welcome
Barbara Lenhard & Florian Gast,
Founders and co-owners of
Opulent Living and creators of
‘Chefs who share’
Dear friends of ‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’,
We are proud to be hosting our exclusive black-tie gala which, in its
third year running, is once again proudly presented by Mercedes-
Benz. We are thrilled too to welcome our associate sponsors from
last year namely Deutsche Bank and Swiss International Air Lines.
With this incredible team effort backing this concept, nearly
R4 million nett has been raised within two years, making us all proud
and encouraging us to do even more.
‘Chefs who share’ welcomes three incredible additional companies
on board and is delighted to announce that Bulgari, Frey Chocolate
and the Century City Conference Centre are new associate sponsors.
It would not be possible to achieve our goals without such partners
who believe in our ideas and who enjoy bringing these ideas to life.
This recent development has enabled us to host a pre-event to make
‘Chefs who share’ more accessible and to draw more attention to the
auction, integral to the success of ‘the ART of giving’. Without generous
donations from outstanding artists and companies we would not be
able to raise the amounts achieved – all in aid of our benefitting charities.
Over and above this, the inaugural ‘Chefs who share – Young Chef
Award’ has drawn a lot of attention and we are proud of the seven
finalists. They have shown creativity, skill and drive. For one of them
‘Chefs who share’ will present a unique opportunity to gain some
valuable career experience in Europe.
The ‘Veggie Box Initiative’ is growing and with the help of fabulous
people the project has become more sustainable. Individuals and
companies are invited to become partners and to contribute in
various ways. We hope that many people and companies join forces
with us and the project.
We sincerely invite you. Much like in sport: a team can achieve so
much more if the message is clear and the aim transparent.
Thank you for being part of ‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’.
Carpe Diem,
Foreword
Florian Seidler,
Co-CEO Mercedes-Benz South
Africa & Executive Director,
Mercedes-Benz Cars
Fine dining is a culinary art that is both fascinating and enjoyable
and here in South Africa, we are fortunate to have the opportunity
to experience a number of superb restaurants and world-class
establishments. Our customers enjoy fine dining experiences and we
have identified numerous opportunities with which to associate our
brand and products. The prestigious annual ‘Chefs who share – the
ART of giving’ is one such event that we are delighted to support.
This event not only brings our customers together for an evening
of networking and entertainment, it also has an important socialresponsibility
element.
At Mercedes-Benz South Africa we take social responsibility seriously
and are committed to making a difference wherever possible.
Mercedes-Benz and its employees support charitable projects and
initiatives by not only donating money, but also by personally getting
involved in various initiatives.
One such initiative is our role of Country Patron of the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation. As a leading company that works hard to
remain at the cutting edge of technology and global competitiveness,
the opportunity to be the Country Patron of the Laureus Sports
Foundation is very important, as it gives us the chance to keep our
eyes on the goal of improving the environment and communities in
which we operate. We are proud of this business imperative, and the
role we play in making sure it remains at the top of our priorities.
We aim to provide our customers with the assurance that not only
are they driving vehicles that are the pinnacle of luxury, but that the
company producing their vehicles is a committed and responsible
corporate citizen and takes into account the world in which they live,
with a view to improving it and the lives we touch as much as possible.
This is why we are pleased to donate a portion of money raised from
‘Chefs who share’ to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Last year
we were fortunate to give R1-million, and these funds went a long
way in supporting various Laureus projects countrywide.
2015 sees Mercedes-Benz reach 65 years of building passion and
communities in South Africa, an important milestone which we and
our employees are celebrating. As part of these celebrations, we will
continue our efforts in supporting our various initiatives.
laureus
sport for good
foundation
A platform for young people
to become the role models and
youth leaders of tomorrow
www.laureus.co.za
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation operates in 34 countries,
supports 140 projects and is changing the lives of 1,5 million
children. It supports and assists a worldwide programme of sportsrelated
community projects that have been working to educate
children, protect the vulnerable from illness and advocate for the
rights development of those who have a disability, or mental health
and learning difficulties.
Supporting the Foundation is the Laureus World Sports Academy
– a dedicated team of 46 legendary sportsmen and sportswomen,
who’ve all volunteered their services to this cause, acting as global
ambassadors and visiting projects to encourage young people to
participate in sport.
While the Laureus World Sports Awards Ceremony has created a
unique place for itself in the sporting calendar, the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation has achieved acclaim for the work it does with
underprivileged children. In the past decade, the programme has
provided young people with increased confidence and self-esteem,
given them access to accredited qualifications, training placements and
employment, and has even brought people from divided communities
together in friendship by reducing discrimination and stereotyping in
social networks.
Laureus was launched in 1998 by Dr Johann Rupert, Chairman of
luxury goods company Richemont. The very first Laureus World Sports
Awards ceremony was initiated two years later in Monaco, with Nelson
Mandela as guest of honour.
Later, with the aim of developing Laureus into a year-round charity
dedicated to effecting social change through sport, the Laureus Sport
for Good Foundation was born in partnership with Mercedes-Benz and
international watch company, IWC Schaffhausen. The very first project
was the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) based in one of
the largest and poorest slums in Nairobi. There, disease is widespread
and HIV/AIDS is a serious problem. The project pioneered the use of
football as a tool to encourage co-operation and raise self-esteem
in the young people of the community. Young people who’ve been
involved in MYSA since the beginning have now become role models
and youth leaders in their communities.
Today, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is represented in South
Africa, Germany, Argentina, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands and the
USA and incorporates an increasing list of sports codes. The growth
of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation over the past 15 years has
been remarkable, and the list of projects within the Laureus network
currently stands at over 140.
MAD leadership
foundation
Nurturing top talent and
high-performance individuals to
create positive change
www.madcharity.org
The MAD Leadership Foundation strives to give academically talented
yet economically disadvantaged youth in South Africa an opportunity
to reach their full potential as leaders and role models by providing
exceptional educational and related opportunities. In so doing, MAD’s
aim is to create alumni beneficiaries who will create positive change
in an emerging democracy.
MAD Leadership Foundation (Make A Difference) was founded in 2003
by Francois Pienaar and a group of friends who truly believe in the
future of South Africa and the endless potential it holds.
The primary goal of MAD Leadership Foundation is to identify a cadre
of academically talented South African learners from less fortunate
backgrounds and to support their education and life-skills development
up to the point at which they’re ready to enter the job market. Such
a learner will join MAD’s Individual Education Programme under the
guidance of the Mentorship Programme.
“Business organisations and sporting teams have long recognised the
importance of nurturing top talent and believe that a small, but vital
minority of top performers can create positive change,” says Francois.
“The idea is to develop these high-performance individuals so that
they too become role models who inspire others, and who will support
each other in the future by giving back to others.”
MAD Leadership Foundation also supports a number of broad-based
education programmes that promote literacy and environmental
awareness in young learners throughout South Africa.
Since the beginning, the foundation has granted scholarships for
college, provided for the travel costs of athletes, donated shoes to
orphans and contributed to the medical costs of underprivileged
children with rare genetic disorders.
One of these was Giana – a little girl diagnosed with a rare and relatively
new disease called Loeys-Dietz Syndrome. The genetic disorder affects
the connective tissue in the body and Giana suffers from twisted
arteries throughout her body as a result. The foundation provided for
her travel costs to Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Maryland, where
she was able to meet with medical professionals.
