4. You must affix a label or write
directly onto the back of the
picture giving:
a) your full name
b) the age (in years) you will be
on Thursday March 28th 2013
c) the age category entered
(A,B,C or D)
d) the name of your school.
(Entries without all these details
will be disqualified.)
5. Award-winning entries
will be retained by Richmond
Borough in Bloom and may
be put on public display or
reproduced. Entry into the
competition implies agreement
with this condition. The committee
does not undertake to return any
entries, whether award-winning
or not.

OPEN NOW to all pupils in schools in the
Borough of Richmond upon Thames. 2013
This year, in May, will see the launch of the Richmond Gardens Festival, celebrating
historic gardens past, present and future. In the same month we will launch this
year’s gardening competitions for all our residents, community groups and businesses.
To publicise our competitions we are looking for a colourful, eye-catching flower
painting to be the centrepiece of a special poster.
YOUR PAINTING COULD BE A WINNER!
We are looking for one that is very special. We are looking for a
painting of one or more wild flowers!
For centuries, meadows in historic properties
and open spaces of our borough have
blossomed with many different varieties,
both in colour and shape, of beautiful wild
flowers. In summertime they attract bees
and butterflies – and this is something we
want to encourage more and more today.
Already, many open spaces in our borough
have been allowed to bloom naturally. Every
residential garden, community area and school
could create a patch for wild flowers – and,
with your painting, you can help to grow the
interest in doing just that.
WIN A WILDFLOWER GARDEN
FOR YOUR SCHOOL
(and a fabulous art pack for yourself!)
The painting judged the best in four age
groups will each win for their school a
wild flower plug collection from the Royal
Horticultural Society worth approx. £100.
The collection will consist of at least six different
varieties of perennial, biennial and annual wild
flower plug plants which are attractive to bees
and other nectar-seeking insects.

PAINTING COULD BE
A WINNER!
This year we want our poster to
feature wild flowers.
Your painting could be of a single
bloom, or a collection, or even a
wildlife garden scene. There are
many common varieties, with vibrant
colour and bold or delicate shapes.
Think of bluebells, buttercups, daisies,
primroses, poppies and bullrushes.
But there are hundreds more which
you can find by searching the web
(www.rhs.org.uk is a good place to
start) or books in your local library.

The qualities we will be
looking for in the winning
design are:
H a distinctive shape of
bloom(s) or plant(s)
H eye-catching colour and
composition
H real artistic merit
There are 12 prizes to
be won!
The entries will be judged in four
age groups – see separate box
opposite.
The entry judged the best in each
group will win
H a wildflower garden for their
school – worth approx £100
H a pack of art materials for the
artist – worth approx £70

PLUS
two runner-up entries in each
group will win
H a pack of art materials for the
artist – worth approx £50
The overall winning design will be
chosen from the best entries in each
of the four age groups. It will be
featured on the Richmond Borough
in Bloom poster to go on display in
libraries throughout the borough.
All award winning entries will be exhibited
at Richmond Borough in Bloom events
held during 2013.
Each entry will be allocated to its
appropriate age group. The overall winning
design will be chosen from the four entries
at the top of the four age groups.
