THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE looks back at the 2014-15 academic year as one
of the most historical seasons in our league’s history spotlighted by achievements on and off the field.
The Toyota SWAC Football Championship and Basketball Tournament returned to Houston, Texas and
were met with increased attendance at both events. Combined attendance, including events sponsored
by the SWAC during the weeks of both, totaled 102,527. The basketball tournament game attendance
has increased by over 37 percent since moving to Houston, reaching 34,809 in 2015. Total tournament
attendance numbers have also risen in the past two years, seeing a 34 percent increase. Over 57,000
fans attended events during the basketball tournament this year.
The football championship game attendance has increased by over 17 percent since 2012 to 39,583,
ranking fifth amongst all of the Football Bowl Subdivision championship games, behind only the SEC,
ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12. When placed against all of the NCAA Division I conference championship and
bowl games, the 2014 Toyota SWAC Football Championship ranks 24th out of 47, surpassing both the
Mountain West and Conference USA championship games and the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl which
featured a ranked Utah program.
For the ninth straight year, the SWAC has finished first in all of NCAA Division I FCS football in average
game attendance. This includes conference member home games and HBCU Classics featuring league
matchups. After the 2014 season, the SWAC has now held the highest per game average in attendance
for 35 of the last 36 years.
We can also applaud the venues for our other conference championships as they were great hosts in
providing a state-of-the-art and memorable experience for our student-athletes. Bowling was held at the Bowling International Training and Research Center
(Arlington, Texas), which is home of the USBC and the sport’s history. To end the conference championships, the baseball tournament was held inside New Orleans
MLB Urban Youth Academy at Wesley Barrow Stadium. The conference has always been linked in with MLB’s UYA and Urban Invitational. It was great to extend
our relationship with MLB as host to our baseball finale.
This past fall, Howard University completed its first year as an affiliate member for the sport of women’s soccer by winning the regular season and tournament title.
We are pleased to welcome Howard. They are an amazing university with a strong academic and athletic history.
Our league continues to stay competitive as the top three programs in the C.D. Henry Award race were separated by just five points. In cross country, Prairie View
A&M’s men won their first title since 2007 and Alabama State made it four-in-a-row, winning the women’s title again. The Lady Hornets also picked up their second
consecutive women’s volleyball title after battling out of the losers bracket and defeating Southern twice. Alcorn State earned its first football title since 1993 in
storybook fashion over Southern to close out the fall.
Looking at track and field, Alabama State’s women completed the ‘triple crown’ by winning both indoor and outdoor. Texas Southern’s men won indoor, while
Grambling State picked up its sixth straight outdoor championship. The bowling championship was reclaimed by Prairie View A&M, their third title in program
history. And an eventful week of basketball culminated in Alabama State’s women winning their first title in 11 years and Texas Southern repeating as the men’s
champion.
The spring brought three more championships for Alabama State: men’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf. Southern won women’s tennis title, and Texas
Southern took both the softball and baseball championships.
When we speak of the league’s national exposure, we have to credit several television networks, SWAC Digital Network, and swac.org for bringing the competition
to the homes of our loyal fans. For the year, over 40 SWAC contests appeared on television with a majority airing on the ESPN networks in addition to CSS, Comcast
SportsNet, Fox SportsSouth, CSN Houston, and NBC carrying at least one game. ESPN continued to partner with the conference airing the championships for
football, bowling, softball, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball.
The growth of the SWAC Digital Network continues to enhance the brand with more than 64 percent new visitors to SDN this past year. The addition of SDN helped
lift the number of views to our primary resource swac.org. Our home website had more than 3.3 million views with over 50 percent returning.
As the SWAC continues to grow, we have to thank our football championship and basketball tournament title sponsor, Toyota, for its commitment to our studentathletes
and fans. We would also like to salute - Russell, Coca-Cola, and Nike for their support and partnership. Last, we would like to thank our fans, studentathletes,
their parents, and our member institutions for a remarkable 2014-15 season.
Sincerely
Duer Sharp
Howard University
SWAC SOCCER
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Lady Bison of Howard University
captures the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer
Tournament Championship with a 2-1 victory over Prairie
View A&M University at the John Hunt Soccer Complex.
Reina Mata started the match off with the first shot that was
saved by Howard’s Goalkeeper of the Year Kyra Dickinson.
Melissa Kalbfleisch came back at the 6:13 minute mark and
launched the ball straight through Dickinson, putting the
Lady Panthers up by one, recording her second goal of the
year. Nia Walcott received the ball on the opposite end and
attempted to give the Lady Bison their first goal of the match
but was shot too wide.