While MAD’s focus is on assisting local communities, it also reaches
out to the underprivileged across the globe. To date, it has supported
in excess of 2000 youngsters through the MAD Leadership Foundation
Education Programmes.
supporting
the local community
Seven chefs from Michelin-starred
restaurants in Germany and Austria
plus Rudi Liebenberg cook with the
contents of the Veggie Boxes for 150
children in 2014.
Through the Veggie Box Initiative, ‘Chefs who share – the ART of
giving’ provides patrons with the opportunity to support children
in Cape Town’s challenged and vulnerable communities with fresh
produce for healthier meals.
A donation of R1 000 buys one Veggie Box, with the money
going directly to well-established charities, such as the Amy Biehl
Foundation, that provide vulnerable Cape Town children with healthy
meals and education on nutrition.
Raising successful children depends on providing them with the best
education possible, but no child can learn on an empty stomach. The
nutritious meals provided by the Veggie Box Initiative not only meet
the physical needs of hungry children, but enhance their ability to
learn and increase their class attendance.
As part of the initiative, volunteer chefs also visit and help out at
schools, kindergartens, crèches and other facilities supported by the
charities that distribute the food. Under the ‘Chefs who share – the
ART of giving’ umbrella, they share their expertise by demonstrating
how to transform the ingredients of each vegetable box into
mouthwatering meals.
The Veggie Box Initiative started at the 2013 ‘Chefs who share – the
ART of giving’ event and has grown rapidly in the past year, with
more and more partners coming on board and working to promote it
to their clients. With their help and the ongoing support of patrons,
the good food and healthy-eating advice provided by the initiative
will form the building blocks to unlocking children’s creative talent
and creating emotionally well-rounded individuals, leaders and
entrepreneurs for South Africa’s future.
Pledge cards for Veggie Box donations are available on each of
the tables. Each Veggie Box costs R1 000, with all proceeds going
to a charity supporting children in need. The more boxes that are
purchased, the more healthy meals will be provided to South Africa’s
poorest children.
Veggie Boxes can also be bought
throughout the year on the website: www.chefswhoshare.com
Introduction
We make a living by what we
get, but we make a life by what
we give.
Winston Churchill
To sell this wonderful collection of original art and exciting experiences,
Iain Banner returns as the ‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’
auctioneer. Iain conducted the very successful 2013 and 2014 auctions,
and we’re excited to have him back for a third time at this year’s event.
Iain began his career by co-founding Sports International with Marc
Player in 1986, where he focused on creating sports properties
and events that were owned by the company. The establishment of
The Gary Player Design Company, of which Iain was a partner
responsible for business development outside the US, followed.
Asking artists to donate work is a delicate thing – you’re literally asking
them to give away a part of their income. In South Africa especially,
there are also so many other charities and functions that approach
well-known contemporary artists with similar requests. We’re proud,
therefore, to have an even larger collection of high-quality pieces
from some of South Africa’s most famous artists on auction at this
year’s ‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’ in Cape Town.
The 2015 auction also includes several exceptional experiences and
luxury items donated by business partners who share in our ethos of
giving back.
In 1994, Iain sold his interest in the company and joined Richemont
as sponsorship director, responsible for developing and managing
sponsorship strategies for the group’s brands worldwide. During this
time, he helped develop the Laureus World Sports Awards, Laureus
Sport for Good Foundation and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
at St Andrews in Scotland.
In 2005, Iain returned to South Africa from London to focus on various
business interests. He has served on a number of boards, including that
of the South African Rugby Union (1997-2000) and the Sports Science
Institute of South Africa (since 1994). Iain is married to Kim Kallie and
they have two children, Matthew and Sarah-Paige.
Through the overwhelming generosity of these artists and businesses,
we are able to motivate our guests to contribute generously to our
chosen charities. By investing in one of these original artworks and
unique experiences our guests not only enrich their lives, but also
help children in South Africa to have a brighter future. We’d like
to extend a huge thank you to all the contributors, and to all those
bidding on their offerings.
the artist
David Kuijers was born in Vanderbijlpark of Dutch immigrant parents.
His father was a part-time artist who painted under the pseudonym
B. Arteld. Surrounded from a very young age by art materials and
books, art was always going to be a part of his life. He completed
his schooling at the Art, Music and Ballet School (now Pro Arte) in
Pretoria, with a distinction in Graphics and the “Best Painter” award
for the year.
After his military service, David spent 1986 as a mediocre and
frustrated signwriter. He entered the Cape Technikon (now the Cape
Peninsula University of Technology) the following year hoping to do a
diploma in Fine Art, but studied Graphic Design, as the former course
was discontinued. He majored in Illustration and received the Merit
Award for 1989 on graduating.
After freelancing as a designer/illustrator for some years, he received
some large commissions, which helped to ease his transition to fulltime
artist. These commissions included work for the President Hotel
in Bantry Bay, The Radisson Blu at the V&A Waterfront, the Mediclinic
private hospital group and Tiger Brands.
In 2002 a book entitled David Kuijers Paints the Town was published in
Cape Town. In 2004, he joined British publishers DeMontfort Fine Art.
David’s work, incorporating clean cut lines and vibrant colours, is now
well known throughout the greater Cape Town area.
David Lurie was born in Cape Town. He studied economics, politics
and philosophy, and taught philosophy at the University of Cape
Town. From 1980 to 1985 he undertook research in the Department
of International Relations at the London School of Economics, and
co-edited Millennium: Journal of International Studies, after which he
worked as a consultant-economist in London.
A self-taught photographer, he began doing documentary projects
part-time in 1990 and full-time in 1995, following the publication of
his first book, Life in the Liberated Zone, in 1995.
Lurie’s work has been widely published and exhibited in the United
Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Australia, South Africa and the
Middle East. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including Pictures
of the Year International; the World Understanding Award for “Cape
Hennessy 250
Collector Blend
Lot no. 3
Hennessy 250 Collector Blend in
a 750ml decanter
inclusive of Celebration Display
donated by
Hennessy
In the long history of distinguished cognac-maison, Hennessy, only
a handful of special blends have been added to the stable; the likes
of Hennessy XO, Hennessy Privé and Hennessy Paradis. Now Master
Blender Yann Fillioux has created an unrivalled cognac to mark the
250th anniversary of Hennessy this year.
The Hennessy 250 Collector Blend has been carefully crafted from
100 individual eaux-de-vie, each painstakingly assessed by the
Comité de Dégustation as being worthy of inclusion in this landmark
cognac. With the eaux-de-vie identified, the spirits were aged in 250
handcrafted barrels of Limousin oak, each barrel holding precisely
250 litres and gently matured in the cool cellars of Cognac. Finally
judged ready for release, and embodying the long history and great
distinction of this acclaimed marque, the limited edition blend is an
unrivalled cognac offering aromatic tones of spice and bitter orange,
fresh nutmeg and heady saffron.
Only 250 bottles of this collector’s-edition cognac were shipped
to South Africa – and this decanter represents a rare chance for
connoisseurs to acquire a distinctive, and exclusive, spirit. Each
limited-edition bottle is individually numbered, and enclosed in
a specially designed gift box: a graphic silver map on a luxurious
copper metallic surface — evoking Hennessy’s 250-year adventure of
international expansion, crafting the future since 1765.
