him to say confidently and concisely what
the point of a master of divinity degree
is: ‘The M.Div. student must learn theology
and how to communicate it to the people
entrusted to his or her care.’
“It’s been forty years now since the M.Div.
— a three- or four-year program, usually
including groundings in biblical studies, theology,
church history, and a variety of practical
disciplines like preaching and counseling
— became the gold standard for pastorally
oriented theological education. There are
periodic calls for the overhaul of the seminaries,
and a number of experiments with other
ways to prepare people to work in congregations.
Even so, although a Rip Van Winkle
seminarian who fell asleep in the 1960s and
woke up today would have plenty to surprise
him — including the presence of large groups
of classmates who couldn’t be referred to as
‘him’ — the basic structure of his degree program
would be intact, and lots of his credits
transferable.”
Father Demetrius, Rev. Heppe wrote,
explained that although there are always new
things to address, “’the M.Div. is a degree in
hermeneutics, the science of interpretation.’
So, with the right tools, a seminary graduate
realizes that ‘the Word keeps answering
questions the author never thought of.’ “
The article noted that the Seminary’s
M.Div. is about to undergo a major change.
Required credit hours will increase to 100
from 75. Most students earn their degrees
after their third year, and complete a fourth
year of study before ordination. But the
Seminary’s advisory board urged the incorporation
of the fourth-year courses into the
degree program.
Father Kurt Belsole, O.S.B., Rector of the
Seminary, discussed some of the changes he
has seen since his student days in the 1970s.
The study body, from 15 dioceses and ten
countries, is double that from his era, with
78 in the M.Div. and 12 in the M.A. program.
Father Kurt noted the faculty is also more
diverse and larger, with some adjunct faculty
members coming from beyond the sponsoring
Benedictine community. And, Rev. Heppe
writes, “there have been changes, some
decided internally, some in response to the
required program of priestly formation, in
how, where, and when field work is done.
But it is the same M.Div., with the same core
values, the same essential structure, the same
basic content. Yes, it is.”
Rev. Heppe concludes the article by asking:
“What is a luxury and what is a necessity in
the training of ministers? It’s a tough question,
especially among Catholics as they face a
shortage of priests and a shortage of money
to pay lay professionals.
“Saint Vincent’s Dumm described the
nature of the M.Div. like this: ‘In my estimation,
it’s not a graduate degree in the usual
sense of research orientation. Its purpose is to
enable people to practice their profession.’ It’s
not the only way to do such preparation, and
interesting alternatives will continue to evolve.
But at least for the forseeable future, it’s the
M.Div. against which they will be judged.’ ”
Seminary Alumnus Was Father
To More Than Just Parishioners
When Rev. James E. Somma, Jr., C’55,
S’59, died on November 26, 2002, he was
“father” to more than just his parishioners. In
1970 he adopted two Vietnamese children.
Father Somma was remembered in an article
in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette by staff
writer Harry Tkach. Tkach interviewed one
of Father Somma’s classmates at Saint Vincent
Seminary, Rev. George A. Wilt, pastor
of St. Bernard Church in Mount Lebanon.
“If he saw a need, he responded to that
need,” Father Wilt said. “He saw an issue to
be resolved and did it.”
Father Wilt explained that when the priest
wanted to adopt his children, Peter and
Maria, the law at the time limited adoption
of immigrant children to married couples. So
the priest worked with legislators to change
the law.
Father Somma graduated from Saint
Vincent College and Seminary, then earned
a master’s degree in education at Michigan
State University. He and Father Wilt were
ordained May 30, 1959, in St. Paul’s Cathedral,
Oakland, the first class ordained by
then-Bishop John Wright, who later became
a cardinal.
He served in the Air Force, retiring in 1984
as a lieutenant colonel, garnering four military
decorations for action above and beyond the
call of duty. Following his retirement he served
parishes in Reserve, South Park, West Mifflin
and Pitcairn, in the Pittsburgh Diocese.
Father Somma died from complications
of Parkinson’s Disease. He is survived by his
sister, Dolores R. Somma of Scott, and his
children, Peter of Canonsburg and Maria
King of Pittsburgh, and four grandchildren.
“A Welcome Enthusiasm for the Faith.”
Photo of Father Gregory B. Wilson, S’00, receiving a rosary from Pope John Paul
II during his visit in November 2002.
With a year and a half of parish life behind
him, Father Gregory Wilson looks at a wonderful
life.
Ordained in June 2001, the parochial vicar
of Christ Our King in the Charleston Diocese
quickly learned one thing.
“There’s an awful lot seminary can’t teach
you simply because pastoral work is hands-on
experience and learning from others,” he said.
But there is no question about his attitude.
“It has been more wonderful than I ever
expected just being an instrument of God as
a priest,” he effused. “I knew it was going to
be great, but I didn’t realize it was going to be
this wonderful.”
