Time and Sequence
The series of related events that we expect to find in a story is called the plot.
The events in the plot are usually presented in chronological order, beginning
Event 1 Event 2 Event 3 The End
‣ This type of pacing creates a high level of suspense and drama.
Understanding Cause and Effect
Often the plot of a short story involves a series of causes and effects.
‣ Cause – the reason something happens
‣ Effect – the result of some event or action
Many suspense‐filled stories use edge‐of‐your‐seat causes and effects to keep readers guessing.
In a cause and effect chain, one cause leads to an effect, which causes another effect, and so on.
