GRIFFS RETURN TO AHA PLAY AT AIC
After playing CCHA teams in the last two weekends, the Canisius College
hockey team returns to Atlantic Hockey play with a pair of games at AIC.
The teams meet on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
EARLY RETURNS
4Though just five games into the conference season, the Griffs have
shown to be a contender in Atlantic Hockey play.
4Canisius has taken six points in five league games (2-1-2) despite
having the youngest team in the conference and playing three of the
top four teams in the Atlantic Hockey preseason poll plus a fourth
team that is currently tied for third in the league standings.
4Defense has led the way as Canisius is giving up just 1.60 goals per
game despite playing three of last season’s top four scoring offenses.
GOALTENDING LEADING THE WAY EARLY
4Senior Dan Morrison and sophomore Tony Capobianco have been
the early stars of the 2011-12 campaign for Canisius in net.
4In conference play, the two have backstopped the team to a 1.55
goals against average, tied for second in Atlantic Hockey.
4In AHA games, Morrison leads all goaltenders in the league with a 0.98
goals against average and .969 save percentage, while Capobianco
owns a 1.94 goals against average and .952 save percentage.
SAVING HIS BEST FOR LAST
4Not only is Dan Morrison having his best
season in his last year, but the senior has
been nearly unbeatable late in games.
4Morrison has dominated the final period
during his senior season, posting a 0.51
goals against average and .981 save percentage during the third.
4The senior has not allowed a third-period tally in his last five games
and last 100:35 of game time.
CAPOBIANCO RANKS AMONG NATION’S ELITE
4Sophomore Tony Capobianco is also enjoying a strong season in net
during the 2011-12 campaign.
4Capobianco currently owns a .935 save percentage this season,
which ranks fifth in the country and second in Atlantic Hockey.
4The sophomore is averaging 37.4 saves per game and has recorded
at least 31 saves in all five appearances this season. Capobianco
posted a career-best 45 stops in a 3-3 draw at Air Force on Oct. 29.
GRIFFS FINDS SCORING IN GIBBONS-GRAZEN-LAW LINE
4After losing a high-scoring senior class, the Griffs have found scoring
from its Kyle Gibbons, Taylor Law and Matthew Grazen line.
4The trio has combined to score eight goals this season, 47.1 percent
of the teams total output. They have added seven assists on the year.
4Gibbons leads the Griffs with eight points and five assists, while Law
owns the team lead with four goals.
CANISIUS - AIC SERIES
4In a series that dates back to 1992, the Griffs are 26-13-3 all-time against the Yellow Jackets,
including a 26-12-3 edge in Division I meetings.
4Canisius has defeated AIC more than another other school at the Division I level.
4The Griffs have enjoyed a lot of success versus the Yellow Jackets as of late. Since the start of the
2008-09 season, Canisius is 9-0-1 against AIC – including a two-game sweep last year.
4The 10-game unbeaten streak for the Griffs is the longest versus any single team in the program’s
Division I history.
ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS
4AIC is currently 3-8-2 on the season with a 2-3-2 record in Atlantic Hockey play.
4The Yellow Jackets earned a 3-0 victory at Brown on Tuesday after posting ties in back-to-back
league games.
4Steve Mele and Jon Puskar lead the Yellow Jackets with 10 points this season. Mele has also
scored a team-best six goals, while Puskar is tied for the team lead with seven assists.
4Junior Ben Meisner has started 12-of-13 games in net, posting a 2.72 goals against average and
.927 save percentage.
A SHORT-HANDED THREAT
4Junior Torrey Lindsay has proved he is dangerous on the penalty kill this season.
4The junior has netted a short-handed goal in draws at Air Force and Niagara is one of five players
nationally with two man-down goals this season.
4Lindsay is currently tied for second on the team with three goals this season, matching his
career-high total. He also ranks third on the squad with five points.
POWER OUTAGE
4Unfortunately for the Griffs, Torrey Lindsay’s two short-handed goals this season is just one
fewer than Canisius’ power-play output.
4Canisius has converted just 3-of-39 power-play chances this season. The team’s 7.7 percent
conversion rate ranks 55th nationally (of 58 teams) and 11th in Atlantic Hockey.
4The Griffs did show signs of improvement in Sunday’s contest against Lake Superior State, going
1-for-3 with the extra man against the nation’s seventh-ranked penalty kill unit.
CANISIUS (2-6-3, 2-1-2) AT AIC (3-8-2, 2-3-2)
YOUTH MOVEMENT
4There is a new look to the Griffs this season with the addition of 12 players to the 2011-12 roster.
