Leo Heremans
Leo Heremans,
the eye for perfection…
By far the most popular pigeon strain in the world is
that of Leo Heremans because of the way it dominates
all over the world. Leo applied the eye for perfection
he developed as diamond cutter onto pigeon racing
and created the new world strain. Very reliable,
with a rough base that was refined year after year
and eventually turned out to become the best short
and middle distance pigeon in the world. A story of
survival … of dedication … of talent … of misfortune
… but above all, of great success.
Shortly after the Second World War, a small farm in the town of
Vorselaar was the location of the birth of Leo Heremans in 1947,
as the youngest child of six, with four older brothers and one
sister. Circumstances must have been miserable in Leo’s younger
years. His father passed away when Leo was just six months
old, leaving the family with debts and his mother and older
brothers to find a way to make a living. Just two cows were their
source of income and in order to pay for the hospital bills even
these two had to be sold. This was a period that required a great
deal of effort to survive for the entire family. However Leo, the
youngest of the family,
was protected from
their troubles and never
experienced the first
years of his life as being
as poor as they were.
Leo Heremans grew
up in a period that
required a great deal
of effort to survive
for the entire family
It characterized the
Heremans family
that - bit by bit - hard
labour enabled them
to improve their living
standards. Before Leo’s tenth birthday the farm of Heremans
ensured a steady income, not much but enough for the family to
leave poverty behind. Leo’s oldest brother Louis, 17 years older,
became Leo’s second father and took him by the hand during
his youth. It was a youth where sports played an important role
for the pigeon legend to be. Leo was extremely athletic and one
of the great talents in soccer of ‘Ons Genoegen Vorselaar’. At
3
Leo’s daughter Tamara
4
the age of sixteen Leo was asked to play for the first team and as
goalkeeper he became the youngest A-team player. However,
when his team mates went to the pub after the match to celebrate
a victory, Leo remained in the bus because he had no money to
pay for drinks. As a man of honour Leo couldn’t accept that and
so he stopped playing football.
But then Leo had already invested in his career. At the age of 12,
brother Louis took Leo with him to help him in his profession as
electrician. Leo hated it but wanted to help the family that was so
good to him. He never complained about it to his brother. Louis
saw Leo’s ability to learn fast and advised him to search for a job
as diamond cutter. The province of Antwerp was famous for the
diamond business and this was the place to earn money and get
a better life, Louis said. This was the piece of advice that would
influence Leo’s life forever.
The eye for perfection
Turning 14, Leo closed the door of his school behind him for
good and walked straight to René De Cnodder, a very renowned
diamond cutter and the best of Vorselaar. René looked Leo in the
eye and saw that he had the will to learn. “Come back Monday,
son,” René said. “I’ll teach you the profession.” Leo proved to
be a very quick student and it did not take René De Cnodder
long to promote Leo to be his foreman. He recognised a special
eye for quality and great skills to make something valuable from
something rough, an eye for perfection. Within a few years’ time
Leo had become the most important employee of De Cnodder’s
diamond company. At just 16 years of age, Leo had to instruct the
others in what to do, often employees being almost twice his age.
Leo’s natural leadership helped him fulfil this responsible job
and he became the number one man to teach new students the art
of cutting diamonds.
Louis saw
Leo's ability to
learn fast and
advised him
to find a job
as a diamond
cutter
Leo lived for his work and never
spent much time in bars or
dancings. Cycling with his friends
had always played an important
role in Leo’s social life. Even
today, he and his old friends still
ride their bikes together every
week, a sign of loyalty that plays
such an important role in Leo
Heremans’ life. Loyalty to his
family, his friends and his wife
Chris, who he met when he was
19 years old. Leo was never a
womanizer but meeting Chris was
love at first sight. Shortly after
their marriage in 1969 they lived
in the official residence of De Cnodder Diamonds where Leo was
chief and the man to run the business.
Leo’s life became more and more how he wished it to be.
The family of Heremans always helped each other out. His
brothers helped him build his house in 1971, and in 1973 and
1975 daughters Tamara and Natascha were born. Leo was very
happy: He had a loving wife, two beautiful daughters, his own
house and a great job. What more to ask for? However, shortly
after this, his life made an unexpected turn, all caused by caring
daughters and a wounded racing pigeon.