Carmen Suarez took the first corner kick for Howard in the
16th minute, giving Nikanya Clark the chance to attack the
ball but was unable to capitalize on the play. After taking
the ball back and forth down the field for about 10 minutes,
Howard got a good possession with the ball. Dytria Ruddy
crossed a player, becoming wide open with the ball and
connected with the net at the 24:41 minute mark, scoring
her fourth goal of the season, tying the game 1-1.
Shots were limited until Prairie View’s Deborah Arguelles
blasted a shot during the last nine minutes of the first half
from the left side that was successfully blocked by Dickinson.
Howard led the first half with a total of seven shots, Ruddy
calculated three of those shots. The Lady Panthers tallied
five shots in the first half, with Kalbfleisch with two.
Howard’s Nikanya Clark sparked the second half with an
early goal in the first six minutes, pushing the Lady Bison’s
lead, 2-1. Clark was assisted by Nia Walcott. The Lady
Bison had many attempts afterward, but the Lady Panthers
weren’t allowed another shot until the 68th minute when
#15 Dominique Paige aimed the ball right in the net but was
recovered by Howard’s goalie.
The Lady Bison had three back to back shot attempts in a
two minute span in the last 11 minutes of the match. Prairie
View’s goalie Bianca Garza stepped up and made the saves.
Prairie View A&M was unable to capitalize on any more
shots the remainder of the match. Howard (13-9-1) outshot
the Lady Panthers 17-13. Garza finished the afternoon with
five saves and Dickinson tallied nine for the Lady Bison.
Nikanya Clark finishes as the tournament’s MVP with a total
of three goals. She joins her teammates Sara Vaughan, Nia
Walcott, Dytria Ruddy, Treschelle-Gibson Serrette and Kyra
Dickinson on the all-tournament team.
ALCORN
SWAC FOOTBALL
HOUSTON. TX– The Alcorn State University football team won
its first Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game in
program history Saturday, claiming its first league title since 1993
in storybook fashion at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Braves
quarterback John Gibbs Jr. returned to his hometown of Houston,
completing 20 of 30 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns
to lead Alcorn to a 38-24 victory over defending SWAC Champion
Southern University in front of nearly 39,000 fans in the home of the
NFL’s Houston Texas.
Gibbs, the game’s Offensive Most Valuable Player and a graduate
of the city’s historic Booker T. Washington High School, rushed for
137 yards and caught a pass for five yards. His performance broke
Alcorn legend Steve McNair’s single-season rushing record by a
quarterback and made Gibbs the first quarterback to rush for 1,000
yard season in school history. He distributed the ball effectively,
finding eight different receivers with none of them finishing with
more than 51 yards receiving.
And they sure did. Alcorn senior linebacker William Thomas II
earned Defensive MVP honors after leading the Braves with nine
tackles. The Braves’ defense held Southern to just one offensive
touchdown. The Jaguars’ other 17 points came on a punt return, a
punt block recovery and a field goal.
Alcorn, making its first appearance in the SWAC Championship
Game, found out that nothing comes easy in the postseason. After
routing Southern, 56-16, on Sept. 27 in Lorman, Miss., the Jaguars
(9-4) bounced back to win seven consecutive games.
Next season, Gibbs will have an opportunity to come back to
Houston and defend the conference title in a significant place for
the Braves. It’s the city where the late Steve McNair, the most
prestigious Alcorn football alum, began his NFL career with the
Houston Oilers in 1995. It’s also the city where former Braves wide
receiver and eventual Green Bay Packers All-Pro wide receiver
Donald Driver grew up.
Alcorn’s victory marked the first time since 2007, and second time
ever, that a Mississippi-based school won the SWAC Championship
Game.
The Braves dominated the game statistically, but their special teams
woes allowed the Jaguars to stay in contention as late as the fourth
quarter. They outgained Southern 480 to 268, including 230 to 108
on the ground. Hopson said his team was eager to reach the SWAC
Championship this season after missing it by a single point in 2013.
Both programs have rebuilt within a relatively quick period. Alcorn
was 2-8 three years ago and Hopson arrived in 2012. Southern had
struggled in the seasons prior to Dawson Odums being promoted
to head coach. Southern freshman quarterback Austin Howard
completed 15 of 30 passes for 152 yards.
SWAC VOLLEYBALL
BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama State swept Southern
to earn the 2014 SWAC Championship title Sunday night
at the Cliford Seymour Gymnasium. This marked the
second time in two years the Hornets won. Match scores
include: 25-17, 25-16, 25-18.
Tiara Kelley led the match in kills with 10, while Phalen
Clark set for 23 assists. Jaime Coleman and Ellyn Jones
share the match-high in digs, 10 apiece.
