SPG off to another successful year!

Back by popular demand, welcome
to the latest addition of Full Circle
News.
How time flies. It is now nearly two
years since SPG Ltd were acquired
by the Eriks Group, with Eriks UK
acquiring the entire share capital of
Seals Packings and Gaskets on 1st
August 2008. Since that time we
have seen a lot of changes in
the World, the Credit Crunch,
Global Recession and a change of
Government. However, one thing
that has not changed in this time
is the management structure and
philosophy of SPG.
Whilst other gasket businesses
struggled, 2009 saw SPG Ltd record
our best year ever, both in terms of
sales turnover and profitability.
Good sales strength in the HVAC (
Boiler ) market, combined with
good growth in our Industrial Sealing
activities, both organically and
through the wider Eriks Distribution
and Integrated Solutions network,
ensured SPG bucked the trend of
UK Industry.
So far, after 6 months trading, 2010
looks like being another good year.
We have continued with our sales
success of the previous year
and combined with prudent
management of costs, we are
on target to meet performance
expectations. We have strengthened
our sales team , with the
appointment of Mark Waddington
as Business Development Manager
and Maurice McKaig as Application
Engineer – Scotland, to add focus
on our desire to grow our Industrial
Sealing activity throughout the UK,
establishing ourselves as a major
gasket force, just as we are in the
HVAC market.
However, growth is dependent
on SPG remaining true to
our philosophy of offering quality
products at competitive prices, all
bundled together with outstanding
customer service. We remain
dedicated to quoting 95% of all
enquiries within 2 hours, with
the average turn around being 38
minutes.
Conversion rates for internal Eriks
enquiries is currently 83%, with on
time deliveries over 99%!
Moving forward, I believe it is now
time for SPG to become more
aligned with the Eriks Group.
Although the SPG brand remains
very strong and will be retained in
the HVAC market, it must be the
intention to adopt the Eriks brand
for our Industrial Sealing activity if
we are truly going to realise the
growth expectations discussed. We
will begin to rollout a re branding of
SPG, reflecting that we are Eriks’
technical centre for gaskets here in
the UK. In addition to utilising
the orange SPG lozenge, we will
also use the term Eriks Gasket
Technology, on all paperwork,
literature and promotion activity in
the coming months.
Finally, and most importantly, thanks
to colleagues at SPG for your hard
work and continued support. People
are SPG’s most important asset,
a factor that must never be
forgotten.

2. Waste fibre
material is now collected and recycled
for use in low grade sealing material.
This is already common practice
with rubber materials. Investigation is
ongoing on how insulation blanket

insulation (£100k) has been re-evaluated
in terms of production methods.

SPG is also an expert at Kanban
solutions. Kanbans are a cardboard
free “JIT” delivery system that uses
reusable bins. The advantage is that
we can reduce our card consumption.
In the long term not only a financial
saving but a significant impact on
the environment. We strive to
maintain our Kanban’s at existing
customers and introduce Kanban
solutions to new customers. This last
spring we introduced a Kanban system
to Advanced Plastics which is running
very well. Going into summer
our new target is Bosch.

ERIKS SALES
SPG are dedicated to exceeding the
expectations of all our customers,
inclusive of all internal Eriks accounts.
Regarding quote turnaround, SPG has
a commitment to quote 95% of all
enquiries within 2 hours. For the first
two quarters, we have met this
commitment. 96% of all enquiries
quoted within 2 hours
Regarding due date performance, SPG
has a commitment to deliver 98% of all
orders on time. For the first two
quarters, we have met this
commitment. 99.7% of all
manufactured goods delivered on
time.
SPG processed 518 internal Eriks
enquiries during the first 6 months of
2010, 497 quoted within 2 hours.
Quote conversion rate stood at a
healthy 67%. Of the many Eriks
locations buying product from SPG.

