Shireoaks Parish Council
£100 award up for grabs
Each year the Parish Council invites nominations for the
Chairman’s Young Achiever’s Award. This is an opportunity to
reward an individual or group of young people who have
achieved a high standard in their particular field of interest.
This could be in sport, education, the arts or service to the
community. The young people must be between the age of
five and 18 at the time of nomination. The Parish Council will
judge the entrants and the winner will receive £100, with
certificates of merit for other nominees. We hear so much
these days about the disruptive side of children’s activities
now is the time to champion those who quietly dedicate
themselves to achieving success or helping others. If you’d
like to nominate someone download the nomination forms
from the Parish Council’s website or get in touch with the
clerk to the council. The closing date is 31st October.
Misty morning at Shireoaks Marina
Parish Council Clerk, Adele Haddon,
provides a round-up of council activities.
Locals have their say on the future
of the village
A survey has gone out to all residents to get their views on
the future of the village and how they wish to see it
developed. This is a very important document which could
shape the future of the village and it is vital that everyone’s
views are heard. The results will be collated and give both
the District and Parish Council’s the opportunity to plan for
the future.
Skate park plans for Shireoaks
There may be a possibility of obtaining a skate park for the
young people of the village. There are a lot of hoops to jump
and negotiations regarding consent but the Parish Council
would like to know the residents’ views on such a project.
The proposed area would be at the top of Coach Road where
there is already a basketball net and tarmac area. Are you in
favour of this idea or perhaps you have other suggestions for
an activity for the young people? The Parish Council would
love to hear from you – especially if you are between 10 and
17. The playground, which was built last year has been a
great success, but is perhaps more for the younger children.
What would you like to see in the village?
Diamond Jubilee celebrations
The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated next June
and the Parish Council is keen to ensure that the event is
celebrated in some way in Shireoaks. Would you like to see a
permanent feature, a street party, a commemorative gift for
children or tree planting? If you have any ideas please get in
touch with the clerk so that all ideas can be discussed at the
next meeting.
New team
The Parish Council is delighted that some new volunteers
have come forward to continue the invaluable Shireoaks
Newsletter and wishes them the best of luck.
More new councillors
There are still vacancies on the Parish Council. If anyone
would like to be considered for co-option please contact the
clerk for further information or an application form.
news from
St Luke’s School…
The Trip To Snibston
First we went to the discovery area and when we were in the discovery
area I pulled a car up. Then we went to the fashion gallery and we
looked at all the different clothes. Afterwards we went to the coal
mine and I went through the coal mine! Then we went to the
workshop and made some parachutes and other things. Then we
had lunch in a train carriage and then we went in the science play
and when we were doing the science play we went on the
climbing frames. After that we went in the water park, and it was
really fun.
Our Summer Fair
At the Summer Fair Thoresby class had two stalls they were called Hook-a-duck and Buried Treasure. There were many other stalls at
the fair such as a bouncy castle, throw the sponge at Mr Delafield, raffle, archery, and a popcorn stall. Thoresby class in total raised
£60 from our two stalls. The day at the Summer Fair was very fun! It was also exciting and it looked like everybody enjoyed it.
Creswell class had two stalls at the summer fair. One was nail painting and the other was popcorn. Loads of people liked the look of
the popcorn and loads of people came back from the nail painting with wonderful colours on their nails. Creswell class from the
summer fair made £43 in total from two stalls.
Rufford class had plenty of stores. They had a bouncy castle, tin-can-ally, making gliders and making friendship bracelets.
Sherwood class sold unwanted toys and had fun throwing the sponge at Mr Delafield. All the money they raised went very kindly to
the PTFA.
Welbeck class sold ornaments, friendship bracelets and ran a bake sale. They managed to raise £60! It was a fantastic day and
everyone had so much fun!
Rufford class goes to Cannon Hall
I enjoyed the trip to Cannon Hall. I liked dressing up in Victorian
costume and going on a coach. When we got there I got off the
coach and saw it was a really big place. We made vegetable soup.
We then went upstairs and saw the master’s dining table. It was
very long. There was lots of yummy food and we saw some old
paintings of rich people. I saw a leopard skin rug and it made me
sad. But I know they had to use animal skins in Victorian times.