A matter of destiny
It must have been late 1977 when a traditional scene in the
Heremans family life was interrupted. Father Leo, mother
Chris and daughters Tamara and Natascha were having dinner
when both daughters were distracted by a pigeon sitting on a
stepladder. Leo caught him and the pigeon appeared to have a
5
oken leg. The cage of the canary that had just recently passed
away became the new home for the pigeon and Tamara and
Natascha took care of it. As a fanatical fisherman, Leo had been
visiting several pigeon fanciers because pigeon droppings are an
important ingredient in fish food. As a teenager, Leo had homed
some fancy pigeons and canaries and he therefore supported his
daughters in homing this one pigeon. When they asked for more,
Leo took them to the pigeon market and bought some more; he
housed them in the ventilation area of the basement.
“Get rid of
these pigeons
and build a
decent loft,
then I’ll help
you on your way”
Not much later, pigeon fancier
Paul Huysmans (later husband
of Marina Van De Velde,
responsible for their success
in pigeon racing) came to help
Leo mend the windows in his
kitchen. Paul heard some noise
and said: “Leo, I hear pigeons.
You never told me you had
pigeons. Where do you house
them?” When Leo told him
where he housed them, the two
had a good laugh. Paul was just
moving at the time and said
goodbye to pigeon racing. He
offered Leo his two best pigeons
and these two came to reinforce the pigeons bought on the
market. Half of the henhouse was made into a new home for the
now 8 pigeons and Leo asked his neighbour Louis Claes, a great
champion in Vorselaar at the time and renowned for his skills in
judging pigeons, to come and check if his pigeons were of any
quality. When Louis walked into the loft and one of the pigeons
produced droppings as thin as water, Louis said: “I’d better come
back when you’ve built a decent loft and got rid of these pigeons.
Do that and I’ll help you on your way.”
Leo was than already infected with the pigeon bug and built a
wooden garden loft for breeders in the lower sections and racers
in the upper section. Only the two Paul Huysmans pigeons
remained and Louis Claes joined Leo at the famous pigeon
market in Lier to search for pigeons. Leo bred from his new
team and in 1978 he made his debut as a pigeon fancier. Often
he just basketed one youngster but this one, direct from the best
Huysmans breeding hen, won 14 prize cards as a youngster. Leo
felt like the emperor of Rome. From Louis Claes he purchased a
breeding pair. The first two youngsters he bred from them were
two dark pigeons since Louis had many dark pigeons. On many
occasions, Leo had his ‘dark horses’ home before Louis clocked
his and so a healthy rivalry started. Louis had taken Leo by the
hand in pigeon racing, just like René De Cnodder had done in
diamonds and again Leo showed he was a quick learner. In
1979 he was already Noyon champion with yearlings, beating
around 250 fanciers. This was the herald of something extremely
impressing.
Heremans-Mols
Even though Leo performed very well in those days, fun was the
keyword in his career as a pigeon fancier. Leo worked long and
hard, so in taking care of the pigeons he was partly dependent
on the help of his wife Chris. Her efforts were enormous and
together they did the job. Leo’s career in diamonds, however,
kept on developing and he had less and less time to enter the
lofts so all the work fell on Chris’ shoulders. That was really
not the meaning of homing pigeons so Leo decided to approach
Marcel Mols for the daily care of the pigeons. Marcel was the
former world champion breeding canaries and a true social
figure. For many years at the fair in Vorselaar he went to Leo
after some drinks and said: “If I had your pigeons, I would
dominate in Antwerp.” Leo laughed but saw Marcel was eager
to make his words come true. He said: “You are the fancier and
7
“You’ll be the
fancier and I’ll
get the pigeons
to reach the top”
I will buy pigeons until we
reach the top.” In late 1985 the
partnership of Heremans-Mols
made its entrance in pigeon
racing.
