Introduction
The abilities to communicate with complex language and to think actively about one’s
own history and future make us as humans unique. But how did our brain develop, what
is the origin of language and that of cognitive and cultural human skills? In the coming
years, researchers want to throw light on important aspects of human evolution.
Properties of individual nerve cells are already well researched today. However, when we
think, smell, feel, make plans, or learn, extremely complex processes are at work in our
brain; these processes require the interaction of many neurons in different brain areas.
Which material processes accompany the mental ones? New imaging methods make it
possible to observe the brain as it produces cognitive results and to trace which brain
areas are activated at which times. But how does the brain use the different information
to produce an image of the world?
Research is focusing on more and more complex cognitive processes and structures:
how do we recognize and distinguish faces and how is language processed in the brain?
Furthermore, what is the connection between individual differences in learning and intelligence
with variations in the brain? How far can these differences be traced to a different
genetic background? Additional progress should result in new integrative methods that
researchers are currently developing, to allow observation of the extensively branched
neural networks and the development of functional organization in the brain. The goal
is for smart agents and functional MRIs to make it possible to see changes in ion and
molecular concentration, both of which are involved in signaling processes.

Facts and Figures
Daten und Fakten
Sensors for the World Evolution has equipped us with highly-sensitive senses. Around
10 photons on the retina are sufficient to create the impression of a las t ing point of light.
Our hearing reacts to fluctuations in air pressure, which is regis tered as a sound signal.
Under optimal conditions, we can perceive oscillations in the eardrum of a hundredth of
a nanometer, less than the diameter of a hydrogen atom. The most sensitive sensor in
humans is the sense of smell: in the nose there are about 20 to 30 million olfactory cells,
each covered in up to 20 tiny sensory hairs. We can distinguish between around 10,000
different smells; the aroma of coffee alone contains more than 600 signals.
THE ORIGINS OF MAN
DIE WURZELN DES MENSCHEN
1
Development of Human Speech In accordance with
the latest studies of the skull of a homo erectus child,
early man did not have the ability to speak. After birth,
his brain did not have sufficient time to grow and mature
Hole or Dent? Let’s assume that light comes from the
above left; we consequently regard the upper part of
the image as a hole and the right as a dent. However, if
the light comes from the bottom right, the interpretation
is reversed. However, for most observers, this second
interpretation is much more difficult to see as our everyday
perception is geared towards light from above. If the
image is turned upside down, the hole – dent interpretation
is reversed.
The Evolution of Hearing We tend to forget that earlier
Unlocking the Secret of the Immune Gene’s Scent
Female mice and stickleback recognize the immune
gene of a potential partner by its scent alone. A female
stickle back prefers the male whose immune gene would
combine with hers to produce offspring with an optimum
immune defense system. Scientists have now discovered
that it is possible to use peptides, namely small
protein fragments that represent a natural ›blue phase‹
of immune genes, to manipulate the attraction of male
sticklebacks.
Duftbotschaft der Immungene entdeckt Bereits am
dass man mit Peptiden, kleinen Eiweißbruchstücken, die
Attraktivität von Stichlingsmännchen manipulieren kann.
Bones in the Ear under Genetic Control When living
beings move, their sense of balance contributes to
spatial orientation. The organ of equilibrium in the ear
of vertebrates contains small bones, so-called otoliths,
that amplify vibrations and transmit them to the sensory
cells in the ear. Researchers have identified the gene
that controls the correct crystallization of the bones in
the ear. If the gene product in the otoliths is missing, its
form changes from spherical to star-shaped, resulting
in impaired balance. This proves for the first time that a
protein can hinder the growth of a crystal and also influence
its lattice structure.
Ohrsteinchen unter genetischer Kontrolle Wenn Lebewesen
genannte Otolithe, die Schwingungen verstärken und an
die Sinneszellen im Ohr weiterleiten. Forscher haben das
Gen entdeckt, das die korrekte Auskristallisierung der
Ohrsteine steuert.
Library of Babel Identity is closely interwoven with
speech. In many parts of the world, however, very little
consideration is paid to this fact. Some 6,500 languages
are currently spoken worldwide, but fewer than 100 of
them have an official status. The remaining 6,400 languages
are as good as meaningless from both an economic
and political point of view. It is a tremendous
loss for many people, however, if a language dies out
and there is no one left who understands the language
of their childhood. Cautious estimates assume that by
the end of the 21st century there will only be 3,250
languages remaining, about half of the present number.
The DobeS project (Documentation of Endangered
Languages) is aiming to preserve this valuable cultural
heritage.
