008-2009. 

Wayne State is grateful to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation for 

its commitment to providing access to education at Nebraska’s public 

colleges and universities.

The Charles B. Griffin and Florence Kindler Griffin Endowed Scholarship 

was established in 1993 by Florence and Bud to provide assistance 

to business majors at Wayne State College. Bud passed away in 

1994. Florence continues to contribute generously to their endowed 

scholarship. She has always been a strong supporter of Wayne State 

and received the 2002 Alumni Service Award. 

Florence taught high school in Creighton, Neb., after graduating from 

Wayne State in 1942 and married Charles B. “Bud” Griffin in 1943. 

The next year, she taught high school in Clarksville, Texas, and then 

took a position as an accountant for the Rid River Army Depot (RRAD). 

She held a number of positions with RRAD but concluded a 26-year 

career as a management analyst and developed emergency plans for 

any contingency, such as war, riots and natural disasters. Since her 

retirement in 1970, Florence has traveled extensively and continues to 

enjoy traveling. 

The trustees of the Gardner Foundation of Wakefield, Neb., include 

Jeanne M. Gardner, David J. Gardner, Kirk N. Gardner and Leslie A. 

(Gardner) Bebee. Founder Daniel W. Gardner died in January 2001. 

The Gardner Foundation has played a major role in every fundraising 

initiative launched by Wayne State College and is a vital partner in the 

success of the foundation and the college as it moves forward to fulfill 

its mission of excellence in teaching and learning and regional service 

and development. It is with a profound sense of gratitude that we 

recognize the Gardner family in this Honor Roll of Donors.

Scholarships are of vital importance to our students, and we appreciate the support of those 

who provided leadership in establishing these new scholarships. Additional contributions to 

new or existing scholarships are welcome and encouraged. 

Although a gift of any size may be designated for scholarships, a minimum principal balance of 

$10,000 is required for a named endowed scholarship although it can be funded over a five-year 

period. A named annual scholarship requires a gift of at least $500. If you would like to discuss

2009 Phonathon Review 

Last winter more than 50 energetic and articulate Wayne State College students gathered in 

the basement of the Hahn Building to serve as ambassadors of the Wayne State Foundation and 

Alumni office. Accepting the challenge to contact more than 24,000 WSC alumni and friends to 

update addresses, raise unrestricted support for the college’s priorities and to share information 

about the campus, these students were busy. 

This ambitious calling program is maintained with the leadership of four student managers 

and foundation and alumni staff. The students gathered nightly from Sunday through Thursday 

during January, February and March to accomplish this goal. Last year’s phonathon raised 

$187,750 in gifts and pledges from alumni and friends. 

Without your financial support, in any amount, we could not accomplish our goals to 

provide support for academic and athletic scholarships; programs and special campus projects; 

promote faculty and staff development and supply resources for publications, keeping WSC a 

vital, stimulating and exciting place. Your gifts are increasingly important, as state funding 

declines due to these economic times. The percentage of alumni giving is viewed as a measure of 

educational satisfaction and it is one of the determining factors when we apply for grants for the 

college. 

In January, February or March, an energetic and hopeful student caller will be dialing your 

telephone number to update your address and to ask for your tax-deductible contribution to support 

many worthy programs. Please consider thoughtfully the positive impact you can have upon the

Cornerstone Society

The Cornerstone Society was established in 1998 to 

recognize cumulative contributions to the Wayne State 

Foundation of $10,000 and above. It honors donors for 

their loyal and continuous support with a major recognition 

wall in the student center atrium. It states: “With each 

gift comes an ever-growing bond with the college, faculty 

and students and the knowledge that your generosity is 

significantly impacting Wayne State College.”