Leo made a name for himself
in those days visiting public
auctions of the best regional
fanciers and always buying the
stars of the auction, or direct children of them. “In my opinion
only the best could produce the best,” Leo says, but it took a
while before Leo’s investments were rewarded. Marcel found out
racing pigeons was quite different from breeding canaries and it
took him a while to get the skills required for winning. Over the
years Marcel developed more and more into a fine fancier. The
total colony of Staf Van Den Bempt was sold in 1988, 25 years
overall champion of Vorselaar and by far one of the best short
8
The miraculous history of Goede Witpen
Directly after his purchase of the best Staf Van Den Bempt
pigeons, Leo paired the best Van Den Bempt racer (The 024)
x his founding breeder. The first two youngsters he weaned
from them he kept for breeding. Young fancier Tuur Wellens
came riding by one day and Leo wanted to help him on his
way. “Take this blue cock,” he said, and Tuur went home
with one of the two first born youngsters from The 024. The
other one bred 1st prize winners for Heremans-Mols and Leo
was therefore surprised when Tuur Wellens called him two
years later. “That blue one is no good for me. Do you want
it back or should I kill it,” Tuur said. Leo asked him three
times to reconsider his decision since his nest brother was a
top breeder. Tuur was adamant and Leo went to get the blue
cock back. He named him Tuur and from his first nest Tuur
bred BE93-6581505 Goede Witpen, with 18 x 1st prize, and
grandchildren such as Wonderaske and Samson, the best
pigeon Leo Heremans ever had.
and middle distance fanciers of Belgium ever. Leo purchased all
the best Van Den Bempt pigeons and that investment was the
best thing he ever did. These top lines bred amongst others his
Goede Witpen, 18 x 1st prize winner and founding cock of the
strain Leo Heremans.
Since 1993 Leo himself spent more and more time in the lofts
and together with a strong quality breeding base it meant the
breakthrough of Heremans-Mols. Both Leo and Marcel took a
loft under their supervision and started a healthy rivalry on their
mutual territory. Marcel specialized in the Quievrain sprint races
and became champion and Leo entered his team preferably to
Noyon and middle distance racing. The prestigious title of the
Noyon races and the winning of the 1st Provincial Championship
Middle Distance Youngsters
were the result of their efforts.
“An extraordinary year,” Leo
remembers. “Marcel had many
friends and made them crazy
all week through. ‘To see a
phenomenal pigeon show, come
to the Heremans residence,’
he bragged. As a result, we
had more spectators when our
pigeons came home than the
football club on the other side of
the street.”
“We had more
spectators than
the football
club on the
other side of
the street”
Heremans-Ceusters
At the beginning of 1994 Leo became sick and ended up in
hospital, where the pneumologist diagnosed him with pigeon
lung. The message was short: From now on do not spend any
more time in the lofts. Leo was discouraged and apart from an
8-metre loft all the lofts were broken down. Marcel Mols housed
the breeders and the two decided to sell the majority of the
pigeons. Only the 18 best racers remained and were entered for
racing. Leo as supervisor, advisor and helping hand in training
and basketing the pigeons, Marcel Mols as loft manager. Leo’s
wife also helped very actively in training in those days. Because
the best pigeons remained, it was no big surprise that Heremans-
Mols were 1st Overall Champion. Members of the winning team
were icons like Goede Witpen and Goede Valen (1st National Ace
Bird Sprint AVE Regina), a cross of the old Van De Bempt lines
to pigeons of Frans De Cnodder, where Leo bought his two best
performers and their parents.
In 1997, Marcel Mols got ill, very ill. His days as pigeon fancier
were over. Leo Heremans became dependent on the help of
9
Leo Heremans and Karel Ceusters holding one of their many trophies
10
Golden hit with Goudklompje
In his quest for super pigeons, Leo Heremans went to an
auction of the Hasendonckx Brothers from Grobbendonk.
He knew they had quality, handled the pigeons and bought
the blue hen BE96-6165098 and chequer hen BE95-6296954.
After the auction, Leo went to the brothers – whom he
had never met – and asked them: “Is what I bought good
quality?” Flabbergasted they looked at Leo and gave him a
list with marks they had given their own pigeons. 098/96
had the highest mark.
