Project Description 

Fundations is a research- based program adopted by the District to instruct students 

in word study in grades kindergarten through third grade as part of our balanced 

literacy approach to reading instruction. Teachers incorporate a 30-minute daily 

Fundations lesson into their language arts classroom instruction. Fundations lessons 

focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet 

awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, 

fluency, and spelling. Critical thinking, speaking and listening skills are practiced 

during Storytime activities. Furthermore, targeted small group intervention is 

available for students in the lowest 30th percentile. 

The following Pacing Guide includes dates in which classes on each grade will cover 

key word study concepts and multi-sensory activities to support student learning.
