Welcome to the second annual Spring Swing sponsored by the Bradford Hospital 

Foundation and the Bradford Hospital Auxiliary, two organizations that work 

tirelessly to support our hospital’s many programs and services. Last year’s 

inaugural gala was a memorable evening and proceeds from that event 

helped to fund essential renovations to our hospital’s Critical Care Unit. 

This evening’s gala event will support important and much needed 

improvements to our Labor and Delivery unit. 

On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Bradford Regional Medical 

Center, it is particularly appropriate to honor Mrs. Zenaide Still, an active 

member of the community for 50 years and a generous supporter of our 

hospital and M. Javed Akhtar, MD, a physician and leader in the Bradford 

community for more than 30 years. These two honorees are at the heart of 

our anniversary theme: Side by Side. Year by Year. Caring for Our Community. 

Both of these exemplary individuals have long given unselfishly of their time 

and talents to improve the health and well-being of all we serve at Bradford 

Regional Medical Center.

Chairman 

As we begin tonight’s wonderful activities that will honor our two healthcare 

advocates, Zenaide S. Still and M. Javed Akhtar, M.D., we pause for a 

moment and thank each of them for their more than forty years of care and 

concern for Bradford Regional Medical Center and the Bradford community. 

Both the Foundation and the Auxiliary salute our two Honorees and you our 

guests for your tireless support of our hospital’s many programs and services. 

It’s a new day for BRMC, and we thank the leadership of Timothy J. Finan and 

his team for their ability to create a dramatic favorable financial turnaround! 

We have come together tonight for a common purpose: our commitment to 

Bradford Regional Medical Center. The Spring Swing Gala is a time to celebrate 

and to demonstrate our belief in community health, and to thank those quiet leaders 

and humble philanthropists who see to the mission of our work. 

We’d like to thank our committee who worked so tirelessly: Harvey Golubock, Sandra McKinley, Vonda Reese, 

Francie Ambuske, Ginny Hauser, Stephanie Huber and Jill Cummiskey. 

Tonight’s proceeds will benefit the renovations of BRMC’s Labor and Delivery Unit and we thank our sponsors

It is again my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Spring Swing 

Recognition Gala honoring members of our Hospital Community who have 

consistently demonstrated their loyal belief in Bradford Regional Medical 

Center (BRMC) through Healthcare, Medical and/or Philanthropic excellence. 

As the BHA celebrates its 80th anniversary, we continue our 

dedication of support to BRMC. We are pleased to co-sponsor this second 

annual event with Bradford Hospital Foundation. 

This year’s honorees, M. Javed Akhtar, M.D. and Zenaide S. Still, truly 

portray the fundamental ideals of community and service in the 

healthcare arena. It is with great privilege that we recognize their 

contributions to both the greater Bradford community and to BRMC. 

On behalf of the Bradford Hospital Auxiliary, we sincerely thank you for your support

M. Javed Akhtar, M.D. is “eminently qualified”, stated Widad Bazzoui, M.D., (first 

Spring Swing Physician recipient) to receive the Physician Award for Medical and 

Philanthropic Excellence at Bradford Regional Medical Center’s Spring Swing 

Gala slated for March 24, 2012. 

Dr. Akhtar began his career in Bradford, PA in January 1982 and was the 

first ear, nose, and throat specialist hired in this region. Dr. Akhtar serves 

patients at both BRMC and Olean General Hospital, both of which are 

member hospitals of our new Upper Allegheny Health System. 

During his thirty year medical tenure he has served as President of BRMC 

Medical Staff and also for the McKean County Medical Society. He and his 

wife have generously supported Bradford Hospital Foundation in helping to 

meet the mission of BRMC. 

As a Bradford Rotarian who will assume the Presidency role this July, Dr. 

Akhtar has a life philosophy that “community comes first”. Through Rotary, he 

championed efforts to raise important funds to eradicate polio, a disease still prevalent in India, 

Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. His Rotarian efforts to raise support for polio brought important 

international attention to this disease culminating in a Regional Service Award for Polio Eradication in 2010- 

2011 through Rotary International for Dr. Akhtar. 

Currently Dr. Akhtar is establishing a free standing “walk in” clinic in the Bradford area to assist with indigent 

and working poor families. This newly developing non-profit 501(c)(3) organization will have board oversight 

and will be managed by volunteer physicians and nurses. This clinic mirrors one established by the Association 

of Pakistani Physicians of North America, a 2400 physician member organization whose mission focuses on 

local and world wide relief work including earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis, etc. In January, Dr. Akhtar assumed 

the post of Chairman of Board of Trustees of this organization, while his wife Shahnaz has served as Past 

President of this Association’s Auxiliary. 

