treatment?
Generally, we do not recommend that any cosmetic product be used after “bad” sunburn or any treatment
that causes extreme inflammation. The product should only be used after inflammation has subsided. For
use after chemical peel or laser treatment, one should consult one’s physician.
2. Can I use this when I'm pregnant?
Ingredients in TIME DEFIANCE® UV Defense SPF 50 Ultra Facial Sunscreen have been shown to be safe for
use by all women. Safety studies of cosmetics are not conducted on pregnant women. Whether to use or
not use this product or other consumer products like coffee, aspirin, etc., should be discussed by the patient

3. Can I use ARTISTRY® TIME DEFIANCE UV Defense SPF 50 Ultra Facial Sunscreen on my eyelids?

What does SPF 50 mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It indicates a level of protection against Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. The
number following SPF is a measurement of how much longer one can stay under the sun before getting a visible
sunburn when compared with the time to burn unprotected skin. SPF 50 means that the product will provide 50
times your natural protection from UVB rays. SPF gives no promise of protection from UVA rays.
What is the effect of ultraviolet rays on the skin?
The effect of ultraviolet rays on the skin differs among individuals even when the individuals are exposed to the
same dosage. When people with pale skin (having very little melanin) are exposed to ultraviolet rays, the skin
becomes sunburned and turns red. When people with dark skin (having high melanin content) are exposed to
ultraviolet rays, the skin gets darker. Prolonged exposure to UV rays results in freckles, dark spots, DNA
damage, aging, and even skin cancer.
How can I protect my skin from ultraviolet rays?
Always use a daytime moisturizer that has at least a broad-spectrum SPF 15 PA+++, even on rainy and
cloudy days.
Follow use instructions and apply the necessary amount of the daytime moisturizer to provide adequate sun
protection.
Use a makeup base containing a broad-spectrum SPF for added protection.
Reapply daytime moisturizer or SPF product every two hours if you have outdoor activities.
What does PA+++ mean?
PA is a Japanese designation for protection against Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation. Similar to SPF designation, the
number of + signs following PA indicates the extended sunlight-exposure time when compared to unprotected
skin. Currently, there are three levels of PA protection:
PA+ Minimal protection (an exposure time of 2–3.9 times longer than unprotected skin).
PA++ Adequate protection (an exposure time of 4–7.9 times longer than unprotected skin).
PA+++ Maximum protection (an exposure time of > 8 times longer than unprotected skin).
What is the difference between UVB and UVA rays?
UVA rays have a longer wavelength and possess relatively lower energy, but can penetrate deep in the skin.
The effects of UVA on the skin include immediate darkening, DNA damage, and photoaging.
UVB rays have a medium wavelength. UVB can cause acute skin inflammation (sunburn) by its action on the
epidermis, which results in persistent skin darkening, and roughness or peeling in severe cases.

The American Academy of Dermatology educates consumers that SPF 15 is enough protection for

provide adequate skin protection with higher UVB/UVA sunscreen to ward off the harmful affects of the sun.

was applied to the entire face, including the crow’s feet area. No major reactions were reported. It should
not be applied directly in the eye area, under the eye area, or on the eyelids. If the product gets into the
eye, it should be rinsed out immediately.

some skin sensation. What should I do?
Volunteers with all skin types were tested in safety and efficacy clinical trials. Tingling sensations, slight
stinging, or mild redness were not reported. But each person's tolerance for these sensations is different. If
redness develops or the sensations become more severe, the consumer should discontinue use.
