MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of Coalition for the Homeless
of Central Florida is to transform the lives
of homeless men, women and children
by providing crucial services
to end their crisis of homelessness.

DEAR FRIENDS:
With the region’s economy still stagnant, close to 4,000 homeless
individuals made their way to Coalition for the Homeless of Central
Florida during FY 2010-2011. On an average night, we helped
nearly 700 individuals, about 215 of whom were children with an
average age of eight. Thankfully, the community continued to invest
in our nonprofit organization, enabling us to provide them a step up
to a better life through our programs and services.
In addition to the hundreds of single adults who
sought food, shelter and guidance on the road
to self-sufficiency, this year’s clients included
457 families with 839 children. An increase of
83 families served over last year, these mothers,
fathers and youngsters were a stark reminder
of the reality of homelessness in our midst.
Viewing the numbers in a more positive manner,
however, reflects the Coalition’s ability to move
families more quickly into their own residences
through our community housing program.
This year, our wonderful supporters provided
close to $1.7M in goods and professional
services, without which we could not have
operated. Over 17,000 of you volunteered
nearly 73,000 hours of your time to help
serve almost 300,000 meals and complete
a multitude of projects on the Coalition’s campuses. To express our
gratitude, we held the first annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic
in October 2010 and a good time was had by all.
During FY 2010-2011, we continued to move forward on plans for
our new Men’s Service Center (MSC). With last year’s progress on
the facility design by Baker Barrios Architects, Inc., this year the
Tri-Party Agreement between Orange County Government, the City
of Orlando and the Coalition was signed. Powell Design Group
completed the MSC final design in February 2011. The permitting
stage was completed just into the new fiscal year, a bid solicitation
was issued, bids were opened in mid-September 2011 and a
contractor was selected. We are embarking on a much-anticipated
ground-breaking in February 2012 and remain indebted to Coalition
Board member Glenn Fournier for the hundreds of hours he has
continued to give to guiding this dream to reality.
We were challenged this year with the need to relocate some of our
children’s services, including the onsite Boys & Girls Club, which was
housed in the portables to be removed for MSC construction.
The Universal Orlando Foundation, Walt Disney World Resort,
Lincoln Properties, a team of generous sub-contractors led
by Interstruct Inc., and several others came together to transform
our storage building into the perfect solution. In May 2011,
the Children’s Enrichment Center opened, providing a sparkling new
home for the Club and a host of other activities for our kids.
This year, we continued the monthly “More than a Meal” tours to
provide visitors a firsthand look at the Coalition’s many programs
and services. We also held the 18th Annual Hearts of Gold and
15th Annual Doug Spencer Golf Challenge, sponsored the 20th
Annual Empty Bowls Luncheon, held our first-ever Journey Home
Breakfast, and established The Journey Home Giving Society.
Proudly, our social media following continued to grow and, just into
the new fiscal year, we boldly transformed the Coalition’s Mission
Statement to more succinctly state our agency’s purpose.
We have chosen to list our FY 2010-2011 financial supporters on
special pages in this report. However, we must give particular
mention here to the Walmart Foundation for their $45,000 grant and
Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation for their $30,000 grant, both of
which helped to fund our Meal Service Program; and to Walt Disney
World Resort for again honoring us with a $60,000 “Helping Kids
Shine” grant.
The Coalition’s Board and staff remain committed to helping
homeless men, women and families regain their independence,
and grateful to the Central Florida community for supporting
our endeavors. You enable us to put Our Mission in Motion.

Staff support is on-site around the clock, 365 days a year. Those on the front lines, such as the intake and case
managers, resident assistants, receptionists, children’s services providers, victims’ advocates, and program
administrators, work tirelessly with clients on a daily basis to guide them toward independence. The kitchen
and facility maintenance staffs are indispensible to the organization’s ability to provide meals and safe shelter
to hundreds of people each day.
Integral to the front line staff’s ability to assist clients are the handful dedicated to managing volunteer and in-kind
services, raising monies, communicating the Coalition’s message of hope throughout the community, managing the
organization’s finances and human resources, and handling agency administration.

