SCHOOL<br />

Senior Mixed Touch Team<br />

Congratulations to our mixed touch<br />

team which won the Secondary <strong>School</strong>s<br />

National tournament held in Palmerston<br />

North in December. The team won 8 out<br />

of 8 games. The title is a fi rst for <strong>St</strong><br />

Peter’s in Touch!<br />

In a well orchestrated build up led<br />

purposefully by Head Coach, Crystal<br />

Kaua and overseen by Touch Convenor<br />

and Assistant Coach Leanne Walker,<br />

these two women were quietly confi dent<br />

heading into the tournament. After pre<br />

tournament games against Macleans<br />

College, Morrinsville, Trident and<br />

Matamata, the development of the<br />

team was evident and the ability and<br />

cohesiveness of this squad of players<br />

were strengthening by the week.<br />

The team consisted of Kieran Parker and<br />

Caitlin Finnegan-Ramanui (Co-captains),<br />

Wharenui Hawera, Brittany Coates and<br />

Chanelle Rata-Makene (current New<br />

Zealand Under 17 representatives),<br />

A very warm welcome to the 2011 school year.<br />

As we celebrate our 75th year this year, we can refl ect on how one man’s dream has<br />

developed since the <strong>School</strong>’s foundation in 1936.<br />

On 22 February, we celebrate the actual day of the offi cial opening and this will be<br />

marked at a full school assembly. Our offi cial celebration will be held over the weekend<br />

11-13 March and details of this are available on our website, or via our Development<br />

Manager, Di Baker.<br />

We look forward to another successful year for our students and staff.<br />

100% Pass rate for International<br />

Baccalaureate (I.B.) Diploma<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents<br />

The fi rst cohort of the International<br />

Baccalaureate Diplomas sat their exams<br />

in 2010. All 34 I.B. students gained<br />

their I.B. Diplomas giving <strong>St</strong> Peter’s<br />

<strong>School</strong> a 100% pass rate with their<br />

fi rst group of I.B. students. This is an<br />

outstanding result and we can all be<br />

very proud.<br />

• Thomas Libeau 41/45<br />

• Timothy Lamusse 40/45<br />

• Dijon Hoogeveen 40/45<br />

These grades place them in the top<br />

11.99% of I.B. students in the world.<br />

The average grade at <strong>St</strong> Peter’s of 32.4<br />

was particularly pleasing. The world<br />

average was 30.73 and the world pass<br />

rate was 80.59%.<br />

<strong>St</strong>udents tackled the challenging<br />

two year Diploma programme with<br />

enthusiasm and commitment. They<br />

studied six subjects, completed a 4000<br />

word extended essay, were involved in<br />

over 150 hours of creativity, action and<br />

service and completed a course in the<br />

Theory of Knowledge.<br />

NCEA and Scholarship<br />

NCEA results are being collated and will be available early February.<br />

Scholarship results are published mid-February.<br />

100% Pass rate for Year 11 IGCSE Mathematics<br />

We are delighted to advise of a 100% pass rate for the 52 candidates who sat the<br />

University of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics examinations in November, 2010. In total<br />

we had:<br />

1 A+ grade (90% - 100%) - Jimmy Huang with a mark of 93%<br />

12 A grade (80% - 89%)<br />

23 B grade (70% - 79%)<br />

14 C grade (60% - 69%)<br />

2 D grade (50% – 59%).<br />

Marks ranged from 53% - 93%, with the median 74%. These results were by our B<br />

and C sets and we congratulate the students and their teachers, Mr and Mrs Kennedy.<br />

Total results for 2010 (May and November) were:<br />

and the median mark for this group was 78%.<br />

Primary Northern Districts Tournament, Hamilton<br />

Aidan Crayton was selected to represent Waikato Valley South Cricket Team in this<br />

tournament, 29 – 30 November and 1 December<br />

Matthew Whitley is also competing in this tournament as the Captain of the Hamilton<br />

Junior Cricket Team.<br />

Northern Districts (Junior – Under 15) Playoffs Tournament<br />

The following students competed in the December tournament:<br />

Henry Crayton – Captain of the 1st team, Waikato Valley South, and selected for<br />