The library was awesome.
We went downstairs and outside. It was very big with lots of concrete. We cleaned some really dirty shoes and a saddle. Then we
cleaned some mugs and banged the dust out of a rug with a metal bat. We then went back inside and cleaned lots of clothes. I
loved making butter and when we washed our hands we played with some great wooden toys. Then we went back into the
servants’ dining room and ate the food we had made. It was very tasty.
When it was time to go back to school we got on the coach. It had been a long day but I had lots of fun.
Church celebrates 150 years
Back in 1861 the then Prince of Wales didn’t have
to face the same glare of the media that his
great-great-great grandson, William, does these
days. But that’s not to say his visit to Shireoaks
went by unnoticed.
When the young 19-year-old Prince - who was later to
become King Edward VII - arrived in the village he was
greeted by dignitaries and huge crowds. And as he laid
the foundation stone of the church on St Luke’s Day it was to mark an important historic moment for the village.
Next month St Luke’s Church will be celebrating that moment by marking its 150th anniversary with a
series of events, which will conclude with a Service of Thanksgiving on Sunday 16th October.
The celebrations will take into account the history of the church, which was built as a present to the village by the
5th Duke of Newcastle, Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham-Clinton. As owner of Shireoaks Colliery and a religious man,
he was concerned for the welfare – and particularly the spiritual welfare – of his workforce.
He handed over a cool £4,000 to architect Thomas Chambers Hine to provide the village with a church. He only
asked that Hine should create enough space for a congregation of 500 and promised to stump up more money if it
was needed.
6
Shireoaks Newsletter - “Reaching the Community”
Hine designed a building of High Church style to be
made of stone from the nearby Steetley quarry. Two
years after the young prince laid the foundation
stone, the church was dedicated.
Back then the church boasted an impressive spire but
this was removed in 1973 as it was deemed unsafe.
Today St Luke’s remains a Grade II listed building and
continues to provide a backdrop to prayer, services,
community activities and family celebrations of
marriages and baptisms.
During the celebration weekend in October there
will be a series of events including a Flower Festival.
Groups throughout the village will be contributing
to the floral arrangements, which will be displayed
within the church. There will also be an historical
exhibition and musical event.
A big thank you to St Luke's Church for their
donation to the Shireoaks Newsletter.
Shireoaks Local History Group
Shireoaks in 1861 was a very different place than it is today. The coming of the colliery in 1854 had increased the population 5
times. The number of houses had increased three fold and what was once a relatively sleepy little village was beginning to
boom.
The village had for a long time had a grocery shop situated at what is now 65 Shireoaks Row and this continued to trade right
through until 1974. However with the increasing population the entrepreneurial spirit was about and two Retford men took
the opportunity to establish businesses in purpose built accommodation at the top of the newly built Shireoaks Row.
The first was John Palmer who, on finishing his butchery apprenticeship to Mr J Morley at Retford, took the bold step to set up
in business on his own at Shireoaks at only 19 years old. The business was to flourish and John became a stalwart of life in the
village and the surrounding area being regarded as one of the best judges of cattle in the area. The second son of Retford who
took the shop next to the butchers was Henry Smedley. His shop was a grocer and general store. Like John he was heavily
involved with village life being at one time a governor of the school and church warden as well as running his business virtually
single handed. Both men were buried in St Luke’s Graveyard when they died.
At the time of the laying of the church foundation stone the Row would not have
been completed. There were one or two farm houses to the north of the railway
line but no other properties. Shireoaks Road was the main focus of housing with
a number of stone built cottages, two farm houses (one now demolished), the
mill and its associated buildings, the Hall and all its outbuildings. What is now the
village hall was the village place of worship. On completion of the church the
building became the village school.
On the 15th and 16th October Shireoaks will be celebrating 150 years since the
laying of the foundation stone at St Luke’s Church.
Illustrated London News 1861 depiction of Prince of Wales visit
to Shireoaks Colliery. He went on later in the day to lay the
foundation stone of St Luke’s Church.
The history group will be putting on a exhibition of photos and memorabilia connected with the church. If you have any items,
photos, parish magazines, programmes of flowers festivals or anything that relates to St Luke’s please contact Bernie Ayton
on 483443 or email shireoaks1861-news@yahoo.co.uk so that your item can be copied and take its place in the exhibition.