The Coalition aims to transform lives by providing crucial services
to end the crisis of homelessness. Those services are provided
by dedicated staff and partner organizations through a variety
of programs for men, women and families with children on our
two campuses.
Center For Women And Families
Located on the main campus, the Center for Women and Families
(CWF) is an emergency shelter program for single women, mothers
with children, fathers with children, and intact families. The facility,
which accommodates up to 240 individuals, enables families to stay
together during a trying time in their lives. Case managers design
self-sufficiency plans with all adult residents, which include education,
employment, counseling, life skills training, budgeting, and a savings
account. Ten beds are dedicated to participants in the First Steps
Shelter Recovery Program for Women.
� During the year, this case-managed program served 1,114 clients,
almost 40 percent of whom were children in 255 separate families.
� CWF residents immersed in their case-managed plans stayed
an average of 5½ months, which was slightly longer than last year.
� 17 percent of clients were single dads with kids, a slight increase
over last year’s 16 percent.
� Of those who were homeless for the first time, 87 percent were
parents with children.
CWF residents continued to benefit from unique offerings
and life-skills seminars as well as the onsite services provided
by Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) LifeStrides Program,
Goodwill Industries, Lakeside Behavioral Healthcare and the
Downtown Boys & Girls Club, which was relocated into our
refurbished Children’s Enrichment Center. As in previous years,
other services included legal assistance provided by Florida A & M
University; free tax preparation help through Heart of Florida United
Way; parent and child education seminars by Arnold Palmer Hospital
“In the Zone” pediatric residents; and student tutoring through the
OCPS Title I Program.
Special treats this year included the First Annual Back to School
Festival; Family Clay Day by Catherine Cross; a Fall Festival hosted
by Valencia Community College; a Spring Fling Carnival courtesy of
Valencia and Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor and Reed; a Bike
Run through Rev. Al and Sharon Paquette; an Easter Egg Hunt hosted
by Kiwanis East Orange County; and Mother’s Day photos by Amy
Smith Photography.

Women’s Residential
and Counseling Center

The Women’s Residential and Counseling Center (WRCC), located a short distance from the main campus, is a transitional housing program for women and children.
The home-like facility accommodates up to 138 individuals, including 12 beds for emergency situations, and offers a 24-hour Crisis Hotline. Most residents in this
transitional housing program have an income.
� This year, 603 women and children were served at WRCC, 40 percent of whom were children in 131 families.
� 38 percent of clients were single women.
� 84 percent of the clients at WRCC were victims of crime, predominantly domestic violence.
� During the year, WRCC addressed 4,509 crisis calls on the 24-hour Crisis Hotline, a 27 percent increase over last year.
� WRCC residents who were fully-immersed in their case- managed plan stayed a bit longer than last year, or just over seven months.
� Of those who were homeless for the first time, 58 percent were mothers with children.
Residents at WRCC continued to take advantage of tutoring for children; free credit counseling through CredAbility; as well as case management, support groups,
and referrals through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program. They were treated to a host of offerings such as manicure and movie nights by New Beginnings
Church, monthly game nights from Hands On Orlando, the Penguins and Polar Bears reading group, and Baskets of Love from Space to Grow.
Of special mention this year, WRCC received a weekend-long exterior facelift by 213 volunteers on Orlando World Outreach Center’s “Do Something Day”
and a newly-painted dining room thanks to Charles Schwab employees. Residents celebrated the holidays with a party hosted by the Central Florida Hotel and Motel
Association, and WRCC welcomed the Coalition’s Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) program to the campus with a super Open House.