In times when the media is saturated with
stories of clergy sex abuse, and the atmosphere
for the priesthood is rife with pain, this
new priest’s attitude can inspire the laity.
In a large parish like Christ Our King, Father
Wilson has already experienced the range of
roles he has played in his flock’s lives — from
birth to death.
“I just baptized the baby of a couple I married
last year,” he said.
His most difficult task, however, has not
been dealing with issues of life and death, but
the celebration of the Mass.
“You can be prepared for doing it, but you
can’t explain what it is like to someone who has
not done it,” he said.
So enthusiastic is he that this former Methodist
used to find it hard to believe he was a
priest.
“I have become more and more comfortable
with it,” he explained. “My two favorite
aspects are the celebration of Mass because
the Eucharist is central to my conversion and
confession. In confession people are coming
back to God and it is an incredible grace to
be an instrument of God to bring them back
to him.”
Wearing his clerics has not been a difficult
adjustment.
“It’s not just a uniform, it’s an outward sign
of the interior consecration,” he said. “It keeps
me mindful of that. They remind me just as
much as anybody who sees it.”
His greatest challenge as a priest so far?
Paperwork.
What is his advice for seminarians?
“Read and study everything,” he said. “I did
a lot but I could have done more. You need
every bit of it. I’ve had to explain everything
I have learned from the sacraments to the
Trinity.”
Father Wilson, who holds a degree in scripture,
has also spent his time teaching. He has
given lectures and participated in discussions
on the faith and the Gospel both at the church
and at the Pauline Books and Media store in
Charleston. He is getting ready to offer discussion
on apologetics.
“I will be going through the faith and
explaining where it comes from,” he said. “I
want to help people feel confident in their
faith. It was given by Jesus Christ. If you are
going to look for a biblical faith, it’s the Catholic
faith.”
The busy priest agreed to the interview with
The Miscellany between visits to patients at
area hospitals. When he burns the candle at
both ends, he prays.
“Nothing can replace prayer,” he said. “I
can always tell when I have not been praying
as fully as I should. There’s something about
being in dialogue with God, especially the
Divine Office that’s important.”
Another constant in his life is a devotion to
Mary, the mother of God.
It began in seventh grade, he said. “We
took a trip to Magnolia Gardens, and they
have a biblical garden. There was a statue of
Mary there, and I took a picture and kept it in
the front of my Bible. She was like my Catholic
mother.”
He still has that picture; it’s placed on the
first page of a scrapbook he keeps for religious
pilgrimages. It marks the path of many blessed
journeys to come.
First-year priest learns to take life one day at a time
By Marty Mitchell
Eastern Oklahoma Catholic
There’s an old joke that goes something like
this: If you want to make God laugh, just tell
Him your plans.
Perhaps no one understands this adage
better than Father Stuart Crevcoure, administrator
of Sacred Heart Church in Sapulpa.
The Green Bay, Wis., native is a self-confessed,
over-the-top planner, having tidily
laid out a career path at a young age. Not
only was his life path thoroughly planned and
paved, but all off ramps and side roads were
spoken for as well.
Nowhere in his plan, however, was mention
of a priest.
“I figured I could plan life’s journey by
myself. I never really thought to ask guidance
from God,” says Father Crevcoure, who
recently celebrated his first anniversary as a
priest.
You could say his road to priesthood began
as a junior at The University of Tulsa, when
he became highly involved in activities at the
Newman Center on campus.
The more involved he became at the
Center, the more he became convinced God
was calling him. By the time he graduated with
a degree in history in 1995, Father Crevcoure
knew his career path had taken a drastic
turn and he soon found himself headed to
seminary.
During his time at Saint Vincent Seminary in
Latrobe, Father Crevcoure says, seminarians
received a heads up that priests increasingly
were taking on more and more assignments
and responsibilities. His experiences during
and after seminary reinforced this warning.
“I’ve never had a conventional assignment,”
he said.
Serving as a deacon one summer, he split
time between two rural parishes, something
he says was never attempted before. Father
Crevcoure admits it was at times hectic, but the
experience helped him to truly begin understanding
the scope of the pastoral role and the
importance of interacting with parishioners.
“I really got to understand what it’s like to
form a bond with your parishioners.”
Upon graduating seminary, Father Crevcoure
returned to Tulsa to be ordained and
begin his role as assistant pastor at Church of
the Madalene.
“It was very much what seminary prepared
me for,” he recalls. “The people at Madalene
were wonderful.”
It also proved chockful of first-time and
life-lasting experiences. For instance, he
faced several funerals just a few weeks into
Rev. Stuart Crevcoure
his assignment.
“I know this may sound strange, but for me it
was a wonderfully graced moment,” he says.
“Looking back, it should have been difficult
for a priest to face. But, I realize whatever
good I’m accomplishing is really Christ working
in me.”
