Early on a fine November morning, bags packed, we set
off from Squash Wales HQ, a motley crew of u15's and
u19's. With our leader at the wheel, Heathrow was just a
few hours away in the rented and fortunately insured mini
bus. After an uneventful flight we arrived at the Holiday Inn
in Belgium. This was to be our base for the next 4 days,
with restaurant, pool, health spa and over 200 squash
players. It was going to be difficult not to miss home!
Concentration was the order of the day. A difficult task
with so many distractions. Our mission was clear - to play
decent, consistent squash (to keep our leader happy),
whilst continuing to promote good relations and socialise
with the home nations (and others who happened to be
around) throughout.
We all gave 110% and tried to play good squash as well.
The Belgium Trip: A players account
The ever-present Mr Robertson supported, encouraged
and motivated throughout the tournament and we all
benefited from his experience as a world class player
and coach.
The facilities at the venue were first class with 18
championship courts and all matches running to time -
quite an achievement by the organisers. This was an
experience not to be missed especially as we all had
ample opportunity to practice our foreign languages.
Upon returning home and having time to ponder, I
realised there were a few loose ends that needed to be
tidied up, like why was my Newport roommate speaking
with an American accent on the flight home and would
we get a chauffeur next time? These things, among
others, are better left unanswered!
Welsh Ladies no1 goes from strength to
strength in 2007 WISPA rankings
Squash Wales congratulate Tegwen Malik on her excellent
achievement starting 2007 ranked inside the top twenty
at number nineteen in the WISPA rankings.
This is a superb achievement and testament to her hard work,
dedication and commitment through 2006. Tegwen achievements
in 2006 have been significant, culminating in reaching the final of
the Oslo Open and beating a top ten player, Jenny Duncalf, in
reaching the semi final of the Monte Carlo Open.
From a ranking of 27 in September to 19 in January is a major
achievement and I am sure you will all join us in wishing her
continued success through 2007 and beyond.
Conwy Junior
Development Tournament
Le Sport Health & Fitness - 21st January 2007
A total of 40 development juniors (28 boys and 12 girls)
entered the tournament. The players came from the Conwy,
Gwynedd and Tywyn area with one player from Flintshire. The
format was round robin with all players guaranteed 3
matches and on the day 9 categories went ahead with 60
matches scheduled and ages ranged from 7 - 14. Special
thanks to all the players, parents, staff of Le Sport Health &
Fitness and coaches, with special mention to Mark Carnall,
Nick Wilson and Arwel Jones as well as all the junior markers.
Thanks to Tywyn players and parents for making the effort
again (2 hours drive). The enthusiasm of the players (some
who have never played in a match, never mind a
tournament before) was really encouraging. They enjoyed the
day socially and competitively. Well done to all involved.