4The 12 freshmen are tied for the most in the country this season with Mercyhurst and Ohio State.
4Overall, Canisius has only two seniors and six upperclassmen to go along with 20 underclassmen.
THE LOST BOYS
4The need for such a large freshmen class is due to the loss of a successful 2011 senior class.
4Canisius lost 12 letterwinners from the 2010-11 squad who accounted for 53.6 percent of the
team’s goals and 51.7 percent of its points — including the top two scorers in the program’s
history in Cory Conacher (147 career points) and Vincent Scarsella (133 points).
ADDING SIZE
4One noticeable aspect of the incoming freshman class is size.
4The 12 newcomers have an average height of nearly 6-2.
4A small team in the past few seasons, Canisius added two inches in its average size to its roster
this year. The average Griff is now 6-1, compared to 5-11 last season.
4Only eight (of 26) Griffs are shorter than 6 feet in 2011-12, compared to 14-of-26 last season.
TIMELY FIRST GOALS
4Doug Beck, Mitch McCrank and Matthew Grazen are the first three freshman to score goals
this season and they couldn’t have picked a better time to do so.
4Beck netted his first collegiate score – an extra-attacker tally – with 6.0 seconds left in a 3-3
draw at Air Force on Oct. 29. Grazen also scored in a tie, netting his first goal against No. 12 Lake
Superior State on Nov. 19.
4McCrank netted his first career goal – the game-winning third-period score – in a 3-1 win versus
Bentley on Nov. 6.
MORRISON SAVES THE DAY
4One unit where the Griffs return a lot of experience is at
the crucial goaltender position in senior Dan Morrison.
4Morrison has totaled 2,475 saves during his career and is
easily on pace to set the program’s standard.
4The senior is just 296 saves shy of the mark set by Bryan
Worosz from 2001 to 2005.
Career Saves Record
4Last season, Morrison accumulated a school-record 993 saves, 103 more than the previous
record held by Worosz (2002-03).
LOW ON CHANCES
4Canisius has needed their goalies to be strong as the offense has not put up big numbers.
4Canisius currently ranks 56th nationally and last in Atlantic Hockey with 1.55 goals per game.
4One reason for the low scoring output is because of how few shots the Griffs are getting on goal.
4Canisius is averaging 21.5 shots per game, the second-fewest in the country. Alabama-Huntsville
is last with 20.4, while Sacred Heart has the second-lowest total in Atlantic Hockey with 23.2.
4Twice this season, Canisius has been held under 10 shots in a game – a first in school history.
SOPHOMORES BUILDING ON ROOKIE CAMPAIGNS
4With more than half of the team’s offensive production
lost to graduation from last season, the Griffs needed
Scoring By Class
the sophomore class to take the next step and build
on their strong rookie seasons.
4Through 11 games, the class has responded.
4The six Canisius sophomore skaters who have seen
action this season currently account for 48 percent of
the team’s points , 41 percent of its goals and 52 percent of its assists.
Career Saves
Saves
1. Bryan Worosz (2001-05) 2,771
4Sophomore Kyle Gibbons leads the Griffs with eight points and five assists, while classmate
Taylor Law owns the team lead with four goals.
SOPHOMORES ALSO CONTRIBUTING DEFENSIVELY
4The Canisius sophomore class is not only leading the way on the offensive end, but the class also
has contributed defensively.
4Canisius’ eight sophomores own a combined plus/minus rating of +8 this year. The rest of the
Griffs are -39 on the season. No single sophomore currently owns a negative plus/minus rating.
A DEFENSIVE LEADER IN DANFORD
4Sophomore defender Ben Danford is the anchor of the team’s blue line and looks to follow up a
strong rookie season from last year.
4In 38 games as a freshman, Danford set the program’s mark for assists by a blueliner (24) and
points by a rookie defender (26).
4In 11 games this season, Danford has recorded four assists, including a season-best two helpers
in his most recent contest against No. 12 Lake Superior State.
A POWERFUL THREAT
4When looking for a power-play threat for the Griffs, look no further than junior Preston Shupe.
4Shupe, who has scored two of Canisius’ three power-play goals this season, has netted 11 extraman
tallies during his career.
4No other active Griff has more than two career power-play goals. In fact, the remaining 22 skaters
on the team have a combined seven extra-man tallies.
PLAYING TO THE FINAL WHISTLE
4One trait of the Griffs under coach Dave Smith is to play to the final whistle and a full 60 minutes.