Northern Districts Under 16 Development team<br />

In the 3rd placed Waikato Valley Plains team was Timothy Seifert, Nathan Tweedy<br />

and Joshua Oakley, with Timothy selected for the Northern Districts Under 16 Premier<br />

1st XI Cricket Tour to Australia<br />

In November last year 14 players and<br />

coaching staff set out for a two week<br />

tour of Queensland. The tour was<br />

affected by the fl oods throughout the<br />

state of Queensland but six games<br />

were started resulting in four wins, a<br />

loss and one match abandoned.<br />

Special mention must go to the<br />

three Year 13 players, Captain Jarrod<br />

Mongston, Benjamin Kittlety and<br />

Michael Young who all stood up and<br />

performed well on their fi nal school<br />

tour. A wonderful fi nal innings was<br />

played by Captain Jarrod Mongston<br />

who led the team superbly and scored a<br />

century in his last match for the school.<br />

Australian Open Junior <strong>St</strong>ar!<br />

Former student Jaden Grinter competed in the Australian Junior Open in Melbourne<br />

after qualifying last week. He won his fi rst round match on Sunday, 23 January 6-3 6-2<br />

beating world junior number 18 Dimirtri Bretting from Switzerland. Jaden, ranked 113<br />

in the world, also won his fi rst round doubles match with partner Jeson Patrombon from<br />

the Philippines. He lost in the second round.<br />

Rowing<br />

Over the school holidays a group of senior rowers returned to training early and competed<br />

at the North Island Club Champs at Lake Karapiro. After some great racing the rowers<br />

picked up the following medals:<br />

Silver Club Men’s 4x (Matthew Dunham, Matthew Dawkins, Ashton Moorhead and<br />

Alexander Mudford)<br />

Silver Club Women’s 4+ (Jessica Ria, Georgia Perry, Kayla Jans, Emily Munro<br />

It was the fi rst time that the boys had found themselves on the podium, so it was a great<br />

way to start the new season of racing.<br />

Waikato Senior Championships<br />

The Team of 22 swimmers, 13 years<br />

and over from the academy attended<br />

the Waikato Senior Championships held<br />

raced over 2 days in the Heat / Final<br />

program in Hamilton on Friday, 14 and<br />

Saturday, 15 January. The meet was part<br />

of the swimmers preparation towards<br />

the National Age Group Championships.<br />

The team performed well with 42%<br />

personal best times.<br />

This meet was also the Waikato Trophy<br />

meet and swimmers were eligible to<br />

win trophies in most 100m events.<br />

Unoffi cially the <strong>St</strong> Peter’s team claimed<br />

Waikato swimming held the New<br />

Zealand Junior Time Trail after the fourth<br />

session. Congratulations to Hannah<br />

Blackwood who has qualifi ed for the 50m<br />

Backstroke bringing our swimmers in<br />

the New Zealand Junior Team to seven.<br />

Junior Waikato Championships<br />

The <strong>St</strong> Peter’s Junior Academy fi nished<br />

their season with a big bang at Waikato<br />

Junior Championships held on Saturday,<br />

18 and Sunday, 19 December. 47 <strong>St</strong><br />

Peter’s juniors attended this meet. The<br />

team had great personal best times.<br />

Individual swimmers achieved National<br />

standard swims. The relay performances<br />

were taken away by the <strong>St</strong> Peter’s 12<br />

years and under girls, who dominated<br />

the fi eld in both Freestyle and Medley<br />

relays.<br />

The coaching team could not be more<br />

proud of the junior squad.<br />

Golf Academy<br />

2011 is shaping up to be another great year at the Golf Academy. We ended the year<br />

on a high note with our visiting Chinese students enjoying playing with some of our<br />

academy students at ‘The Lakes’ Golf course in Pauanui and at Formosa, Auckland<br />

Country Club. There were some great results over the Christmas period from some<br />

of our Academy students.<br />

A few of the outstanding performers were: Matthew Morris won the Under 15 2010<br />