Myla Marshall was named Most Valuable Play, while
Coach Penny Lucas-White was named Coach of the
Year. The All-Tournament Team is as follow: Marshall
(Alabama State), Rachel Smith (Alabama State), Kyanna
Sales (Alabama A&M), Taiji Thomas (Jackson State),
Mikayla Rolle (Jackson State), Phalen Clark (Southern)
and Leilani Lealaimatafao.
Volleys presented themselves as both teams swung
for a tied set. Southern gained a four-point lead, but
miscommunication pushed Alabama State ahead.
Building a seven-point lead, the Hornets caused Southern
to call a timeout. With 19-12 on the score board, ASU
continued making effective plays, leaving the score in the
first set, 25-17. The Hornets kept the Jaguars at a hitting
percentage of .061, while the earned a percentage of
.393. ASU also led in blocking with five to Southern’s one.
Southern earned the first point in the second set. The
Jaguars fostered an impressive lead due to blocks and
kills, but not without a Hornet fight. ASU buzzed its way
back, taking over the set by two.
The set went on with both team scoring and a score of
14-14. Under Jones, the Hornets marched back up with
a two-point gap. Wasting no time, ASU gained complete
control, ending the set, 25-16.
With hopes of finishing the set and winning the match,
the Hornets climbed their way to a one-point lead. A kill
from Shauntia Carr placed Southern back in the lead with
a three-point cushion. Errors from the Jaguars allowed
ASU to tie the set at 11, then 12. After a few volleys,
Alabama State secured a three-point lead. Southern tried
to work its way back into the set, but ASU shut them down
at every turn. Repeating as SWAC champions, Alabama
State ended the set, 25-18, winning the set, 3-0.
SWAC MEN’S BASKETBALL
HOUSTON, TX – Deverell Biggs stepped in after
Malcolm Riley was injured on a flagrant foul and made
two free throws with 27 seconds left, Madarious Gibbs
added another and Texas Southern beat Southern 62-
58 on Saturday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference
championship game.
Riley was unable to shoot about being fouled by Trelun
Banks, who was ejected.
Riley led the Tigers with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Gibbs, the conference player of the year, went 4 for 15
from the field and finished with 12 points in the game.
Freshman forward Jared Sam scored 12 points and 11
rebounds for the Jaguars. Tre Lynch missed a three
pointer with 2.9 seconds to go that would have given
Southern the lead.
The Jaguars hit six of their first 10 shots of the second
half to move into the lead, with Sam scoring six quick
points from both inside and out. The Tigers sputtered
out of the locker, scoring just six points in the first nine
minutes of the second half.
Neither team took more than a five-point lead at any
time during the first 20 minutes as both were nearly
identical down the stat sheet.
TSU won the conference tournament and earned an
NCAA berth last season. This marks the second time in
TSU history the team will go to the tournament in backto-back
years, earning bids in 1994 and 1995.
SWAC BOWLING
ARLINGTON, TX – Prairie View A&M University was
named the 2015 SWAC Bowling Champion Sunday
afternoon at the International Training and Research
Center.
This marks PVAMU’s third time in history winning the
title. With a 2015 regular season record of 18-6, the
Panthers grabbed a second place standing.
Alexis Borman, a sophomore from Allen, Texas,
claimed the SWAC MVB honor as she bowled 14
frames, tossing six strikes and seven spares. Borman
only allowed one open frame.
Prairie View A&M (214, 205, 156, 180, 263, 177, 222)
started the day winning set one with a total pinfall of
214 to 166. The Panthers bowled five strikes, while
Texas Southern ( 166, 174, 165, 188, 154, 221,
193) gathered two. PVAMU continued its drive as it
collected the second victory of the day, 205 to 174.
TSU battled back in the third game, pulling ahead in
the sixth frame with a count difference of 22 – going on
to earn its first win of the day, 165 to 156.
The score remained close in the next set as both
teams bowled four strikes. Texas Southern remained
persistent, using a spare in the last frame to land a
victory. But in the fifth game, the Panthers submitted
strikes in all frames except the eighth, gaining another
win.
Their total pinfall of 263 was the highest out of all
games during the three-day tournament, leaving the
round 3-2. Seven strikes in the sixth from the Tigers
created a tie between the two teams, 3-3, forcing a
seventh game.
In the final frame of the round, Prairie View performed
the best supplying a 222 pinfall count and a 4-3 record.
The championship match will air on ESPNU Tuesday,
SWAC BASEBALL
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Texas Southern University won
its first Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball title
since 2008 with a 10-0 win over Southern University
Sunday afternoon at Wesley Barrow Stadium in New
Orleans, La. The Tigers (31-17) have now won three
titles in the program’s history. Southern concluded its
season at 20-23 overall.
