<strong>Background</strong> on <strong>NATEP</strong>
<strong>NATEP</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong>
1. <strong>NATEP</strong> (National Aerospace <strong>Technology</strong> Exploitation Programme) is a national
programme to inject new technology and new technology management capabilities into
the UK aerospace supply chain. <strong>NATEP</strong> will provide both money and mentoring, funding
and supporting with expertise 100 new technology projects in the supply chain. It is an
Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP) programme managed by ADS and delivered with
the support of the regional aerospace alliances such as the Midlands Aerospace
Alliance (MAA) as part of the UK national aerospace industrial strategy. In terms of
public funds, it is funded until March 2017 from the BIS Advanced Manufacturing Supply
Chain Initiative (AMSCI) managed by Birmingham City Council and Finance
Birmingham.
Role of <strong>NATEP</strong> Midlands <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong>
2. The <strong>NATEP</strong> Midlands <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong> will lead the delivery for the Midlands
Aerospace Alliance (MAA) of <strong>NATEP</strong> within the Midlands region.
3. The <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong> will project-manage <strong>NATEP</strong> in the Midlands with the
assistance of a <strong>NATEP</strong> Midlands Industry Liaison <strong>Manager</strong> and other MAA resources
and capabilities, working closely with the national <strong>NATEP</strong> team under the direction of the
<strong>NATEP</strong> Programme Director and Deputy Programme Director.
4. A set of programme documents will be made available to aid the <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong>
once appointed, including the <strong>NATEP</strong> contract between ADS and MAA, the <strong>NATEP</strong> offer
letters from Birmingham City Council and associated documents including a <strong>NATEP</strong>
<strong>Regional</strong> Manual.
Specific tasks
5. Within this role, a number of tasks will be undertaken:
a. The principal task will be to support the formation of supply chain consortia
based in the Midlands to undertake technology development projects. This will
include organising outreach events, assisting smaller companies with proposal
writing, ensuring appropriate selection and documentation of projects as an
accountable body, monitoring and supporting the progress of funded projects
and helping companies disseminate results including to prospective customers.
A budget is available to support this work.
b. Operating within the MAA organisational framework, the <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong>
will also manage a <strong>NATEP</strong> Midlands <strong>Regional</strong> Advisory Panel (RAP). The RAP
will be chaired by the MAA chief executive officer and be composed of
independent industry experts, which will meet quarterly to help identify and
develop projects based in the Midlands. It is the RAP that will propose projects

for funding to the <strong>NATEP</strong> National Steering Board (NSB). The <strong>Technology</strong>
<strong>Manager</strong> will assist the RAP to report to the NSB, using key performance
indicator (KPI) and dashboard reporting tools in a common form with other
regions to allow the NSB to have an overview of the whole national programme.
c. The <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong> will liaise with <strong>NATEP</strong> peers elsewhere in the UK to
identify opportunities for cooperation in <strong>NATEP</strong> with businesses from other
regions. In addition, the <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong> will need to build and maintain an
awareness of additional funding opportunities for <strong>NATEP</strong> companies and
aerospace supply chain companies more generally.
d. In order to deliver <strong>NATEP</strong> effectively, as and when required the <strong>Technology</strong>
<strong>Manager</strong> will represent the Midlands and its supply chain companies at a
national level on aerospace technology matters, liaising as appropriate with ADS,
the Aerospace & Defence Knowledge Transfer Network, BIS and TSB.
6. In fulfilling the role, the <strong>Technology</strong> <strong>Manager</strong> will thus act as Midlands Aerospace
Alliance’s point of contact for new technology and innovation within the region’s
aerospace sector, through <strong>NATEP</strong>. This will include utilising the MAA’s network of
member companies, committees and contacts databases to liaise with all businesses
serving the industry, as well as with universities and research and technology
organisations (RTOs), with the object of advancing the combined technological
capability of the region’s aerospace industry. Assisting supply chain companies including
SMEs to make full use of regional resources such as the facilities of local universities will
be important, and <strong>NATEP</strong> can be a vehicle for enhancing this as well as enhancing the
technology management capabilities of supply chain companies for the future..
Person specification
1. Has experience at senior engineering or technical level in the aerospace industry,
preferably at both prime/first-tier level and at smaller supply chain companies.
2. Has developed and managed funded research and technology projects including
liaison with public funding bodies
3. Has experience in liaising between industry on the one hand and universities and
research and technology organisations on the other hand
4. Brings strong project management experience
5. Is a self-starter able to manage “programme within a programme”
6. Is able to present at technical meeting events with 60-200 delegates
7. Is able to work on demand as required by the task
Terms and conditions
The successful candidate will be employed by the Midlands Aerospace Alliance, on terms
and conditions to be mutually agreed, on a fixed term contract until March 31 st 2017.