So in October as you walk down to look at the exhibition, imagine the scene 150 years earlier. A different place from today!
Do you have a passion for history? Maybe you have a love of costume? Or perhaps you have an adoration of antiques,
medals and memorabilia?
The Shireoaks and District Local History Group is hosting a series of talks over the next few months giving an
insight into our past. The programme ranges from stories of a costume mistress to the history of stoneware.
The talks include:
6th September - Open air museums in the UK and Europe by Rodney Cousins
4th October - Medals and memorabilia of the Great War by Captain G.L.S. Dyer
1st November -’Little Brown Jug’ (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Stoneware) by Adrian Henstock
6th December - ’Rags to Riches’ (Stories of a Costume Mistress) by Judy Colby
Everyone is welcome to go along to the meetings, which are held at Shireoaks Village Hall on the above dates
starting at 7.30pm. Admission is £2.50. For further details call Bernie Ayton on 483443.
Family to mark anniversary with
fundraising event
Back in February 2009 the Stones family were
celebrating the birth of the latest addition to their
family – William. Like all babies, the new arrival
was to change the lives of his family forever. And it
also began a journey that they never imagined.
At a little over a year old, the normally happy-golucky
baby developed breathing complications and
was taken into hospital. It then became clear that
he was seriously ill. He suffered a cardiac arrest and
due to a lack of oxygen and blood flow to his brain
became very ill and suffered brain injury.
“He was in hospital for six months and lost his
ability to do almost everything,” explained dad
Dave. “It was unclear whether he could see or hear.
He couldn’t feed and relied on a tube through his
nose and he had no movement. Nothing.”
“From then we would dive deep into an unknown world: the
world of disability and a harsh realisation that the things in
life that you thought actually mattered, such as materialistic
things, actually didn’t matter at all.”
Their lives were turned upside down as William
underwent a series of therapies before being diagnosed
with Athetoid Cerebal Palsy. Then things took a turn for
the worse and William had to undergo major heart
surgery. Thankfully the surgery was a success and the now two-anda-half–year-old
is progressing well.
Added Dave: “William is now home and through dedication and hard
work from his mum, Julie, he is such a joy to be with. He’s
now got all his sight back, can crawl, stands up and is
doing so well, he’s the same smiley little boy we nearly
lost so many times during the early days.”
To celebrate the anniversary of William’s recovery, the
family have organised a race night that will help raise
awareness of William’s condition and help fund his
continued treatments. The fundraising event will take place
on 9th September in Leeds, which is where Dave’s place of
business is. However, transport will be provided from the local
area as many family and friends live in Shireoaks.
What’s the buzz?
These days more and more of us are getting back to our
roots. Interest in food gardening has exploded from
simply growing herbs on the window sill and tomatoes on
the patio to raising chickens and tending vegetable
gardens.
Growing our own food has become a healthy trend.
Whether it’s shopping at farmers’ markets or baking our
own bread, we’re all having a go. For some keeping
honeybees, hens and vegetable gardens is part and parcel
of being self-sufficient and getting back to the land.
For one couple, Margaret and Chris Edge, beekeeping is
far from a new trend. It has been a way of life for them
for many years.
Margaret provides an insight into the world of a
beekeeper with her diary of the last few months...
April: After the deep and very long winter, Spring advanced very quickly in 2011. All the flowers seemed to
want to come out at the same time and many had gone by the time they are usually at their peak. All the apple
and pear blossom in our garden had finished by the end of April and there were no daffodils left out at Easter.
The May blossom was out in the middle of April and the fruit trees were already forming little fruits.
Thankfully all the bee colonies except one came through the bitter winter intact. Cold weather doesn't do them
any harm but long spells of damp and dreary weather does and we did not get much of that in February and
March. In fact this is one of the best and warmest spring we have known.
May: The bees were soon busy foraging on the Spring flowers and blossom and the population in the hives
grew rapidly. We have had several swarms already which Chris has caught and hived to start new colonies. We
had a small crop of honey from the hives at home in May and all the other sites are doing well.
