Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that
I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are
born to eternal life.
Amen

A Reminder of the Holy
Many of you know that I served in the United States Air Force as a Chaplain in the Reserves
for 29 years. In the course of those years, I was mobilized (brought onto active duty
temporarily) twice, and throughout those 29 years I was working for over one month each
year on active-duty Air Force bases. One of the interesting phrases that the Air Force uses
to describe the ministry of its chaplains no matter what particular denomination they
represent is that a chaplain is expected to be "a reminder of the holy" for the airmen. I've
always liked that terminology very much. When I served at various bases around our country
and even around the world, I tried to do that as best I could in a variety of situations. I think
it is good for my parishioners to know that their tax dollars support the work of chaplains not
only in the Air Force but throughout the United States Armed Forces. And we are called to
do many things in the course of our ministry.
Working as a chapel team, my fellow chaplains and our assistants and I have tried to bring our
best efforts together to provide support for those men and women preparing for or returning
from deployment to overseas bases, to minister to their families at home, and to meet with
the family members of some of those brave men and women who have been injured or killed in
action in Iraq and Afghanistan. I've have the opportunity to counsel young airmen away from
home for the first time (and sometimes have felt that filling the role of a kindly father was
as important to them as filling the role of a pastor). We have tried to be "reminders of the
holy" to those who work at stateside bases fulfilling the mission of the Air Force.
I encourage everyone in the parish to remember the men and women of all our Armed Forces
when you pray. Those who currently serve in our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast
Guard are protecting our freedom, and sometimes putting their own lives on the line to do it.
At the very least, we should be praying for their safety and protection.
Maybe the idea of being "a reminder of the holy" might be something that can inspire all of us
during the coming weeks. It's not just something for an Air Force chaplain to do. It's
something that each one of us should be doing for each other. Just imagine how much good
might be accomplished in our communities and in our families if there were hundreds of
"reminders of the holy" for people to see and encounter each and every day of the year! If
only they could see the joy and the peace and the happiness that true religion brings, it could
change their lives! It's something beautiful and powerful to think about!
See you in church!
Father Charlie

Parish Office & Calendars
♦ Parish Registration: In order that we may better serve you, please
register in the parish. This way you are known to us when
requesting the services of the church. Registration forms are
available in the literature rack in the vestibule or on the parish web
site. Also, please notify the parish office of changes of address,
phone, or e-mail, or if you are moving out of the area. Changes can
be emailed to sedler@stfrancishenderson.org or simply drop a note
in the collection basket.
♦ Baptism: Baptisms for infants to six year olds are celebrated on the
second and fourth Sundays of most months at 1:00 p.m. Parents
should attend the baptism class usually held on the third Monday of
the month at 7:00 p.m. and then meet with one of the priests to
schedule the baptism. Next class: Monday, July 19th at 7:00
p.m. Contact Debbie Ely at 914-2175 for an appointment with one
of the priests.
♦ Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish as
soon as they become engaged because at least six months is
ordinarily necessary to fulfill marriage preparation requirements. At
least one party must be a registered, participating member of the
parish. The first step is for both parties to attend the Marriage
Information Meeting on the fourth Thursday of most months at 6:30
p.m. Next meeting: July 22nd. After that meeting, contact
Debbie for an appointment with one of the priests.
Important: Those with prior marriages, religious or civil, must make
an appointment with a priest prior to attending the Marriage
Information Meeting to determine freedom to marry. (This
requirement does not apply to those who are widowed.)
♦ Anointing of the Sick: The priest will often be able to anoint you
after Mass (except 7:45 a.m. Saturday & 4:00 p.m. Saturday
Mass). Please call the parish if you need to receive the anointing of
the sick at home. In emergency situations when the office is closed,
the answering service will relay the information to one of the priests.
In case of hospitalization, let the hospital staff know that you would
like to have the Catholic priest chaplain see you.
♦ Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please call the
parish office and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion will
visit you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff that
you are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy Communion.
♦ Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the parish
office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
♦ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament is celebrated on the first Friday of the month following
the 7:45 a.m. Mass and concluding with Evening Prayer and
Benediction at 6:30 p.m.
♦ Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, please contact the
parish before making arrangements with a mortuary. The parish
does not make funeral arrangements with the mortuary or other
businesses but only with loved ones of the deceased.
♦ House Blessings: For those who are new to our area, house
blessings are available by appointment. Please register in the parish
before requesting your house to be blessed.
♦ Car Blessings: The priest is available to bless your new car after
most Masses (except Saturdays at 7:45 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.).