Father Crevcoure has learned plenty during
his first year as a priest, especially the differences
between expectations and actually
living the life of a priest. For him, the actual
experience has far exceeded any expectations
he had coming out of seminary.
Father Crevcoure says his first year also has
provided a few frustrating and challenging
moments — especially when his schedule gets
hectic. No matter how much seminary trains
you, he says, it cannot give you the experience
of being a pastor.
“A lot of it you learn on the job,” he says.
“But I see this as an opportunity for God’s
grace at work.”
Father Crevcoure admits he felt a great
deal of uncertainty going into his role at
Sacred Heart last spring. He was, after all, just
under 30 and less than a year removed from
seminary.
“But the people in the parish have been
wonderfully supportive,” he says.
Looking back at his first year, Father Crevcoure
says the one thing he would have done
differently would be to spend less time worrying
about getting everything accomplished
and focus more on trusting in God more when
it comes to his ministry.
“I’ve only learned that worry avails nothing.”
Asked how it feels coming into your profession
amidst a year when the Church, including
the Diocese of Tulsa, has been rocked by allegations
against other priests, Father Crevcoure
replies by saying priests of his generation seem
to be more resilient and better equipped to
deal with the many circumstances that are the
realities of today’s society.
“To be honest, we’ve never seen ourselves
on a pedestal,” he says. “We almost expect
people to give us a hard time. And I can tell
you we draw tremendous strength from the
people to whom we minister. I really think our
support system is strong.”
Even with negative events crowding headlines,
Father Crevcoure believes it’s having the
opposite impact than most people might think,
with more young men entering seminary than
in the past several years and more people
signing up for RCIA.
Reflecting on his first year, the many ups
and few downs, Father Crevcoure says there
is one piece of advice he carries with him at
all times:
“If you love the people to whom you minister,
don’t worry about anything else. It will
come out all right.”
Despite the many curves and detours Father
Father Demetrius
Dumm Interviewed In
U.S. Catholic Magazine
Rev. Demetrius R.
Dumm, O.S.B., Professor
of New Testament
at Saint Vincent
Seminary, was featured
in a five-page
article in the April
2003 issue of U.S.
Catholic. The article
noted that Father
Demetrius, who has
authored three books, is “a seasoned retreat
master and spiritual director. The down-toearth
Dumm draws out the spiritual challenges
and mystical power of John’s gospel for the
everyday reader.”
Talking about his third book, A Mystical
Portrait of Jesus: New Perspectives on John’s
And Then The Phone Rang . . .
Bill: Hello. Office of Saint Vincent
Archabbey and Seminary Development.
This is Bill Malloy.
Jane Doe: Hi, Mr. Malloy. This is
Jane Doe. I would like to speak with
someone about annuities.
Bill: You called the right person. How
can I help you?
Jane Doe: I was reading about the
different ways to give to charity. I know
that I want to give to Saint Vincent
Seminary, but I am not sure what I
should do.
Bill: First, please tell me a bit about
yourself.
Jane Doe: My husband graduated
from Saint Vincent College in 1951. I
graduated from Seton Hill in 1952. We
were married at Saint Vincent Basilica
in 1953 and have been parishioners
at Saint Vincent since that time. A
graduate of Saint Vincent Seminary
married us; a graduate of Saint Vincent
Seminary baptized our three children;
a graduate of Saint Vincent Seminary
married each of them; a graduate of
Saint Vincent Seminary baptized my
grandchildren; and, last year, a graduate
of Saint Vincent Seminary gave my
husband his last rites and presided over
his funeral. I am indebted to Saint Vincent
Seminary. But I don’t know what,
if anything, I can do to support the mission
of the Seminary.
Bill: Let me begin by thanking you for
your thoughtfulness and kind remarks
Gospel, Father Demetrius stated that the more
he taught John’s Gospel in the seminary the
more he realized it is different from the synoptic
gospels.
“The Gospel of John is powerfully symbolic
and mystical,” he said. “You need to get
beyond those historical questions to appreciate
the symbolism. ... The symbolic takes
human words, human persons, and human
events and gives them wings so they can dare
to talk about the divine -- which, of course, is
beyond human words.”
He said that “Jesus showed his power by
dying for others, but we weren’t saved just
because he died. We weren’t even saved
because he suffered. We were saved because
he loved, and that involves suffering and
sometimes death. When we love, we die a
little bit, long before we die.”
Father Demetrius talks about the uniqueness
of John’s Gospel in the Passion and Resurrection
stories, noting that the author takes the
Eucharist out of the Last Supper and replaces
about the Seminary. I, too, have been
blessed to have priests educated at Saint
Vincent Seminary involved in the important
events of my life. However, the focus
of your decision must be your own financial
security. Can you tell me a bit about
your financial picture?
