Vivek (406/48) Confessions of a single, desperate guy Never in my wildest dreams had I thought that my life will turn out to be this way. After working for two years, I cleared CAT and joined IIM-Calcutta, the college of my dreams. In my pursuit of Happiness, everything had turned out great and was going according to my plans. Having achieved the mission of admission in IIM-C, I wanted to break my image of a geek and get a girlfriend. So, I stopped studying and started concentrated on matters closer to the heart. The cases and readings started to pile up as if I was some government clerk who was in no mood to move them till I get my due share of bribe. Sometimes, I tried to complete almost all cases and went to the class prepared, but the class was not ready to listen to my pearls of wisdom. It appeared to me more like class desperation than class participation. It would have been an issue for me had this desperation come from pretty and sexy girls. But to my utter dismay, the sex ratio in class made me feel like the Chief Minister of a certain state whose sex ratio is so screwed up that the CM has to pay dowry to get a bride for his son. My college was strategically positioned in such a great location that there wasn’t any beautiful girl to be found in a radius of 10-15 kms. It appeared to me that the college authorities had chosen this location with the ulterior motive of ensuring that the girls inside 10 the campus get an undue share of the attention. I consoled myself thinking that I could go to malls and attract girls after wearing the IIM-C t-shirt. Let me remind you that this t-shirt was especially designed for desperate guys like me with the college name written in such a manner that a girl, no matter how myopic, can see the college name easily. But, my much proclaimed luck failed me here too. When we visited these malls, the girls would look at us as if we are some extra terrestrial creatures coming straight from the sets of Spielberg’s ‘ET returns’. A large part of the blame falls on us guys, with our eyes wide open and tongues wagging, nothing else could be expected from those Bong babes. Running fast out of options, I decided to shortlist all the hot girls within the campus and give it a try. Well, the list turned out to be really short, in fact so short that it would have given competition to Bipasha’s sexiest shorts. So, I made another shortlist, this time girls from the senior batches. This is where I finally realised what the much talked about ‘First Mover Advantage’ really meant. Most of the girls in my hotlist had already grabbed offers from Slot Zero guys. These guys were way ahead in terms of competition as they decided on their shortlists earlier and also offered PMO(Pre Marriage offers) after they had got the coveted PPO’s. So, I ruled out this category and moved further. Now the rest of the girls were either way out of my league or way out of my type. Just as I was about to give up, there occurred a divine light and sound show, which is generally seen in the types of serials like Mahabharata. This idea occurred to me, through one of my friends and it was of searching girls on Facebook. So I logged into the social networking site day in and day out with a green signal by the side of my name to show girls that I was available. I found a lot of my IIM-C classmates too on these sites and it was, then that I figured this to be a Joka-wide desperation. In pursuit of a girlfriend, my mid-terms and endterms took a beating. Even my summer placements got affected in such a manner that my dad started asking me ‘I don’t know what you will do next summer?’ But being an ardent fan of Lord Krishna; I haven’t let down my hopes. I still follow his theorem of love which states that we should continue to work without the want of fruits. I know one year has passed without much success but I believe I can still make a fresh start with the girls of the incoming new batch. In words of Robert Frost ‘I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep’.

I have got used to this, This sense of joy That one gets when one When one lives in a place like this... And when I move on To another place and another phase, In my heart I will carry The friends, the chirping and a slice of a place like this...
