USB Flash Drives<br />

Universal serial bus (USB) connec<strong>to</strong>rs allow the user <strong>to</strong> attach many kinds of peripheral<br />

devices <strong>to</strong> the <strong>com</strong>puter. You can use a USB <strong>to</strong> connect a printer, digital camera, mouse, external<br />

hard disk drive, and other devices <strong>to</strong> the <strong>com</strong>puter.<br />

A USB flash drive is a device for s<strong>to</strong>ring and transporting data. A flash drive is small—<br />

about the size of a pack of gum, as shown in Figure 1.5. It acts like a portable hard drive that<br />

can be plugged in<strong>to</strong> your <strong>com</strong>puter’s USB port. USB flash drives are currently available with<br />

up <strong>to</strong> 256 GB s<strong>to</strong>rage capacity.<br />

1.2.5 Input and Output Devices<br />

Input and output devices let the user <strong>com</strong>municate with the <strong>com</strong>puter. The most <strong>com</strong>mon input<br />

devices are keyboards and mice. The most <strong>com</strong>mon output devices are moni<strong>to</strong>rs and printers.<br />

The Keyboard<br />

A keyboard is a device for entering input. Figure 1.6 shows a typical keyboard. Compact keyboards<br />

are available without a numeric keypad.<br />
