This year, Annecy Animation Festival and MIFA are setting their Territory Focus on Spain as
a part of the Country of Honor program. This is a very exciting challenge for all of us and the
best opportunity to demonstrate once again that Spain’s offer of animation contents is playing
in the league of the finest global productions.
Animation from Spain is the umbrella brand created and supported by Icex, Spain Trade
and Investment, to promote the Spanish Animation Industry in all international shows around
and across the globe.
The Animation from Spain guide we are presenting today provides a complete program and description
of activities the event brings together concerning our country. In further detail, we would
like to focus on the profile of Spanish producers, talented new young professionals as well as
tech companies. With 46 companies in total Spanish participation this year at MIFA is at its
highest level ever.
You are cordially invited to our very special conference session - Territory Focus Spain-. This
interactive and entertaining session aims to present what Spain has to offer to the international
animation industry in terms of talent, expertise and investment. The innovative session will feature
14 pre-selected Spanish projects and will be followed by a panel of experts who will provide
the best overview of the studios, producers, sources of finance and high quality technologies used
and appreciated throughout the world. The session is open to any question you ever wished to
ask about our industry.

Dear animation lover,
This year seems extremely special for all the animation companies from our country attending
this beautiful setting of MIFA in Annecy.
As producers and artists we are very happy and proud to be part of this special “Focus over
Spain” in order to show the latest over trends, techniques, new awarded artists, schools or
works in production from our (-really cool! and HOT spot!) country.
Aside as a complement to the international treaties signed for coproductions with Asian and
Spanish speaking countries, we will also be able to show the NEW incentives for working
with Spanish companies in animation, visual effects or videogames, by the incorporation of
tax rebates for foreign (15%) and private investment (18-20%) and research and development
(12%).
We are all sure that all these measures could make any venture worth to look at by working
with animators that really love what they do!

IN SPAIN

TAX INCENTIVES ON THE PRODUCTION OF FILMS AND AUDIOVISUAL IN SPAIN
SPANISH PRODUCTIONS
Investments in Spanish film and audio-visual productions entitle the producer to a tax relief of 20%
from the first million euros of the base deduction, and 18% on the excess of this amount, with a
maximum of €3 million per production.
The base deduction equals the total cost of production plus the cost of copies, advertising and
promotion by the producer (with a limit of 40% of the production costs).
The law establishes a territorial requirement and 50% of the base deduction must correspond to
costs incurred in Spanish territory.
Also it expressly provides that the amount of all tax incentives received may not exceed 50% of
the production cost.
The aid is granted if the objectives requirements are fulfilled.
The requirements include, inter alia:
a) That the production obtains a certificate of Spanish nationality and a cultural certificate.
b) That a new copy of the work is deposited in the Spanish Film Library or equivalent body
of an Autonomous Community.
FILMING FOREIGN PRODUCTIONS IN SPAIN
The executive producer (registed in the ICAA’s Film and Audiovisual companies Register) of a
foreign film or audiovisual is entitled to a tax relief of 15% of the costs incurred in Spanish territory
in this production provided said costs equal at least 1 million euros.
The expenses that qualify for this tax relief must be creative personnel costs and expenses arising
from the use of technical industries and other suppliers.
The amount of this tax relief may not exceed 2.5 million per production and the total amount of any
incentives may not exceed 50% of the production cost.

The animation is a R D & I intensive sector. The animation corporations are based on a creative and
technological high-powered basis, notwithstanding that this companies are SMEs. So much so
that, the 67% of the companies from such industry develop innovation activities which improve the
production & distribution of their contents. Concerning human resources, they allocate between
12% - 30% of their workforce in order to develop such tasks, being in absolute value basis between
620 and 1500 workers in 2011. From a business perspective, and due to the high expertise of
such industry, the companies plough back an average of 11% of their turnover in order to extend
the developing in R, D & I.