He credits his ability to serve others here and afar because of the endearing partnership with his wife, 

Shahnaz. He and his wife grew up with their families thinking that it’s important to find meaning in life, and 

that we are called to help the suffering and underprivileged. “My greatest gifts in life are my wife and our 

two children”, Junaid, age 31, who has served for 8 years in the Army and currently works at the Pentagon 

and Henna, 28, who is in her last year at Ianovia Fairfax Hospital in Virginia as Chief Pediatric Resident. 

Dr. Akhtar is the youngest of nine children. His medical education started at King Edward Medical College, 

Lahore, Pakistan. His surgical residency was completed at SUNY Buffalo, and his otolaryngology residency at 

the University of Miami in Florida in 1979. His certifications include Fellow American Academy of Otolaryngology 

Surgery in 1979, and Fellowship in American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 1985. 

For more than thirty years the Akhtars have made Bradford their home and life commitment. Their belief in the 

needs of all have served us both here locally and throughout the country and the world. Side by side the 

Akhtars have embraced humanity and have reached out wherever they are to serve. We are honored to 

have them as part of our Bradford Community!

Zenaide Schaffner Still 

Zenaide Still has an unmatched love and concern for Bradford, noted Rev. 

Leo J. Gallina, (first Spring Swing Community recipient). “As the 2012 Healthcare/ 

Community Philanthropist recipient, she is known for always being 

willing to help out to make her community a better place.” 

“That’s Zenaide!,” Father Leo quoted. 

Zenaide is the daughter of Zenaide Doubet Schaffner and William 

Joseph Schaffner. She is the 5th child of six siblings. Graduating from 

Butler High School in 1946, she entered Mercy Hospital School of 

Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated, President of her class, in 

1949. There she met George Still, a Bradford native, who was 

finishing his M.D. internship at Mercy Hospital at the time. 

Her first post was at Mercy Hospital in Miami, FL. She was an RN with 

the Veteran’s Administration in 1950 where there was not only a formal 

pay scale but also benefits, which was a first for its time. With the war ending 

in 1944, many military nurses were hired by the VA. In 1951 she moved to 

Coral Gables, FL to take care of Veterans from all over the states. 

In 1953 George Still called Zenaide while he was Chief Resident at Kansas City Hospital in Kansas City where 

there had been a serious polio outbreak. Having completed his residency, George was recalled into the Navy and 

sent to Key West, FL. He was appointed Senior Medical Officer aboard the U.S.S. Bushnell; a submarine tender. 

They “courted” for a year and were married at St. Theresa’s Church in Coral Gables, FL on April 24, 1954. In 

January 1955 they moved to Boston where George completed post graduate courses in Cardiology at Harvard. 

Later that year would mean a return to George Still’s hometown of Bradford, PA. He and Zenaide lived their 

lives serving the healthcare needs through Bradford Hospital and raising their family. 

Her lifetime community work includes advancing philanthropy through her families’ establishment of the 

George J. Still M.D. Cardiology Named Fund. Her family includes her children, Kate, George Jr., Dr. 

Christopher, Andrew, and William. Other involvement includes: Creating a Naming Opportunity for the “Altar” 

at Pitt Bradford’s Harriett Wick Chapel; supporting the Elf Fund’s Festival of Trees and the Bradford Area Public 

Library’s Annual Derby Gala; serving as a lead volunteer, first with her husband George, and more recently with 

her daughter, Kate at the Annual BRMC Charity Classic; one of St. Bernard’s “God’s Housekeeper’s,” and served 

as Social Chairman for the Catholic Women’s Club at St. Bernard’s Church, and Scholarship Chairman for Bradford 

Hospital Auxiliary with a lifetime Auxiliary membership; serving the Red Cross through Meals on Wheels and 

volunteering at The Friendship Table. 

We say without hesitation that this is a woman with a glad heart and a cheerful smile who handles her daily ordinary 

routines by unconditionally making others feel good about themselves. It simply is within her as a person 

to say nice things, to look excited to see you and to speak only kind words. She can affectionately admit to a 

poor game of golf or bridge, but delights that she can play! She didn’t hesitate to be the first woman to take 

a permit on a “dry-fly” while fly fishing in Boca Paila in the Yucatan. She loves fly fishing! And especially with 

family & friends. She compliments her husband’s patience in having taught her this grand sport. 

A lifetime is not too long to live as friends. That is her philosophy. Whether we are family, friends, comunity 

or stranger to Zenaide Still, we will all be met with that smile, that light, that unforgettable love.

community since 1918. In our "125th year" 

anniversary celebration this year, we continue to 

demonstrate our belief in the future of one of the

a wide range of items for patients, staff, visitors, 

family and friends, open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am till 5:30 pm. 

While shopping, you can enjoy a cup of Green Mountain coffee, a 

cappuccino, milkshake or a sandwich. Gift wrapping and delivery, including 

shipping, are available. 

The shop carries fresh flowers, greeting cards, jewelry, candles, home 

accessories, baby gifts, children’s items and more. 

Proceeds from the gift shop benefit the Auxiliary’s mission of support to