Jane Doe: My husband and I worked
very hard, and, while far from wealthy, I
have a monthly pension, a few stocks,
and some money in bank CDs. I could
give a gift today, but I am concerned that
I may need the monthly income in the
future. I am relatively healthy now, but
you never know what the future may hold.
And I have no idea how much nursing
care may cost.
Bill: Let me share with you a couple of
thoughts. First of all, if there is any chance
that you may need the money, then you
must keep it. Period. Secondly, if you
feel that you won’t need the money, but
that you may need the income you derive
from it, then I would ask that you consider
a charitable gift annuity.
Jane Doe: I have heard the term but, to
be honest, I don’t really understand how
they work.
Bill: In that case, I want to do two
things. First of all, I will explain to you how
they work. Then, if you will share with me
your age and the amount of money you
are considering, I will send you a worksheet
that will explain the details of annuities
and that will provide you with specific
information regarding your rate of return,
it with foot-washing. “Why? Because the
major problem with ritual religion is focused
on the Eucharist, the ritual of all rituals. My
interpretation is that the author of this gospel
needed room to explain this adequately and
so moved it elsewhere to give it more attention.
In some ways the foot-washing is almost
more powerful than what Jesus does with the
bread and wine, because foot-washing comes
right out and explicitly states that what counts
is serving others.”
Father Demetrius pointed out that “plenty
of people are mystical and don’t know it. ... But
every single person has the possibility of entering
into this wonderful union with God and
Jesus Christ through the power of the Spirit.
Evil and good are all around us. We have to
learn to let the evil go and gather in the good,
to say ‘thank you, Lord’ every time something
good happens. That ‘thank you’ enables us to
digest that goodness, make it part of ourselves.
So the best witness, the best advertisement of
mysticism is to be a joyful person. Mysticism is
just the appreciation of the presence of God.”
your charitable deduction, and the payment
stream that you will receive each
year for the rest of your life. How does
that sound?
Jane Doe: Let’s get started.
The dialogue above was taken from
an actual conversation between the
Director of Development, Bill Malloy,
and a friend of Saint Vincent who was
inquiring about an annuity. While her
name and certain details were changed
to protect the privacy of the donor, the
underlying case remains accurate.
So how did it turn out? “Jane Doe,”
after reviewing the worksheet and
meeting with her financial advisor,
chose to open a charitable gift annuity
with stock that was paying a very small
dividend. Not only did she receive a rate
of return that is much higher than the
dividend she was receiving, but she also
received a large charitable deduction and
only had to pay a portion of the capital
gains tax. And she was able to provide
much needed support to Saint Vincent
Seminary, consistent with her original
intent. This truly was a Win-Win!
for you, please contact Bill Malloy at
A Message from the Chairman
“Forward, Always Forward, Everywhere Forward”
— Saint Vincent Seminary founder, Abbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B.
It is my great pleasure to report on the progress and activities of Saint Vincent Seminary.
Once again, we can point to a number of significant accomplishments.
We are tremendously proud of our first-rate curriculum, which provides our seminarians
with a world-class, Total Quality educational experience. It is this curriculum, together with our
renowned faculty, that allows us to maintain our high enrollment levels during this very challenging
time in the Church. This past May 10th at our 156th commencement, we awarded 16
Master of Divinity degrees and 11 Master of Arts degrees. This year, 17 alumni of Saint Vincent
Seminary were ordained to the priesthood and are now serving with the following dioceses
and religious communities: Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Altoona-Johnstown,
Greensburg, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Youngstown, Ohio; and Wheeling-Charleston,
West Virginia; St. Bede Abbey, Peru, Illinois; and Saint Leo Abbey, Saint Leo,
Florida. In addition, our diverse student body now represents 14 countries throughout the
world.
In the 2002 Annual Report, I announced the initiation of a Pastoral Stewardship Program
at Saint Vincent Seminary. After much discussion with our constituent bishops regarding the
preparation of seminarians for their duties in the parish, we recognized the need for increased
training in the leadership and management skills necessary to function as a pastor, who is essentially
the CEO of a parish. With the input of these bishops, we established a four-year course
that will provide our graduates with the skills to successfully manage the human, physical and
Dr. John C. Marous, Jr.
financial resources entrusted to their care. I am now proud to announce that the inaugural conference
will be held on November 4, 2003. We are honored that Bishop Bernard W. Schmitt from
the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, Fr. Robert Sirico from the Acton Institute, and Fr. John Haney of the Diocese of Pittsburgh will be
our featured speakers. Many influential religious and business leaders have volunteered their expertise toward this very important mission
and, after receiving the feedback of the Bishops and Priests in ministry, I am extremely excited about the program.