<strong>St</strong>eve Williams Foundation Junior Championship, played at Inglewood Golf Club and<br />

Compton Pikari came 4th in the 2011 Danny Lee Springfi eld Open.<br />

In the North Island Age Group Championship played at the Hamilton Golf Club:<br />

• Troy Scott – 7th in the Under 19 Boys<br />

• Compton Pikari – 6th in the Under 17’s<br />

• Matthew Adams – 23rd<br />

• <strong>St</strong>even Kuggeleijn – 30th.<br />

• Matthew Morris – 5th in the Under 15s<br />

• Sam Vincent – 13th<br />

• Thomas Coles – 15th.<br />

We are running another of our very successful ‘Introduction to Golf’ course in Term<br />

One. It is open to any <strong>St</strong> Peter’s school student who is interested in golf. This course<br />

starts in week fi ve and runs for six weeks at the cost of $325. It is a great way for<br />

the students to see if they like golf and want to progress and continue it to another<br />

level. There are limited places.<br />

Performing Arts – Term 1, 2011<br />

The Performing Arts Faculty is well underway for the year.<br />

‘My Fair Lady’ – <strong>School</strong> Production<br />

The auditions have been completed and the cast list<br />

confi rmed. Rehearsals begin in Week 2. There are still<br />

opportunities for students to be involved in the Production<br />

including backstage, lighting, hair and makeup. <strong>St</strong>udents can<br />

express their interest in joining these teams by seeing Mrs<br />

McIntyre or Mrs McMurray. <strong>St</strong>udents will be invited to join the<br />

Production Orchestra by Musical Director Ms Brown.<br />

Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment. A ticket<br />

booking sheet was included in the information pack sent out<br />

in December and it is also available on the website. You may fax, mail or return it to the<br />

school reception or email your order to tickets@stpeters.school.nz You may also contact<br />

Mrs McMurray, Performing Arts Administrator on (07) 827 9869. Remember, fi rst in best<br />

Musical Tuition<br />

The Performing Arts Faculty has 22 music tutors offering tuition in many instruments<br />

(these are listed in the Information Book). We have 350 students signed up for<br />

instrumental tuition for 2011, with places still places available for ALL instruments.<br />

Forms can be obtained from Mrs McMurray, Performing Arts Administrator.<br />

Cultural Groups<br />

Information regarding signing up for Cultural Groups will be advertised through the<br />

Daily Notices. The Information Book will give students/parents details about the<br />

cultural groups available and a brief description. Dance Troupes – see the fl yer attached<br />

regarding signing up for one of our four dance troupes.<br />

<strong>St</strong>ars Concert<br />

This event is on the calendar for Week 11. This is an opportunity for the students to<br />

perform their talents in front of many of their peers. Entry forms will be available closer<br />

to this event. Please note that this is an in-House event which is not open to the public/<br />

parents.<br />

STP Beatz Hip Hop Tuesdays 3:30pm-4:30pm<br />

STP Beatz is a hip hop dance group where Y9-13 students will learn a series of exercises (including<br />

arm combinations, floorwork, beat/rhythm exercises, footwork, isolations, amalgamations and a<br />

dance) from the Broken Beat Hip Hop Syllabus and sit an examination in Term 3/4 of this year.<br />

Revolutionize Wednesdays 3:30pm-4:30pm<br />

Revolutionize is a fun Dance troupe that aims to provide Y7-8 students with the opportunity to<br />

attend dance classes, learn dances, perform at school based events, and to choreograph some of<br />

their own dances.<br />

Diamonds Cheerleading Thursdays 3:30pm-4:30pm<br />

The cheerleading squad learns American style cheerleading - arm motions, jump technique,<br />

safe stunting, cheers, chants, tumbles and introduces basic dance elements needed to begin the<br />

development of a well-rounded cheerleader. For Y9-13s.<br />

Expressions Contemporary Thursdays 3:30pm-4:30pm<br />

Expressions is a Contemporary Dance troupe for Y9-13 students. Classes include contemporary<br />

dance technique and fun opportunities for creativity, alongside enhancing body awareness,<br />

functional alignment, partnering, and safe dance practice.<br />