21. Jahrhunderts nur noch 3.250 Sprachen geben wird,
also rund die Hälfte. Dieses wertvolle kulturelle Erbe zu
Speech Gene Found? In humans, mutations in the
so-called FOXP2 gene lead to specific problems with
articulation and the understanding of speech. This gene
apparently has a central function in the development of
the ability to speak. Numerous bird species acquire their
patterns of singing in the same way as humans learn to
speak. Studies also revealed that zebra finches have an
almost identical version of this gene.
Sprachgen gefunden? Mutationen im so genannten
FOXP2-Gen führen bei Menschen zu spezifischen Sprachproblemen
bei Artikulation und Sprachverständnis. Offensichtlich
Zahlreiche Vogelarten
lernen ihre Gesangsmuster ähnlich wie Menschen das
Sprechen. Untersuchungen ergaben denn auch, dass
Zebrafinken eine nahezu identische Version dieses Gens
The Neuronal Structures of the Sense
of Smell Using new optical methods
that are being developed and refined
by Max Planck Society researchers, the
activity of many neurons during information
processing in the intact brain can be
visualized. In this way, Max Planck scientists
found structures, so-called glome r-
uli, in the olfactory bulbs of mice in which
synapses are enlarged. After being stimulated
with an aroma, the activity of the
glomeruli can be measured. Analysis of
such activity patterns is providing information
about how odor information is
coded in the brain.
Die neuronalen Strukturen des
Verfahren, die in der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
entwickelt und verfeinert werden,
kann man die Aktivität vieler Neuronen
während der Informationsverarbeitung im
intakten Gehirn sichtbar machen. Auf diese
Weise fanden Max-Planck-Wissenschaftler
im Riechkolben der Maus Strukturen, so
genannte Glomeruli, in denen Synapsen
einem Geruchsstoff lässt sich die Aktivität
der Glomeruli messen. Die Analyse solcher
Aktivitätsmuster gibt Aufschluss, wie
Ge ruchs information im Gehirn codiert wird.
Recognizing is More Than Seeing The
dream of intelligent computers – already
reality in science fiction films – is actually
still just a utopian vision. Although
computers are superior to their human
architects in some areas, they fall short
in others: for example, in seeing and
recognizing objects. Researchers are
examining how our visual system calculates
form and movement of objects
from two-dimensional depictions.
Computer animation shows that ambiguities
in the image interpretation are not
resolved until the object – the ball –
throws a shadow.
Erkennen ist mehr als Sehen Der Traum
von intelligenten Computern – in Sciencefiction-Filmen
bereits Realität – ist tat sächlich
noch Utopie. Denn obwohl Computer
ihren menschlichen Erbauern in einigen
Bereichen überlegen sind, hapert es
anderswo: etwa beim Sehen und Er kennen
von Gegenständen. Forscher untersuchen,
wie unser Sehsystem Form
und Bewegung von Objekten aus zweidimensionalen
Abbildungen berechnet.
Die Computeranimation zeigt, dass sich
Mehrdeutigkeiten in der Bildinterpretation
erst auflösen, wenn das Objekt – der Ball –
einen Schatten wirft.
How Are Movements in the Brain Perceived? Detecting
and interpreting movement in the environment can be
crucial to survival. Most studies to date have employed
electrophysiological techniques in order to analyze
the reaction of individual neurons. To date, however,
almost nothing has been known about the behavior of
cell groups or of whole neuronal networks. Max-Planck
researchers have now employed functional core-spin
tomography to study the cortical activities in the perception
of movement, and to identify the neuronal populations
involved.
beteiligte neuronale Populationen identifiziert.
Methods Mix Helps Reduce Infarct Volume When a
patient suffers an acute stroke, it is necessary to accurately
differentiate between the regions of the brain
that have suffered irreversible damage and those that
are functionally impaired but still morphologically intact.
This is where magnetic resonance tomography (MRT)
comes into its own. Comparison with data that have
been obtained at the same time using positron-emission
tomography, a highly accurate technology that is not in
widespread use due to its complexity, helps in the further
development of the MRT method.
What Are We Aware of When We Sleep? Whether
thoughts or perceptions, intentions or movements
– all brain activity leaves an electrical trace. Medicine
has been using this electrical noise for decades for
diagnostic purposes in combination with electro en cephalo
grahpy (EEG). With the help of EEG and functional
magnetic resonance tomography, scientists at the Max
Planck Institute of Psychiatry are studying how our brain
reacts to environmental stimuli during different sleep
phases.