Frank Cruz IV pitched a complete nine inning, fourhit
shutout to help lead the Tigers to victory. He also
struck out a game-high four batters. Leading TSU
offensively was senior Zach Howell. The left fielder
went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Horace
Leblanc was the only other batter to collect multiple
hits. He went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Southern starter Santos Saldivar threw a no-hitter into
the fourth inning. With two on and one out, Javier
Valdez singled through the right side to load the bases.
Howell then took his first pitch to deep left center field
for a standup 3-run double. Leblanc followed with
a double of his own, scoring Howell. Saldivar then
struck out the side to end the ending.
Texas Southern got hot again in the sixth playing small
ball. Howell was hit then advanced on a bunt single
down the left field line from Leblanc.
Blake Hicks laid a bunt down and Howell beat out
the play at third to load the bases. Reliever J’Markus
George then hit Joel Rosario to bring another run
across. Errors in the field allowed three more to score
and TSU took the 9-0 lead.
Cruz and the Tiger defense held Southern to just one
hit for the remaining three innings. Texas Southern
advances to the NCAA Tournament.
SWAC SOFTBALL
DECATUR, Ala. – Thomasina Garza (4-for-4) led
Texas Southern University (14-3, 25-16) to its second
consecutive SWAC Softball Championship as the
Tigers defeated Alabama State University (11-6, 21-
33), 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Wilson Morgan Park.
Garza was named the Most Valuable Player of the
tournament (MVP) for the second time in a row.
In the first inning, Brianna Parker hit a single to bring
home Jessica Miller for the Tigers’ first score. Neither
team would score again until the top of the fourth when
TSU used a double to score Garza, making the score
2-0. The Tiger managed two addition runs before
closing out the inning with a four-score game lead.
A two-run double courtesy of Parker allowed Garza
her second run of the day. The rally grew larger as
TSU finished the fifth frame with a score of 6-0. The
Hornets worked behind the bat at the bottom of the
fifth with Aleesa Yanez slugging a double, but the
runner was not successful in making it home.
To finish the game, Krystalani Yockman slammed a
homerun down center, leaving the score 9-0 at the top
of the seventh, granting Texas Southern championship
victory.
Sammantha Jimenez (7-4) pitched a seven-inning
shutout - her first this season. After facing 29 batters,
she only allowed eight hits, and one walk, while tossing
one strikeout. Garza and Chanler Powell managed a
game-high two runs, while Yockman secured a gamehigh
three RBI.
Texas Southern finished the tournament 4-0.
Four, Tigers were named to the all-tournament team
– Garza, Parker, Brianna Simpson and Chelsea
Guenther.
Alabama State
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic
Conference has recognized Alabama State University
as the winners of the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket
Award and James Frank Commissioner’s Cup for the
2014-15 academic year. ASU brought seven SWAC
championships back to Montgomery this past year to
garner the honors. Texas Southern University won
the C.D. Henry Award.
The announcement was made during the league’s
annual spring meetings. This is the third consecutive
year that ASU has won Magee/Jacket Award, and its
second consecutive Commissioner’s Cup.
Magee/Jacket Award
The Magee/Jacket Award is presented to the top
women’s athletic program in the SWAC. The Lady
Hornets beat their point total from last year, finishing
this year with only five points separating the top three
universities. This is the first time in program history
the Tigers have won the men’s all-sport award. They
finished with 70.5 points after winning three team titles
in basketball, indoor track and field, and baseball, and
finishing second in three others: cross country, golf,
and outdoor track and field. TSU beat out second
place Alabama State by just two points.
The Hornets earned 68.5 points and Prairie View A&M
finished a close third with 65.5 points.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic
Conference released its 2014 all-conference teams Friday
and saw the big winners spread across the league with two
co-players of the year. First year Grambling State University
head coach Broderick Fobbs was named Coach of the Year.
Malcolm Cyrus of Alabama State University and John Gibbs,
Jr. from Alcorn State University shared co-offensive player
of the year honors. Texas Southern’s Darian Claibourne,
and Mississippi Valley State’s Quantavius Peterson shared
newcomer of the year. Prairie View A&M University’s
Jerome Howard earned the defensive player of the year
award, and western division champion Southern University’s
quarterback Austin Howard was named freshman of the
year.
Fobbs brought the Tigers from a last place finish (1-10)
record a year ago to competing for a division title in his first
season at the helm. Grambling State closed out the season
7-5 overall, 7-2 against SWAC opponents. The Tigers went
on a seven game win streak to start conference play after
nearly upsetting a ranked Bethune Cookman program the
third game of the season.
Cyrus led the SWAC and finished third in the nation with
1,662 yards rushing, scoring 12 touchdowns. The senior
also caught 28 passes for another 380 yards and a score.
After clocking an additional 34 yards in kick returns, Cyrus