Ingrid Bolton is relatively new on the South African art scene, with
her first solo exhibition having only taken place in 2013, but she has
already established herself as a household name.
Through her work, she explores how copper is deconstructed, broken
down into individual strands and then reconstructed in various ways.
“I investigate how the global demand for copper has micro and macro
implications for South Africa as well as the greater global community,”
she says. “We live as individuals but are part of the whole. We are
the micro within the macro, but we become more of the macro
when we connect. We connect via phones and the internet to access
individuals, companies and organisations. We join, we link and we
visit. We communicate from extreme ends of the globe, instantly. All
these connections are made possible because of the conductive ability
of copper, on which we rely for transmission.
“The network of connectivity is a web of cables laid above and below
us, easily accessible and stolen. With the growing demand for copper,
resulting in its increased price, interruptions are happening more
frequently due to cable theft. Commuters are stranded, electricity is
cut and connections are severed.”
Medium: Acrylic, ink and
Framed
Indicated value:
ZAR 32 000
The paintings of Michaela Rinaldi tell a story of her journey through
feelings of abandonment, lack, self-numbing and body-image issues
to a place of acceptance and self-adoration.
Painting is a gift that has allowed her to explore herself in a way she
never knew possible. Michaela paints with no preconceived ideas, no
under-pencil mark-ups – just straight from a feeling, and usually quite
fluidly and quickly. The themes present themselves as she paints.
The “Abandonment” series show backs of figures that walk away. That
is a common theme in many of her older and more recent works. The
female form, which is often portrayed, mirrors her body-image issues
and lack of self-love, and lacks the voyeur judgement on society.
“As I paint through my fears, I am closer to overcoming them,” she says.
“It is not all a tragic story; the outcome is happiness and I am feeling it.”
Size: 35cm x 25cm
Medium: Bronze
the artist
Keith Calder’s initial training in the animal form began while
working in the field of nature conservation and field guiding. While
recovering from malaria, he created his first animal sculptures from
clay. In 1988 he received his first commission and left the bush to
concentrate on sculpture.
Keith is well known for successfully creating both realistic and
stylised sculpture, and has had both these forms celebrated locally
and internationally. The realistic, figurative work is born out of his
close association with nature, while the more recent stylised, almost
futuristic, work stems from the same source but explores new avenues
of expression.
For Keith, sculpting is a creative means of expressing the very essence
of life, energy and motion. He lives and works in Cape Town and his
sculptures can be seen throughout South Africa and abroad, gracing
entrances to locations such as the De Beers offices in Düsseldorf,
Germany and the Gold Souk in Dubai. His recent work also includes
a four-metre-high footballer, a reference to the 2010 FIFA World Cup
held in South Africa, that can be seen on the Foreshore in Cape Town.
This work is the result of a collaboration between Arno Carstens and
Barend de Wet in 2012 and was donated from Arno’s private collection.
Lot no. 8
Title: Man in Need of Space
Size: 89cm x 71 cm
Medium: Oil on canvas
Indicated value:
ZAR 35 000
Best known for his career as a singer-songwriter and frontman for
the Springbok Nude Girls, multi-award winning artist, Arno Carstens,
has in fact been expressing himself across a variety of creative media
over the last 20 years. Decades in the making, his love for painting has
culminated in an extensive collection, and like his voice, the style is
immediately and uniquely, Arno Carstens.
Arno studied graphic art in 1992, following a lifelong passion with the
arts. As a child he dreamed that he would embark on a career as an
artist, but when he met Theo Crous in 1994, and together with Arno
Blumer, Francious Kruger and Adriaan Brand, formed the Springbok
Nude Girls, his focus shifted to music, where it stayed for the next 18
years.
In 2010 Arno returned to SA after three years of writing, recording and
touring his third solo album, ‘Wonderful Wild’ abroad. Back in Cape
Town, Arno began working on an idea for this exhibition, a two-year
journey that saw him return to his first love: fine art.
Besides an exciting collection of solo works, Arno has, over the years,
collaborated with local artists Beezy Bailey, Jack Mantis, Barend de
Wet and Marinda Swartz.
A mythical figure in the South African art world, Barend de Wet was
born in Boksburg, Gauteng in 1958 and completed his education at
the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in
1990. Currently based in Cape Town, De Wet’s oeuvre encompasses
traditional media, craft skills and fanatical hobbyist creations
including sculptures, ‘knitted paintings’, performances and productive
collaborations.
Russell Travers was born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1960. In 1981
he fled South Africa for Sweden, where he received asylum.
In Sweden he worked as an art director for various advertising
agencies. He went on to work for Svensk Filmindustri as a presenter
for a satellite television programme co-produced by Sky TV, which
saw him travelling throughout Scandinavia interviewing pop and rock
personalities and generally reviewing the pop-culture scene.
Russell paints images collected from various sources, including artists,
old family photographs and children’s drawings. Other inspiration is
referenced from books, station walls and the scrawls on buildings
of inner-city ghettos – he even uses technical drawings of aircraft,
weapons systems and rocket motors. Whatever the images, they are
defaced and compressed, and their formations and patterns recreated
and layered in a coloured and multi-textured way.
In 1998 Russell opened a daylight studio in Cape Town, using it as a
base for his expanding repertoire of large-format oil paintings. He has
sold extensively to art buyers through various galleries in South Africa
and internationally. Russell still resides in Sweden.
Title: Memory of Blue
Size: 100cm x 100cm
Medium: Ink, acrylic and gold
leaf on canvas
Indicated value:
ZAR 25 000
Heike Allerton-Davies grew up in the Eastern Cape. She studied
painting at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape
Town, where she graduated in 2000. She now lives and works in
Franschhoek in the Western Cape.
Her portraits reflect the use of mixed media – ranging from acrylic to
watercolours – which enable Heike to capture her subjects’ diversity,
complexity and fragility. The acrylic drawing ink creates a distinctive,
wild and unpredictable effect, while Heike’s use of gold leaf often
lends a rich, warm background to her portraits. Heike’s work often
focuses on female sexuality and the complexities of being objectified
by the male gaze. She explores issues of vulnerability and strength and
portrays this in large-scale nudes in various confrontational portraits.
Heike’s work has been represented through a number of art fairs locally
and abroad over the past few years, including the 2013 Affordable Art
Fair in Battersea, London, and she has established herself as a firm
favourite with art collectors all over the country.
A new career highlight is a collaboration with Hamilton Russell
Vineyards to design a label for its 2015 Vertical Collection Pinot Noir,
which sees each limited-edition vintage paired with a South African
artist. She joins the exclusive ranks of Beezy Bailey, William Kentridge
and Gerard Sekoto, who have also created labels for the wines.
Who knows more about wine, and how the right wine perfectly
complements a meal to provide a superior gourmet experience, than
an experienced sommelier? The seven sommeliers who have lent their
extensive expertise to ‘Chefs who share - the ART of giving’ 2015 are
among the most accomplished in their field. Some have worked in
international Michelin-starred restaurants alongside the world’s top
chefs, while others have honed their knowledge in South Africa’s best
dining establishments. Together they’ve earned a string of awards.