Another program about which I am extremely excited is our Homiletics program. Homiletics, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary,
means “The art of preaching; that branch of theology dealing with homilies or sermons, and the best method of preparing and delivering
them.” Clearly, one of the greatest needs in the Church today is effective preaching of the Word of God. As a part of our current capital
campaign, Expanding the Vision, we have committed to establish a Chair in Homiletics that will allow Saint Vincent Seminary to attract
and retain the highest quality preachers and teachers of the Word of God who will impart on our seminarians the benefit of their education
and experience. Further, we will make this expertise available, via summer refresher courses, to existing priests.
We have made marked progress in our capital campaign, raising $4.9 million, or 80%, of our $6.15 million goal. Over the past year,
we have received generous financial commitments from our Board, from our constituent bishops, from several leadership donors, and
from a few of our alumni and friends toward our efforts. We are truly grateful for their commitment to the priesthood as witnessed by
their willingness to help us prepare these courageous and holy young men. In last year’s annual report, I announced the idea of a Pastoral
Stewardship program – and today it is a reality. We have met, and surpassed, our goal for increased scholarship funding. It is my great
hope that, in next year’s report, I can announce that the Homiletics program has been fully funded and that we have this very important
program in place.
As we achieved these exceptional results, it is important to point out that the seminary remains a model of efficiency and fiscal management.
This year, the seminary administration has again prudently managed its resources while coming in under the financial budgets
that have been established, thereby helping to protect the precious financial assets that our generous supporters have donated.
On behalf of the Board of Regents, I thank all who, through their prayers and support, make these achievements possible.
A Message from the Chancellor
A True and Blessed Satisfaction
Our founder Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., once wrote: “And yet
there is always a true and blessed satisfaction in doing this work; no effort goes
to waste; every hardship is rewarded; every seed brings forth some fruit; every
brick adds to the structure; on every side there is development where before
there was nothing, and where there never would have been anything had not
someone weighed the possibilities and put forth the effort.”
In spite of the difficult times our world faces today, those words still
endure. There is a “true and blessed satisfaction” in our efforts at Saint Vincent
Seminary to provide a total quality education for our seminarians. The roots of
their priestly formation at Saint Vincent Seminary will grow and be nurtured
here, and the fruits of that formation will ripen in many different forms and in
many different cities and communities throughout the world. Our seminarians
come from seventeen different dioceses and archdioceses, and fourteen different
abbeys and religious communities. They also represent fourteen different
nations. Saint Vincent Seminary has indeed become reflective of the universality
of the Church.
This annual report recognizes those who have contributed to building our
future, and the future of the Church. You have helped provide us with the
resources with which we can “weigh the possibilities” and carry out the mission
of Christ and the vision of Boniface Wimmer as we plan for the future.
Our Expanding the Vision Capital Campaign is achieving the success
which will enable us to continue the efforts to help our seminarians become
more effective witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many challenges remain
in our world today: poverty, starvation, war, religious and ethnic bigotry, and
many other problems which cause division and conflict. Our efforts to resolve
these challenges will demand that we all focus clearly on the words and deeds of Jesus Christ.
Archabbot Douglas
R. Nowicki, O.S.B.
We continue to pray for peace among the nations of the world amidst the tension and conflict in the Middle East. We
also remember in a special way all of those serving in our military, and pray for them to bring peace and stability to an
area of the world that has lived in conflict for many years.
May the peace of Christ be with you.
Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B.
Mission Statement
Saint Vincent Seminary is a Roman Catholic Seminary grounded in the Gospel
of Jesus Christ and the living tradition of the Church in accord with the Magisterium,
and shaped by the Benedictine heritage of liturgical prayer, study, hospitality
and community. As such, the Seminary is a center for the spiritual formation,
human development, and academic and pastoral preparation of candidates for the
priesthood. Consistent with this primary mission and responsive to the contemporary
needs of the Church, the Seminary provides programs for permanent diaconate
candidates and offers its degree programs to qualified men and women seeking
a theological education.
A Message from the Rector
Generous and Total Sacrifice
As I write this, it is Palm Sunday. Yesterday, Bishop J. Kevin Boland of Savannah,
Georgia, ordained nine of our seminarians to the diaconate. Thirteen others, God
willing, will be ordained to the priesthood this summer.
The liturgy in these last weeks of Lent and during the Easter Triduum focuses on
Christ’s generous and total gift of himself for our salvation. Last Sunday’s gospel
spoke of the “hour” of Jesus’ sacrifice. He himself proclaimed that His “hour” had
come, the “hour” for the grain of wheat to fall to the ground and die so that it might
bear much fruit. The Lord’s sacrifice for our salvation is characterized and driven
by His infinite divine love that pours itself out totally — holding nothing back
— giving His life for the salvation of the world.
