From Our Chair
It is with gratitude and hope that I write my final letter as Board Chair. I am truly humbled by the amazing
work that I have seen here at The Children’s Center. I am grateful for the support of volunteers (without
whom we could not function) and for the generous donations that help us provide services to everyone
who comes through our doors. Thank you to all of you who have found a way to support The Children’s
Center. Your support is truly making a difference in these young children’s lives. I am hopeful that you will
continue to offer your support. In these tough economic times, we need your support more than ever.
Although I am passing the gavel, I remain committed to advocating for this remarkable organization and
all the families who seek services. The Children’s Center served over 1,800 families this past year. Had it not
been for your support, many of these families would not have had access to care.
Each year, hundreds of volunteers give their time and talents to ensure that The Children’s Center will help
all the children entrusted to their care. These numerous volunteers work in the Therapeutic Preschool,
wash toys, raise hundreds of thousands of charitable dollars, and serve on the Board of Trustees. Our
volunteers provide 20,000 hours of service which is a cost savings of $400,000 a year. We couldn’t do it
without your support!
A special thanks to those who led committees and served on our board. Amy and Dru Damico, through
their charge as chairs of the annual benefit fundraiser, helped to raise over $400,000! It was a significant
commitment on their part to bring a successful fundraiser to downtown Salt Lake City and they did
a fabulous job. The entire committee put in endless hours to create an amazing event that ensures
treatment for hundreds of children at The Children’s Center.
I would also like to express my gratitude to those who have signed off from the board this year. Thank you
to our outgoing board members Sheila Deputy, Dru Didier, Alzie Green, Kim McFarland, Paul Tew and Mike
Zuhl. These amazing people together contributed 45 years of service on the Board. Finally, I would like to
warmly welcome our new board members Paul Thompson, Brent Moore, and Davis Mullholand.
I only wish I could thank each and everyone of you personally. Please know that your support is truly
appreciated and is making a difference in the lives of our children and their families. You are giving them
hope and a renewed chance at life.
With sincere gratitude,
Helen Cardon
easons to smile
From the Executive Director
Douglas Goldsmith, Ph.D. - Executive Director
The annual report provides us with an opportunity to share with you, our donors and friends, a snapshot of
the agency over the past year. One particular statistic really stands out for us this year. Our referrals are
up 20 percent over last year. That figure translates to more than 40 new families calling us each week for
help for their child. I am often asked if the children’s problems have changed over the years and the truth
is that they have.
In any given week we now hear from at least half a dozen families who are seeking a psychological
evaluation for their child because they have been told that their child might have autism. Because of
governmental cutbacks their families are finding it more difficult to find expertise in the field of autism.
The Children’s Center is now able to provide help for families by offering comprehensive psychological
evaluations, family therapy, and our unique social skills groups that help children learn to talk about
feelings and make friends. As well, many of the higher functioning children are receiving help in our
therapeutic preschool program. Families are also able to take advantage of our P.L.A.Y. Project, an in-home
service that teaches parents to engage effectively with their child.
Sadly, it is getting progressively more difficult for families to access insurance benefits that will cover a
comprehensive evaluation. And once a child is diagnosed, parents are confronted with the need for an
array of services that includes mental health, speech, occupational therapy, and others in order to meet the
many emotional, cognitive, and developmental needs of a child diagnosed with autism. So we turn to the
community to help us help them. . .
A growing number of the weekly calls are from people seeking
help for their child who has experienced a serious trauma. An
overwhelming number of children struggle to sleep at night,
can no longer get themselves to sit down for a meal, and throw
horrific temper outbursts because they have been exposed to
domestic violence in their homes. Some have sought help at
the YWCA shelter and enter our building through the safety of
the mental health pathway between our two campuses. Others
are at home but fear that the offending parent could show up
again at any time and hurt them again. Some of the children are
struggling with traumatic grief because the violence resulted in
the loss of a loved one. The families are trying to get back on
their feet. The mothers are doing all they can to provide care
and have no money to cover the cost of mental health care. So
again, we turn to the community for help. . .
Children are referred each week who have suffered from sexual
or physical abuse. They try to cope with their feelings by
striking out at peers at their daycare. Some act out sexually.
