ATHLETICS
FALL SPORTS
the season against Groton. Just as had
happened in the previous game, the Arrows
jumped out to a lead early on. A highlight
reel catch by Tyler Sweeney ’12 in the end
zone gave the Arrows a 7-0 lead, and
shortly thereafter Brendan Daly scored on a
five yard run to give the Arrows a 14-0 edge
at the end of the first quarter. Groton
scored once in the second quarter and kept
the Arrows out of the end zone in that
frame to keep the game close at halftime,
14-7. In the locker room the Arrows were
determined not to let this game slip away
from them in the second half, and their
performance in the third quarter put the
game out of reach. Brendan Daly rushed
for another touchdown, and Sam Hodgson
’12 contributed the next two touchdowns,
one from each side of the ball. First, from
the fullback position, Hodgson took an
inside hand off and found room up the
right sideline on his way to a 22 yard
touchdown run. On the ensuing drive for
Groton, from his outside linebacker
position, Hodgson dropped into coverage
in the flat where he picked off a pass and
then ran the interception back for a 40 yard
touchdown. The close game at halftime
turned into a 35-7 lead for the Arrows in a
matter of a few minutes. While Groton
continued to play hard in the fourth
quarter, mounting somewhat of a
comeback, the Arrows’ defense, led by
junior cornerback Sam Washburne’s three
interceptions, preserved the 35-21 win.
Heading into the final game of the
season against Thayer, the Arrows had a
chance to finish with a .500 record, a major
accomplishment given the 1-4 start to the
season. While the game started well for the
Arrows with a 21 yard touchdown run for
Pat Healy followed by a 73 yard touchdown
run by Brian Strachan, these first quarter
scores proved to be the only ones for the
Arrows on the day. Thayer came back to
take a 14-13 lead at halftime and then
added two more second half scores on their
way to a 27-13 win. While disappointed
over the loss, the Arrows knew that they
gave their best effort in trying to send the
senior class off with a win. Although the
senior class did not earn the win in the final
game of their careers, they should be proud
of their contributions to the team over the
years. Brian Strachan, a three year starter
for the Arrows, finished off an outstanding
career during which he threw 21
touchdown passes, rushed for 12
touchdowns, tallied one receiving
touchdown, and had one interception
return for a score as well. Fellow senior
defensive starters Connor Wiik, Charles
Conigliaro, John Fiore, and Corey Peters all
had strong seasons for the Arrows and
modeled dedication and indomitable spirit
to the younger players on the field. In
addition, the rest of the senior class, James
Connolly, Dillon Ecclesine, David Leith,
Jordan Perry, Chris Sullivan, Dan
Aisenberg, and Wes Cosby helped to keep
the team focused and offered valuable
contributions to the team throughout the
season and throughout their careers on the
team. The coaching staff appreciates all
they did for the program.
While the Arrows finished with a
disappointing 3-5 record, the seniors led
well and many young players stepped up
and played beyond their years. At various
points in the season, nine sophomores
either started games or saw significant
varsity minutes. In addition, freshman
Conor Strachan started all but two games
for the Arrows at middle linebacker. These
underclassmen, along with a strong rising
senior class led by captain elects Jack
Connolly, Austin Franchi, and Sam
Hodgson, have the Arrows excited for next
season. Although the first game of the 2011
season is still nine months away, preparation
for next year has begun already. n