Men’s Pavilion
and Future Men’s Service Center

The Men’s Pavilion is a nightly drop-in shelter on the main campus that can house up
to 375 men, though it averages about 250 men each night. The facility provides
basic needs, including showers, lockers, a place to wash clothes, and a hot dinner
meal that is open to the community. Addicted clients are encouraged to enter
the First Steps Shelter Recovery Program for Men, a residential substance abuse
recovery program located in separate quarters within the Pavilion.
� During FY 2010-2011, a total of 1,907 men sought shelter at the Men’s Pavilion.
� The average length of stay at the Men’s Pavilion was 40 nights.
Dedicated volunteer groups continued to serve dinner on a regular basis throughout
the year, some having done so for almost 20 years. Others continued their
wonderful service of providing bicycles, clothes, shoes, and other needs for the men,
either monthly or during the holiday season.
� Russ Durham and friends continued to repair bicycles in the park by the Men’s
Pavilion; and John Helton and friends hosted a Christmas Day breakfast.
� For the 18th year, the Orlando Magic staff and volunteers sponsored a delicious
Thanksgiving breakfast for over 600 residents and carnival for the kids, complete
with Stuff the Mascot. Paul Mitchell The School provided free haircuts and Panera’s
goodies were loved by all.
Last year’s “buzz” about the advent of a new Men’s Service Center (MSC) only
intensified this year. Staff spent much time talking with homeless male clients,
sharing how services for them were going to be much improved by early 2013.
� Final design was completed on the new facility this year and groundbreaking
is anticipated in February 2012.

First Steps Substance Abuse Recovery Program
As one of the major contributors to homelessness, substance abuse can prove detrimental
for men and women who are striving to return to independence. To aid addicted clients
in achieving both self-sufficiency and sobriety, Coalition for the Homeless offers the First Steps
Substance Abuse Recovery Program to clients. This intensive non-traditional program has three
components and is supported by 12-step recovery strategies.
The First Steps Shelter Recovery Program for Men, with separate quarters in the Men’s
Pavilion, is an intensive four-month-minimum, residential rehabilitation program that enables
clients to take initial steps toward self-sufficiency and sobriety. Services include case
management, addiction support groups, life skills classes, educational and vocational training,
employability skills instruction, and mental health and medical referrals.
� A highlight this year was a very motivational visit from Boston Celtics Coach,
Doc Rivers.
� 94 men participated in the shelter program this year, with 36 percent moving on to more
stable housing.
� 1,317 men have been served by the program since its inception in 2002.
The six-to-eight month First Steps Transitional Housing Program, started in August 2009, offers
recovering male addicts the next stage toward independence. Transitional
housing is provided in the Coalition’s nine on-site apartments for up to 32 men,
all of whom have successfully completed the First Steps Shelter Recovery Program for Men
or a similar program and are recovering from their addictions.
� This year, 54 men participated in the transitional housing program, 41 percent of whom
successfully moved into the community.

The First Steps Shelter Recovery Program for
Women, begun in March 2009, is located
within the Center for Women and Families
and modeled after the men’s program.
For approximately four months, women
work on their recovery in conjunction with
Specialized Treatment, Education & Prevention
Services Inc. (STEPS), an off-site substance
abuse facility. They also utilize many of the
same services as do the First Steps men,
such as onsite AA and NA meetings. Those
who complete the program are eligible
for transitional housing at our Women’s
Residential and Counseling Center (WRCC).
� A partnership was established with
The Center for Drug Free Living, expanding
the number of beds available and providing
additional services, such as individual
counseling and support groups.
� 115 women were served by First Steps
this year, with 37 percent successfully
graduating the program.

The Coalition’s two-fold Community Housing Program,
Scattered Site and Housing Now, helps clients
who qualify secure affordable rental housing and
provides them rental assistance, case management,
and supportive services to help them re-establish their
household in the community.
Scattered Site helps those referred by a homeless
shelter, transitional housing program or substance
abuse program (whether the Coalition’s or others
in the community). Both individuals and families
are eligible for the program, as long as they can

demonstrate that they have had an income for the past
90 days and at least $1,000 in savings.
� This year, 16 individuals and 24 families with 54
children were placed in the community through this
one-year program.
Housing Now is a rapid rehousing program, started
in March 2010 as the result of funding from a Department
of Housing and Urban Development Rapid Rehousing
for Families Demonstration Program. This six-month
program targets only newly-homeless families with
dependent children. Clients must have at least one

