7Appendix B: <strong>Heritage</strong> <strong>Assets</strong> Repairs This appendix is not intended to be comprehensive or give detailed advice on the repair of historic assets in Poole. It is just intended to give an outline of how historic assets in Poole should be treated. Many of the historic assets in Poole are historic buildings dating from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Traditional roof materials are predominately slate and tile and walls are usually constructed of red orange and sometimes yellow brick. Decorative terracotta tile or plaques are also very characteristic of Poole, and maintaining them can also be important to retaining the character of these assets. Original roof coverings should be retained Roof Structure should be checked regulary Leaky gutters can cause extensive problems Repointing should be minimised Rainwater goods need cleaning out regularly Flashings to porches should be inspected regulary Traditional windows should be repaired not replaced Gulleys need regular cleaning Brick arches should be repaired to match Glazing bars & early glass should be retained The best method of conserving heritage assets is to carry out regular maintenance. This prevents assets decaying to such an extent that the must be restored or in the worst instance demolished. Restoration to replace lost original features is often inappropriate. Frequent minor repairs to conserve the original fabric are the most economic option in maintaining heritage assets. It is best practice to retain as many historic features as possible. Where repair works are unavoidable, traditional materials and methods should always be used to maintain the integrity of the asset. 75