June: We were invited to give a talk for the Friends of Mr Straw's House group. The Straw brothers kept several
colonies of bees in their garden in Worksop, now owned by the National Trust. The dilapidated remains of the
hives can still be seen in the old garden that is used as the car park.
We also had our usual stall with an observation hive at
the Carnival in June, which was very popular again. It's
great to see children and adults alike interested in the life
cycle of the honey bee and not just the honey.
We still have three colonies of bees in the walled garden
at Clumber Park which seemed intent on swarming. Chris
had to collect two from the base of a nearby cardoon in
the same week!
July/August: Mid July and the weather picked up again.
Several of the hives have re-queened and we had three
swarms in one week which made it feel like Spring all
over again. There are still plenty of garden flowers for the
bees to forage on. Chris will soon be preparing the
colonies for Winter.
Shireoaks Newsletter - “Reaching the Community”
Wat-er perfect day!
Shireoaks Duck Race has become a firm
favourite in the village’s calendar attracting
crowds every year. Helen Hall, President of the
Shireoaks and District Women’s Institute, who
organise the annual event, talks about the 28th
village duck race…
Well, the fingers and toes crossed the week before
seemed to do the trick with the glorious sunshine
dominating this year’s Duck Race Day. The ducks were
limbering up on the village garden before setting out
on their marathon swim from Cinder Hill, ensuring
they retained enough energy to navigate the ‘rapids’
of the Ryton.
While the gallant heroes of the waterfowl world
made their way past the river obstacles, the excited
spectators made known their predictions of how long
the race would take.
Others took advantage of the bargains on the
tombola and bric-a-brac stalls and the other
attractions in the village garden. Duck number 555
was the gold medal winner and the complete list of
winning ducks and prize winners was put up in the
Post Office and A. Hunt Butcher’s afterwards.
In addition to this, Commando Joe offered youngsters
the opportunity to burn off some energy in the area
by the church. Meanwhile, the less intrepid sampled
the cake and refreshments on offer in the village hall.
Other stalls in the village hall, ranging from stained
glass to jewellery, were tempting enough to tease the
pocket. And the WI cakes and preserves stall once
more enabled the ‘less culinary skilled’ amongst us to
impress the family at the
tea table!
As well as raising funds for
the WI the event also
raised funds to donate to
Bassetlaw Hospice,
Nottinghamshire and
Lincolnshire Air Ambulance,
the Hallamshire branch of the
PBC Foundation, St Luke’s, Shireoaks Newsletter and
Parish Council.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to and helped
on the day. Finally, another huge thank you to the
sponsors who supported the event in a number of
ways, from donating prizes to actively becoming
involved in the event. They included: Wincanton PLC;
Sainsburys; Shireoaks Post Office; A Hunt, Butchers;
Shireoaks Fish and Chips; Haggonfields Forge;
Wilkinson’s; Tesco; Mis-chief Hair Salon; Beautique and
Parnhams Ice Cream.
The WI hopes you enjoyed the day and the group
looks forward to seeing you again next year!
A big thank you to Shireoaks Women’s Institute
for their donation to the Shireoaks Newsletter.
During the annual Duck Race event the WI raised funds
for several local charities and organisations including
our newsletter. Many thanks.
A step back in time
Pete Brammer retells the story of
a local lad...
Killed on Lindrick Common
In the year of 1889,
A January day with a chill,
News came to Mr Edison,
The owner of Shireoaks Mill.
‘Twas news of his loyal labourer,
John Mills aged 37,
Killed on Lindrick Common,
His soul had gone to heaven.
Just before eight that Wednesday morn,
He’d arrived to load his flour,
Two horses breathed steam, in their traces,
Well muscled and full of power.
A collier called Eli Harvey,
Set off with Mills on that day,
Son of Emmanual Harvey,
Aboard his horse and dray.
As they crossed over Lindrick Common,
Around about half past four,
Whilst riding on the wagon shafts,
A thing he’d done, many times before.
But something now startled the horses,
And off they galloped at speed,
Leaving him wide eyed with terror,
Just what the chap didn’t need.
Jumping off, he soon lost his balance,
Then under the wheels he did roll,
About to be joining his maker,
Who was waiting to welcome his soul.