moderate barrier to housing, such as temporary
financial strain, poor credit history, insufficient
childcare, or inadequate education skills, etc.
Those who qualify can also receive utility assistance
through a grant administered by the City of Orlando.
� By the end of the fiscal year, 47 families were
placed in rental units through Housing Now,
comprised of 103 children and 58 adults.
� Starting the end of last fiscal year with seven
families in two months, the number in this program
grew quickly.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES – MOVING KIDS FORWARD
Young children and their parents don’t usually come to mind when most people think
about homelessness. The reality, however, is quite different.
� During FY 2010-2011, the Coalition provided services to a total of 839 children
in 457 families, with an average age of eight years old.
� On a given night this year, children comprised 32 percent of our population,
for a nightly average of 215 youngsters.
Early Childhood Development Center
& Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Program
FY 2010-2011 proved to be another year of learning and accomplishment for the
six-week-old to four-year-old students at the Coalition’s fully-licensed daycare.
The Coalition also continued to offer the Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program
to four-year-olds to jump-start their educational readiness for kindergarten.
As in other years, the monthly learning themes for young students included
transportation, families, animals, health, the human body, holidays, and seasons,
to name a few. With the goals of acclimating homeless children to an atmosphere
of normalcy and giving them a sense of accomplishment, the youngsters learned
colors, numbers, letters and sounds. They had many new experiences, such as:
� Welcoming a new fish, which the kids named Flipper.
� Planting a vegetable and flower garden.
� Taking part in the Coalition’s Journey Home Breakfast at a downtown hotel.
� Sharing daycare activities with their folks on Parent Involvement Day.
� Hunting for Easter Eggs.
� Attending a “graduation party” for those who are off to kindergarten in the fall,
hosted by Hilton Grand Vacations Parc Soliel.

Child Development Services
The Coalition’s child development services recognize the unique
struggles faced by children experiencing homelessness. During the
year, staff continued to work to address the most critical issues
facing our youngest clients, such as self-esteem, behavioral
problems, social skills, and stigmas about homelessness. Those
identified as “at-risk” or “in-crisis” were referred to the child advocate
and/or one of our partner providers for assessment, individual and
family counseling, and other developmental services. Therapeutic
children’s activities, weekly peer group counseling sessions and
parenting workshops were also part of the equation.
� This year, Coalition staff referred 316 at-risk or in-crisis children
for child development services.
� 74 percent of them took advantage of the individual counseling
and support group services and showed improved stability.

Art By Coalition Children – ABCs
Started in October 2003, Art By Coalition Children (ABCs) was still going strong during
FY 2010-2011. This volunteer-driven program allows homeless children to express themselves
through the arts and increase their self-esteem. ABCs pairs professional artists in the
community with children living at the Coalition, enabling them to teach their artistic medium
to the budding artists in a number of weekly sessions.
� ABCs relocated from the main campus to a studio at WRCC, newly painted by UPS employees.
The move was celebrated with an open house for children, parents, artists and guests.
� A Wells Fargo Foundation grant infused new supplies into the program.
� Six sessions took place: Mayan Pottery, Chinese Calligraphy, Hula Dancing, Ancient Clay
Pieces and 3D Rooms, Gelatin Printmaking, and Photography.
� Art was exhibited at Wells Fargo Bank and the Maitland Art Center Children's Festival.

VOLUNTEERS:
OUR MOVERS & SHAKERS
Volunteers are the Coalition’s movers and shakers shakers. During
FY 2010-2011, individuals and groups from near and far
continued to help move the Coalition forward. By year’s
end, a record 17,022 volunteers had contributed 72,978
hours of their time and talent to the Coalition.
� 348 meal service groups helped cook and serve close
to 300,000 meals to Coalition residents, about 90 doing
so on a regular basis.
� Volunteers participated in 143 group projects, such as
landscaping, painting, tutoring, mentoring, and organizing
goods.
� Volunteers completed administrative tasks, taught ABCs classes, assisted in the
daycare, sponsored activities for adults and children, lent a hand at Coalition events
and represented the Coalition at community events as never before.
� The Coalition sponsored its first annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic.