Leo called her Goudklompje and she bred amongst others
Wonderaske, Mother Euro and Gertje. 954/95 was a
great performer herself and in Vorselaar 3 generations of
offspring of the hen, now better known as Goudvinkje, are
148/99 (5 x 1.), Chrisje (1st Nat. Ace Bird), Wonderaske
(Best Belgian Youngster), 444/00 (7 x 1st) and 166 (9 x 1st
prize).
pigeon friends and with great enthusiasm fanciers volunteered
to help Leo clean the loft. “Great loyalty but perhaps also a bit
because I promised them some pigeons if they would help me,”
Leo says realistically. “It was great to have so much help but
performances were inevitably poor.” One of the men that helped
Leo was Charel Ceusters and in late 1997 Charel became the loft
manager. This was the start of the very successful Heremans
Ceusters era.
The Heremans-Ceusters colony was then already enriched
with supreme breeding pigeons such as Goudklompje and
Goudvinkje through the Hasendonckx Brothers. The pairing of
Goudklompje to the legendary Goede Witpen was a choice that
would influence Belgian pigeon racing. The first racing year of
Heremans-Ceusters in 1998 was not yet that spectacular. For
Leo this was a reason to invest some more, this time at Maurice
Hasendonckx, uncle of the Hasendonckx Brothers. Maurice
performed exceptionally well
with especially eight
The will to win
with a golden
orientation
ability made
the Heremans
pigeons almost
unbeatable
widowhood cocks in those
days. It’s these eight that Leo
wanted to purchase. “You
can only buy youngsters from
them !” Maurice said and that’s
what Leo did. Some of these
original Maurice Hasendonckx
aces became valuable stock
breeders such as BE98-6110722
Favoriet, father to Natalia and
grandfather to Den Euro and
Wellens. Another example
is BE98-6110700 700 Duivin,
mother to 40’ (7 x 1st) and
grandmother to Den Euro.
BE98-6110712 Geschelpte
Maurice, a super hen when
paired to Gertje and breeder of
426/00 (1st Nat. Ace Bird & 5 x 1st) and 1st prize winners Freya,
Tango and Tulip, was also a valuable stock breeder.
Olympiade
Without a doubt the most important breeder of the Heremans-
Ceusters colony was BE01-6455003 Olympiade, not even fully
owned by Leo Heremans. On his weekly cycling day with old
friends, Leo Heremans always ended up in the pub in Beerse
for a cosy chat. If the weather was bad, the men played cards or
billiards. Landlady Marleen knew Leo as a top pigeon fancier
and introduced him to local stars Jos De Visser and Gust Jansen.
The three spent many hours talking about pigeons and on several
11
occasions they exchanged pigeons or bred together. A good
friendship arose between these top fanciers.
In 2002, Gust Jansen had a year to never forget. His 003/01
became the star of the loft and was even crowned as 2nd National
Ace Bird KBDB 2002, winning a bunch of top prizes. Leo went
to visit Gust to check out this exceptional cock and found Gust
in confusion. He had received a great offer for his favourite
pigeon but he really did not want to sell it. When Gust told Leo
how much money was involved, Leo advised him not to sell the
cock for that price. It made
Gust even more insecure and
“I’ll buy half
the pigeon.
One month it
will breed in
Vorselaar and
one month in
Beerse”
Leo came home with nothing
in mind but this pigeon. It
was a super pigeon and Leo
lost sleep over it. It would
be a shame to see it go. Chris
and Leo had a midnight
conversation and she said:
“Leo, why don’t you buy it
then?” Leo was glad his wife
agreed and the next morning
he drove to see Gust Jansen
again.
When Leo made an offer, Gust
could still not give him a direct
answer. The cock meant so
much to him. “I’ll buy half the pigeon,” said Leo and Gust looked
surprised. “I’ll pay you half the price I offered and we’ll both use
him for breeding: one month in Vorselaar, one month in Beerse,
etc. When we both agree to sell him, we’ll split the profit.”
Leo and Gust had a deal and two months later 003/01 was
declared as Belgian representative for the Lievin 2003 Olympiad.
The pigeon was called Olympiade. The first youngster Leo bred
from him directly won a 1st prize and ever since Olympiade
was always paired to Leo’s best hens. His progeny now form
a dynasty of top performers and breeders that is probably
unequalled in the world.
From perfection to deception
More and more the Heremans-Ceusters pigeon family grew
out to an unequalled level in short and middle distance racing.
