Shireoaks Welfare Sports & Social Club What’s On.... Shireoaks Welfare, Sports and Social Club has revealed a full programme for the next three months. From tales of Arabian nights and the sounds of country music to football and quiz nights, the Shireoaks Club will be playing host to a raft of entertainment, sporting fixtures and social events. Put Saturday 1st October in your diary for a special Charity Night at the club in aid of the MacMillan Nurse Appeal. Tickets cost £5. There will be performances plus a grand raffle in aid of the charity that raises vital funds to pay for nursing support for people affected by cancer. A performance by the Children’s Theatre is sure to draw in families the following month. They will be performing Arabian Nights on Tuesday 8th November from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8 for adults, £5 for children, £6 for concessionary tickets and £20 for family of four. Club opening hours Daily between 7pm and 11pm Saturday & Sunday lunchtimes between 12 and 3pm Room hire Rooms are available £50 per day, plus £20 per hour for extensions. (£20 of this is refundable if the place is left clean and there are no breakages.) Price includes bar facilities, concert room, kitchen and pavilion. Cooking facilities are by request. Wat-er perfect day! Shireoaks Duck Race has become a firm favourite in the village’s calendar attracting crowds every year. Helen Hall, President of the Shireoaks and District Women’s Institute, who organise the annual event, talks about the 28th village duck race… Well, the fingers and toes crossed the week before seemed to do the trick with the glorious sunshine dominating this year’s Duck Race Day. The ducks were limbering up on the village garden before setting out on their marathon swim from Cinder Hill, ensuring they retained enough energy to navigate the ‘rapids’ of the Ryton. While the gallant heroes of the waterfowl world made their way past the river obstacles, the excited spectators made known their predictions of how long the race would take. Others took advantage of the bargains on the tombola and bric-a-brac stalls and the other attractions in the village garden. Duck number 555 was the gold medal winner and the complete list of winning ducks and prize winners was put up in the Post Office and A. Hunt Butcher’s afterwards. In addition to this, Commando Joe offered youngsters the opportunity to burn off some energy in the area by the church. Meanwhile, the less intrepid sampled the cake and refreshments on offer in the village hall. Other stalls in the village hall, ranging from stained glass to jewellery, were tempting enough to tease the pocket. And the WI cakes and preserves stall once more enabled the ‘less culinary skilled’ amongst us to impress the family at the tea table! As well as raising funds for the WI the event also raised funds to donate to Bassetlaw Hospice, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance, the Hallamshire branch of the PBC Foundation, St Luke’s, Shireoaks Newsletter and Parish Council. Thanks to everyone who contributed to and helped on the day. Finally, another huge thank you to the sponsors who supported the event in a number of ways, from donating prizes to actively becoming involved in the event. They included: Wincanton PLC; Sainsburys; Shireoaks Post Office; A Hunt, Butchers; Shireoaks Fish and Chips; Haggonfields Forge; Wilkinson’s; Tesco; Mis-chief Hair Salon; Beautique and Parnhams Ice Cream. The WI hopes you enjoyed the day and the group looks forward to seeing you again next year! A big thank you to Shireoaks Women’s Institute for their donation to the Shireoaks Newsletter. During the annual Duck Race event the WI raised funds for several local charities and organisations including our newsletter. Many thanks. Unlocking tales of the past A glimpse into the life of one of Elizabethan England’s most powerful women will be revealed at the next meeting of Shireoaks Women’s Institute. Bess of Hardwick, who was the individual behind the building of Chesterfield’s famed Hardwick Hall, will be the focus of the talk at September’s meeting. The talk will give an insight into the inspiring tale of the lady who moved up the ranks to become the richest woman in England with links to Royalty. The talk will take place in Shireoaks Village Hall on 15th September. The meeting is open to new members too. New members are always welcome to go along to meetings. They take place on the third Thursday of each month between 7pm and 9.30pm. Guests are very welcome to either go along on the night or telephone Helen Hall on 487984 or Dawn Short on 478101 beforehand.
