i<br />

feel <strong>in</strong> many ways that I’m part of <strong>the</strong><br />

‘lucky’ generation when it comes to <strong>sexual</strong><br />

politics. My mum went out to work but<br />

she didn’t exactly burn her bra; I simply grew<br />

up surrounded by <strong>the</strong> belief that my worth<br />

was based on who I was, my talents and what<br />

I did with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

I was aware of <strong>the</strong> <strong>media</strong>, of course, but even<br />

though it feels like yesterday, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternet didn’t<br />

even exist, teenage magaz<strong>in</strong>es were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>nocent <strong>in</strong>fancy and sex was a really big deal.<br />

We had our own version of <strong>the</strong> pressures all<br />

teenagers face – discover<strong>in</strong>g our emerg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

selves while want<strong>in</strong>g to be liked, to be clever<br />

and to be popular, if at all possible – but I feel<br />

we had just that bit more time and space <strong>in</strong><br />

which to f<strong>in</strong>d out who we were.<br />

When I was asked by <strong>the</strong> Government to<br />

look at <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>sexual</strong>isation<br />

and grow<strong>in</strong>g violence towards women, I truly<br />

wasn’t prepared for what I would f<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Why did it feel like we had taken so many<br />

steps backward <strong>in</strong> terms of <strong>sexual</strong> equality<br />

among young people and healthy <strong>sexual</strong>ity?<br />

How had rape scenes become a normal part<br />

of video war games? Why were so many<br />

girls hav<strong>in</strong>g breast enlargement surgery as<br />

teenagers and what possessed a girl to sell<br />

her virg<strong>in</strong>ity on eBay? Were teenagers just<br />

different today and grow<strong>in</strong>g up more quickly<br />

or was someth<strong>in</strong>g else go<strong>in</strong>g on?<br />

what is ‘<strong>sexual</strong>isation’?<br />

Many of us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘lucky’ generation are<br />

now parents and it feels like we’re just<br />

now start<strong>in</strong>g to wake up to what is go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on with our children and <strong>the</strong> impact of<br />

premature <strong>sexual</strong>isation.<br />

Simply put, <strong>sexual</strong>isation is <strong>the</strong> imposition<br />

of adult <strong>sexual</strong>ity on to children and young<br />

people before <strong>the</strong>y are capable of deal<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with it mentally, emotionally or physically.<br />

While girls are valu<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>in</strong><br />

terms of how <strong>sexual</strong>ly desirable <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

to boys, boys are feel<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pressure to be<br />

hyper mascul<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

“<strong>the</strong>re is a grow<strong>in</strong>g body of<br />

evidence that suggests that<br />

<strong>sexual</strong>isation is hav<strong>in</strong>g a profound<br />

impact on our children’s<br />

emotional development<br />

and how <strong>the</strong>y develop <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sense of identity.”<br />

Kids are learn<strong>in</strong>g how to have sex from<br />

pornography and we live <strong>in</strong> a world that is<br />

more saturated by <strong>images</strong> than at any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

time <strong>in</strong> our modern history.<br />

Beh<strong>in</strong>d every image lies a message about<br />

expectations, values and ideals. Right now,<br />

those <strong>images</strong> more often than not present and<br />

perpetuate a world where women are revered<br />

and rewarded for <strong>the</strong>ir physical attributes.<br />

Gender stereotypes are back <strong>in</strong> fashion and<br />

to object is often to be accused of lack<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

sense of humour or proportion.<br />

There is a grow<strong>in</strong>g body of evidence that<br />

suggests that <strong>sexual</strong>isation is hav<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

profound impact on our children’s emotional<br />

development and how <strong>the</strong>y develop <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sense of identity. Young people have a<br />

natural, healthy <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> sex. But when <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>sexual</strong>ity is moulded to fit adult<br />

stereotypes, this can compromise that healthy<br />

developmental process.<br />

Children no longer have <strong>the</strong> time and space<br />

to extend <strong>the</strong>ir own understand<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>images</strong><br />

and constructs are literally ‘<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir face’ on a<br />

daily basis, often before <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds are ready<br />

to know how to <strong>in</strong>terpret or process <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Instead of putt<strong>in</strong>g children <strong>in</strong> control of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>sexual</strong>ity, we are <strong>in</strong> danger of isolat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

from it altoge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

what are <strong>the</strong> consequences?<br />

The serious negative consequences<br />

associated with <strong>the</strong> <strong>sexual</strong>isation of children<br />

is becom<strong>in</strong>g ever more clear <strong>in</strong> areas of body<br />

confidence, ambitions, low self-esteem, <strong>sexual</strong><br />

harassment, abuse with<strong>in</strong> teen relationships<br />

and views on <strong>sexual</strong> violence.<br />

A study <strong>in</strong> America found a direct correlation<br />

between children’s exposure to <strong>sexual</strong> content<br />

on television and teen pregnancy rates.<br />

The World Health Organization estimates<br />

that 20% of girls and 11% of boys <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK<br />

have been <strong>sexual</strong>ly assaulted. Homophobia<br />

is still a significant problem with<strong>in</strong> schools.<br />

These are <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>ds of consequences that<br />

leave long-term effects, often resurfac<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

vulnerable times dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir adult life, affect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

careers, relationships and, <strong>in</strong> turn, how <strong>the</strong>y<br />

parent <strong>the</strong>ir own children.<br />

what can we do to help<br />

young people?<br />

It’s unrealistic to assume that we can<br />

stop our children and young people from<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g exposed to unhealthy <strong>images</strong> but<br />

we can give <strong>the</strong>m tools to navigate <strong>the</strong><br />

world around <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

From digital citizenship to <strong>media</strong> literacy,<br />

equipp<strong>in</strong>g kids with tools to help <strong>the</strong>m<br />

understand and <strong>in</strong>terpret what <strong>the</strong>y see<br />

without <strong>in</strong>ternalis<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> negative messages<br />

can help <strong>the</strong>m build <strong>the</strong>ir self-esteem and<br />

<strong>in</strong>ner confidence so <strong>the</strong>y feel secure <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own identity. Just as <strong>the</strong>y are taught read<strong>in</strong>g<br />

comprehension and, later, literary criticism,<br />

children can be taught how to critique <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>media</strong> <strong>the</strong>y consume.<br />

We may th<strong>in</strong>k our children are highly<br />

literate when it comes to <strong>media</strong> but it’s just<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y know how to work it, not how to<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpret it. Where <strong>the</strong>se classes are already<br />

happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> schools, <strong>the</strong> children are tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to it with relish and <strong>the</strong>n start<strong>in</strong>g to create<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own forms of <strong>media</strong> and expression<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r than simply sitt<strong>in</strong>g back and lett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it all come to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

With encouragement and guidance,<br />

children are <strong>in</strong>credibly creative and have<br />

<strong>the</strong> potential for amaz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ner strength,<br />

resilience and <strong>in</strong>dividual thought.<br />
