Project Description<br />

<strong>Fundations</strong> is a research- based program adopted by the District to instruct students<br />

in word study in grades kindergarten through third grade as part of our balanced<br />

literacy approach to reading instruction. Teachers incorporate a 30-minute daily<br />

<strong>Fundations</strong> lesson into their language arts classroom instruction. <strong>Fundations</strong> lessons<br />

focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet<br />

awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary,<br />

fluency, and spelling. Critical thinking, speaking and listening skills are practiced<br />

during Storytime activities. Furthermore, targeted small group intervention is<br />

available for students in the lowest 30th percentile.<br />

The following <strong>Pacing</strong> <strong>Guide</strong> includes dates in which classes on each grade will cover<br />

key word study concepts and multi-sensory activities to support student learning.
