Lake to the Mountains - West Lake Macquarie Visitors Booklet
Introduction
Since moving to this area in the 70’s I have fallen in love with this amazing
location. In the 1920’s it was known as the Riviera of Australia with people
coming from far and wide, arriving by trains like “The Coffee Pot”, staying at the
Historic Toronto Hotel and rejuvenating by enjoying the Lakeside lifestyle.
Exploring the area brings many delights such as the waterfalls and views from
the Watagans National Park, sitting in one of the numerous lakeside parks having
a picnic, sailing or paddling on the lake exploring the many inlets, whatever you
choose to do you will be doing it in a beautiful place.
This booklet showcases the West Lake Macquarie area between Speers Point in
the north, Morisset in the south. bordered by Lake Macquarie in the east and the
Watagans National Park in the west. Filled with local businesses who strive to
give great service to visitors and locals, we hope you find it a useful reference
whilst you visit our wonderful area.
Paddling past the Art Gallery, Cockle Bay
Awaba & Cockle Bay Journey
(Speers Point - Bolton Point)
Written & photographed by Glenn MacFadyen,
The School of Yak
People say time spent messing about in boats is
time well spent and the northern end of Lake
Macquarie is no exception if you are looking for few
hours of “water time”. Visitors will delight at the
attractions of the area either by joining an organised
tour or as a self-guided adventure. You will soon
discover why the locals love living here. Starting
from the waterfront near the Lake Macquarie Art
Gallery or for a longer journey we suggest the easy launch site of award winning Speers Point Park. Follow
the coastline south west through Cockle Bay and pass by the fabulous Lake Macquarie Art Gallery where
you can stop off for a visit and a leisurely lunch or coffee. As you leave the gallery keep the business area of
Marmong Point marine precinct on your right as you admire some of beautiful homes and yachts found in
this area. Leaving the populated part of the shoreline behind
Old Bridge pylons on Cockle Creek
paddle past the parklands and you will soon arrive at the
unmistakable Awaba Bay Nature Reserve.
With its craggy cliffs and forests Awaba Bay is quiet, secluded
and a great place for swimming in summer or for simply
wandering along the walking trails. Take your binoculars and
you may spot some of the lorikeets, white bellied sea eagles
or kookaburras that inhabit the diverse habitat of the
reserve. An early morning paddler will be rewarded with
effortless gliding across the surface when the lake is at its
calmest and most tranquil state of the day. By kayak this
journey will take confident paddlers about three hours to
complete, it can also be undertaken by walking or cycling.
Cooranbong - gateway to the Watagan National Park
Named from the Aboriginal “Kouranbong” and meaning “water over rocks”, the
area was home to the Awabakal Tribe and used for tribal clashes. The first
Europeans to settle in the area were in 1826. Early industries included farming,
timber, fishing and shipbuilding. The village centre was declared in 1897. The
Seventh Day Adventist Estate was established in the 1890’s where Avondale College
was founded. The Sanitarium Health Food Company relocated from Melbourne to
the estate in the early 1900’s. They are famous for bringing healthy eating to
Australia through its products and cafes.
The village of Cooranbong now boasts
most of the essentials including a café
and The Elephant Shop. The South Seas
Museum showcases items and the
culture of the peoples of the South Sea
Islands where many of the Seventh Day
Adventist missions visit. A great place to
Watagans National Park
Watagans National Park boasts some of
the country’s finest rainforest scenery.
Moss-covered walls and boulders,
towering canopies of red cedar and
Illawarra flame trees pepper the walking
track to Gap Creek Falls. You can also
expect extraordinary views down toward
rainforest gullies at Monkey Face and Gap
Creek lookouts.
The Watagan Mountains also house a rich cultural heritage; more than 40 Aboriginal
sites highlight art and engraving techniques, and remnants from previous forestry
operations showcase settlement history in the area.
Gap Creek Camp & Picnic Grounds
Bangalow and Gap Creek campgrounds
provide overnight comfort for those who
wish to continue exploring; you can pitch a
tent next to your car and take advantage of
the free barbecue areas and picnic tables
available to you.
Whether you arrive with a walking, cycling
or 4WD tour in mind, remember to bring
your sense of adventure as you’ll discover
new things to do every time you visit.
Monkey Face lookout offers one of the best vantage points in the park, with sweeping
views east across the Martinsville Valley. Cameras are a must here, and binoculars are a
good idea too – you’ll want to take advantage of the terrific birdwatching opportunities,
with glossy black cockatoos often seen here.
Settle down in a picnic spot under the
ancient grass trees and ironbarks around
the lookout, enjoying the view whilst you
eat. In winter, the air is crisp and clean,
refreshing and revitalising as you survey the
land. In summer, the sun is hot and bright
This lofty vantage point was named by the local Hall family, long-established landowner
graziers. They would use the steep narrow track to lead their horses up onto the
escarpment from well below the lookout.
Today, the name has stuck, but there's no
need to saddle up for a visit. It’s easily
accessible by car and is popular with 4WD
tourers, or it can be accessed on foot as
part of Great North walk.
Positioned high amidst dry grassy woodland
with prominent rocky outcrops and scree
slopes below, The Narrow Place lookout
offers scenic northern views over Hunter
Valley towns including Quorrobolong,
Paxton, Ellalong, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri.
are known to sun themselves below the escarpment, and birdwatching is at its best in
There are over 150 native animals recorded in Watagans National Park including