The will to win in combination with a golden orientation ability
made the modern top strain almost unbeatable. “However,”
says Leo, “he who thinks he has the best and never searches for
new quality, will end up losing.” On quite a few occasions this
led to co-breeding with the best pigeons of other top fanciers
such as Gert Lauwerijs. He was a young lad and bought two
brothers of De Kannibaal from Van Dyck in the year Kannibaal
was crowned 1st National Ace Bird Middle Distance (Old) KBDB.
One of these brothers (BE96-6452295) was paired to Supersony,
granddaughter to Sony Houben, and this co-breeding pair bred
amongst others Super 799, a magical breeding cock and father to
amongst others 142/99 (5 x 1st), 202/99 (3 x 1st), 142/99 (5 x 1st
and father of 1st prov. Chateauroux) and Father Euro. The other
brother of Kannibaal (BE96-6452296) was paired to Goudklompje
of the Hasendonckx Brothers and this pair was just as good, if not
better, producing the top breeders Gertje and Blauwe 798. At the
auction of Jan Diels, the hens BE00-6440232 Blauw Kampioentje
(super breeding hen especially paired to Olympiade and 444)
and BE99-6229502 Donker Diels (mother to Chateauroux and
grandmother to Nathalia) were purchased. Their golden genes
had a great share in top successes as well.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Leo Heremans and Charel
Ceusters were at the top of their fame and it seemed like every
pigeon they basketed was able to win. Results were breathtaking
with five different 1st national ace birds in 6 years and 4 x 1st,
During a game of cards with amongst others Charel Ceusters
and Maurice Hasendonckx, Maurice said to Leo: “You’re playing
with fire, Leo. Everyone can come to your premises and check
out your pigeons and your lofts. You have the best pigeons in
the world, someone will come and try to take them.” Believing in
the good of all, Leo laughed Maurice’s remark away. However
not much later, on the 17th of
October 2006, loft manager
“You have the
best pigeons
in the world,
someone will
come and try to
take them”
Charel Ceusters came into
Leo’s home asking him why
all the doors of the lofts were
open. Leo knew instantly what
had happened and when they
noticed 30 cock birds were
missing, Leo said: “They will
come back for hens.”
From that night on, Leo had
almost nothing but sleepless
nights. On two occasions the
thieves returned. One time
Leo ended up in a crazy chase,
running through gardens, backyards and the forest, eventually
scaring the thief and finding two big bags with about 20 pigeons
in each of them. Leo was exhausted and totally devastated.
“This no more,” he said and he decided to sell all his pigeons,
probably the best short and middle distance colony of Belgium
at the time. The partnership with Charel Ceusters ended in 2006
and Leo’s new assistant was Hugo Vermeerbergen. To Hugo and
Gert, his son-in-law, Leo said: “I will sell all pigeons except for
two. When you want to continue in pigeon racing, I will give you
the last rounds I breed.” This being said, one round went to Gert
and three rounds to Hugo Vermeerbergen. Two pairs were sold
in BIS: the best old cock, Jan, and the best young cock, Nieuwe
Rossi, in one pair and the best old hen, Natalia, and best young
hen, Eenoogske, in the other. Leo sold in BIS because he wanted
to keep one pair so that he didn’t lose the total bond with his
pigeons.
Against all intentions
It was February 2007, just before the total auction, when Leo
brought the second round of three to Hugo Vermeerbergen.
“Where should I put them,” he asked. “Put them in your lofts,”
Hugo said, but Leo was determined. “I’ll build you an aviary,”
he said, and within the nick of time Leo had constructed a new
home for this round of youngsters. For the last round Leo told
Hugo he would build another aviary but Hugo was not that
enthusiastic. “Leo,” he said, “you cannot live without pigeons.
14
You put them in your lofts.” There was not a bone in Leo’s body
that thought about that option. Ever since he no longer kept
pigeons at his home he enjoyed a good night’s sleep again. He
kept on insisting on building the extra aviary at Hugo’s place.
However, by the time the youngsters were ready, the aviary was
still not built. Hugo again suggested that they should be put in
Leo’s lofts. Hugo would take care of them every day and Leo
would have no trouble whatsoever, which was acceptable for Leo.