Now they’ve come together to create an exceptional once-off wine,
Schalk van der Merwe’s visceral portraits have a directness about
them, yet are underpinned with a tangible fragility. Ambiguous
features can morph from immense beauty into utter despair, with
hints of the eyes breaking the surface beneath layers of paint,
charcoal, turpentine, expressive brushstrokes and often the physical
DNA from the artist’s fingertips.
Van der Merwe’s work explores the concept of taking the mind out
of the creative process to allow for a more honest expression. His
art captures a vast range of emotions and often provokes a strong
reaction from the viewer.
“My work is not reliant on a cognitive process. I believe overthinking
can destroy originality. My portraits aren’t about realism, perfection,
gender or race. They explore and attempt to capture those qualities
and emotions often hidden from view,” he says.
Van der Merwe’s work is arresting, intriguing and oddly attractive.
Each portrait has a delicate, melancholic expression with a coarse and
visceral application of paint. Each face offers some deeply personal
recognition of the subject even though the features are blurred to the
point of anonymity.
Samuel Allerton is a sculptor living in Franschhoek, where he has
a home and a studio. He studied at Ampleforth College in England
and the Slade School of Fine Art in London before returning to South
Africa to do a degree in sculpture at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at
the University of Cape Town, where he graduated with distinction. As
an undergraduate he was awarded the Irma Stern Scholarship, and he
remained on the Dean’s Merit List throughout his studies.
He works full-time as a sculptor, predominantly creating works for
private collectors both locally and abroad. Sam is strongly influenced
by nature and the fate of the environment and his works exude a
powerful primitive source that is timeless.
He approaches his work from two very different formal perspectives,
resulting in two styles that, although they seem to be polar
opposites, both say the same thing. His sculptures tend to be simple,
contemplative, often solemn – drawing influences from artists such
as Mark Rothko, Henry Moore, Anthony Gormley, Isamu Noguchi and
Constantin Brancusi. His drawings and paintings on the other hand
are direct, impulsive outbursts, either shouting at the world for help
or reprimanding humanity for its hypocrisies, and blatant injustices
towards nature and towards each other. These drawings are honest,
often shocking and always intimate. Samuel combines quirky, primitive
and contemporary symbolism, deliberate sentimentality and emotion
which tends to “throw the personal touch on the universal”.
Cyrus Kabiru is a self-taught, emerging Kenyan artist, best known for
his elaborate and detailed sculptural spectacles or “C-Stunners”, made
These “Afrodazzled” spectacular bifocals are entirely his own invention
and are intimately linked to his life-story. The project has rapidly
evolved in recent years and Kabiru now exhibits all over the world.
Exhibitions take the form of installations and larger works such as his
‘Bicycle’ series, where discarded and outdated cycles are ‘recycled’ and
transformed into unique sculptural assemblages.
Kabiru’s work also falls within the vernacular of ‘Afrofuturism’, a term
coined by the American cultural theorist Mark Dery in his essay “Black
to the Future” (1993). It’s a term that has become increasingly popular
in discourse surrounding African contemporary art and art inspired
by new trends on the continent, such as the recent “Afronaut” project
by German photojournalist Cristina de Middel (2012). Afrofuturism is
described as “an emergent literary and cultural aesthetic that combines
elements of science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, Afrocentricity,
and magic realism with non-Western cosmologies in order to critique
not only the present-day dilemmas of people of colour, but also to
revise, interrogate, and re-examine the historical events of the past”.
Recently Zeitz MOCAA purchased the full first edition of Kabiru’s
Macho Nne series for permanent display.
Anton Smit was born on 2 August 1954 in Boksburg, South Africa,
on the back seat of a car on the way to hospital, outside the Colgate
factory. His father was a police officer, his beloved mother a teacher.
Anton spends the first three months of the year in his Cape studios
in Strand, and for the rest of the year works from his studios at
Bronkhorstspruit Dam, where he oversees a dedicated workforce of 14
people. “They are like family,” he says.
Anton in his creative prime is a force to be reckoned with. His body
of work comprises towering human figures, nudes, impressive heads,
masks, hands, angels, floating and stretching figures, warriors as well
as abstract works, using mostly steel, metal, sand casting, fibreglass
and bronze.
For decades Anton has been a firm favourite among the finest
statesmen as well as the most famous art collectors from around the
globe, with standout achievements too many to mention. He considers
one of the highlights of his career to be “The Age of Grace”, an eightfoot-high
bronze sculpture at Grand Central Station in New York City,
which celebrated South African heritage and was displayed on the
front cover of The New York Times.
Anton collects sayings about the relationship between art and the
individual artist’s experience of reality. “Art is not to render the
visible but to render visible,” he asserts, and his art achieves this in
many ways. An inspiring raconteur, Anton enjoys relating tales of
his struggles as a young artist. The secret to his success could be
attributed to his courage and determination to forge ahead in the face
of great difficulty. “A human being consists of the choices he makes,“
concludes Anton.
Jimmy Law was born in Bloemfontein in September 1970, and enrolled
at the Technikon Orange Free State (now the Central University of
Technology) for a three-year Graphic Design Diploma course. After
completing his Military Service, he based himself in Cape Town where
he found work as a freelance illustrator and worked in the comic-book
industry. In his spare time, however, he was painting.
In 2008, he finally made the decision to focus entirely on his painting.
At the time, he worked in a photo-realistic style and his canvases
took a long time to complete. In December 2010, however, he
radically changed his painting style, using only large brushes, which
initiated some remarkable changes and effectively started his career
as a serious, full-time artist. His focus is on creating energetic and
expressive portraits and nudes in a fairly large format using oils.
“I started working with palette knifes during the winter of 2014 and
have since fallen in love with them,” says Jimmy. “Many of my current
works consist largely of palette-knife work combined with brushes. I
am fascinated with the human face and features and the multitude of
expressions and emotions found within a person’s eyes. Our faces are
like landscapes with endless variation and complexities. I am drawn to
explore this landscape.“
Many of Law’s works now adorn homes and offices around South
Africa, as well as the homes of collectors around the world.
Richard Scott
Cape Town artist Richard Scott is fast becoming a household name thanks to his growing popularity on the
South African and international art market over the past five to 10 years.
His work exhibits some characteristics that may be associated with the 1960s Pop Art movement. Colourful
and figurative, it mostly portrays female semi-nudes in a variety of playful stances, or his other favourite
subjects, trees and animals. Richard’s paintings fascinate because of their daring simplicity and directness,
illustrating his indifference to serious academic sanctioning and unknowingly even provoking and
problematising formal classification.
donated by
the artist
Richard is always passionate about his art, his creative processes and his conceptualisation of ideas, whether
he works in sculpture, painting, drawing, graphics or prints. Like numerous other Pop artists such as Roy
Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, he values the creative process as highly as
the finished product.
ZAR 180 000
Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe grew up on a farm near the diamond-mining
town of Cullinan. It was here that she became interested in art, creating
and re-interpreting materials from an early age. She remembers
sitting on the banks of a small stream and building imaginary cities
and their people from the red mud, and recalls being on the floor in
her mother’s ceramic studio and pressing fingerprints into a ball of
clay, entranced by the malleability.