Others strike out in anger whenever another child approaches;
believing that they must annihilate the other child before the
child strikes first. They’re frightened and hurting. Unfortunately,
the daycare teacher
simply sees an
angry, out of
control child and
can no longer keep
making excuses
to keep the other
children’s parents
at bay. So the
child’s mother, who
has finally landed a part time job, is faced with
having to quit her job to take care of her child who
just got expelled from daycare. She can barely
make ends meet and knows that her child needs
therapy. Given her limited resources we turn to the
community for help. . .
The weekly phone calls illustrate the tapestry of
life in our growing community. We see refugee
families from war torn nations around the world,
families struggling with grief because the father
was deported back to Mexico, families who are
divorcing and want to minimize the impact on their
young children. We see intact families who can barely manage their increasing anger because they simply
cannot stop their child’s unruly behavior in the home. And we see more and more grandparents who
are caring for their grandchildren. Nearly all of the families need charitable support in order to get their
children the help they so badly need. So for all of these families we turn to the community for help. . .
The stories are heart wrenching. None of us can stand to see young children suffer. But once they walk
through our doors and meet with our talented, compassionate clinical team the families begin to heal. The
children begin to smile again. They learn to make friends. And the relief on the faces of their parents is
palpable. On any given day our waiting rooms are home to families coming in for the first time who get to
witness the squeal of delight when a child runs into the welcoming arms of his therapist. And they see the
mother and child calmly walk out the door, hand in hand, their faces reflecting hope.
The families know that we do not do this alone. They know that a multitude of donors makes all of this
possible. And as a staff we are forever mindful that it is your generosity and trust in us that allows us to
give the children the promise of a better life. Our successes are yours because you play an integral part in
ensuring our success.
On behalf of all of the families, and our staff, I extend to you our heartfelt appreciation.
Trauma
Sadly, bad things happen to young children. Fortunately, as a nationally recognized child traumatic stress
treatment facility our highly trained team of clinicians is able to provide effective therapy for traumatized
children. The list of traumas range from severe dog bites, severe burns, witnessing domestic violence,
or being subjected to sexual abuse, to physical abuse, or neglect. Utilizing evidence-based trauma
treatments, we are able to help children recover from their trauma symptoms and learn new coping
strategies that enable them to move forward and enjoy a brighter future.
Our specialized training in evidence-based trauma treatments equips our clinicians with the skills needed
to help children who have experienced trauma. We are especially pleased to report that our outcome
data demonstrates that our treatments effectively reduced aggression, anxiety and post traumatic stress
symptoms in 100% of the children who received therapy. Additionally, parents report that their children
are succeeding in social settings, at school and sleeping better following trauma treatment.
The generosity of our donors guarantees that all families who need our help will receive treatment with
fees based upon their ability to afford our services. We firmly believe that no child should ever be turned
away because of the lack of financial coverage for treatment.
Therapeutic Preschool
Program
The Children’s Center Therapeutic Preschool
Program is our longest-standing service to
the community. This program helps children
develop group skills that enable them to succeed
in regular preschool and daycare programs.
Children learn to trust adults, comply with
adult requests, share toys and make friends. By
teaching them how to identify and talk about
their feelings, we help the children learn to
regulate their emotions more effectively. As
a result, temper outbursts decrease and the
children use words instead of fists to express
their anger.
Last year 320 children received treatment in
the Therapeutic Preschool. Over 80 % of the
children were able to successfully enroll in
regular school programs at the conclusion of
treatment. Their parents, who were engaged in
family therapy services at The Children’s Center,
learned valuable parenting skills to help their
child live a happier, healthier life. Working closely
with the child’s local school district, we help
children who need continued support receive
carefully tailored special education services and
continued therapy at The Children’s Center.
Access to this valuable program is made possible
by the generosity of individuals, businesses
and foundations in the community. Without
charitable donations, families would spend
$1,000 a month for an average of nine months
for this intensive therapy. Over 98% of the
families are able to qualify for charitable support
enabling their child to receive the critical care
needed to enjoy a successful childhood.
Early Childhood Consultation and Training Program
Prevention plays a critical role in our spectrum of treatment services. The Early Childhood Consultation
and Training Program significantly impacts preschoolers throughout the Wasatch front annually. This statefunded
program provides hundreds of hours of professional training to child care providers which enable
them to work with the children who are entrusted to their care, yet who need additional help in order to be
successful in their program. This unique training program helps prevent behavior problems by equipping
daycare and preschool teachers throughout Salt Lake County with outstanding skills that help children
develop their full potential.