Not much later, two weeks after the auction in 2007, Leo’s wife
Chris died. She had always been the centre of the close family
and the loss was enormous. Leo found a bit of comfort in the
youngsters in his lofts and
the pair Nieuwe Rossi x
When Leo let the
youngsters out
for the first time,
he knew deep
down he was not
ready to abandon
pigeon racing yet
Eenoogske that remained.
Leo let the youngsters out
for the first time and when
they carefully came out
exploring the skies they
would later excel in, Leo
knew deep down that he
was not ready to abandon
pigeon racing for good.
With this team he would
make a new start and that
is what he did. In late 2007,
he entered the youngsters
outside of competition. The
hen BE07-6379888 Nest
Sister Jan Junior would have
won the 1st prize if she had been in competition. In 2012, this top
hen became the mother of the Olympiad top pigeon Olympic
Sperwer.
The first race in 2008 Leo immediately won the 1st and 2nd
15
To give and to get
Until the late nineties Leo Heremans sold almost no pigeons.
He gave them all away and all that were blessed to have
Heremans pigeons in their lofts succeeded with them. On the
one hand, the international pigeon world would later on push
each other aside to obtain something of Vorselaar’s diamonds
and the strain of Heremans became the new world strain.
On the other hand, fanciers also considered it an honour
when Leo Heremans was interested in their pigeons. Such an
example is top fancier Paul Huls from Zonhoven, who offered
Leo from his best pigeons on several occasions. When they
met at the Zorgenkind Auction, Paul said: “Don’t you want
my pigeons?” “I just got one,” said Leo, who had just bought
Paul’s donation to the auction. “Come by and get more,” Paul
said but a lack of time held Leo back. A few months later the
telephone rang: “Don’t you want them ?” Paul asked again
and Leo explained. Paul immediately stepped in the car, took
two baskets with 24 pigeons with him and Leo picked the
10 finest to pair them to his own best lines. The 1st Ace Bird
Middle Distance Mechelen Region 2011 was bred from an
original Paul Huls cock.
prize and was back in business with Hugo Vermeerbergen as
loft manager again. To rebuild a breeding colony, he went to his
son-in-law Gert to select the best from the round of latebreds
he had given him in 2006. Leo also took back the hen BE02-
6114797 Tongerke that he lent for breeding. This hen was paired
to amongst others Olympiade, a golden hit since this pair bred
modern top breeder Safir (father of Dubbel Aske, Surprise, etc.).
Ancient topper Jan, bought by Paul Huysmans at the auction in
2007, also came home and the lines that brought Leo Heremans
to the top were back where they belonged.
A golden hand
In his everlasting search for top pigeons Leo kept on visiting
auctions where he could find reinforcements. At an auction of
youngsters from G. & S. Verkerk from The Netherlands, Leo was
especially charmed by a young hen from their top performer
Sprint, 1st NPO Chateauroux and 2nd National Ace Bird. He
bought it to pair it to Olympiade.
The first youngster from this pair was Prins Olympiade, breeder
of Gebroken Poot (1st Quievrain 2,675 birds) and grandfather
to the super brothers Bolt (1st Nat. Ace Bird KBDB 2012) and
Louis (3 x 1st prize). One year later, Galantos was purchased
in the same venue at an auction of Gerard Koopman from The
Netherlands. Again Leo Heremans proved his golden hands. He
paired Galantos to a granddaughter of Olympiade and the first
two cocks from this pair were used for breeding. One of them
bred the Olympiad top pigeon Nieuwe Olympiade. In 2012,
Galantos was paired to the nest sister of Jan Junior and they bred
the Olympiad icon Olympic Sperwer. Leo’s eye for perfection
brought him eternal fame again.
The last two years in pigeon racing were extremely
successful for Leo Heremans but probably also the two
toughest of his career. His health became poorer and
poorer and in 2012 he was exhausted by the end of the
season. Another full-speed year in pigeon racing would
endanger his health and because Leo Heremans wants
to do all he does at 100 per cent, he decided to sell all his
pigeons. Even for selling his pigeons, Leo looked for the
best and considered PIPA to be the most professional
organisation to sell his colony. This is an auction with a
surplus of quality never seen before and therefore bound
to become legendary.