Marieke completed a BA Honours in Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria,
graduating in 1999. She is currently in the process of completing her
Masters in Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1997,
Marieke received a merit award in the Sasol New Signatures art
competition, as well as second place in the PPC Cement Young Concrete
Sculptor Awards. She went on to win the PPC Cement Young Concrete
Sculptor Award in 1999. She has completed numerous commissions
and her work is represented in the Johannesburg Art Gallery as well as
in several public sites, private collections and galleries.
The primary focus and preoccupation of Marieke’s body of work is and
has been an exploration of the female form. She is intrigued by the
way in which sculpture mimics the three dimensionality of a human
presence and thus the slightly surreal dialogue it invites – human to
human look-alike. She also loves the capacity that sculpture has to
freeze the transient into sculpted reality keeping it “alive” long after
moments and persons have changed.
country’s youngest investment artists, and abroad. His work is
currently on exhibition at art fairs in Amsterdam, Germany, India,
Miami, Monaco, London and Hong Kong. Over the past 10 years he
has established a substantial international following with collectors
ranging from Standard Chartered Bank to Laurence Graff, with Graff’s
acquisitions on display at his Delaire Graff wine estate.
One of Lionel’s paintings was exhibited as part of the 2013 BP Portrait
Awards at the National Portrait Gallery in London, where it won the
Viewer’s Choice Award and was selected as the main ‘face’ used in
advertising and posters for the exhibition. Another career highlight
was having one of his paintings published on the cover of ‘Christie’s
Auction Catalogue’. He was also recently honoured with a Ministerial
Award for Visual Art from the Department of Culture.
Lionel exemplifies the creative’s urge for constant experimentation.
Exploring themes that include cultural and individual identity within
South Africa, his portraits showcase a complex interplay of artistic
expression and aesthetic sensitivity that allows his work to be both
conceptually complex while remaining accessible to the general public.
A constant drive to experiment with his chosen medium –
predominantly bronze and oil paint – has allowed his technique and
aesthetic to grow and develop.
silent auction:
THE little artist School
Deutsche Bank South Africa Foundation (DBSAF) is a proud supporter
of The Little Artist School, a Johannesburg-based project that creates
an opportunity for disadvantaged youth to attend art classes and to
learn a skill. It has brought seven works from the school to exhibit at
‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’, all of which can be bid for in a
silent auction during the course of the evening. The winning bids will
be announced at the end of the event, with all money raised going
back to the school.
Founded in 1999 by internationally renowned artist Edward
Selematsela, The Little Artist School provides rehabilitated street
children, orphans and those from poor inner-city communities with
the facilities to explore their creative potential. With patience and
encouragement, Edward and his team of artist teachers assist the
children in developing their self-esteem and in ultimately becoming
productive individuals. The project has been a success story with the
help and encouragement of Peter Robinson and his late wife Dulcie,
who answered the call to assist Edward achieve his goal.
The Little Artist School not only offers an art education, it also opens
its children’s minds to innovative solutions and creative thinking. The
school offers a consistent and safe space where the art teachers –
who include Edward, Ramarutha Makoba, Lazarus Ramontseng, Hines
Matshoba, Bheki Mthethwa and Boderick Somana – are not only
teachers but strong role models and mentors for the youth.
“In black communities only very few children know what art is,”
says Edward. “The idea is to provide a facility where the children can
develop confidence through achievement in creative skills. Keeping
the children off the street and from crime by fostering their skills is a
key aspect of the organisation.“
A primary objective of The Little Artist School is to get students’ art to a
level where it can be displayed at various exhibitions. To give students
a platform, it has recently opened Art Gallery on Milner, located at 144
Milner Avenue in Roosevelt Park, Johannesburg.
DBSAF has invested over R100 million in education and social projects
in South Africa. It is proud to fund this incredible project, which
promotes South African culture, discipline and a desire to strive.
The Foundation has arranged permanent teaching facilities at Barnato
High School in Hillbrow, where Tuesday and Thursday afternoon art
lessons provide a space for budding young artists, aged between six
and 22, to learn and practise art using various techniques. It has also
taken a group of artists to London to experience the city’s renowned
art galleries and museums.
The majority of the paintings created by The Little Artist School are
entered into competitions, and where possible, exhibited and sold
locally. Deutsche Bank also hosts an annual exhibition of the school’s
work, which is open to both staff and clients. All funds raised go
directly to the artists who participated. Through these initiatives, it
aims to give the children the chance to become award-winning artists,
a goal which some alumni of the school have already achieved.
Through partnership and the active participation of staff and clients,
Deutsche Bank hopes to continue to provide a stage and audience for
these talented individuals.
SILENT AUCTION: HOW TO BID
Edward Selematsela was born in the rural area of Modjadji in
Limpopo. He studied graphic design and art at Eastside College (now
Johannesburg College) in Troyeville. He then started a fine-arts degree
at UNISA which, although he would have loved to, did not complete
because of the expense of transporting his artworks to the university.
After meeting Dulcie Robinson, she became his mentor, encouraging
him and promoting his art. She also helped him to realise his dream
of teaching art to underprivileged children by establishing The Little
Artist School.
Godfrey Ncube was born in Plumtree, Zimbabwe in 1991 where he
grew up in the area of Madlambudzi.
He came to South Africa in 2010 and began art lessons at The Little Artist
School in 2013. During the same year he won an award at the Black
Like Us annual exhibition. In 2014 he was accepted as a full member
of Artist Under The Sun, where he exhibits his work every month.
In 1997 he received the merit of excellence award from the French
Culture Centre in Pessac, Bordeaux. He was also awarded top honours
in the Black Like Us competition in 2007. Many companies and
individuals have purchased Edward’s art, including Vox United in
the USA, the South African Embassy in Madagascar, Deutsche Bank,
the Johannesburg Metropolitan Council, Wright Rose-Innes, the
Development Bank of SA and the University of Johannesburg.
Edward is married to Bongiwe and they have a son and a daughter.
From an early age Makoba loved watching cartoons and used to
draw his favourite characters, including the Ninja Turtles and Tom &
Jerry. His father was a good artist but treated art as a hobby. It was
his grandmother who was the first person to encourage Makoba to
take his art seriously. He used to irritate his teachers by drawing in
class and so drew after school to avoid punishment.
When he was 13, he attended art classes at a local community centre
where Chris Molefe had a profound influence on his work. He later
attended workshops at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and completed
a two-year course at FUBA (Federated Union of Black Artists).
He joined Artist Proof Studio in 2004 where he received certificates
of excellence in his first and second years and was selected to
further his printmaking. He completed the third year professional
programme in 2007.
Bheki Mthethwa is a water-colourist born in 1980 in Mevamhlophe,
a rural area close to Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal.
As a boy he used to admire the portrait artists who sketched tourists
along the Durban beachfront. He bought his first sketch pad and
pencils at the age of 10 and produced his first self-portrait. A
stranger then advised him to go for training in Visual Arts at the BAT
(Bartel Arts Trust) Centre in Durban. Here the panel was impressed
with the quality of his work and he was selected to join the centre’s
programme for a year.