the Bored Witch whose only fun in life consists
of the tricks she plays on the three girls. In each
episode, the Triplets play some mischievous
prank on the witch who “punishes” them by
transporting them into a fairy tale. A simple but
explicit pact exists between all these characters:
if the Triplets can make the fairy tale come out
the way it’s supposed to, then the witch will
send them home again. On the other hand, if
they don’t end the story correctly, they must
remain stuck inside of it forever. Obviously, the

He is the co-funder of SUNSHINE ANIMATION STUDIO along with María Buitrago. There he works

Fernando is working as a director, professor and copywriter. His first feature film La Muerte en La
Alcarria was selected in Visions du Réel this past April. He is currently working on the development of
Cheeky Anna, an animation series with french animation studios Les Armateurs and Folimage.

I’m an animation director, and art director. I started my career in 2009 as art co-director in the oppening
of the TVE (Spanish public TV) show La Hora de Jose Mota (seasons one and two). I founded Trimono
with my partner Abel Sánchez in 2010, and we produced animation pieces for VH1, Paramount
Comedy Channel, and El Corte Inglés. I started to work as a teacher in the UTAD (Art Digital and
Technological University) in 2012 and in IED (European Institute of Design) in 2014. I was member of
the jury in the 44th edition of the LAUS awards in 2014.

FROM DOODLES TO PIXELS (DEL TRAZO AL
PÍXEL). OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF SPANISH
ANIMATION.
“FROM DOODLES TO PIXELS” is a compilation project curated by Carolina López Caballero and
developed by Spain’s Public Agency for Cultural Action (AC/E) and the Centre of Contemporary
Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) with the collaboration of Catalonian and Spanish Cinemathèques,
Cameo and other entities and companies.
This program shows the little known history of Spanish animation that this year celebrates its 100 years.
Some productions of the last decade have placed Spanish animation on the international map, but
they’re just the tip of the iceberg of years of talent and determination to create an art and an industry.
What we première in Annecy is the result of a research, review and recuperation of historical materials in
a dialogue with contemporary authors’ works. What you’ll see is the least known part of our production
and traces a political, industrial, cultural and social history from the perspective of animation.
Many of these works have been transferred to digital from the original film materials and others
have been remasterized for the event. For the first time, it will be possible to see in a single
programme various decades of creativity and many different styles in a thematic journey containing
the following screenings:
DOODLES
Our pioneers and the first “golden age” of
Spanish animation (the 1940’s) with the best
cartoonists of that time. From Segundo de
Chomón and K-Hito to Josep Escobar and
Joaquín Muntañola. Two contemporary artists
are also included; Mariscal and Calpurnio Pisón
with their stick-figures characters in a dialogue
with the early works.

UNDER THE YOKE
Between the Franco’s moral pamphlet and the
technological innovation, the film Garbancito de
la Mancha (Arturo Moreno, 1945), produced
in Spanish post civil war, was the first colour
animated feature in Europe and enjoyed a great
success in Spain.

MODERN TIMES
The Estudios Moro produced with beautiful
designs hundreds of commercials that reflect
the economical recovery of the 1950’s and
1960’s, as well as the modern aesthetics of
that time. Other contemporary works of a jazzy,
stylised and colourist look from Miguel Gallardo,
Isabel Herguera, Carles Porta and Adriana
Navarro, among others, are included here.

MACIÁN, THE MASTER
With just one finished feature, El Mago de los
sueños (The Dream Wizard Francisco Macián,
1966), Macián showed his amazing talent.
The film is based on Andersen’s universe and
is leaded by a wizard and 6 small children (3
sisters and 3 brothers) known as the Telerin
Family (originally created by José Luis Moro).

Internationally renowned creator and director of the awardwinning
hit series Pocoyo, Guillermo García Carsí’s work
has earned him many awards including a Cristal for Best TV
Production at Annecy 2006 and the Bafta for the Best Pre-
School Animation. In 2009, he founded El Señor Studio and he
is currently developing projects for Disney EMEA. His singular
style is particularly recognisable in the character design of
Pocoyo and Doomed.

Mike Goldwing, a 10 year-old kid, son and grandson in a family
