Carshalton Boys
We began this new school year with more than thirty of our students
going off to university, a record for the school; and of course the arrival
of our new Year 7 students.
From the moment a student joins Carshalton Boys he has opportunities
to succeed. We’re proud of what our students achieve, and at times like
our Celebration Evening, enjoyment of that success is written on the
faces of students and their families.
In this first newsletter of the year you can glimpse some of the range
of activities your sons will have the opportunity to enjoy in their time at
the school. As well as academic success, there is sport to look forward
to, school visits, international contacts, even growing and eating good
food!
On page 2 are two emails the school has received from parents. Messages
like these confirm us in our commitment to ‘making a difference’ in
the lives of our students.
A warm welcome to the new school year at Carshalton Boys.
… making a difference
October
2011
From a new Year 7 parent...
Forgive me for interrupting what is probably
your busiest time of the day but I wanted to
convey my gratitude.
My son started Year 7 this year knowing only
one other pupil so I expected the settling in
process to take a while. Not so. I would say
he settled in within 2 days!
He is absolutely full of stories and chat from
the time he comes home until (literally) he is
putting his head on the pillow!
I cannot express what a pleasure and relief
this is to an anxious parent. I knew your
school was the number one choice for us but
it still worried me.
He is loving every minute of it to the extent
that he came in last night to help at the open
evening. He said he wanted to try and tell the
prospective pupils how nice the school and
everyone in it is.
What a remarkable accolade that is to you,
the staff and the entire school.
So Mr Barber, I thank you. •
... and from a prospective parent
I would like to thank you for allowing us
to attend your open evening held on 26
September 2011.
I previously emailed you to confirm that our
attendance would be OK as my son is still in
Year 5. As per this previous email I explained
that my son has dreamed of progressing to
Carshalton Boys since he was very little, your
open evening opened his mind even further
and he is now so excited about moving into
KS3.
As a family we all wish that it was possible to
skip a year and apply for his place now.
My son has be truly inspired by the displays,
interactive sessions laid out and the way
current staff and pupils present the school
with true passion and enthusiasm.
It must be said that it is a testament to your
school that there were teachers available to
talk to that approached and remembered
my husband from his time as a student of
Carshalton Boys in the 1990s.
We all felt comfortable in the electric and
exciting atmosphere created whilst we were
walking around.
We have been to other open evenings and
not one has compared to the standards set by
Carshalton Boys.
May I ask that this email be passed on to the
Headteacher so he may be made aware of
the fantastic job done both by teachers and
students during the evening.
Please also pass on my personal thanks and
appreciation to the students involved in the
setting up the evening and the provision of
tours around the school. They provided us
with a great deal of information and positive
responses to our questions.
We look forward to applying for a place at
Carshalton Boys next year. •
Celebration Evening 2011
The picture on the front of this newsletter was
taken on Thursday 15 September when we
held our second Celebration Evening at the
Secombe Centre in Sutton.
Students received prizes for their outstanding
contributions to the school, not only for their
academic excellence but also their contribution
to the Arts, PE and the community.
The evening was enjoyed by all, including our
guests The Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Gerry
Jerome and Nichola Hegarty, the producer of
The Only Way is Essex. Edwina Rozek •
History Department Trip to the
First World War Battlefields of
Belgium and France
The History Department ran another popular
and successful trip to the First World War battlefields
of Ypres and the Somme last week.
Sixty-one Year 9 pupils visited a variety of sites
including museums, memorials, cemeteries and
the very muddy First World War Trenches and
tunnels.
They also attended the Last Post Ceremony at
the Menin Gate where they were very moved
to see the names of the thousands who went
missing in action in the Ypres area during the
war.
This experience will aid the boys with their
work in Year 9, including the on-going trench
model homework project.
The boys represented the school, their parents
and their country very well and showed
enormous respect at all of the places visited.
This was commented on by members of the
public who were also very impressed by the
boys’ knowledge.
Well done to all the boys and a special thanks
to Mr Farr, Miss Bullin, Mr Sims, Miss Antrobus
and Mrs Scanella for all their hard work and
support. Lucy Collins Head of History •
History Department Trip to
Mountfitchet Castle
On Monday 3 October almost 200 Year 7s
visited Mountfitchet Castle in Stanstead as
part of their studies on medieval castles. They
were accompanied by thirteen members of
staff including some of their tutors and Mr
Lambert.