4Canisius netted a pair of extra-attacker goals in the 3-3 draw against Air Force on Oct. 29. It
marked the third time since the 2008-09 season that the Griffs sent a game into overtime with
two extra-attacker tallies.
4Overall, Canisius has netted 10 extra-attacker goals in seven games since the start of the 2006-07
season to send a contest into the extra session with a 2-1-4 resulting record.
4The Griffs have not allowed an extra-attacker score since Nov. 19, 2005 against Connecticut.
Canisius, however, won that contest in overtime.
A FIRST FOR THE SENIOR DUO
4The two Canisius seniors – Dan Morrison and Scott Moser – have helped the Griffs accomplish
a lot during their career.
4The two have helped Canisius to their first victories against a nationally-ranked, CCHA and ECAC
schools but the one thing they hadn’t done prior to the season is defeat RIT.
4Morrison and Moser, however, ended that streak by leading Canisius to a 3-1 victory on Oct.
20. Morrison recorded 33 saves and Moser netted the game-winning goal with 5:27 remaining.
4Canisius was 0-8-0 against RIT since the beginning of the 2008-09 campaign prior to the win.
MORRISON NAMED AHA GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
4After anchoring the Canisius defense to a win against RIT, senior Dan Morrison was honored as
Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week.
4Morrison stopped 33-of-34 shots, while holding the Tigers off the scoreboard for the final 55:41
of the contest in the Oct. 20 victory.
4The weekly accolade is the fifth for Morrison during his career.
IRON MAN
4One constant for Canisius is senior Scott Moser.
4Moser has appeared in every game for the Griffs during
the past two-plus seasons and has played in the last 91
games overall.
4The last time a Canisius game did not feature Moser was a
4-3 loss to Connecticut on Feb. 21, 2009.
Consecutive Games Played Streak
Player (Years of Streak) Games
1. Billy Irish-Baker (2004-06) 114
2. Scott Moser (2009- ) 91
3. Spencer Churchill (2007-09) 90
4Moser’s streak of 91-straight games played is the second-longest in Canisius history. He will
surpass the mark of 114 by Billy Irish-Baker if he plays every game this season.
MOSER DOUBLES UP
4Senior Scott Moser will not only be competing for the Canisius hockey team this season, but the
senior is also a member of the golf team while hockey is in the offseason.
4A team captain during the 2011-12 campaign, Moser has recorded three points, two goals and
one assist in 11 contests after setting career highs with 21 points and nine goals last season.
CANISIUS (2-6-3, 2-1-2) AT AIC (3-8-2, 2-3-2)
MOSER AND SHUPE NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS
4Senior Scott Moser and junior Preston Shupe are serving as team captains this season and are
expected to lead a young Golden Griffin team during the 2011-12 campaign.
4It marks the first time since 2003-04 that two players are serving as captains for Canisius.
4Moser has recorded 52 points (18g, 34a) in 109 career games, while Shupe has posted 53 points
(22g, 31a) in 80 career contests.
REACHING INTO A NEW TERRITORY
4With the addition of freshman Carl Larsson this season, Canisius has extended its reach to a new
recruiting ground.
4A native of Anderstorp, Sweden, Larsson is the first player outside of the United States or Canada
to play for the Griffs.
4Larsson has appeared in nine games this season as a rookie, recording one assist.
A NEW POSITION FOR McKELLAR
4With injuries mounting on the blue line for Canisius last season, the Griffs were forced to move
Duncan McKellar from forward to defense. The team liked what it saw and McKellar is now
moving to the position permanently.
4McKellar has appeared in two games this season on the blue line.
GRIFFS PICKED NINTH IN PRESEASON POLL
4Canisius was slated to finish ninth in the annual preseason Atlantic Hockey coaches poll.
4Defending regular season champion RIT was picked to win the league, with postseason
champion Air Force slated for second.
4Last season, the Griffs finished eighth in the regular season standings before advancing to the
Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals by defeating local rival Niagara, 6-3, in the first round.
NEW FORMAT FOR ATLANTIC HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP
4The Atlantic Hockey Tournament will once again feature a new playoff format.
4For the 2012 league tournament, the top four seeds in the regular season standings will earn a
bye in the first round, while 5-8 will host 9-12 in a best-of-three series.
4After reseeding for the quarterfinals, the top four teams will host another best-of-three series.
4The final four teams remaining will meet in Rochester to determine the league’s automatic bid
to the NCAA Tournament.
GRIFFS PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY
4A number of recent graduates are continuing to play hockey at the professional level.