John was found by a farmer called Hellewell,
From Shireoaks it’s understood,
His head being covered in bruises,
And laying in a puddle of blood.
He was conveyed to the Loyal Trooper,
Where the deceased had his very last drink,
Laid out he was in a back room,
A practice they did then, I think.
He was buried in a grave here in Shireoaks,
With friends and relations all near,
Wife Ann and seven little children,
His family that he loved most dear.
Beth overcomes
challenge for
charity feat
When seasoned fundraiser Beth Elkington set herself
the challenge to walk more than 40 miles to raise cash
for a local charity little did she know just what was
ahead of her.
Setting out from Sheffield’s Ladybower Reservoir
among a group of more than 80 walkers, the Zumba
teacher was in her element. She had done charity
challenges before and didn’t think this would be any
different. Part way into the walk, however, disaster
struck and she started to feel severe discomfort in one
of her feet. In fact, she later learned it was a
suspected stress fracture with severe muscle damage.
But despite the pain Beth carried on in order to raise
much-needed funds for the Landmarks College, a
special educational needs college in Creswell, where
she works as a Learning Support Assistant.
“The college is a charitable organisation and I see how
important funding is and the difference it can make
for our learners,” said Beth. “Fundraising is something
I feel passionate about as well as challenging myself
to help others.”
She managed to walk the mammoth 41.5 miles within
12 hours to the cheers of friends and family who
greeted her at the finishing point at the Royal Oak in
Whitwell.
Beth, 23, has previously completed charity challenges
for the NSPCC, Muscular Dystrophy Campaign,
Norsaca, UNICEF, IDEX among others and this time
raised £200 for Landmarks College.
Determined not to let her injuries put her off she
added: “Getting injured will not affect my eagerness
to complete another challenge any time soon…But
maybe my next challenge will have to be a swim!”
Carnival fever hits Shireoaks
Crowds lined the streets, got out their glad rags and entered
into the carnival spirit as they watched the annual parade
through Shireoaks.
With the theme for the day being the film, Grease, the village
rocked to the sounds of the soundtrack as the parade made
its way to the grounds at the Hewitt Arms.
Carnival Queen, Chloe Sanders, and Escort, Guy Corbin, led
the procession accompanied by scores of people dressed as
Pink Ladies or in costume as T-Birds.
The afternoon’s activities were opened by ‘Danny’ and ‘Sandy’ and there
were dance displays by St Luke’s School and Redlands School as well as
the annual Tug Of War competition. Crowds were able to wander
around the grounds soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying various
events and checking out the stalls.
The balloon race competition was won by Phoebe Ashman, of
Gateford, whose balloon ticket was returned from Grimsby!
It was celebrations all round for Eleanor Bekisz, who was the winner of
Shireoaks Got Talent final. Eleanor was among the line up of entertainment at the
High School Disco, which was held the previous night in the village hall to kick off the carnival
celebrations. Families watched on as Eleanor, playing the guitar, scooped the 2011 winning title.
Jeanette Adams, one of the Carnival organisers, said: “Saturday 9th July was a lovely sunny day, all set for
Shireoaks’ annual Carnival. The floats looked fabulous, the Carnival queen, escort and entourage gorgeous and the
field set up for an afternoon of fun.”
“All this would not have been possible if it wasn’t for a lot of people ‘behind the scenes’. We would like
to thank everyone who helped to make the day such a success”.
End of year report
Charity No. 1069794
As the youngsters at pre-school say farewell to some of their friends and
wish them well in their new school, childcare manager Louise Passaseo
takes a look at the past year…
We started the academic year well with a new garden area, furniture and
resources for the pre-school thanks to a grant awarded by
Nottinghamshire County Council. It took a lot of hard work from the
committee and manager but we got there in the end. Now Little
Acorns looks better than ever.
And that is just what Ofsted said when they visited us. They
awarded us with an ‘Outstanding’ report again for the second time
in three years! Everyone was ecstatic to be given this wonderful result but
it just goes to show if you put the hard work in you get the results you deserve.
We had two fairs over the year, which raised over £600 for pre-school funds. We also
held a pamper night and the money raised funded a trip for the children to
go to Sundown Adventure Land.