Alistair’s Sales Patter - Summer 2010
It’s been a while since our last Newsletter and lots has happened. I’m still here for
a start!
Our Industrial Sealing guys externally have been spending a lot of time at key
Eriks Branches and I.S. Sites throughout the U.K. to give them the
assurance that we are there when they need us. We are gradually seeing the benefits
of these visits and they are in turn seeing the benefits also of
having Dan Parkes here at Barnsley dedicated to responding to their
demands.
We have come through this critical financial crisis extremely well
considering that many of our competitors have “bitten the dust”, been bought
out, or have had spells on short time. We didn’t reach the dizzy heights we had
set ourselves and that we have come to expect over recent years but we were still
profitable which is a lot more than some can say !
In spite of what’s been going on around us, we are still looking to the
future positively and investing in people. We have employed Maurice
McKaig as an Application Engineer in Scotland, ( as I have been covering Scotland,
albeit in my part time role in the company, I think Simon is trying to tell me something!)
Maurice has been working with another gasket company in their Scottish base for
several years and we are delighted that he has decided to “improve himself ”
by joining us and bringing his experience with him. He will have a base at the
Broxburn Branch and will spread the gospel according to SPG with vigour and enthusiasm
and we’re confident he will produce the results we are looking for. We
are also training current Eriks personnel in different areas with a view to
promoting our expertise directly from the branches.
Apart from our new objectives, we have Garry Fuller in the South and Gary Brown
in the North consolidating our customer base in their respective areas and
beginning to see light at the end of tunnel as regards long term projects that they
have been involved in and we are confident of further successes. I have kept busy
with current major Contract Accounts such as Sulzer Pumps and British Sugar and
I’m delighted to add another blue chip company in Dresser Consolidated as we
have signed a long term contract with them also. As well as that, we have signed
Frame Agreements with Eon Power and Falcon Foodserve.
All in all, we are satisfied in the direction things are going and, as always, the team
here at SPG are confident of future successes and that we will continue to give
our customers 100% support and service.

Focus on Quality
SPG has recently improved our inspection and test facilities. This includes
a dedicated room refurbished to carry out these important tasks, and the
investment in new equipment.
We have a Baty vision system which incorporates a floating measuring camera
that moves anywhere in the measuring range. The machine uses video
edge detecting (VED), which ensures a repeatable result without relying on
the skill of the operator.
We have also recently purchased a Micro Hardness tester and
Densimeter. The Micro hardness tester is a digital bench mounted
machine that measures in IRHD, the hardness of most rubber
samples, but in particular it has been designed to accurately test
thin sections and small test pieces such as 0-rings. The instrument
functions automatically allowing accurate, repeatable results to be
recorded in much less time than traditional models. The Densimeter
is a very accurate instrument for measuring the density (specific
gravity) of a variety of materials, including rubber, plastics, sintered
metals, ceramics, foods and liquids. The Densimeter computes the
density and volume of a sample by weighing it in air and then in water. It has a scale
capacity of 300g and can handle complete objects, samples or loose materials. This is also
backed up by the excellent testing facilities within the group at the Material Technology
Centre in Warrington. Elastomers can be identified using FTIR and TGA analysis, which
provides the finger print of the compound. Tests can also be carried out to determine the
Compression set, Tensile Strength, Elongation, heat and air ageing.
We are now 6 months into our current financial year and things are looking good on the
quality front. 98% of all orders were supplied on time and our PPM is currently at 473.
This is an improvement on the same period last year, when we had recorded a PPM of
623. We are moving in the right direction and will aim to reduce this figure even further
in the second half of the year.

Charity Walk
On 12th June at the stroke of midnight a group of us
representing SPG set off with 1,300 other ladies dressed
as angels and devils on an 11 mile walk around Barnsley
to raise funds for Barnsley Hospice. It was a fantastic
atmosphere and more importantly we all finished. But
judging by the photo some more fresh than others! well
done to everyone who took part and a big pat on the back
for raising around £300.