The boys found the visit very interesting and
enjoyed exploring the reconstructed motte
and bailey castle, which included features such
as the Great Hall, prison, chapel and armoury.
The medieval age was brought back to life
through a number of displays that allowed
pupils to see, hear and even smell different
aspects of everyday life in a medieval castle.
The boys were able to try on some of the
armour to get an idea of what it would’ve felt
like to be a medieval soldier going in to battle
during the age of William the Conqueror. They
also bought food for the various animals who
seemed to be more interested in eating the
boys’ worksheets!
As ever, the boys did themselves and the
school proud by behaving really well and thus
ensuring that it was a very successful and
enjoyable trip during which everyone learned
a lot.
Additional praise must go to 7N and 7P
who behaved impeccably despite being on
the coach that was extremely delayed. Special
thanks to Miss Flynn, Ms Thomas and Mr
Brooks for looking after these boys so well.
Finally, our sincere apologies to all parents for
the inconvenience that this delay caused.
Many thanks, as always, to all those who contribute
to making history department trips a
success. Lucy Collins Head of History •
Silver success for CBSC growers!
Following on from the school’s success in
the Sutton in Bloom competition last year,
we set our sights high and entered the London
in Bloom competition.
Towards the end of last term we were visited
by the judges who assessed the school on a
number of criteria – food growing opportunities
for pupils, promotion of environmentally
friendly practices and the general appearance
of the whole school grounds.
The judges were very positive on the day and
over the summer we were duly informed that
the school had won a silver award!
This represents a fantastic achievement and
recognises the hard work of all those involved
in food growing activities both pupils and staff
alike. Ben Howard •
Healthy Eating is on the agenda!
As part of the new PE Health initiative Year 8
students have been embarking on a healthy
lifestyles programme. Focusing on the different
lifestyle factors the students have been
examining the impact of diet upon their health
and wellbeing, for both the present and later
life.
This week saw the students make healthy
Smoothies and as you can see from the photo
it was a massive success! Look out for the
health tips in the CBSC weekly on how we
can all stay fit and healthy.
Going Dutch
The PE department hosted a group of Year
9 and 10 ‘masterclass’ pupils from Holland
who were over in London looking at the
impact of the Olympic Games on Sport and
Education.
The Dutch students and teachers were very
impressed with what they saw, and grateful for
the opportunity.
They discussed leadership with our BTEC
students; opportunity, provision, esteem and
legacy with our A2 pupils; training methods
for Olympic athletes with our Year 10s and
debated the benefits of hosting the games
with our Year 9s.
Particular thanks should go to Mr Howard
who hosted the debate, which provoked
some lively discussion and surprising
viewpoints from both sides. The PE
Department •
London 9-a-side Senior Rugby League Tournament
The festival itself was played in a great spirit
and the competition organisers were especially
impressed with the sportsmanship and
conduct of the CBSC players.
Both pools were hotly contested with Southgate
and Carshalton Boys Sports College winning
their pools and qualifying for the final.
During the pool stages, CBSC went through
undefeated seeing off challenges from several
schools including Harris Academy, Filton, Dunraven
and Bromley.
Football Champions at Wilsons
The Year 7 Football team were crowned
champions at the annual Wilson’s 7-a-side
Tournament.
Playing teams from across Surrey and London
the boys were undefeated all-day long, playing
some audacious football.
The boys topped the league stages before
eventually going on to beat hosts Wilson’s 3-1
The final itself was a very intense and competitive
match which the score line reflected.
At the end of normal time it was all tied up
at 12-12, which lead to a ‘golden try scenario’.
Unfortunately 4 minutes into extra time,
Southgate broke the line and crossed over for
the winning try. It was a disheartening finish
to what was a brilliant show of determination
and commitment.
I was very proud of each and every player for
the way they conducted themselves on and
off the field. The PE Department •
in the final.
They were a real credit to themselves and the
school. The team was: Mitchell Moser, Stephen
McIntosh, Kayode Badejo, Louis Livramento,
Harry Manners, Abel Kialungila, Mason Seagroatt,
Donny Williamson, Luke Guest. The PE