All of our seminarians in their formation for priesthood are called to imitate Christ
and conform themselves closely to Him. As I reflect during these days on the
Lord’s dying and rising and His total gift of Himself in suffering and self-sacrificial
Very Rev. Kurt Belsole, O.S.B. love, I find that gift and that love mirrored in the lives of the men who are preparing
for priesthood here at Saint Vincent. In a very real sense, like Jesus, their “hour”
too has come. The Lord, recognizing His “hour,” gave His life generously and totally in sacrifice. These men whom you
support so generously with your prayers and sacrifices are preparing to give themselves totally in unselfish love to Christ
and His Church. In fact, making a total gift of self is the only way that one can enter into priesthood. As I remind our
seminarians in homilies and formation conferences, “You need, in prayer, to offer God your entire self. Hold nothing
back — give Him everything. Be aware though that God takes that prayer seriously. He will take everything. In priesthood,
there really is no other way — and it is good that way.”
For our new deacons and our new priests, their “hour” has come. It is a time of tremendous grace for them and the
Church. Like Jesus and the grain of wheat, they “fall to the ground and die” so that they can “bear much fruit.” The
abundant graces that will flow from their years of priestly service to the People of God are made possible because of your
support of them during their years of formation. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. May God bless and reward
you.
The Very Reverend Kurt Belsole, O.S.B.
We Still Need Your Help
Through the generosity of our Board of Regents, constituent bishops, leadership gifts,
and with just a few gifts from alumni and friends, we have reached $4.9 million of our
$6.15 million goal. We could not be more grateful to these faithful donors. But your help
is still needed to implement all of the important program enhancements required for
Saint Vincent Seminary to continue to provide the highest quality formation program
for our seminarians. While the Pastoral Stewardship Program is now up and running,
two other critical components need additional funding:
Endowed Chair in Homiletics — One of the greatest needs in the Church today is
effective preaching of the Word of God. To meet this need, Saint Vincent Seminary is
committed to establishing a Chair in Homiletics. Every year, we will retain a speaker of
the highest quality, to provide our seminarians with the tools and experience to actively
engage their congregations.
Hispanic Ministries Program — Hispanics account for 36% of the Catholics in the
United States. By 2020, the number will rise to 50%. While Saint Vincent Seminary
currently has several Hispanic Ministries courses and offers Spanish mass twice each
month, a more thorough curriculum — complete with an immersion experience in the
culture and language — is necessary to meet this important need of the Church.
To ensure that priests trained at Saint Vincent are fully prepared to serve the people
of God, we need participation from all of our alumni and friends. Please contact Bill
Malloy at (724)532-6740 to find out how you can assist in the formation of future
priests....a role that Pope John Paul II calls “one of the most demanding and important
tasks for the future of the evangelization of humanity.”

Father Mauricio W. West, S’79, diocesan
administrator in the Diocese of Charlotte,
received papal distinction as reverend
monsignor from Pope John Paul II.
The title Prelate of Honor was bestowed
upon Msgr. West, which is conferred on
outstanding members of the clergy for the
duration of their lifetimes. He was elected by
the college of consultors to serve as diocesan
administrator upon Bishop Curlin’s retirement
in September. Ordained in June 1979, he
served as vice president for student affairs
at Belmont Abbey College, then parochial
vicar and business manager at St. Gabriel.
He served as chancellor and vicar general of
the Diocese of Charlotte since 1994.
Two Saint Vincent Seminary graduates
have been named co-directors of the Pittsburgh
diocesan Vocations Office.
Fathers Thomas A. Sparacino,
S’97, and Thomas Burke, S’97, were
appointed by Bishop Donald Wuerl to serve
as co-directors of the office, serving under
Father James Wehner, who directs the office
as part of his assignment as director of the
Department for Pre-Ordination Formation.
Father Burke is also parochial vicar at St.
Alphonsus in Wexford, while Father Sparacino
is parochial vicar at St. Valentine in
Bethel Park. Father Burke will work with high
school students, while Father Sparacino will
work with post-high school men and the affiliate
program.
Father Sparacino told Pittsburgh Catholic
staff writer John Franko that he and
Father Burke will “draw on their own continuing
discernment and be witnesses to how they
live out the call in their own lives. He said it is
important to be honest with men they meet,
especially when it comes to discussing issues
such as the recent scandal involving a number
of priests. He said it is important to point out
that the vast majority of priests still live out
their call in a faithful manner.”
Father Burke noted that the “goal of a
good vocation program is to find quality,
not quantity. He said the diocese must be
led into the future by ‘healthy, well-rounded
priests.’”
Father Sparacino said that his own vocations
story and that of Father Burke are
important witness to the road to the priesthood,
and added that prayer is a key into
finding answers. “Be open and trust in God,”
he said.
Father Burke was featured in the Trib
North following his appointment. The article
by Joan Green noted that he channeled his
dream of becoming a broadcast journalist
Charloe Alumni
received a bachelor’s degree in communications
in 1992 from Clarion University. While
at Clarion he was a disc jockey and news
director for the university’s radio station.
Upon graduation he began working in public
relations before the priesthood called.
