Public & Postal Auction No. 133
Tuesday, July 7th 2009 at 7.30 p.m.
Welcome to our July sale which is particularly bulky. One of our clients has had
a clear out of his den (probably before his better half went ballistic) and has
consigned a large number of box lots which have largely been unchecked.
Probably an ideal time to buy before everybody buys boxes to sort in the winter.
We also have some nice covers from a postal history accumulation, some very
modern unmounted collections etc.
John was delayed getting to the last sale. He had been to a 2010 meeting in
London. On the way back he filled up with diesel and got onto the M11. Just
past the M25 junction his car started to overheat so he pulled onto the hard
shoulder and got out to ring the RAC. On looking back he realised that the
steam was in fact smoke and that it was increasing. So the phone call became
999 to the Fire Brigade. By the time they had arrived the car was burning
fiercely, the motorway was closed for about 15 minutes and the car was a shell.
A few minutes later the sole remaining tyre caught fire; the Fire Brigade were
recalled and again the motorway was closed. One or two of our clients on the
way to the sale were delayed! Fortunately nobody was hurt and it was not the
previous day when there were a number of auction lots on board!
So I had been to a 2010 meeting. This will be at the BDC in Islington (the same
venue as Stampex) from 8th-15thMay 2010 as part of the Festival of Stamps.
We will be there on a large stand on the gallery. There has been controversy
that the show venue is not as big as 2000 or 1990 but very few Post Offices will
underwrite such a large event and Royal Mail is no exception. All the dealers
stands will be there together with the competitive displays which will be changed
midway through the show. So an excuse to visit more than once.
The ancillary displays such as the Royal collection, the British Postal Museum &
Archives etc will display at other venues for a longer period. There will also be
regional shows as part of the Festival. So 2010 – the 170th Anniversary of Universal
Penny Postage and the 1d black & 2d blue – will be a real philatelic year.
This month we will be at the York Fair on the 17th & 18th July at the
Racecourse. If you are visiting please come and say hello and we can of course
take in lots for future sale.