There are few ways to adequately thank everyone who devoted time
and talent to the Coalition during the year, even with a picnic. In addition
to those mentioned throughout this report, other indispensible volunteer
activities include:
� Dark Horse Foundation treated Coalition kids to a day-long trip to Walt
Disney World and a trip to Chuck E. Cheese.
� Florida Southern College nursing students hosted a health workshop
for fathers at the Center for Women and Families (CWF).
� Darden employees painted the CWF exterior; American Teleservices
Association employees painted the family room hallways; and Villanova
University alumni painted the conference room.
� Help Portrait took beautiful portraits for Coalition residents; EA sports
hosted a kid’s video game day with pizza; and the University of North
Carolina Alumni Club hosted an arts and crafts activity.
� Caribe Royale and Morgan and Morgan employees held new toy drives.
� First United Methodist Church hosted a “Christmas Shopping Mall”
for CWF parents; and WMFE held a Mr. Rogers Sweater drive.
� Blanket drives were held by Keeth Elementary School, Caroline Noonan,
the Winter Park Sunday Running group of the Orlando Runners Club
and others.
� Getaboard Foundation held weekly classes and provided a skateboarding
event.
� Doorstep Delivery kicked-off their “Delivering Hope” program with an
event at the CWF to collect leftover food from area restaurants and deliver
it to the Coalition.

18th Annual Hearts of Gold
Nearly 1,500 people rocked to the
music of Beatlemania Now at the 18th
Annual Hearts of Gold on Friday, April
22, 2011 at Hard Rock Live. The event,
which raised over $200,000 for the
Coalition’s programs and services,
was co-emceed by WKMG Local 6
weatherman Troy Bridges and 105.9
Sunny FM personality Domino. An original
score and lyrics, written for the Coalition
by David Schweizer (aka Davey
Rocker), and a touching video by Foster
Productions were unveiled at this
very successful event. The 60s-themed
evening was presented for the seventh
year by the law firm of Dellecker Wilson
King McKenna Ruffier and Sos LLP.
FUNDRAISING EVENTS
Doug Spencer
15th Annual Golf Challenge
The Doug Spencer 15th Annual Golf
Challenge was held on May 20, 2011,
raising over $70,000 for the Coalition.
The event, with Honorary Chair PGA
Class-A Professional Brad Brewer,
took place at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club
in Kissimmee. Twenty-four golfers
challenged each other for the most holes
played in five hours and the most money
collected. Again this year, the top
fundraiser was event namesake Doug
Spencer, who single-handedly raised
$12,670 for his 93-hole afternoon.

Over 325 people attended the Empty
Bowls Symbolic Soup Kitchen Luncheon
on November 15, 2010, which raised
awareness about hunger in Central
Florida and over $20,000 to help fill
the region’s “empty bowls.” The event,
presented by GrayRobinson, P.A., took
place at the Sonesta Hotel Orlando
Downtown and was emceed by Magic
107.7 DJ Ken Payne. Formerly hosted
by Second Harvest Food Bank, the
luncheon featured heartfelt remarks of
gratitude from a Coalition First Steps
Substance Abuse Recovery Program
client, as well as a traditional soup
kitchen meal of soup, salad and bread.
As a lasting reminder, attendees
received a pottery bowl handcrafted
by Stella Tagliavore and local artists.
The Journey Home Breakfast
The first-ever Journey Home Breakfast
was held on May 3, 2011 at the
Sonesta Hotel Orlando Downtown, with
over 300 people attending. The event
provided an opportunity for those
already invested in the Coalition to
invite others to consider supporting the
agency’s mission. Former clients shared
their emotional stories and a touching
new video, produced with much heart
by Foster Productions, was shown.
With a generous, initial gift by Ralph
Addington, The Journey Home Society
was established, raising over $170,000
in cash and pledges for the Coalition’s
programs and services.