Stacked Images of the ›Wires‹ in the Brain Serial blockface
scanning electron microscopy (SBFSEM) is the complicated
name of a new technology developed at the Max
Planck Institute for Medical Research. With this method,
scientists are able to show even the smallest axonal
paths with a diameter of often less than a thousandth
of a millimeter. Scientists use an electron microscope
in combination with a cutter. A photograph is taken of
each of the discs cut by this microtome that are about 50
nanometers thick. The result is a stack of digital images
that produces a spatial image of the brain tissue studied.
to render processes in the living, light-sensitive retina
Combined Insights Into Brain Functions
Using new techniques, researchers have
succeeded in exa mining signal transmission
between neurons in the brain in a
combination of electrode discharges and
functional magnetic resonance imaging.
This allowed them to prove for the
first time that oxygen saturation in the
blood (BOLD signal) can actually be used
for precise measurements of changes
in neuron activity. Their discovery: fMRI
tracks down those areas of the brain that
are processing information that stem
from a stimulus, and not neurons that
discharge as a direct response to this
stimulus.
Kombinierter Scharfblick auf Gehirnfunktionen
Mit neuartigen Techniken
ist es Forschern gelungen, die Signalübertragung
zwischen Neuronen im
Gehirn in einer Kombination aus Elek trodenableitungen
und funktio neller Magnetresonanztomographie
zu untersuchen.
Damit konnten sie erstmals nachweisen,
dass mit der Sauerstoffsättigung im Blut
(BOLD-Signal) tatsächlich Veränderungen
der Neuronenaktivität exakt gemessen
werden. Ihre Entdeckung: fMRT spürt
jene Gehirnareale auf, die Informationen
verarbeiten, die von einem Stimulus herrühren,
und nicht Neuronen, die sich
als direkte Antwort auf diesen Stimulus
A Look Into the Intact Brain Two-photon
microscopy, developed by scientists
at the Max Planck Institute for Medical
Research, allows high-resolution fluorescent
imaging of the intact cerebral cortex
for the first time. These images supply
knowledge on the interaction of different
neuronal cells. Consequently, researchers
are able to demonstrate in experiments
how astrocytes, a special type of neuroglial
cells, enclose the blood vessels and
capillaries in the brain with their extensions.
der intakten Großhirnrinde.
Diese Bilder liefern Erkenntnisse über
das Zusammenspiel verschiedener neuronaler
A Look Into the Neuronal Coordinating
Points Without the need for contrast
medium or an operation, magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) enables a view of
what remains concealed to X-rays: the
soft body parts, such as tissue and inner
organs. In brain research, a further deve l-
opment, functional MRI (fMRI), represented
a breakthrough: one benefit of this
technology is that it allows resear chers to
detect where the brain is working when
it thinks. For the first time, scientists can
experimentally examine how our coordinating
points function during learning.
Blick in die neuronale Schaltzentrale
Die Magnetresonanztomografie (MRT)
macht ohne Kontrastmittel oder Operation
sichtbar, was mit Röntgenstrahlen verborgen
bleibt: die weichen Körperteile,
wie Gewebe und innere Organe. Für
die Hirnforschung war besonders eine
Weiterentwicklung, die funktionelle MRT
(fMRT), ein Durchbruch: Mit dieser Technik
können Forscher unter anderem erkennen,
wo das Gehirn arbeitet, wenn es denkt.
Damit eröffnete sich der Wissenschaft
erstmals die Möglichkeit, experimentell zu
untersuchen, wie unsere Schaltzentrale
beim Lernen funktioniert.
Positron Emission Tomography Modern
imaging methods, such as Positron Emission
Tomography (PET), are capable of
depicting molecular disease processes.
The characteristics of certain brain
tumors can be visualized, such as the
characteristic of increased formation of
amino acid transporters, for instance,
which leads to increased absorption of
amino acids. Visualization is particularly
important when planning further treatment,
as the tumors that are examined
grow deep into the brain structures. PET
supplies data on the exact dimensions
of such tumors, and is therefore vital for
planning surgery.
Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie
Moderne bildgebende Verfahren wie die
Positronen-Emissions-Tomographie (PET)
können molekulare Krankheitsprozesse
darstellen. So kann die Eigenschaft
bestimm ter Hirntumore visualisiert werden,
etwa die, vermehrt Aminosäuretransporter
zu bilden, was zu einer erhöhten Aufnahme
von Aminosäuren führt. Die Visualisierung
ist besonders wichtig für die weitere
Behandlungsplanung, da die untersuchten
Tumore tief in die Gehirnstrukturen hineinwachsen.
PET liefert Daten über die exakte
Ausdehnung eines solchen Tumors
und ist daher für die Planung operativer
Eingriffe von Bedeutung.
