Wayne State Expands Learning Community Format Wayne State extended its highly successful learning community format to Grand Island for the fall 2007 semester, expanding the college’s innovative Masters of Science in Education: Curriculum and Instruction program to the western edge of its 46-county service area. The newest learning community site, Grand Island, joins the Blair, Fremont, Neligh, Norfolk, Sioux City and South Sioux City communities in attracting education professionals from all over Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota for the most innovative masters program in the college’s region. Wayne State began its learning community format in 2003 in Fremont and Sioux City/South Sioux City. From an initial group of 127 students, the program has grown to more than 640 students who have completed or are currently completing requirements for the program. Retention until graduation is more than 95 percent, eclipsing national masters in education program completion rates, which range from 38 percent to 83 percent. Schroeder Collects First-Ever All-American Volleyball Honor Emily Schroeder of Wayne State College became the school's first-ever All-American in volleyball during the 2006 season, earning Second Team All-American honors by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and Daktronics. Schroeder set a single season record in 2006 with 599 kills, an average of 4.47 kills per game to rank third in the NSIC and 25th in NCAA Division II. She led the NSIC in blocking at 1.54 bpg, which ranked 4th in NCAA Division II. During the 2006 season, Schroeder was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week twice and was selected the Nebraska NCAA Division II Player of the Week five times. Emily Schroeder Other honors for the 2006 season for Schroeder included NSIC All- Academic Team, ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Second Team, Daktronics All-North Central Region First Team, Northern Sun Conference First Team, AVCA All-North Central Region First Team and captain of the Omaha World Herald All-Nebraska Division II Volleyball Team. Women Capture First NSIC Cross Country Championship Wayne State College won its first Northern Sun Conference women's cross country championship Oct. 21, 2006, in St. Paul, Minn., as the Wildcats outscored the University of Mary 36-49 for the team title. Three Wildcat runners placed in the top 10 to earn All-Conference honors. Megan Zavorka of Torrington, Wyo., placed second overall with a time of 23:30 on the 6,000-meter course. Melissa Schmit of Randolph came in third at 24:07 and Sarah Thomsen of Wahoo finished eighth in 24:48. WSC head coach Marlon Brink was named the NSIC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for leading the Wildcats to the team title. “Our team ran up to its potential,” Brink said. “We peaked at the right time and having three All- Conference finishers was exciting. The team reached its goal of winning the conference championship. Dr. Todd Farmer and Wayne State students Conner Bramlet (Physical Education), Nick Jarosh (Sport Management), and Michaela Hegarty (Exercise Science) attended the 110 Year Nebraska Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NAHPERD) Gala Celebration on Oct. 27 in Lincoln. Each of the students was honored by WSC faculty as the “Major of the Year” in their disciplines. Health, Human Performance and Sports Honors Three Students The Department of Health, Human Performance, and Sports (HHPS) at Wayne State College selected Connor Bramlet of West Point, Michaela Hegarty of Fremont and Nick Jarosh of Ankeny, Iowa, as "Major of the Year'' award winners this fall semester. The Nebraska Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NAHPERD) honored the three for excellence in physical education, exercise science and sport management during its 110-year gala celebration Oct. 27 in Lincoln. Bramlet, formerly of Wheatland, Wyo., is a senior physical education major with a coaching endorsement. Bramlet participates in baseball. He has been named as an Academic All Conference (NSIC) and All Conference (NSIC) student. His name appears on the dean’s list for academic achievement. He is a recipient of the Pete Chapman Scholarship at WSC. His wife is Allison Bramlet. Hegarty is an exercise science major with a coaching endorsement. She is the daughter of Patrick and Lana Hegarty and Renee Kassmeier. Hegarty has been listed on the dean's list for academic achievement. Jarosh is a sport management major with a minor in business administration. He is the son of Randal and Lisa Jarosh. He has been listed on the dean's list for academic achievement. Phi Beta Lambda Student Places in Computer Competition Adam Krause of Peru placed tenth in computer applications at the 2007 Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference in Chicago. Krause is Phi Beta Lambda chapter president at Wayne State and a vice president of finance for Phi Beta Lambda at the state level. Phi Beta Lambda is a state and national business association. 17
