Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award for Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric Distinguished Professor Philippe-Joseph Salazar, Director of the Centre of Rhetoric Studies, was named the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Harry Oppenheimer Fellowship Award. The award, initiated by the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust in 2001, ‘focuses unambiguously on excellence and is granted to candidates of the highest calibre to enable them to undertake a programme of cutting edge, internationally significant work’. It is considered as the premier research award in South Africa. Professor Salazar’s work in rhetoric studies is particularly relevant to South Africa’s developing democracy. The award will enable him to begin research, while in residence at George Washington University, on a book primarily focused on American founding president George Washington – as a template for understanding what he terms ‘presidential ethics’. He believes that a rhetorical enquiry into presidential ethics has local relevance, in the same way that his forthcoming book Hyperpolitics (Paris, October 2009) was conceived as a gesture of scholarly engagement with the French presidential régime. 137