Little Acorns also raised funds for charity this year. We supported Red
Nose Day with a fancy dress day and held a sponsored toddle on St
Luke’s school field that raised more than £150 for Barnado’s.
One of the highlights of the year was taking part in the village carnival.
We all got excited about our costumes and we had our own Sandy and
Danny!
We said farewell to 24 children at the end of July as they prepared to go up
to school in September. This year we’re feeding into eight different schools,
which is a record for us. You may think that we now have lots of places but
this is not the case. We are busier than ever and we will be full most days from
September. It is wonderful to see the pre-school going from strength to strength and we are very proud of the service
we offer to the children and their families.
The next term will see some changes to the premises as the committee is adding a multipurpose room. This is
something we have wanted to do for some time. It will enable us to have extra space where the children can have a
sleep or we can meet with parents and it gives the staff somewhere to sit in peace.
Parents who would like more details about the pre-school or would like to have a look around should contact
Louise on 506666 or just pop in for a chat.
becoming a volunteer member of the Nottinghamshire Crimestoppers Committee.
Volunteering provides a valuable opportunity to make an impact on reducing crime and playing your own
personal part in making your community safer. The Committee’s primary purpose is to promote contacting
Crimestoppers to get information on crime and criminal activity within the county. Its work is varied,
interesting and, at times, challenging. Activities include fund raising to meet costs, working in partnership with
the police, statutory bodies and other like minded groups to achieve crime reduction. Members are expected
to participate in the Committee’s activities utilising their expertise and experience to help the Committee
Summit’s up in
Shireoaks
Plans to spruce up Shireoaks’ woodlands and create a
viewing area at the hill summit are shaping up.
Thanks to funding from Nottinghamshire County
Council’s Local Improvement Scheme, the area is to be
transformed as a community green space.
Shireoaks Local History Group with the help of
Councillor Sybil Fielding secured the funding and have
been asking locals to vote on what they would like to
see on the hill top. Various options for the site range
from the creation of a stone plinth to the installation
of a sundial, extra seating or information panels.
Locals are also being urged to help look after the
woodlands and an appeal has been made for
volunteers. People are needed to carry out practical
work, help out with educational visits, lead walks and
help research the history of the area. Volunteers are
also needed to help form a committee or simply sign
up to being part of a ‘Friends’ group.
out in any way, please contact Bernie Ayton on 483443.
Celebrate the changing season
It's that time of year again when we slowly fade out of Summer and the nights begin to draw in.
With the unusually dry Spring and Summer this year we’re set for a particularly riotous autumnal show of vibrant
colours as the Summer turns into Autumn. Make the most of the change of the season and the crunch of the
Autumn leaves underfoot by heading out into the open air.
Take a walk along the canal and up to the woods or take a short drive and enjoy the spectacular display at
Worksop’s Hannah Park Wood, just off Sparken Hill. The Woodland Trust owned grove has an extensive path
network and has a free car park, which holds up to 10 cars.
Check out the changing colours of oak, beech, horse and sweet chestnut and lime trees and check the ground for
fallen conkers still in their spiny thick cases.
Gail Graham, VisitWoods project manager at the Woodland Trust said: “Autumn is such a great time when the
woods burst into a blaze of vibrant colours so we’d urge people to get out and about and enjoy the fresh air and
soak up the reds and golds of woods.”
“The days may be getting shorter but Autumn is one of the best seasons to get outdoors and enjoy what our
woodlands have to offer.”
For details of other woods to explore check out www.VisitWoods.org.uk.
If you want to look out for the signs of Autumn, check out the Woodland Trust’s website:
Malcolm Fritchley talks to the people who
work in the very hub of the community.
In recent years the Post Office has ‘reviewed’ the
number of branches it has. As we all know, what that
really means is that a lot of post offices were closed,
especially in more rural areas. Shireoaks though is
one of those rare but lucky villages that still has its
own post office; twice lucky, in fact, because not only
does it have a post office, but it has one that lies at
the heart of the village.
The post office itself offers all the services you’d
expect: postal services, banking, moneygrams, car
tax, holiday currency (Euros are kept in stock, but
other currency is easily ordered), holiday insurance,
savings, mobile phone top-ups, gift vouchers. Both
Sarah and Maxine have been given extensive
training so they can help you with any transactions
to do with these services.