Autism
The Children’s Center has always developed
programs in order to keep pace with the changing
needs of our community. Over the past decade
the incidence of autism has increased to current
estimates of 1 in 85 births. As a result families are
seeking our support to provide accurate assessment
and effective treatment for children with Autism
Spectrum Disorders.
This past year 10% of the families seeking our help
indicated concerns about autism. We now provide
psychological and psychiatric evaluations, Social
Skills Group Intervention for Children with Autism
Spectrum Disorder, P.L.A.Y. Project, and “Floortime”/
DIR® for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder,
Speech and Language Therapy, and Individual Child
and Family Therapy. A growing number of children
are learning to develop group skills and build
friendships in the Therapeutic Preschool program as
well. The Children’s Center has also partnered with
Easter Seals Goodwill Northern Rocky Mountain to
provide occupational therapy. It is a remarkable accomplishment to offer so many services in one location.
Among the all-encompassing services The Children’s Center offers to families who have a child with
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the one that stands out the most in our community is our Social Skills
Group Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Last year nearly 100 children participated
in this unique program, with remarkable outcomes for the entire family. The vast majority of the parents
feel that since the beginning of therapy they are better able to understand their child’s needs and as a
result of this therapy their parenting skills have significantly improved.
Families who have one child with ASD spend on average $67,000* annually for services for their child. In
comparison, the annual average cost of raising a child without ASD is $13,530**. Cost is often prohibitive
for families to provide the care their child needs; but because of charitable support at The Children’s
Center, families may access services at a lower rate. By utilizing trained paraprofessionals and graduate
students, we are able to control the costs of this valuable program making it available to all who need this
unique service.
Family Therapy
This past year 1,732 families received care through our outpatient services. Referral concerns range from
toilet training and sleep issues to painful family losses including divorce or the traumatic loss of a caregiver.
Families come to The Center filled with trepidation and apprehension. Their relief upon discovering a
staff that treats them with compassion and understanding is the reward we receive for our work. As one
caregivers stated:
“I want to thank you for never judging me with the struggles I’ve had and always making me feel welcome.
You have shown me what being a real mom takes in life and that it’s okay to not be perfect.”
“We feel hopeful that we can help relationships heal. The Children’s Center has the “therapeutic tools” we
need, and we are committed to continuing our work.”
Training
In addition to providing comprehensive,
professional mental health care to families,
The Children’s Center is committed to being
an integral part of training mental health
professionals and students in Utah. Throughout
our 49 year history, The Children’s Center
has provided comprehensive educational
experiences for future psychologists, social
workers, counselors, speech and language
pathologists, psychiatrists, family practitioners,
pediatricians and nurses. This commitment is
also reflected by our annual Bridging the Gap
Conference, and statewide training contracts.
Our clinical team was selected to present at the
National Child Traumatic Stress Network’s All
Network Conference this past year. In addition,
The Children’s Center has been recognized
as a leader in the field for our adaptations of
evidence-based practices in the field of trauma
treatment for preschool aged children.
Volunteerism and Outreach
In addition to recruiting over 600 volunteers annually, 500 of whom perform over 14,000 hours in
the Therapeutic Preschool, The Children’s Center reaches out to share our story with members of
the community. Our message is shared with a multiplicity of interested groups, such as the Granite
Schools Retired Teachers’ Association or new case workers at the Division of Child and Family
Services or by attending volunteer fairs at colleges, universities and high schools in the valley and
beyond.
“Spread the Word” about
The Children’s Center
We are delighted to be invited to talk to students in courses at the University of Utah that have a
service learning component and we cultivate collaborations with professors through our association
with The Bennion Center on campus. We also enjoy providing talks and tours to groups interested
our mission and we are able to provide a great team-building activity for business and professional
groups in the form of mass toy-washings. We have had groups from large businesses like Workers’
Compensation Fund, Shopko and UPS as well as from church groups, boy scouts and Key Clubs who
find it is a lot of fun to get together for a few hours and wash a roomful of toys.
Our 30 years of partnership with the National Charity League continues as the girls mature into
young leaders and their mothers mentor them to be civic minded via service to The Children’s
Center. People are invariably impressed by our programs and moved by our mission and do a great
deal to “spread the word” about The Children’s Center and ways to get involved!