Stephen A. Kresak, a second-year
theology student at the Seminary, was also
quoted in the article. He noted that Father
Burke “helped me a lot when I struggled with
going from life as a layperson to being in the
seminary. He’s very inspirational. He’s helped
me keep my vocation in perspective and has
had a positive influence in my life.”
Pisburgh Priest
Publishes Memoirs
Msgr. Paul M. Lackner, C’38,
S’42, a Pittsburgh diocesan priest,
has published “Memoirs of a Diocesan
Priest,” with an introduction by Bishop
Donald W. Wuerl.
In his 59-year ministry, Msgr. Lackner
has had 10 different parish assignments
and numerous diocesan leadership positions.
Ordained in 1942, he worked with
six different bishops and received the
title of monsignor in 1964. He obtained
a doctorate degree in 1995. His brother
Francis also became a priest.
He was director of the Holy Name
Society from 1946 to 1969 and director
of the Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the
Blind from 1946 to the present, among
many other activities. The 119-page
book gives his family background, tells
about each of the ten parishes where he
served, gives a history of Pittsburgh and
the birth of Catholicism in the region.
The book is available for $22.50 from
J. Pohl Associates, Pittsburgh, 412-279-
5000.
per, featured a photo of Father Adrian on
the front page, following his installation as
pastor by Archbishop Donoghue. A feature
article by Gretchen Keiser gave the history
of the archdiocese’s newest parish, which
was dedicated on January 4. The article
noted that while the mission parish has been in
existence for over 20 years, rapid growth in
the area had reached the level of over 500
registered families, so Father Pleus, who had
been parish administrator, petitioned for the
mission to become a parish.
The parish namesake, St. Vincent de Paul,
whose life was distinguished by service to the
poor, was mentioned by the archbishop and
Father Pleus as an inspiration for the people.
Father David A. Perry, Sʼ00, parochial
vicar at St. Peter Cathedral, Erie, was featured
in the January 31 edition of the Lake
Shore Visitor in conjunction with the World
Day for Consecrated Life. He noted that “I
recognized God’s call in my life at a rather
young age. I was never fully conscious of the
call until my college years. It was at Mercyhurst
College that I began to really examine
and explore questions of faith and what
God meant for me. Being actively involved
with campus ministry helped me see the ‘big
picture’: that God gives all of us talents and
blessings that we can use to help our neighbor
in loving service.”
“Befriending seminarians a cause close to
God’s heart,” was the headline of a column
written by William Burke in the Pittsburgh
Catholic recently. William Burke, the father
of Father Thomas J. Burke, a Pittsburgh
diocesan priest, told how a family from Chicago
began corresponding with his son while
he was a student at the Seminary. The family
“read one of his columns in the Pittsburgh
Catholic and wrote to him. They began to
correspond and sent him pens, socks and
various gift packages. They must have been
angels from God, because the letters and
packages would come at a time when needed
most. He never found out who they were. To
this day they remain a mystery.”
William Burke noted that he recently
attended an acolyte installation of two
Pittsburgh seminarians and was “impressed
to see two buses in front of the basilica with
supporters for our seminarians. They came
from their home parishes, as well as parishes
where seminarians have interned to learn
about daily parish life and ministry.”
He advocated “adopting a seminarian.
We can walk that journey with them
toward priesthood. We can do this with an
occasional card or note, remembering him
during the holidays and staying in contact
as he travels the road to the priesthood. This
is a wonderful time to watch the man God
has chosen to follow in the footsteps of the
apostles. But one thing along this road that is
needed is support. It comes in various forms:
prayers, letters, financial and moral. We
may not know a young man who is a seminarian
at this time, but in this way, we will come
to know him.”
Charitable Gift Annuities:
Has There Ever Been A Better Time?
With interest rates at their
lowest levels since Dwight Eisenhower
was in the White House,
has the income that you are earning
on your savings account and
certificates of deposits dwindled
down to nothing? If so, you are
not alone. The current rate on a
savings account is only about 1%.
And CDs are not earning much
more.
Now is the perfect time to consider
a Charitable Gift Annuity.
What is it? Glad you asked. A
charitable gift annuity is a simple
contract between you and Saint
Vincent Seminary. In exchange for your irrevocable
gift of cash or securities, Saint Vincent
Seminary agrees to pay you a fixed sum of
money, each year for life. Married? No problem.
We will pay a fixed sum of money each year as
long as either of you is alive. And the good news
is your interest rate. While the rate depends
upon the age of the individual(s) receiving the
income, it is not uncommon to earn 7 or 8%,
sometimes even more. And that is not all. The
benefits of a charitable gift annuity include:
1. You will receive a high-rate, fixed annual
income for life.
2. You will qualify for a federal income tax
deduction.