Alongside all the Post Office services, the shop also
sells dry groceries. In fact, when I visited them, Sarah
and Maxine had just put together grocery orders for
a few housebound ladies, which were to be delivered
by Jean, a former postmistress and a stalwart of
Shireoaks Luncheon Club.
The two faces you’re most likely to see at the post
office belong to Sarah Draisey and Maxine Seeley.
Outside of working hours you might also see them
around the village walking their dogs, Ted and
Poppy. Both of them are keen walkers, so you’re
quite likely to see them on the footpaths around
Shireoaks or in Clumber Park. Maxine, together with
her husband Greg, also occasionally helps out at the
Shireoaks Welfare, Sports and Social Club.
A third face you might see in the Post Office is that
of Ann Thomas who steps in from time to time so
that Sarah can have well earned days off.
The Post Office used to sell newspapers too but since
the retirement of Sarah’s husband, Dave, only the
Worksop Guardian is sold there - though you can also
pick up a copy of the Trader or a copy of Shireoaks
Newsletter, of course. The shop has a much better
than average range of hand-made and designer
greetings cards too – something I was grateful to
discover when I almost forgot my wife’s and my
wedding anniversary!
Sarah and Maxine want to make sure that Shireoaks
keeps its Post Office and the only way of doing that
nowadays is to make sure it offers what the village
wants. They are keen to develop other services that
would be useful for people in the village and
perhaps save them from having to go into town. For
instance, a few months ago, they began offering a
dry cleaning service which they’re pleased to say is
working well. Sarah says they are also on the lookout
for other ideas - so if you have any thoughts, they’d
be only too happy to hear from you.
Vulcan’s flying visit
Living in Shireoaks you get used to the drone
of the small planes going into land at nearby
Netherthorpe Airfield.
The occasional aerobatic plane display might turn a
few heads as well as the rare sighting of a hot air
balloon floating gently over the rooftops. But no
one could miss the iconic Vulcan bomber plane that
flew over Shireoaks in time for the Netherthorpe
Open Day.
With its unique markings and its massive shape
against the skyline, it was quite a sight as it flew
slowly and smoothly over the village. It circled the aerodrome - far too large to land on the small field –
overawing onlookers before heading back home to Robin Hood Airport at Finningley.
The Vulcan, now the only flying one of its kind in the world, operated out of the airport when it was RAF
Finningley. Designed as a nuclear deterrent during the Cold War era it was used during the Falklands War in
1982 and the last Vulcan was withdrawn from service in 1984.
While some Vulcans remain grounded in private collections, this Vulcan was saved by enthusiasts and
underwent a major £6million restoration project to return it to flight. It now makes special appearances at air
displays including the Sunderland Air Show this Summer and carries out fly pasts.
Did you know?
• Netherthorpe is the smallest airfield in the UK.
• It has been an airfield since the First World War.
• It is now home to the Sheffield Aero Club and is a base for light aircraft.
• It is reported to have been used during the Second World War for the training of agents for special missions.
New season, new hobby?
There’s something about September and the beginning of Autumn that brings out the urge to try out
something new. No matter what your age, there’s always that new term feeling about this time of year.
If you’re feeling a bit stir crazy as the nights draw in and fancy having a go at something different there’s a
whole range of activities taking place at the Village Hall this Autumn.
The hall, right next to the church, hosts several groups throughout the week. From crafts right through to
Zumba, there’s something for everyone.
Activities include bingo, crafts, folk dance, history group, Women’s Institute get-togethers, luncheon club and
an over-60’s club. There are also regular Carnival Committee meetings to plan forthcoming village events.
Other activities range from tai chi, yoga and Zumba classes. The Zumba sessions, which began running last
October, have been stepped up and are now held on Thursday evenings as well as Monday evenings.
Meanwhile, for the youngsters there’s a cubs group, brownies and guides and hopefully starting soon a
youth group.
The Village Hall is also used by the Church for Sunday Club and other events and is available for hire. It often
hosts celebrations such as birthday parties and christenings.
For details about how to hire the Village Hall, contact the booking clerk, Peter Stanley, on 477391.