He later began working from home painting portraits and venturing
into signwriting as a means of supporting his mother and four
siblings. Later, he left for Johannesburg in hope of a better future. He
took classes at Creative Inner City Initiative (CICI) in Hillbrow and later
joined The Little Artist School. He is now one of the assistant teachers
there and sells his work both locally and abroad. He is also a member
of Artists Under The Sun and exhibits with them regularly.
Born in 1983 in Soweto, Moeketsi Moahloli was first introduced to the
world of art through reading graphic novels and watching animated
cartoons. In 2005, he enrolled in a multimedia course at the University
of Johannesburg, where he majored in 2D animation. Here he was also
exposed to many different forms of art, and made it his mission to
learn as much as he could about the visual arts, refining his own visual
and conceptual vocabulary which he expressed through his focus on
animation, graphic design, photography and film.
In 2010, Moahloli and his partner Paseka Moahloli established their
own graphic design company, called Black Bean Design, where he
works as an art director.
He was introduced to Edward Selematsela of The Little Artist School
in 2014 and soon after began painting. His first exhibition was with
The Little Artist School at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. He works
mostly with acrylic paint on portraits and landscapes where people
appear in the background.
78
79
Nditsheni Managa was born at Nzhelele, Limpopo in March 1982. He
later moved to Pretoria, but then fell in love with Johannesburg where
he has settled.
He joined The Little Artist School in 2005 where he learnt different art
techniques and, through hard work and perseverance, has became an
assistant teacher there. He also studied professional printmaking with
Artist Proof Studio for three years.
In 2014 he was a member of staff at ART Gallery on Milner. He has
exhibited at Deutsche Bank, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Black Like Us,
the Absa L’Atelier, the Dulcie Robinson Memorial Exhibition, Alice Art
Gallery, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Turbine Art Fair, Art
Beat Gallery and ArtZone pop-up gallery.

Christo started his career in food when he volunteered to cover for a
sick chef while working as a waiter at a holiday resort in Suffolk in the
UK. His natural talent for cooking soon made itself known and he moved
from trainee Commis Chef to Junior Chef de Partie in just six months.
Since then he’s held a senior position at Silver Hill Lodge in the
Drakensberg, worked luxury yachts in Florida, been the Bistro Chef at
The Plettenberg, a five-star Relais & Châteaux property in Plettenberg
Bay, and Sous Chef at Cape Royale Hotel’s ‘Bistro 1800°’.
His wide experience has culminated in his current position as Executive
Chef at Azure, where he initially apprenticed under former Executive
Chef Henrico Grobbelaar.
Christo placed second in the prestigious Sunday Times Young Chef of
VIRGIL Kahn
Indochine at
Delaire Graff Estate,
Stellenbosch / Western Cape
Virgil Kahn has been at Delaire Graff Estate since Indochine opened,
initially working as a Chef de Partie under former head chef Jonathan
Heath. Today he is Head Chef and has 20 people in his team, of whom
14 are chefs.
His career experience prior to Indochine included a valuable five-year
stint at The Westin Cape Town, where he completed a three-year
chef’s course and also had the opportunity to travel extensively. At the
One&Only Cape Town he spent time at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze, and
also six months at Nobu, where he learnt about fish, the intricacies
of sushi-making and the art of Asian marinating and seasoning –
experience that has proved to be invaluable in his current role.
As head chef of Indochine, Kahn wears two hats. First and foremost,
he is there to cater to every special request and dietary need of guests
checking into the 10 private lodges. Many of the guests are extremely
well travelled and accustomed to keeping their health and fitness
regimens on track, no matter where in the world they are. Indulgence
never goes out of fashion, however, and in the late afternoons, his
kitchen sends canapés – often clever teasers from the menu – to each
lodge, accompanied by a flute of chilled MCC bubbly.
Kahn is also the genius behind one of the best hotel breakfasts in the
country, served either in Indochine or set up privately in the lodges. It’s
a feast of locally sourced gourmet ingredients, including fresh fruits,
homemade granola, organic yoghurt, a selection of local charcuterie
and cheeses, freshly baked breads and pastries, as well as a menu of
breakfast dishes cooked to order. In fact, a Delaire Graff Lodges &
Spa breakfast encapsulates the local provenance, seasonal freshness,
and decadent surprise elements that underpin every aspect of this
dynamic young chef’s food philosophy.
malika van reenen
Signal at Cape Grace,
Cape Town / Western Cape
Despite being a hospitality industry veteran of 16 years, Malika van
Reenen still manages to ooze the enthusiasm of a junior chef who’s
just walked into her first kitchen. While her enthusiasm may be
youthful and infectious, as the award-winning Executive Chef of the
Cape Grace’s Signal Restaurant, her skill is inarguably polished.
After concluding her culinary studies in 1998, Malika wasted little
time getting herself noticed when she was selected to design a
proudly South African menu for the Grand Hotel ‘Les Trois Rois’ in
Basel, Switzerland. Similar honours followed when she was asked
to conceptualise yet another South African-focused menu for the
premier Meikles Hotel in Harare.
Malika attributes her skill of creating wholly South African dishes to
her Cape Malay roots. Her fascination with the innumerable spices
and flavours of traditional Cape Malay cuisine, coupled with her
extensive training in modern techniques, has seen her present some
truly innovative dishes to diners at Signal over the past five years.
Gregory Czarnecki
Waterkloof Restaurant,
Somerset West / Western Cape
Fuelled by a wealth of experience garnered in some of the finest
Michelin-starred restaurants in France, Grégory Czarnecki lends his
fine-dining flair to the Cape Winelands as the Executive Chef of the
signature restaurant at Waterkloof Estate in the Helderberg.
Born and bred in Burgundy, his cooking style remains loyal to his
French roots and the lessons learnt from his mentor, 3-star Michelin
Chef Alain Senderens. His food at Waterkloof’s gorgeously appointed
gourmet hotspot is enriched by fresh inspiration from the restaurant’s
spectacular setting, perched high on the slopes of the Schapenberg
with an eagle’s-eye view over False Bay.
Blessed with a natural ability to turn classic recipes and the finest
quality, local and seasonal produce into an unsurpassed dining
experience fit for discerning palates, his career guest list attests to his
high culinary standards. Tony Blair, Nicolas Sarkozy, Paul McCartney
and Woody Allen are but a few of the high-profile personalities for
whom he cooked while still in France. His French culinary career saw
him working exclusively in the Parisian kitchens of Michelin-rated
restaurants, including the 2-star Restaurant Senderens, the 3-star
Relais & Châteaux Restaurant Lucas Carton and the 1-star Pergolèse.
Other highlights of his international experience include the opening,
recipe design and menu conceptualisation for leading restaurants in
Brussels, Geneva and Lyon.
“I draw inspiration from people who not only love good food and
wine but also appreciate wine and food pairings; guests who seek
the best local seasonal produce to complement wine with a naturalist
approach,” says Grégory, who shares his passion with his staff to
achieve the ultimate combination of textures, taste and flavour with
each meal they serve.
Rudi liebenberg
Planet Restaurant at Belmond
Mount Nelson Hotel,
Cape Town / Western Cape
Award-winning Executive Chef, Rudi Liebenberg commands one of
South Africa’s oldest and finest hotels – Belmond Mount Nelson – and
is the inspired guiding hand behind Planet, its scintillating and stylish
restaurant.