3. If you fund the annuity with an appreciated
asset such as stock, you will incur tax on
only part of the gain. Better yet, this tax will be
spread out over many years.
4. Your estate may enjoy reduced probate
costs and estate taxes.
5. Last, but not least... Because the
remainder will belong to Saint Vincent Seminary,
you will be providing generous and very
The ordination of John A. Rice to
the priesthood was featured on the
cover of The Catholic Spirit,
newspaper for the Wheeling-Charleston
Diocese.
Father Rice became the
383rd priest ordained for
the 152-year-old diocese
on January 5. Over 500
persons attended the ceremony,
with Bishop Bernard
W. Schmitt presiding.
“It is, of course, with great joy
that I ordained John a priest today,
but it is also with some sadness. It
seems that John will be the last man I ordain to the priesthood,”
Bishop Schmitt said. Bishop Schmitt is required by canon law to
tender his resignation to the Holy See on his 75th birthday, which
is in August of 2003.
Father Rice, 40, is the son of Donald and Carol Rice of Virginia.
His ordination was moved from June to January so that his
terminally-ill mother could be present. Following his ordination he
returned to the Seminary to complete his formation program, and
will receive his first pastoral assignment in June.
“Now my family will gather for a happy occasion,” Father Rice
said. “A great value of the church is family, and moving the ordination
for my family is a way of showing that family is important to
the Church.”
He has a master of arts degree in theology from Saint Vincent
Seminary and graduated from Wheeling Jesuit University in 1984
with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He will receive the master
of divinity degree from the Seminary in May of 2003. Prior to
entering the seminary he worked as an executive for the Boy Scouts
of America in Wisconsin and Illinois.
His summer assignments have included serving at Saint James
Parish, Charles Town, in 1999; Sacred Heart Parish, Bluefield, in
2000; Saint Francis de Sales Parish, Beckley, in 2001 and at Saint
Michael Parish, Wheeling, 2002.
September 14, 2002 was to be a day
of joy for Father Anthony G.
Sargent, O.S.B., because it
was the day of his ordination
to the priesthood. It was also
a day of sadness, as two
hours before the ordination,
his mother Eleanor called
with news of his father
Anthony’s death after a
long illness.
“It wasn’t a shock. It was
expected, but I was at a stand-
News of the Recently-Ordained
still,” he told Michael Wojcik of The Beacon, newspaper of the
Paterson, New Jersey diocese. “It was more stressful, but I knew I
had to do it,” he said of the ordination.
“The people there were a tremendous consolation,” he added,
including his mother. He was a celebrant at his father’s funeral three
days later.
Prior to becoming a Benedictine of St. Mary’s Abbey in Morristown,
New Jersey, Father Anthony was a catechist for many years
at his home parish of St. Christopher’s, Parsippany. He attended
Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, but began work before graduation
as a lab technician at St. Clare’s Medical Center, Denville,
N.J. He resumed his collegiate studies and was awarded a B.A.
from Thomas Edison State College, Trenton, N.J., in 1996. He has
both the master of arts and master of divinity degrees from Saint
Vincent Seminary.
Although his parents were practicing Catholics, it was his grandmother,
Maria Nicolina, now 101, who took him to daily Mass.
He made first profession of monastic vows on March 21, 1997.
He then pursued philosophy at the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent
Station, N.J., before beginning his studies at Saint Vincent
Seminary. Four days after professing solemn vows on December
7, 2001, he was ordained deacon by Bishop Rodimer at the Our
Lady Seat of Wisdom Oratory at the Paterson Diocesan Center,
Clifton. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Roger Gries,
O.S.B., of Cleveland at the St. Mary’s Chapel in Morristown. His
assignments following ordination include serving as school chaplain
at Delbarton School, which is affiliated with his abbey, and at St.
Brigid’s, Peapack; St. Elizabeth’s, Far Hills; and St. Ann’s, West
Paterson, a Melkite rite parish. He has also taught freshman and
juniors religion and served as associate director of campus ministry
at Delbarton School.
Will The Next
Generation
Belong
To Christ?
In 1846 Saint Vincent
founder Boniface Wimmer
asked, “To whom will the next generation belong?” Since that time
Saint Vincent Seminary has been working to ensure that the next
generation belongs to Jesus Christ.
For over 150 years, the formation of future priests has been our mission
at Saint Vincent Seminary. In that time we have been blessed
to prepare over 2,400 men as priests to serve the people of God.
As our seminarians exhibit the courage and faith to accept the
call to priesthood, we must educate and prepare them. As Our
Holy Father tells us, the formation of future priests is “one of the most
demanding and important tasks for the future of the evangelization
of humanity.”
Please consider a gift to help support the priestly formation program
at Saint Vincent Seminary. You can ensure the continued availability
of financial aid for Seminary students in need.
Yes, Fr. Kurt, I support Saint Vincent
Seminary’s mission and the formation
of future priests.
