COMO <strong>VIBE</strong> NEWSLETTER STUDENT Services YEAR 8 Semester 1 is now complete with Semester 2 well and truly underway. There were many successes and acknowledgements made at the end of semester assembly with just a few detailed below: 100% ATTENDANCE Congratulations to the following who managed to maintain good health and well-being and attend school every day for Semester. They were: Azzedine Amani, Liam Blackwell, Claire Boys, Tristan Burns, Tilan Dharmadasa, Zach Elliott, Dane Gavranich, Zoe Hopkinson, Duangkamon Jittimanee, Jaehee Lee, Camryn Pow, Shefale Rishi, Shane van Bueren, Jye Vlok, Bryan Wong and Lingyun Zhao. CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE Based on the following criteria, 21 students achieved these certificates; achievement of a grade average above 4.35 (A – 5, B - 4, C – 3, D - 2, E – 1) with at least half of the final grades being an ‘A’. These criteria are used throughout years 8, 9 and 10 and provide a benchmark to aspire to. They were: Riley Banks, Najwa Mohd Rosdi Naim, Irshan Basrewan, Jessica Leng, Changzheng Li, Alia Safari, Claire Boys, Isabella Finney, Audrey Kristina, Charlie Meynell, Mahan Tokhmehchi, Shane van Bueren, Liam Blackwell, Lauren Cope, Ethan Sheehy, Kanon Uchiyama, Eyasu Tesfaye, Danica Zekulich, Azzedine Amani, Lingyun Zhao and Linda Diep. Congratulations on achieving this very high standard which I hope can be maintained throughout the rest of the year at least! GENERAL CLASSROOM CERTIFICATES Also acknowledged at the assembly were 108 classroom academic success and general certificates. These are selected by classroom teachers and cover many levels of ‘success’ such as attitude, fantastic consistent effort, being at the ‘top of the class’, wonderful improvement and so on. Congratulations to all students who have given their best throughout the semester. I hope you can all maintain your personal bests for the rest of this year and beyond! SOCIAL NETWORKING The use of social networks was a topic for discussion at the assembly too. This focused on privacy settings in Facebook as well as the appropriate use of sites such as Tumblr and Ask.fm. Of considerable concern are the final two sites named as they are popular due to their anonymity. I unfortunately see students too often who have had comments posted telling them to kill themselves, sexual remarks and other such distasteful and hurtful comments. I remind families to share information at home and work together to resolve these issues. GENERAL There were also many successes from events such as the Swimming Carnival earlier in the year and the more recent Athletics Carnival. Later this semester selected students will compete in the Interschool Athletics Carnival at the State Athletics Stadium. Good luck to all of those students. There were many terrific results from within the EMITS, Hockey, Golf and Music special programs which are achieved through hard work and dedication. Congratulations to all of those students. A survey was completed by all Year 8s near the end of Term Two reviewing the year so far with the results on the whole being fantastic and a credit to the entire school community. Some comments include ‘I love all of the subjects because the teachers are all nice at Como. I love it here’, ‘that everybody in Year 7 should come to Como because they will feel very safe here’ and finally ‘Como is a great experience and don’t be nervous – it will be really fun’. Peter Schmidt Student Services/Year 8 Coordinator YEAR 9 Welcome back to Term 3! The Year 9 assembly was a grand affair with a multitude of certificates given to a large number of students celebrating individual subject achievement, general academic excellence and attendance. Congratulations must go to all the Year 9 students who received an award. There was an amazing 25 students who achieved an Academic Excellence Award. Two students, Sandra Goh and Monica Whitford received a perfect grade point average. Students need to ensure they are studying hard and to know their results from lower school influence the subjects they can choose in Upper School. Often students are disappointed as they do not have the required background to choose subjects they require for study beyond school. 4 C A R E E N Q U I R Y E M P O W E R M E N T
Term 3 has seen WAMSE testing completed and will continue to be busy as there are a variety of events students can participate in, including the Lightning Carnival, “Como’s Got Talent” and the YEAR 10 Academic Award Winners Emma Schofield, Shakila Hassani, Nafisa Nishandar, Sasha Rahavi, James Anderson, Olivia Merin Thomas, Andrew Vaitekenas, Amanda Drew, Fadilah Fatchuddin, Christine Jonathan, Kathleen Steadman, Callum Stewart, Daniel Berber, Yechan Jo, Marita Luckly, Katherine Wilson and Jesse Ryan. YEAR 11 ROTARY YOUTH DRIVER AWARENESS PROGRAM This award winning program aims at reducing the risks for that dangerous time after young drivers first gain their “P” Plates. Six workshops are conducted to raise awareness of drivers and passengers. Sessions cover topics such as stopping distances, drug and alcohol consequences, crash impacts at different speeds, how to be a “good” passenger/friend in dangerous circumstances etc. Parent permission forms were distributed at an assembly this week and students were urged to attend and listen, learn and enjoy being with their friends. Most students have paid the $20 charge as part of their school fees. Lunch will be provided. Students will not be allowed to leave the Rec Centre YEAR 12 Leaver or Graduate? As I write this, Year 12s have around five and a half weeks until they finish their academic year. Only exams for the ATAR students, a bit of revision time and time to complete the odd assessment remain after that. It’s not much time to ensure that you are a graduate and not just a leaver. Remember that to graduate, you need to meet the English standard (a few still have not done that), to complete 20 units and to have a C average over your best 16 units. If you are in danger of not meeting any ever popular Healthy Choices Week. Year 9 can be a challenging year and if your son/daughter is experiencing difficulties please do not hesitate to contact me. You’ll need to complete an application and have some of your teachers provide us with information to use in the reference. Kerry Martin Community Nurse - Schools The ViPAs The Visual and Performing Arts Department announces ‘The ViPA’s’, its annual awards for excellence in the Arts. Students are invited to present original works for judging in the areas of Music, Media, Drama, Dance, Visual Art and Photography. Awards will be presented to winning entries in each category and the winners will be presented for judging for the grand ‘ViPA’ Award which will bew presented at the final assembly for term 3. A unique judging pannel will judge the event. Entries must be original. The form of the entry will vary according to which Arts area the work represents. In Music the prize will be awarded for an original piece of music. In Media the prize will be awarded for an original audio and/ or visual short presentation or an original script. In Drama the prize will be awarded for an original short script which which the presenter will perform. In Visual Art the prize will be awarded for an original artwork in any medium or media. In Photography the prize will be awarded for an original photograph in any medium. All entries must be presented to an Arts teacher from any of the above areas.