“My aim has always been to create a clear and unique culinary identity
for the Grande Dame which is informed and inspired by modern tastes
but has its roots planted firmly in her rich heritage,” Rudi says.
Rudi’s focus is on natural ingredients and preferred sustainable
farming practices, and he believes in building trust and relationships
with choice suppliers. “The foundation of my process starts with
respect – respect for the ingredients, respect for the end-product
and respect for the guests,” he says. “We want to create a transparent
process from supplier to plate.”
marthinus ferreira
DW eleven-13,
Johannesburg / Gauteng
Chef patron of DW eleven-13 in Johannesburg, Marthinus Ferreira is a
man who draws on a wealth of experience garnered from working in
some of the finest UK dining destinations, among these the Riverside
Brasserie, The Fat Duck, The Hinds Head and Gordon Ramsay’s
Boxwood Cafe.
Whether teamed with Michelin-starred masters or expanding culinary
appreciation on home soil, there is dedication and vision deeply
entwined in all that Marthinus does. Since 2010, DW eleven-13 has
earned Eat Out Top 10 awards for three consecutive years. In 2012 it
received a three-star Roussouw Restaurant Guide rating as well as a
Diners Club Platinum award for its wine list.
Marthinus’ dishes provide patrons with an experience, not just a meal
and he challenges them to really “eat out of the box”. This is not more
evident than at The Grazing Room, an extension of DW eleven-13,
where tapas-style dishes change on a regular basis in order to keep
the menu dynamic.
Pierneef à La Motte
at La Motte Wine Estate,
Franschhoek / Western Cape
Chef de Cuisine Michelle Theron has been with Pierneef à La Motte since
it opened in 2010. Passionate about traditional food and sustainable
sourcing, she’s played an integral part in the development of the
Franschhoek restaurant’s regional recipes and its Cape Winelands
Cuisine cookbook.
Michelle’s interest in all things culinary started as a young girl
growing up in a typical South African home where daily activities were
planned around meal times and produce came from the back garden.
Her curiosity was fuelled by culinary literature and her admiration for
chefs such as Margot Janse, Clare Smythe and Elena Arzak.
After her culinary studies, Michelle cooked at various restaurants in
the Winelands as well as in Cape Town, all the experience of which
has contributed to her canny ability to express traditional flavours in
a modern and on-trend way.
Scot Kirton
La Colombe at Silvermist,
Constantia / Western Cape
Scot Kirton entered the kitchen at Haute Cabrière restaurant in
Franschhoek in 2001 with no training and quickly worked his way
up to Sous Chef over a period of four years. In 2006 he embarked
on a stint at the acclaimed Savoy Grill in London, one of Gordon
Ramsay’s restaurants, where he did a two-year crash course in the
art of blasphemy and ‘the perfect plate’.
At the end of 2007, Scot returned to South Africa where he joined
Luke Dale-Roberts as Sous Chef at La Colombe. From there he moved
to the neighbouring River Café, taking up the position of head chef
at this iconic Constantia eatery. In 2010, he returned to La Colombe,
following in the footsteps of esteemed chefs Franck Dangereux and
Luke Dale-Roberts by becoming its Head Chef.
La Colombe recently moved to Silvermist Organic Wine Estate at the
top of Constantia Nek, but it remains an evergreen favourite. The
new venue, with its sweeping views and very own organic gardens,
provides the perfect environment for Scot to weave his magic.
Experience and humility has taught him to celebrate the best
seasonal ingredients and reveal clean, balanced flavours on the
plate. “You have to cook from your heart and believe in the dish
you are creating. Anything is possible, and this is the philosophy we
celebrate at La Colombe,” he says.
Chantel Dartnall is one of South Africa’s most highly regarded chefs
and is the winner of the 2014 Eat Out San Pellegrino Chef of the Year
Award, a title she first won in 2009.
Chantel combines her classical French training with her love of
nature and is well known for creating the art of nature on a plate
with delightful botanical dishes. She draws her inspiration from her
travels as well as from the Francolin Conservancy which surrounds
Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient. She is passionate about using
organic and seasonal produce and brings an innovative approach
to food preparation and presentation. She has always embraced her
femininity and feels that it is important for chefs to present their
true personality to their guests with what they present on a plate.
Mosaic is known for its impressive eight-course Grande Dégustation
menu as well as its six-course Discovery Dégustation that changes
four times a year to reflect the seasons. Be sure to pop into the
kitchen as Chef Chantel is always in attendance to meet guests when
the restaurant is open.
Chris erasmus
Foliage,
Franschhoek / Western Cape
Chris Erasmus’s love for food and organic produce began as a boy
growing up in the Karoo. One of four children raised by a single
mother, Chris would pitch in to help prepare meals. He was taught by
his mother how to make everything himself – from preserving jams
and butchering meat to making jellies, biltong and tripe.
After leaving home Chris flirted with chemical engineering and
dentistry while working part-time in bars and restaurants – until he
decided he should pursue his dream and study to become a chef.
After graduating from the Elsa van der Nest Culinary Academy, Chris
worked at Cape Grace under Chef Craig Cormack before doing his
in-service training at the former Five Flies restaurant in Cape Town.
Chris then left South Africa for the UK, where he met Chef Shane
Osborn, who was to become his culinary mentor. Shane taught Chris
urgency, precision and skill, and also allowed him room to explore his
interest in chemistry and the cooking techniques and processes used
in the fast-paced kitchen.
On his return to South Africa, Chris took on the position of Executive
Chef at the new Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant, where his culinary
flair put it on the Eat Out Top 10 Restaurants list in 2013. In 2014 he
opened his own restaurant in Franschhoek, called Foliage, where he
marries his passion for foraging wild ingredients with heritage food.
Stanford / Western Cape
When Jürgen Schneider opened his first restaurant in Germany, it
was awarded a Michelin star within 10 months. Food lovers from
Berlin regularly braved a 160km drive over gravel roads for the
opportunity to enjoy the food at his out-of-the-way venue.
Before bringing his culinary talents to South Africa in 2013, this
accomplished and adventurous chef held a Michelin star for an
uninterrupted 18 years.
He and his wife Susanne opened Springfontein Eats on a wine
farm outside Stanford in October 2013, and it has quickly become
a landmark attraction in the small Overberg town. A keen forager,
often to be found out on his mountain bike looking for mushrooms
and other edible plants, Springfontein Eats’ daily-changing menu
features his foraged ingredients as well as vegetables from the
estate gardens.
Gregory Mutambe was born in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands in 1984
and was originally meant to become an accountant like his father.
While tutoring maths on a part-time basis, Gregory was offered a job
at the Mukuyu Winery in Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland East region. He
accepted and the rest, as they say, is history.
He moved to South Africa to pursue his dream of developing a career
in the wine industry, graduating with a Diploma in Wine from the
Cape Wine Academy in Gauteng.
In May 2010 Gregory moved to Cape Town where he worked as a
sommelier at the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands for a year before moving
to The Twelve Apostles where he now serves as Head Sommelier.
He is considered one of South Africa’s most talented young wine
connoisseurs and is a sought-after wine selection panellist, working
on SAA’s First and Business Class Winelist and Platter’s Wine Guide.
