The <strong>South</strong> <strong>African</strong> <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Rights</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> (SAHRC) wishes<br />

to acknowledge the contribution of the many individuals who<br />

assisted in the successful completion of this investigation.<br />

First, the outgoing SAHRC commissioners, chaired by Jody<br />

Kollapen and deputy chair Zonke Majodina, along with the<br />

previous chief executive officer, Advocate Tseliso Thipanyane,<br />

should be acknowledged for recognising the need for an<br />

investigation of this nature, approving the project, and<br />

providing strategic guidance in 2009.<br />

Atlantic Philanthropies funded the project. As senior researcher<br />

on the project, Tamlyn Monson designed and managed the<br />

research process, conducted the analysis of submissions<br />

and produced the written report. Additional desk research<br />

and administrative support was provided by Andrew Gorang.<br />

Fieldwork was conducted by Tamlyn Monson and Danzel van<br />

Zyl. Other staff of the SAHRC provided support to the project in<br />

various capacities: Joyce Tlou and Christine Jesseman (strategic<br />

guidance and advice); Danzel van Zyl, Kgamadi Kometsi and<br />