4A total of 12 Griffs who graduated the past two years — the first two recruiting classes for head
coach Dave Smith — are playing at the professional level this year.
CONACHER CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE PLAY IN AHL
4The highlight among Canisius graduates playing in the professional ranks is 2011 graduate and
the program’s all-time leading scorer, Cory Conacher. The 2010 Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year
is playing within the Tampa Bay Lightning organization with the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals.
4In 15 games through Nov. 22, Conacher has recorded 21 points, nine goals and 12 assists. He
currently ranks third in the league in scoring and first among rookies.
4Conacher, who holds Canisius’ scoring records with 147 points and 62 goals, scored a goal in his
first NHL preseason game this season, playing on a line with all-stars Martin St. Louis and Steven
Stamkos.
What is a Griffin?
The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has
the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail
and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly
and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of
a lion.
Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and
vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have
mastery of both the land and sky.
They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws
into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins
would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to
become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away.

Dave Smith
Head Coach • Seventh Season • The Ohio State University ‘92
Dave Smith is in his seventh season as head coach of the
Canisius College hockey program and 14th season as a coach
at the Division I level.
Smith has continued to raise the bar while leading the
Golden Griffin program. Most recently, Smith has mentored
two of the most successful classes in the school’s history in
addition to new found success on the ice. The senior classes
of 2010 and 2011 – Smith’s first two recruiting classes – have rewritten the program’s record book,
while earning a number of historic wins.
During the 2009-10 campaign, Smith led Canisius to one of its most successful seasons with the
team earning its most victories in nine years. The Griffs also progressed to the Atlantic Hockey
Semifinals for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign. In 2010-11, Canisius advanced in the
league’s tournament for the second-straight season – a first for the program – with a convincing
win over rival Niagara, 6-3.
On an individual level, Cory Conacher became the first player in the program’s history to garner
Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year accolades in 2010 after setting a school record with 53 points and
ranking second nationally in points per game. Conacher, who was also named to the Lowe’s Senior
CLASS Award All-America First Team in 2011, graduated from Canisius the following year with 12
school records to his name, including career points and goals.
Following the 2010-11 campaign, Conacher also joined former teammate and 2010 graduate Carl
Hudson as the only two-time all-conference selections in the program’s history. Hudson became
the first Griff to sign with a NHL team after his graduation when the Canisius standout joined
the Florida Panthers, while Conacher signed with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL following the
completion of his collegiate career.
The achievements under Smith are not limited to just the past two years. In his first six seasons
leading the Golden Griffin program, he has guided numerous student-athletes to success both on
and off the ice. The highlights include:
• A total of 19 Griffs have signed professional contracts after playing under Smith at Canisius,
highlighted by 12 members of his first two recruiting classes in 2010 and 2011.
• Smith has mentored three student-athletes who have earned individual postseason awards.
Conacher highlights the honorees with his Player of the Year accolade, while David Kasch
earned the league’s Best Defensive Forward following the 2007-08 season and Dave Kostuch
was named the Rookie of the Year in 2008-09.
• Four Griffs earned all-conference accolades in the past three seasons a total of six times, two
more than Canisius’ first 10 seasons at the Division I level combined.
• The success of the last two seasons comes on the heels of a breakthrough campaign in which
Smith led the Griffs to a number of firsts. During the 2008-09 season, Canisius swept a pair
of games against eventual NCAA quarterfinalist and 15th-ranked Air Force, marking the first
victories for the Griffs against a nationally-ranked opponent. Canisius also earned its first wins
against a CCHA and ECAC school during the season.
• Smith has also excelled on the recruiting front during his tenure at Canisius, with his first two
full recruiting classes graduating in 2010 and 2011 with a combined 44 school records.
• In his six seasons, 87 Griffs have earned Atlantic Hockey All-Academic accolades. In addition,
Max Buetow was named the Atlantic Hockey Top Scholar Athlete in 2005-06 for owning the top
GPA in the league, while Dave Cianfrini picked up the honor in 2009-10.
Smith became the program’s third head coach on April 15, 2005 after serving the previous three
seasons as the associate coach and recruiting coordinator at fellow Atlantic Hockey member
Mercyhurst College. Smith also spent time as an assistant coach with Bowling Green and Miami.
During his tenure as an assistant coach, Smith coached or recruited:
• Two Hobey Baker Award Finalists
• Four Players of the Year
• Two Rookies of the Year
• 22 all-league award winners
• Three Terry Flanagan Award Winners for Perseverance