The renowned ex-sommelier of the award-winning Rust en Vrede
Wine Estate and Restaurant, Neil Grant is the co-founder and owner
of Burrata Restaurant. Situated in Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill,
which has become a food destination of note within the city, Burrata
offers a modern take on contemporary Italian cuisine.
After graduating, Grant spent seven years in San Francisco where
he earned his certification as a sommelier in 2005 and worked with
the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant, which was voted the Best Wine
Merchant in the USA by Food & Wine magazine. Once back in South
Africa in 2006, Neil helped build Rust en Vrede’s wine profile with
chef David Higgs. Within three years, the wine estate had won a slew
of accolades. Neil left Rust en Vrede in 2011 and opened Burrato
with his business partner Barry Engelbrecht in March 2012.
Neil is Chairman of the South African Sommeliers Association and
the wine and hospitality industries. After finishing his studies, he
The ‘Young Chef Award’ is an opportunity for every young chef who
wants to make a name for him- or herself to do exactly that. The aim
of the award is to find talented young people, give them opportunities,
inspire them and help them to develop their skills.
‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’ invited 75 culinary establishments
(restaurants, hotels, lodges, schools) from across South Africa to
encourage their rising stars to participate in this competition.
Anand Bhana, Demi Chef de Partie
Hartford House, Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal
Ludwig van Biljon, Demi Chef de Partie
Delaire Graff Estate, Indochine Restaurant, Stellenbosch
Marisa Botes, Pastry Chef de Partie
La Motte, Pierneef à la Motte Restaurant, Franschhoek
To enter, the young chefs needed to create an original, innovative
canapé that could be served as a culinary highlight at the start of the
‘Chefs who share – the ART of giving’ charity gala. Entrants needed
to send in a colour photograph of the canapé as well as a full recipe,
including precise measurements and food costs for 100 pieces, and a
suggested presentation.
A panel of top chefs and experienced foodies was put together to
assess the canapés submitted and select seven young chefs as
competition finalists. The judging panel comprised:
• Tracey Younghusband, private chef and food consultant
• Tessa Purdon, Editor of Food24
• Lentswe Bhengu, local ambassador of the ‘Young Chef Award’, chef
and TV personality
• Naz Moosa, celebrity cook of www.zira.co.za
• Carianne Wilkinson, Vice Principal of Silwood School of Cookery
• Florian Gast, Editorial Director of Opulent Living Magazine and cofounder
of ‘Chefs who share’.
The seven finalists were invited to attend the ‘Chefs who share’ gala
evening and present their canapés to guests. They were also given the
unique opportunity to cook alongside 14 of South Africa’s best chefs
at this prestigious culinary event.
The seven 2015 Young Chef Award finalists who are participating in
the ‘Chefs who share’ gala evening are:
Germaine Esau, Sous Chef
Majeka House, Makaron Restaurant, Stellenbosch
Jamie-lee Saunders, Commis Chef
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Red Indigo Restaurant, Hermanus
Edna Visser, Commis Chef
The Restaurant at Waterkloof Wines, Somerset West
Etienne Wessels, Chef de Partie
Grande Roche Hotel, Bosman’s Restaurant, Paarl
At the end of the ‘Chefs who share’ gala evening, the 14 participating
chefs and international patron Reto Mathis will vote for the overall
winner of the ‘Young Chef Award’ 2015.
This prestigious award comes with a trip to Europe (with a flight sponsored
by Swiss International Air Lines), and the chance to cook in a Michelinstarred
restaurant for a few days. The executive chef of the restaurant
will spend time with the winner and share personal tricks and advice.
Additionally, the winning Young Chef will be invited by Moët & Chandon
to visit its headquarters in Épernay, in the heart of the Champagne
region in France and present him or her with the opportunity to
participate in a workshop with a member of the Moët & Chandon
winemaking committee and a resident chef.
Lentswe Bhengu has been passionate about food ever since he was a
child growing up in KwaZulu-Natal. After five years in the investment
finance industry, he exchanged his suit and tie for a chef’s jacket in
2010 when he enrolled at The Culinary Academy in the Cape Winelands.
It was a dream come true to graduate as a professional chef and work
at fine-dining restaurants like the Savoy Cabbage, The Roundhouse
and Saucisse Boutique Deli in Cape Town.
Lentswe and a friend started Green Zebra Productions, a local film and
media production house that produces Africa on a Plate, a food show
hosted by Lentswe for The Africa Channel. The show has taken him
around South Africa and to countries such as Tanzania and Nigeria to
experience the unique flavours and textures of African cuisine.
“What I’ve learned along my food journey – both from the top chefs at
the restaurants where I worked and from the many cooks around Africa
who have shared their traditional recipes on my show – has proved
invaluable,” he says. “There’s nothing like a good mentor to inspire you
and help you on your culinary path. I’m proud to be associated with the
‘Young Chef Award’, which is a wonderful opportunity for South Africa’s
rising culinary talent to put up their hand and get noticed. Not only will
their winning canapé be served to high-profile guests, but they’ll get
to learn so much from the 14 acclaimed chefs who participate in the
charity event. What a chance to learn and grow your talent!”
As the founder and head of Mathis Food Affairs, Reto captains a
number of celebrated restaurants in his home country. They’re situated
in the St Moritz mountain resort of Corviglia and specialise in refined
yet traditional Swiss cuisine. La Marmite, his acclaimed gourmet
restaurant, is famous for its truffle and caviar specialities, and for
being the highest dining establishment in Europe at a staggering 2 486
metres. Reto and his team have been spoiling skiers, hikers, families
and gourmet fans with various culinary offerings for almost 22 years
and pride themselves on their passionate creativity, their quality and
warm hospitality, as well as their amazing mountain views.
Reto is also a brand ambassador for Swiss International Air Lines,
where he likes to think he is taking Swiss cuisine to new heights.
“Certainly cooking for the airline brings me closer to heaven than any
of my other restaurants!” he says.
Reto has helped mentor the seven young chef finalists during their
stay in Cape Town and, together with the 14 chefs participating in the
event, will vote for the overall winner of the ‘Young Chef Award’ 2015.
present of recognition
2015: keith calder
Coming together under a
symbol of Africa
‘Chefs who share - the ART of giving’ would not be possible without
the fabulous chefs and sommeliers who contribute their valuable time
to this worthy cause, plus put their energy, effort and often even their
own money towards the project. We can’t thank them enough!
When we started ‘Chefs who Share’ we decided to create a memorable
present that would not only acknowledge the participation of each
chef and sommelier in the event, but would also symbolise the joint
effort that is necessary to achieve greater things.
In 2013, acclaimed ceramist Astrid Dahl created small replicas of a
flower that she specifically designed for ‘Chefs who share’, with four
parts of a pod creating a beautiful symbol of working together. In 2014,
we decided on an artwork from Lionel Smit featuring interlinked
hands, a symbol of how it takes many hands to be strong.
This year acclaimed Cape Town-based sculptor Keith Calder has crafted
a tree, a symbol of beauty, strength and wisdom – and an icon of the
African plains. In the bush, a tree serves as a spiritual meeting place,
providing a shelter where people can come together to plan for a better
future. Crafted in Calder’s distinctive abstract, almost futuristic style,
the many layers that make up this beautiful piece further symbolise
the many different elements that come together to create ‘Chefs who
share – the ART of giving’.
