Leo Heremans, the eye for perfection… By far the most popular pigeon strain in the world is that of Leo Heremans because of the way it dominates all over the world. Leo applied the eye for perfection he developed as diamond cutter onto pigeon racing and created the new world strain. Very reliable, with a rough base that was refined year after year and eventually turned out to become the best short and middle distance pigeon in the world. A story of survival … of dedication … of talent … of misfortune … but above all, of great success. His father passed away when Leo was just six months old, leaving the family with debts and his mother and older brothers to find a way to make a living. Just two cows were their source of income and in order to pay for the hospital bills even these two had to be sold. This was a period that required a great deal of effort to survive for the entire family. However Leo, the youngest of the family, was protected from their troubles and never experienced the first years of his life as being as poor as they were. Leo Heremans grew up in a period that required a great deal of effort to survive for the entire family It characterized the Heremans family that - bit by bit - hard labour enabled them to improve their living standards. Before Leo’s tenth birthday the farm of Heremans ensured a steady income, not much but enough for the family to leave poverty behind. Leo’s oldest brother Louis, 17 years older, became Leo’s second father and took him by the hand during his youth. It was a youth where sports played an important role for the pigeon legend to be.