“That studded one is a special
youngster,” said loft manager
Hugo when 'Bolt' was just 6 weeks
old. He reacted differently to
the others, did what he wanted
to do. Before the first race all
youngsters got electronic rings,
just one pigeon was forgotten and
was basketed without electronic
pigeon to come in was the one
Favoriete Pair earned its name simply because Leo had
high expectations of them when he composed the pair.
Leo breeds only one round from each pair for himself.
From this pair he directly put the eggs under another
pair so he would have 4 from this pair. All 4 were
cocks and all 4 were top birds. Leo always says his first
impression is the best and when he called this pair his
favourite pair, he showed himself to be right again.
For many years in a row Wolfgang Roeper
from Germany bought the second round from Leo Heremans and
raced with them. In 2010 he got his top ace 241/10 (2nd National
Ace Bird 2012) from this pair and in 2012 Leo Heremans
Roeper Pair
himself bred the 1st ace bird Quievrain
from them. From the cock, Herbots purchased their Bourges Best
in 2011, winner of 2nd National Bourges and 1st Interprovincial
Moulins. Could there possibly be a better breeding pair?
Born in August 2007 and bred as second child to
Olympiade x Tongerke, Leo knew Safier had to
be of great value for breeding. Wolfgang Roeper
saw him and wanted direct children of him. Safier
was a late bred and week after week Leo went
with some old hens in the loft to get the hormones
started. In November he tried to pair them and Safier
immediately paired with Daughter Jan. Their first egg
68
Wolfgang Roeper, Kummerfeld (GE)
National ace bird & Olympiad icon
Since 1999 Wolfgang Roeper has been buying pigeons from
Leo Heremans and raced with them. An investment that paid
off in gold, with many different 1st national ace birds and
Olympiad winners. For Nitra 2013 Wolfgang had no less than 6
(!) Olympiad pigeons. One of his champions is BE10-6146241, an
original Leo Heremans, which won 3 x 1st in a big competition
and ended up 2nd Nat. Ace Cock Germany and was 1st German
BE06-6410616 (from ‘426’ x ‘Wonderaske’), whose nest mate bred
the 4th Nat. Ace Bird Allround 2010. Poznan Olympiad bird
‘394’ is bred from ‘Brother Euro’ and Nitra Olympiad bird ‘16’ is
grandchild to original Heremans aces. And so the story goes on.
Willem De Bruijn, Reeuwijk (NL)
2 Olympiad birds and NPO toppers
The man who introduced Heremans-Ceusters pigeons in The
Netherlands was Willem De Bruijn. In 2005 he bought a round
of youngsters and amongst them were terrific performers and
breeders. Willem had numerous wins against thousands of birds
with Heremans-Ceusters offspring; most impressive was the
Olympiad representation in 2011 with Olympic Schanulleke (long
distance) and Olympic Hurricane (youngsters). The last one bred
Olympic Froome (Olympiad yearling 2013) for C. & M. Everling.
and Paul about Leo Heremans. They race a colony of 90%
Heremans pigeons, with top ace Samson as the most famous
pigeon, winning 1st Nat. Argenton 23,419 birds (fastest 33,097
champions are Janie, 1st prov. Bourges 4,555 birds, Grandson
Diadora 1st prov. champion long distance KBDB and 137/10 Son
Jan 2 x 1st prize.
Olympiad Nitra cat. A 2013
Bought 3 x 1st prize winner Di Caprio at the Heremans-Ceusters
a new breeding legend. His best son is BE08-6338005 Olympic
Nels, Olympiad bird cat. A Nitra 2013 and co-winner of the
Gouden Duif trophy 2011, but also 2 x 1st prov. championship in
Danny Van Dyck, Pulle (BE)
1st National champion middle distance young KBDB 2011
to his own Kanon lines in breeding these two were supreme.
Offspring from this pair were co-winners of the 1st Nat.
championship middle distance young KBDB 2011, winner of 1st
European championship FCI and winners of many 1st prizes
against thousands of pigeons. What super class.
Marina Van De Velde, Grobbendonk (BE)
Euro, Jackpot, Goochelaar, Rossi x Spinneke, etc. It brought
one of the best quality injections of talent to Eijerkamp ever.
Most recent champions are 1st and 3rd Dutch middle distance
